HSCA is competing for a chance at more than $600,000 in grant funding, including a grand prize of $100,000. This is a nationwide competition for animal shelters (and their communities) aimed at getting more animals adopted or returned to their owners than ever before. The challenge takes place throughout the months of June through August and the HSCA has set a goal of placing 675 animals in forever homes during that time. For the challenge, HSCA chose the theme of “Rescue Me.” Throughout the summer at the shelter, HSCA will offer Save Me Saturdays with reduced adoption fees for a special group, including police officers, firefighters, EMTS, doctors, nurses and more. Five times during the summer, the shelter will host Empty the Shelter weekends on a Saturday and Sunday with no-cost adoption fees for qualifying applicants. More people than ever are taking to the web to share their two cents about parenting, gardening, hobbies, and life in general. Call 926-1108 advertisements that dance across their web space or from the items they promote in their posts. After reading blogs posted by friends and strangers, I began itching to create my own site to share my experiences and create impressive "before and after" photos showcasing my work. There is only one problem: I have a less than stellar track record when it comes to hobbies, and it seems my blog would only feature my shortcomings in bread-baking, woodworking, and scrap booking, to name a few. After further reflection, I found comfort in knowing every great blog started with a blank website and a single post. Similarly, each talented artist, writer, and crafter extraordinaire was faced with challenges and failures along the way. Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus were Always Natural, once beginner Always Fresh & bloggers, and admitAlways Delicious! ted at first they did not know where to start. They began Family Owned “Since 1946” with a theme and an Old Fashioned interest, and now Meat Market have around two million readers who read their blog “The Minimalists” about living a meaningful life with less stuff. Joshua and Ryan share basic tips on why to blog, including: you’ll become a better writer, you’ll become a better thinker, you’ll inspire others, and it’s free. They also give three reasons not to blog: money, notoriety, and raffic. If done for the right reasons, and done well (by choosing a specific theme, staying committed, and keeping it honest and simple), Joshua says we will truly lead a more intentional life. The blogosphere gives us the opportunity to share, interact, and learn from each other, and provides the knowledge base and encouragement to sharpen our skills—no matter how novice they are to begin with. While I contemplate building a birdhouse, making jewelry, or writing poetry, with a little luck and most importantly, some dedication, maybe my next hobby will be worth blogging about.
