Kia ora and welcome back to the Wakatipu High School
newsletter after a week away. As you will see below there
has been plenty happening, and plenty coming up.
Thank you very much to the large numbers of parents
who have turned up to our recent Excellence Assembly,
Junior Next Steps and the Branches Camp parent meeting
- even if your teenage students may moan about you
coming along, secretly they actually like it, and it's
important that you are engaged and informed to support
their learning, progress and achievement.

New School - progress on the new school continues on a
number of fronts and I thought I’d give you an overview
of a couple of them:
ILE - a key feature of the new school is that it will be an
‘Innovative Learning Environment’, which essentially
means that it will be built with larger, more open and
flexible learning spaces (although ‘specialised’ spaces, eg
Gym, Food Tech and workshops are essentially the same
as now). At last week’s Excellence Assembly I spoke about
how, in particular due to the impact of technology, our
society and economy is changing and going to change
even more rapidly, and the effect that this is having and
will have on the education our students need to be
successful in their future. I also noted that even with this
we remain very focussed on supporting our students to
attain the education and qualifications, such as NCEA
Level 2 and University Entrance, that they need for their
pathways.
As part of the move to our new school we have developed
our D15 and surrounding rooms into a prototype ILEspace where teachers and students have the opportunity
to develop effective practice in these spaces. This
semester English and Social Sciences teachers have one or
two classes each in there, and even though it is a change it
provides some great opportunities and flexibility for
teaching and learning and it is progressing well.
Whare - as you may have seen in the Mountain Scene
last week, a group has been formed to progress getting a
Whare built as part of the new school. It is a great
initiative for WHS and the community, and I will keep
you posted as this project progresses.
Webcam - the actual construction of the new school is
now underway and going well. Click here for views from
the webcam.
‘Vaping’ - is a bit of a new thing which has started to
appear at school (rather than me describing it please click
here for further information if you don’t know what it is).
The key thing for us is that while they may only be
inhaling ‘caramel cheesecake’ they may also be using it for
nicotine and so it is not permitted at school. Thank you in
anticipation of your support in this.
Paid Union Meeting - one has been scheduled for the
morning of Thurs 8 September, ie still three weeks away,
which also happens to be our Senior Next Steps evening.
More details will follow in the next few weeks, but WHS
will be open and run classes from late morning that day.
Awhi Fund - with Branches Camp fees having now been
added to accounts, it is a good opportunity for a reminder
re our wonderful Awhi Fund. The Awhi Fund is supported
by the WHS Foundation and is to support students and
families financially, for school fees, camps and trips,
uniform, BYOD devices and even extra and co-curricular
activities. If you would like to know more about the Awhi
Fund please contact your child’s Dean or our Guidance
Counsellor, Vicki Patton.
Exams are over for seniors, but this term remains a very
important one for teaching and learning for all students and we’re nearly halfway though it already, please support
students to be focussed on their education at this
important time.
Enjoy the weekend, especially if you’re a skier or boarder
as tomorrow looks like the pick :)

BLENHEIM JAZZ FESTIVAL
This year was an extremely successful trip for Best Served Chilled as both the Big Band and Jazz
Combo gained Gold Grading awards at the competition. This was particularly pleasing given the
number of new students in the Big Band for whom this was their first time at Blenheim.
Overall, there were seventeen schools represented with twenty- eight bands in total and in another
first for Wakatipu High School two students made the All Stars band which comprised the top
sixteen students from across all the bands. Luke Petre (Trombone) and Ella Macbeth (Tenor
Saxophone) joined other musicians to rehearse music for the gala concert held on the final evening.
Three other students gained mentions from the judges which placed them in the top group of
musicians for their instrument. Bence Csontos (Trumpet), Mika Craggs (Guitar), Eliott Allemand
(Alto Saxophone). Overall, it was a great trip as the students played at two primary schools, one
tavern, a restaurant/cafe and the Blenheim Combined Clubs. There was also lots of opportunities to
hear other bands and have a workshop with the judges.
Special thanks to Luke Belcher for all his work with the Combo and Alistair Monteath and Vince
Leahy for their work with the Big Band and the brass/woodwind students. This was very much a
team effort but these three have ensured the standard of the musicians skills has grown
exponentially this year. Thanks also to our wonderful parents who helped feed and organise the
students. Niki Grennell (chef), Gill Gloag, Monique Scott, Vinnie McCorkindale (sous chefs and
indispensable helpers) and Donna Baldey (International student support).

THEATRE FEDERATION ONE ACT PLAY
Congratulations to this year’s One Act Play Cast who competed in Invercargill on 6 August in the first round of the Theatre Federation National One Act Play
Festival. They won ‘Best Youth Production’ for their performance of “Eating the Wolf” by NZ playwright Sarah Delahunty and therefore qualified for the
regionals in Dunedin this weekend. A huge thank you to Jane Taylor, Richard Carroll and Catherine Lewis for their time and support for the day trip to
Invercargill.
The 18-strong cast is excited about competing this weekend at The Globe Theatre in Dunedin. We wish them all the best for another great show.
The cast includes: Ashley Burney, Vanessa Woodward, Esmond Paterson, Ella Buchanan, Beatrice Onions, Amelia Hamilton, Sophia Harris, Kiki ClarkeLiechti, Hugh Taylor, Will Gloag, Theo Baumfield, Daniel Lewis, Candace Carroll, Hannah Jarocka, Billie Parvin.

G&T UPDATE
Parent and student workshop: NCEA and the Gifted Student
for Parents and Students
There has been a great response to the Parent and Student workshop
which will be held in the WHS Library from 4:30-5:30 this Monday 22
August.
The workshop, presented by Brooke Trenwith from Cognition
Education, looks at supporting gifted students and their parents
through NCEA assessments.
It covers:
- Effective study skills
- Utilising digital technologies to extend students, and
- Stress and time management techniques
- All parents and students are warmly welcomed to come along.

Half Day School Like-Minds Get together
There is a joint event with GT students from Mount Aspiring, Cromwell
College, and WHS Wednesday 21 September, based on Tournament of
the Minds format, with a view to enter a couple of WHS school teams in
Tournament of the Minds in 2017. The idea of the day is for like minds
to get together and be immersed in a variety of fun, challenging and
creative tasks. Each school is slightly different but it will be a mix of
Year 7, 8, 9, and 10 students. The day will be held at the Cromwell
Sports Club and we will start at 9am and finish at 2pm. If everything
goes to plan, we will have a follow up day in Term 4 which will be
similar but more competitive.
We would ideally like to send a team from Year 9 and Year 10 or two
mixed Year 9 and 10 teams. There are four people per team. Students
in Year 9 and 10 who are interested in participating please contact Mrs
Luus.

NCEA EXAMINATIONS
On Wednesday 17 August, all students doing NCEA exams were
provided with an NCEA summary sheet and a list of external
examinations that they are currently entered for. If students wish to
adapt their assessment programme and be removed from any external
assessments, they should discuss this immediately with their subject
teacher(s) and parent/caregiver as this process must be completed by
Friday 26 August. Please ask to see your child's NCEA summary sheet
and entries summary to support a discussion about their academic
achievement and exam entries for 2016.
SENIOR PRACTICE EXAMS & SENIOR NEXT STEPS
With the school's senior practice exams having just been completed,
parents/caregivers and students will receive an exam results report on
Friday 2 September.
Senior Next Steps (Parent-Teacher interviews) will follow on Thursday 8
September from 4-7 pm. Details of the evening, including how to make a
booking, will be provided in next week's newsletter.
YEAR 10 SEXUAL HEALTH SESSION
On Tuesday 23 August during P5, Dr Kathryn Smith will be speaking
to all Year 10s regarding a number of important topics
including; contraception, STI’s (sexually transmitted infections),
relationships, consent, sexual violence, alcohol/drugs and sex,
fertility education, and services to access when support is needed.
This is to support and extend the current learning around sexuality
education that is occurring in Health classes.

SPORTS COORDINATOR UPDATE
Peak to Peak - Ben Ellis, Sam Robbie, Alfie Duffy, Archie Ritchie & Reuben (Witness the Litness) got 2nd in
the schools category, and 10th overall in an outstanding time of 2hrs 18mins.
Freestyle Skiing – Well done Holly Ingram on a great result last weekend and putting in a gutsy
effort coming in second place in the Piki Maunga Rangatahi (Big Mountain Youth) Round 1 of the Southern
Lakes Youth Freeride Tour at Cardrona.
Otago Southland Ski and Snowboard Championships - Well done to all of the WHS students who
competed at Cardrona last week in the regional championships. Some great results were seen all over the
mountain with teams and individuals winning medals.

Football Fundraiser - The Boys Football team had a fundraising opportunity last Sunday clearing an
escarpment on a local land owner’s property. A cool 5 hours of solid work moving branches into piles to be
burnt off at a later date where made. Trekking up and down the hill side was a great work out for them
before they head off to Invercargill for Tournament Week.
Thanks to John Hollibon for supporting these boys in getting this opportunity.
Sporting Blues - Wakatipu High School's Sporting Blues Awards will be held at Skyline on Friday, 28 October 2016. The Sporting Blues will
encompass all athletes from Years 9 - 13. This is a great opportunity to celebrate excellence in sports at WHS and we appreciate you taking the time to
make nominations. This form is for nominations in the sporting realm for students in Years 9 to 13. All nominations must be submitted no later than
12pm Monday, 5th September.
Blues Awards are given to students falling under two categories: Achievement Blues and Service Blues. Please see the Achievement and Service criteria.
Nominations will be read and considered by our Blues Committee, whom have the final say over the success of each nomination. Nominees will be
notified regarding the success of their nomination by the end of September. To ensure your sporting code is represented in the power point presentation,
please email photos of the team/individual to jmunday@wakatipu.school.nz by Monday 5 September.

Country Cross – Congratulations to Aleks Chiefetz who ran 5th in the New Zealand Cross Country
Championships in Auckland last week. It is a great result and an improvement on the NZ Secondary Schools
event not long ago in Rotorua.
Ice Hockey - Queenstown Ice Hockey Club members (all WHS Students) make up 14 places in the 'U17 Junior
Stampede' ice hockey team representing the Southern Ice Hockey League. The team started training in April
and travelled to Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin playing 15 games between 11 June - 13 August. Of the 15
games played, they won 12, lost two and lost another one in overtime in a penalty shootout, finishing the season
at the top (GOLD) 5 points ahead of 2nd placed Auckland.

These boys (and girl) are also members of the Wakatipu High School Ice Hockey Team and will represent the
school in Dunedin at SISS Ice Hockey Tournament from 29 August. There are several more WHS students who
will join the team in Dunedin. WHS also has 7 players who have been selected in the South Island U17 Team to
play against North Island at the Skate of Origin in Auckland on 3 September.
Junior Girls Volleyball- Practice has started and is held every Wednesday at 3:30- 4:45pm in the school gym. This is for all junior girls who are interested
in playing Volleyball. A great opportunity to get involved in a new sport!
Tracksuits – Any tracksuits that have not yet be returned are well overdue and required immediately for tournament week. Please return to Mr Munday in
the PE office ASAP.

RUGBY WRAP UP
2016 Rugby Season
Well it certainly has been quite a massive season for WHS Rugby. All three teams have won trophies from their various competitions. Below is a summary
about the success each team has experienced this year. A massive thank you to all of the coaches, managers, parents and supporters for what has been one of
the most successful seasons WHS has seen in many years. A big thank you to Mark McKone who does a pile of work behind the scenes for rugby, to the
Wakatipu Rugby Club for their support, and Fergburger for their sponsorship. As the season is drawing to a close we will begin to turn our focus to 2017 and
the needs of each team. If you are keen to support the boys and/or girls team in the future, please contact me via email at lallen@wakatipu.school.nz.
U14 Rugby Team
This team had the responsibility of defending the B grade U14 trophy after WHS won it last year. The U14 team just missed out on making it to the top four
this season. The team had a great win against Verdon College 36-17 on Saturday to bring the trophy back home. Nine players from this team have made Otago
Country wider training squads which is a massive achievement. Five players have made the Otago Country U14's; Charlie Campbell, Harry Clark, Levi Collins,
Keanu Panapa and Alesana Tulafono. Also five players are in the Otago Country U13's; Toby Duffy, Charlie Hogan, Lucas Erskine, Oliver Herron and Keanu
Panapa. The team was coached by parents Glen Wallace and Andy Erskine and managed by Helen Evans.
WHS U15 team
After winning the B grade U14 title last year, this year the team’s goal was to make the semi-finals of
the open U15 grade in Southland. The team made it through to the finals and beat the top Southland
Boys High School U15 team convincingly 29-5, on Saturday 6 August at Oreti Park in Invercargill.
This was a fantastic achievement for WHS rugby. The team was coached by parents Ted Mason,
Craig Anstiss, Grant Bamford and managed by Ian Collin.
WHS U17 team
This team played 12 games and went through the season unbeaten in the Southland competition. The
U17’s played Southland Boys High Blue in the finals on Saturday 6 August at Oreti Park in
Invercargill, a team which they drew with earlier in the season. The boys won the final 50-21. The
team won Division 2 of the Southland Senior Secondary Schools grade. This was a rebuilding year for
the team and their goal was to win Division 2 and look to move to Division 1 next year and compete
against the top 1st XV teams in Southland. Three boys from this team have been selected into the
Otago Country U16 wider training squad, they are; Ben Ellis, Alfie Duffy and James Simpson. Chai
Proctor has been named in the Otago Country U18 wider training squad. The team was coached by
WHS teacher Ken McIntyre, James Cavanagh and Scott Hayden and were managed by Laura Allen.

ARTS COORDINATOR UPDATE
Nominations are now open for Wakatipu High School's Cultural Blues Awards, which will be held at WHS Performing Arts Block (PA Block) on
Tuesday 1 November 2016. This is a great opportunity to celebrate excellence in the Arts at WHS and to show appreciation to those that have supported
student success throughout their year and their time at Wakatipu High School.
The Cultural Blues will encompass all students from Years 9 - 13 and nominees will be notified if their application has been successful. We appreciate
you taking the time to make nominations. Please review the Cultural Blues Awards criteria prior to submitting a nomination by clicking here.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY
Level 1 Food Technology students celebrated completing all their
internal achievement standard assessments by doing a MASTER CHEF
MYSTERY BOX CHALLENGE. The students worked in groups of four
and were given a mystery box of 10 ingredients from which they had to
make a two course meal in 50 minutes. Below is what they created!
SPELLING BEE
Congratulations to Hylton Briscoe who has made it through to the
National Final of the New Zealand Spelling Bee. He will travel to
Auckland to participate in the hotly contested final round.
Compatriots Seth Mawhinney and Om Alva were unfortunately
knocked out in Rounds 3 and 2 respectively. However they proudly
state that they are among the top 200 spellers in the country!

BOARD OF TRUSTEES STUDENT ELECTION
MEMO TO ALL STUDENTS: Board of Trustees Student Representative Election 2016
Nominations are invited for the election of one student representative to the Board of Trustees.
All full time students from Years 9 – 13 are eligible to be placed on the electoral roll, stand for election and vote in the school’s election for the Student
Representative on the Wakatipu High School Board of Trustees.
If you are considering standing for an election, you need to print the nomination form emailed to all students or obtain a nomination form from the school office.
This form is to be completed and returned to Miss Dawson at the school office before midday on Thursday 1 September, along with a short candidate statement
(400 words max) that will be printed as part of the voting paper. There will be a list of candidates' names as they come to hand on the notice board by the School
Office.
The voting roll is open for inspection at the School Office and may be viewed during the hours the office is open.
The student representative's term of office is 12 months. Further information may be found in the Student Trustee Handbook - this link was emailed to all
students on 17 August.
Voting papers will be given to students on Tuesday 6 September in Tutor Groups. All students standing for the election may speak at the full school assembly on
Wednesday 14 September and voting will close at midday on Thursday 15 September 2016.
