VOLUME 7, ISSUE 3 APRIL 2015 Hobbs Highlights Home of the Jaguars LEADERSHIP AND LEGACY IN HISTORY BY LAURA FARNELL AND SARAH GOLDBERG Floyd Smith—Principal Amanda Makar—Asst. Principal Arthur McMillion—Dean Jennifer Hobbs—Editor This newsletter is written and produced by HMS 8th-grade Advanced Language Arts Students For newsletter story ideas or submissions, please contact: Jennifer Hobbs hobbsj@santarosa.k12.fl.us Several HMS students excelled at the HMS school and county History Fair this year! Based on the theme “Leadership and Legacy in History,” students in grades 6 to 12 used primary and secondary sources to research a topic relating to local, national, or world history. After analyzing and interpreting the information they gathered, students expressed their findings in a paper, exhibit, performance, documentary, or website. They could work individually or in groups of up to five members except in the historical paper category, which is open only to individuals. National finalists will win prizes ranging from medals to cash! The County History Fair was held at the Gulf Breeze Middle School library on February 6th. Here, in 8th grade, Sarah Gold- berg & Laura Farnell won first place, and second place went to 7th graders, Annalise Eberhard and Haley Brown for the category, Group Exhibit. Adeline Belova, 7th grader, was given first place, in her category, Individual Documentary. The 7th graders were part of “History Fair has been an overwhelming the first advanced 7th grade experience,” says first-place school and group to participate here at county history fair winner, Laura Farnell Hobbs (and the first qualifiers (left—shown with Sarah Goldberg, right). from that group). All of these Their winning exhibit on Harriet Tubman students are moving on to the is shown below. state history fair, located in Tallahassee on May 3–5. Here, they will compete against students from around Florida who have also won on the county level. From there, winners will go on to the national competition, located in Maryland. The reason for all of this hard work, commitment, and determination put into one project is because of the rewarding prize at the end: a fullride scholarship!
