Teen uses baseball bat to
send naked intruder running

Eighty-two-year-old
Mildred Ogg has taken
American flags to the
grave of her late husband
at Summerfield Township
Cemetery for a decade.
“He loved flags so I
always try to keep them
there,” she said.
A few weeks before Memorial Day she purchased
a flag chime for $10 that
she placed on a Shepherd’s Hook at the grave
and bought another chime
decorated with a cow to
place at the gravesite of her
friend who had a soft spot
for bovines.
Ogg and presumably
dozens of others learned
their mementoes placed in
memory of their loved ones
at the Haskell Lake Road
cemetery had been trashed
or deposited in a storage
building to be retrieved.
Township supervisor
Brice H. Bond ordered the
removal.
“Everybody in the
neighborhood is upset,”
Ogg explained. “It is just
a neighborhood cemetery
and he ruined it.”
Ogg doesn’t mince
words. She called Brice a
“joker” because he doesn’t
bother to have people
clean away junk overflow
in yards yet he “takes everything off dead people’s
graves.”
Ogg and others interviewed for this story said
they were not prepared of
the new restrictions at the
cemetery.
“I’m going to get the
Shepherd Hook back and
get another flag chime and
put it up. He better not
touch it again.”
A petition calling for
an election to recall Bond
could not be substantiated
in time for this story. But if
there is one, Ogg said she
will be the first to sign it.
And if he runs for office
again, she wants to run
his campaign so he isn’t
reelected. “He had no damn
business to do what he
did,” she declared.
Reached by phone at
the Township Hall, Bond
declined to comment on
recent events except to say
“It’s a township situation
that is being rectified.”
Asked how, he replied
“I’m not going to talk to
you about that.”
Asked if he had ordered
the removal of flowers and other items from
gravesites, he replied “No
comment.”

a naked couple were both
arrested after the woman
left her naked husband
and a (clothed) child at
the Clare Welcome Center

County honorees turned
back the clock six decades
journeyed together reliving their military service
visiting war memorials in
Washington D.C., compliments of the nonprofit
Honor Flight Network.
Among the 60 military

Shirley Abbot was 20
when a recruiter offered
her two choices. She could
be a medic or a cook. Her
choice was the latter. She
trained in Alabama and
worked at military hospitals. She closed her post
after three years in Japan.
The introduction to nursing influenced her choice
of becoming a practical
nurse. “I used my G.I. Bill
and studied nursing at Mid
Michigan Community College in Harrison. Graduated
in 1974,” she said.
She stayed in nursing 24
years.
Her husband Daniel
Abbott, a veteran of WWII,
was selected for an Honor
Flight last year.”He talked
about it for weeks,” she
recalled.

Hibl said the City hosted
a meeting May 27 on future

anticipated development in
the City’s north district. He
said engineers have estimated 10,000 new vehicles
per day and the need for a
round-about on the north
intersection of Colonville
and McEwan (Old US-27).

BPA Advisor Deb Loesel,
named “Best Advisor in the
State” by the Business and
Professional Association.
She was awarded with the
2015 Barbara Chambers
Award as the most outstanding advisor for BPA
in Michigan. At the City
meeting, she was presented
with the Key of Excellence by the City. Mayor
Humphrey said, “Deb has
shown brilliant leadership,
talent and genius in teaching.” The City has had a
great relationship with her,
Humphrey said.

Day weekend with a visit
to the Middle of the Mitten for the second annual
“Middle-O-Mit” Triathlon.
The Middle O’ Mit Triathlon, sanctioned by USA
Triathlon, is for youngsters
and adults alike. It is just
two weeks away on June
20th beginning at 8 a.m. at
Wilson State Park in Harrison.
The event, which drew
137 participants last year
and raised about $2,000 after expenses, is one of the
fundraisers for the Friends
of Clare County Parks and
Recreation, the event sponsor. All of the Triathlon
funds raised go to support
Parks and Recreation in the
area.
The Parks and Recreation committee also
sponsors bike rides, the
Gateway Affair in the fall
and several other fundraisers, all to help the
organization support area
activities.
Dave Coker, who had
the idea for the Triathlon,
said “We wanted more
people to know about the
Friends of Parks and Recreation and what we do.
We sponsor many events
throughout the year and
donate to the Backpack
Program for area kids,
provided the new park
bench at the Farwell Village Park, handle RailTrail maintenance and
provided the little league
fencing among many
other projects.”
He continued, “Many
people don’t realize
where it comes from. We
wanted to get the word
out to people about our
organization, but the big-
gest reason we sponsor
the Triathlon is for kids. It
gives them a summer activity to get them outside
and ‘off the couch’.”
He said the event is
geared for everybody.
“We have serious competitive athletes that come
from all over to do this,
but it is for others too.
Anybody can do this
(within reason). It doesn’t
matter what physical
condition they are in.” He
said the event also brings
a variety of spectators:
friends, supporters and
family all come to watch.
There is a charge to
participate in the competitive events, but kids
up to age 15 participate
free, even in the competitive events. “The biggest
thing we are trying to do
is to get more kids from
our area involved in this
event,” Coker said.
He said “Team Maddy,” consisting of Rick
Vanbeek and his disabled
daughter Maddy from
Grand Rapids, are participants. “He competes with
her in all events,” Coker
said. “They are truly
inspirational and bring
many to the event,” he

of three events in many

A 77 year-old Harrison
man was hospitalized after
he lost control of his vehicle on Old County Farm
road last Sunday afternoon.
According to a release
from the Clare County
Sheriff’s Department, the
man, who was northbound
on County Farm, ran
through a yard on the corner of Bond Street, crossed
Bond, traveled through a
field, re-crossed Bond and
drove into a south-side
yard, where he hit a parked
vehicle then drove into the
back yard and collided with
a tree there.
Emergency personnel
performed CPR on the
man at the scene and he
was taken to MidMichigan
Medical Center Emergency
Room in Clare for further
medical treatment.
Officers said they believe the accident resulted
from a medical condition.
Alcohol is not believed to
have been a factor in the
incident.
Clare County deputies were assisted at the
scene by Mobile Medical Response Ambulance
Services and the Clare
County Sheriff Department
Reserves.

Bruce Jenner betrayed us
Okay, now I feel
betrayed. After watching
Diane Sawyer’s celebrated
interview with Bruce Jenner, I came out in support
of the one-time sports icon,
now transgender.
My opinion piece got a
lot of response, and believe
it or not, in conservative,
rural Mid-Michigan, most
who commented were
favorable towards Bruce
Jenner’s transformation.
These were readers, like
me, who really didn’t know
anyone who is transgender,
but believe people have a
right to be who they want
to be.
For me it was somewhat
of an awakening. I never
bothered to delve in to
transgenderism and the issues that surrounded those
that chose to live a life that
many scorned. One lady
came up to my office to explain some of those issues.
Her son had just become a
daughter, and boy did that
cause waves with family
and friends. Although the
family eventually accepted
their new daughter, it
wasn’t the case with many
friends and acquaintances.
The problems she and her
family faced were heartbreaking.
I believed Bruce Jenner
was sincere, and the perfect
advocate for the transgender community. Before the
interview aired, I thought
Jenner was simply seeking
publicity and prepping for
another reality show. Once
I began watching, however, my opinion changed.
I now saw a man who truly
believed he was a woman,
and wasn’t looking to
exploit his celebrity status
one iota.
I was wrong. Here
comes Vanity Fair, and
there is Caitlyn Jenner
(once my hero, Bruce Jenner) adorning the cover,
wearing a Versace (or
something similar) white
gown, with large breasts
spilling out of the top. He,
oops she, looked like a pinup queen or a glamorous
cover-girl.
I couldn’t help but think
the cover picture was some
kind of spoof. But then I
realized it was Mad Magazine, it was the respected
Vanity Fair. Jenner, who
had told Sawyer that he
had no interest being at the
forefront of the transgender
cause, was now doing what
he said he wouldn’t.
I now realize this was
all a set-up. The Vanity
Fair cover was probably
shot before the interview.
These covers do take time,
you know. The interview,
and now the cover were
carefully timed to make
Jenner a household word,
much like it was back in
Letters
The start of summer
the days of his Olympic
triumphs.
I hope I am wrong. The
transgender community
needs to be heard. We need
to accept them as normal
human beings tackling
life’s challenges just like
you and I. I don’t think
they want to be singled
out. I don’t think they
want special treatment.
They simply want to be
accepted.
I’m not sure Bruce, or
now Caitlyn, Jenner is
helping their cause. I think
the Vanity Fair splash only
serves to exploit transgender people. It certainly
helps Jenner in his quest
for more notoriety, but others, not so much.
I wish Jenner would
have stuck to her word.
She could have made great
strides for the transgender
community by focusing on
the issues and not herself. I
guess I was probably right
in the first place. Jenner’s
motive is that new spin-off
from The Kardashians. I
can see it coming to our
television screens soon.
Widespread Political Corruption

The TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership) free trade
agreement that is so secret
that no notes can be taken
in the meetings by our
elected officials. Even Independent Senator Bernie
Sanders says that even his
lawyers are not allowed to
look at the documents.
Here is a prime example
of the trans national corporations taking over our
political system and these
elected officials of ours
have allowed this to get to
this point in our country
because they accepted millions of dollars in political contributions for their
campaigns, so they sold
their souls for the love of
money.
The result of this is
widespread corruption
of our political system.
Look at the Republican
party that just says no to
everything that pertains
to the middleclass in our
country, but says yes to the
banksters and corporations
that are destroying this
country simply because
of their greed. These trade
agreements benefit the
wealthy and will continue
to outsource our factories
and jobs.
Unions in this country
are united against this TPP.
We in this country need to
unite together with these
unions and continue the
fight against these horrible
trade agreements.
What’s happening here
is the Trans National Corporations are being granted
authority over Governments.

we were treated to another
episode in the local newborn fawn saga. Our newest resident out here on the

“scrapping” over the territory under the bird feeder

morning there were four of
those cute little critters out

I don’t know if they
are the culprits or not,
but I also noticed that
the vine cutting, a gift
from niece-in-law Margo,
that I brought home and
planted along the fence
in the backyard has been
“cropped” nearly to the
ground. She has the “hops”
intertwined along the
porch on one side of her
house and they look great.
I’d hoped to get them to
grow through our chain
link fence out back and
mask the propane tank a
bit, but I may have to beg
for another “cutting” next
time we head up north.
Guess it is time to try
and lower the “chippy”
population around here,
but they are so cute to
watch! Jack, who doesn’t
want to kill them either,
is going to see if he can
find a “live trap” or two
and maybe we will try
relocating them to a less
residential area nearby.
Aside from the annual chores – mowing,
trimming, clean up and
planting – it is a great
time of year. Every week
something new blooms
around the yard. The lilacs are done now, but the
snowball bushes are now
loaded with blossoms and
my purple iris are showing off their finery down
on the riverbank.
What I call “Sara’s Peonies” are about to bloom
again too. Since we were
first married and bought a
house with a row of these
massive showy blooms, I
have loved that particular
flower and wanted them
up here too. Unfortunately, when I planted them,
all I ever got was a few
sprigs. Then friend Sara
showed up with a batch
of “roots” and showed
me how to do it. Seems
you barely cover them
with soil. Sure enough
they grew and after just a
few years started sporting
blooms in June.
Sara doesn’t live here
anymore but we keep in
touch and I try and send
her pictures when her
beautiful flowers bloom
in my yard.
It’s been a good spring
so far for growing things.
Will all of the rain we’ve
had lately, everything is
lush and green. The down
side of the scenario is that
the grass grows an inch
or two every few days it
seems and the mower –
and poor Jack – has been
put to the test keeping up
with it. Lately the grass is
a few points ahead I think.
The temptation was
there a few weeks ago and
I bought some seeds and
planted a little garden. We
haven’t done that lately,
but now there are four half
barrels right behind the
garage and with luck and,
if I remember to weed and
water, we will have a few
vegetables on the table
later on. I planted some
tomatoes, green beans, lettuce and onions. Now we
will see how it goes.
I am a big advocate of
“square foot gardening and
for several years we had
veggies in an old bathtub,
a barrel and a couple of
four by four raised beds
just outside the fenced in
area. Since the wildlife enjoyed more of the bounty
than we did, our newest attempt is “inside” the fence
where I thought it would
be safe.
Guess what? Yesterday
I spotted a big bunny –
also inside the fence – and
watched him escape by
squeezing through an
impossible little space by
the gate.
You just can’t win, or as
Jack is fond of telling me,
“They have to eat too…”

Carol S. Allen
Carol S. Allen, 83, of
Clare, Michigan went
home to be with the Lord
on 3-Jan-2015.
Mrs. Allen was born
in Clare, Michigan on
14-May-1931 to Arden
and Vada (Brasington)
Walters. She was married
to Myron W. Allen for 23
years where they reared a
family and farmed in the
Clare area. She started a
nursing career in Clare
and moved to Bradenton,
FL in 1972 where she
completed her Registered
Nursing degree. After
graduating from college,
she worked for a short
time at Manatee Memorial
Hospital but spent most of
her nursing career at L. W.
Blake Memorial Hospital
in the Critical/Coronary
Care Unit. Mrs. Allen
moved back to Clare,
Michigan in 1989, to be
near the majority of her
children and grand children. She worked at the
Clare Nursing Home as an
administrator until her retirement in 1996. She was
a generous and tireless
worker who served her
family, friends and church
with compassion and love.
She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by a
brother, Zane Walters
and sister-in-law Barbara
Walters of Midland, MI,
a sister, Ardene Wild, and
a sister-in-law, Bonnie
Wood both of Clare and
by her eight children: M.
Vincent Allen of Olympia,
WA, Larry and Carla (Sandal) Allen of Clare, LuAnn
Louch of Rosebush,
Mark Allen of Clare, Fay
Sanders of North Branch,
Brenda (Allen) Davis and
Jim Davis of Clare, Kerry

Eighteen grandchildren
and sixteen great-grandchildren also survive her.

preceded her in death.

Lawrence R. Dolland,
age 63 of Clare, passed
away Thursday, May 28,
2014. Lawrence was born
the son of Robert V. and
Virginia (Starkey) Dolland
on December 7, 1951 in
Mt. Clemens. He had
served his Country proudly
in the U.S. Air Force. Lawrence had worked as
a Respiratory Therapist
at the former Mt. Clemens General Hospital; he
had moved to Clare from
Fraser in 1997 and was a
member of the Prince of
Peace Lutheran Church. He enjoyed watching
Michigan sports teams
Josphine Slabic and aunt,
Debbie Loy.

86 of Clare, passed away
Saturday, May 30, 2015 at
the MidMichigan Medical
Center in Clare. Lyle was
born the son of the late
Carl A. and Lula (Gantz)
Gallagher on September
16, 1928 in Maple Rapids. He was united in marriage to Geraldine “Gerry” Baker on September 10,
1949. Lyle had served
his Country proudly in
the U.S. Marines during WWII. Following
his service he worked
as a Bulk Milk Hauler
in both Shiawassee and
Clare Counties. Following his retirement he and
Gerry enjoyed spending
time with both family
and friends at their winter
home in Florida and summer getaway at Higgins
Lake.
Lyle is survived by
his loving wife, Gerry;
children Steven (Alison)
Gallagher and Stephanie

passed away suddenly
at his home on Monday,

Brandon took great
pride in volunteering for
the Salvation Army and
Goodwill. He was an avid
Detroit Tigers and Detroit
Lions Fan. In his spare
time, Brandon enjoyed
bowling with family and
friends and was known to
chase storms, always trying to spot a tornado.

Peggy Jeanette Underwood age 88, passed away
on Thursday, May 14, at
her home. She was born
the daughter of Virgil and
Lois (McCray) Runyon on
February 8, 1927 in Geneva
Indiana. Following graduation
from Clare High school,
she married Ray Underwood and they had three
children. Following their
divorce, Peggy worked
several jobs, she clerked in
a local Dime Store, assisted
at the Clare Bakery, waited
tables at the Dunlop Cafe
and the Lone Pine Restaurant ,waited tables at two
restaurant’s in Houghton
Lake, and worked assembly at Essex Wire in
Clare. After retirement,
Slim Ellsworth came into
her life and was grandpa to
her grandchildren, he died
in 2005.

several nephews, and her
great nephew Jack Welch of
Baltimore, Md. She will
also be missed by her friend
Kevin and all of his kin. She was preceded in death
by her son, Ronald Underwood and two brothers,

Allen - age 79 of Clare
passed away peacefully at
her home surrounded by
her family, on Tuesday,
May 26, 2015. Adele was
born Adele Rose Schoff, in
Detroit Michigan on July 7,
1935 to parents Delbert and
Viola (Bowerman) Schoff.
On October 3, 1953 Adele
married David Brock Allen
in Lake Orion and together
they raised four children
eventually settling in Clare,
Michigan where she lived
for most of her adult life.
Adele was an avid swimmer, horsewoman, gardener
and reader. She loved the
outdoors, yet knew how to
make a house a home and
kept an open door for any
person or animal in need.
In addition to being warm
and kind, she was extremely bright and artistic. As
a teen, she was offered a
scholarship to the prestigious Detroit Institute of
Art, reflective of her natural creativity and artistic
ability. In addition to raising 4 children, she volunteered as a horse 4-H leader
for 25 years, introducing
many young people to the
joys and responsibilities
of training, caring for, and
riding horses. Adele was a
gentle and patient teacher
who always made learning
fun. This was true as a 4-H
leader, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Being a lifelong
learner, Adele started her
college career after raising
her children and obtained
an undergraduate degree
in Biology from Central
Michigan University in
1982. She later obtained
her real estate license and
worked for Century 21
Realty for 25 years.

After coming up short
of a district championship a year ago the Clare
baseball team made certain
it wouldn’t be denied this
season. After surviving a
scare from Harrison in the
semi-final game the Pioneers dominated Beaverton
in the division three district
final, topping the Beavers
12-5 and allowing Clare to
celebrate its’ championship
on its home field.
The Pioneers took a
10-1 lead through four
innings and held off a mini
Beaverton rally late in the
game for the win.
Max Swan got the
win, tossing six innings
and giving up five runs,
two earned on six hits, 10
strikeouts and four walks.

Zach Anderson suffered the loss, pitching six
innings and giving up five
earned runs on eight hits,
three strikeouts and nine
walks.
Gabe Denton had two
hits to lead the Clare offense with Charlie Bugbee,
Dice, Swan, Bates and Vida
all getting one hit each.
Jackson had two hits for
the Hornets and Anderson,
Nunnally, Brody Lewis and
Justice Walraven all had
one hit each.

Stabilize the
right leg for
more
consistency
“Right leg float” is a
common flaw I see in many
of my student’s swings.
Ideally in the backswing
the right leg (right handers)
acts as a brace in which the
upper body turns against.
Bracing the leg helps
control the backswing
by limiting unnecessary
movement. Often times
I see either the right leg
swaying back or the right
knee losing its flex. These
movements lead to fat or
thin contact, stray shots,
and reduce power.
There are a few different
ways to practice your right
leg backswing motion.
First, you can hit shots
making sure your right
knee is keeping its flex to
the top of the backswing.
Next try burying a ball
half way in the ground.
Stand on the ball so that
the outside of your right
foot is on the ball and your
instep is on the ground. Hit
balls from this position.
The weight will stay on
the instep in the backswing
which in turn keeps your
leg braced. Lastly you can
try hitting some balls while
pointing the toes of your
right foot inward toward
the ball. This position
greatly inhibits the movement of the right leg.
Many times less is more
in golf and this is true with
the movement of the right
leg in the backswing. If
you find your right leg is
floating on the backswing,
give the fore mentioned
drills/thoughts a try. Consistency and power will be
the reward for this swing
improvement.

Lady Eagles upset in district semis
It was cold. It was rainy.
It was a season ending 9-2
loss. Saturday was a bad
day in what was otherwise a good season for
the Farwell Lady Eagle
softball team, as they lost
to Beaverton at the division
three regional at Clare.
Things started off well
for Farwell, as Alysha
Luster and Kate Saupe
both doubled and scored in
the first inning to give the
Eagles an early 2-0 lead.
Saupe was dominant in
the pitcher’s circle through
the first three innings but
as the rain fell harder and
harder the Beaverton bats
woke up in the bottom of
the fourth, where it scored
seven runs to take control
of the game.
The Beavers reached
base on a couple of walks,
infield hits and a couple
of plays the Eagles just
couldn’t quite make in
what turned into a nightmare inning. The Beavers
then added single runs in
the fifth and sixth innings
to bring the muddy final
score to 9-2.
Shortly after the comple-
tion of the game it was announced that the championship game would be pushed
back to Monday as field
conditions had become too
poor to continue play.
Luster finished with a

Seiter and Dani Hanna adding one hit each.
The Eagles finish the
season 29-9 and won their
first Jack Pine Conference
championship since 1978.

was founded by Bill and
Lori Schuh in Harrison, on
March 5, 1985. Their locally-owned and operated

In the early-2000s, the

current name, eventually

Pitchford was born in
Farwell on October 31,
1928 and lived there all
her life until her death on
May 7, 2012 at the age of
85. The booklet dedication says, “She was a
longtime member of the
museum and had always
wanted a walking tour to
help people remember
Farwell in days gone by.
This is our loving tribute
to Marilyn.”
Twenty-nine historical
sites, with vintage pictures from the museum
are featured in the book,
which includes a description and photo of the first
house in the Village built
by George Hitchcock. A
map of the different site
locations is on the back
cover with a code (used
on each description in the
book) denoting whether
the building is still standing, has only foundations or no longer exists.
Even the original county
courthouse is featured. No
picture was available but
a drawing was found of
the building, which was
located next to the old
hotel, finally known as the
Parkview.
A special Open House
is planned from 12 to 4
p.m. on Saturday, June
20 to dedicate the new

a public hearing to review the grant application to
the Michigan State Housing Development Authority for funding under the Michigan CDBG Program.

Condensed Minutes June 1, 2015
The regular meeting of the Clare City Commission
was called to order at 6:00 pm by Mayor Pat Humphrey
in the Commission Chambers who led the Pledge of
Allegiance. Present were: Commissioners Bob Bonham, Karla Swanson, Jean McConnell, Carolyn (Gus)
Murphy, and Pat Humphrey. Absent: None.
Motion to approve the consent agenda was supported and approved.

The Carleen K. Moore,
RN Nursing Excellence
Award. Bethany Corner,
R.N., of MidMichigan
Medical Center – Midland
and Bonnie Khabir, R.N.,
of MidMichigan Urgent
Care – Clare, received the
recognition during the Fifth
Annual Carleen K. Moore,
RN Nursing Excellence
Celebration recently held
at Saginaw Valley State
University.
Hosted by the Department of Nursing at Saginaw Valley State University, the award recognizes the
contributions of exemplary
registered nurses in the
region. Recipients are
registered nurses who have
exemplified excellence in
clinical practice, education,
frontline leadership, and
community involvement.
This award is intended to
honor the excellent practice
of our frontline care givers.
“Our nurses are at the
heart of what we do here
at MidMichigan Health,”
said Jan Penney, R.N.,
vice president of nursing
at MidMichigan Health.
“They are helping to lead
initiatives to increase access to care and improve
outcomes by focusing on
primary care, prevention,
wellness, chronic disease
management and the
coordination of care among
health care providers and
settings. Most importantly,
they ensure the patients are
the focus of all that we do.”
A member of the MidMichigan Health family
for 17 years, Khabir, of Mt.
Pleasant, is the manager of
MidMichigan Urgent Care
– Clare. Having coordinated the opening of the subsidiary in February 1998,
as manager, she is responsible for daily operations,
inspection preparation for
accrediting organizations,
and helps ensure that Urgent Care’s services meet
the needs of the community
at all times.
Khabir has participated in several community events, which have
supported car seat safety,
as well as cystic fibrous.
In addition she has served
as a health fair coordinator, business expo chair,
and American Red Cross
volunteer. She received her
registered nursing diploma
from St. Joseph Hospital
School of Nursing in Towson, Md.
