The values given in this brochure have been calculated using the methods of measurement (according to regulation (EC) No. 715/2007). The figures do not refer to a specific vehicle and are not part of the offer, but only serve the purpose of comparing different vehicle types. The fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of a vehicle depend not only on the efficient use of fuel by the vehicle, but are also influenced by driving style and other non-technical factors. Additional equipment can lead to increasing the curb weight and slightly raising the stated consumption and CO2 figures. CO2 is the main greenhouse gas responsible for global warming. 2 3 THE FIRST OPEL WAS SOLD IN 1899. NOT ONLY WAS IT A SUCCESS, IT MARKED THE BIRTH OF A GREAT ENTERPRISE. AFTER OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OF PROGRESS AND INNOVATION THE FUTURE OF OPEL IS REPRESENTED BY FASCINATING CARS LIKE THE INSIGNIA, ASTRA, Zafira tourer, AMPERA, Meriva, Corsa, and our OPC-Models. THIS GUIDE DEMONSTRATES THE DIVERSITY OF THE BRAND AND EXPLAINS WHAT MAKES US TICK: THE LOVE OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY, THE ART OF ENGINEERING AND BOLD, EXPRESSIVE DESIGN. ALL OF THIS CAN BE EXPRESSED QUITE SIMPLY: WIR LEBEN AUTOS! Karl-friedrich stracke CEO, a d a m o pe l ag 4 5 “Wir leben Autos” is the living expression of Opel’s longstanding core values. “Wir leben Autos” does not only refer to our German roots and the love we share for German engineering, it also expresses the strong emotion and passion that influences everything we do. The “we” stands for the enthusiasm and the affirmative, positive attitude our employees and dealers share with each other. It should also convey that we at Opel are at home in the middle of society and want to make a positive contribution to its future. We don’t just build cars, we live for cars. The word “leben” represents our high level of energy – an energy that everyone who is touched by Opel can feel. The emotionally charged, ground-breaking design of our vehicles is a perfect example. Finally, we believe that “cars” will be much more in the future than a means of transportation. With our vehicles it’s not just about the drive – they are an essential part of our lives. 6 7 We combine our personal experiences with those of our customers to make their daily mobility easier and more agreeable. By reflecting each day anew about how we can sustainably enrich peoples’ lives through our practical innovations. What moves us 10 11 passion Excitement is contagious. And only those filled with passion have the ability to stimulate others. We work enthusiastically on the dream cars of tomorrow. This we are certain of: the best ideas Photo: getty images are the ones that come from the heart. What moves us inventiveness Imagining the impossible, bringing together what seems incompatible. We are seeking new solutions and are adhering to a clearly defined task: innovation made by Opel must be tangible in everyday life. We work on this with dedication. Photo: getty images 12 13 What moves us responsibility Everything we do affects others. The quality of life for future generations depends on our ideas. We recognize our own activities as part of the solution for all: only those who take responsibility have the ability to shape the future. A PROJECT FOR THE FUTURE The Opel initiative “Project Earth” supports environmental protection organizations in rescuing the last remaining places of paradise on earth. Fotos: getty-images IF ANYONE LEFT FOOTPRINTS IN HISTORY, HE HAS: BUZZ ALDRIN was the second man to step onto the moon’s surface. That was on the 21st of July, 1969. Ex-astronaut Aldrin is now 81 years old, and, since his moon landing, has concerned himself with the future of our Earth. - That’s why, together with Opel, he brought the PROJECT EARTH initiative into being. The goal: promoting the saving of the planet through exceptional individuals and organizations. “I left my footprints on the moon” says Aldrin, “but the question is: what traces are we leaving on the earth?” The name says it all: with Project Earth is sending a group of young people, led by Buzz Aldrin, to four of the earth’s remaining places of paradise. It will not only bring attention to their impending destruction, but also vigorously support local research and environmental groups. The 15 participants from nine countries applied to join Project Earth after an appeal on the Internet – and were selected from a multitude of candidates. Their targets: areas of the earth where the upheavals and dangers of environmental destruction are especially palpable. The Arctic and the rainforest, the African savannah and the Gulf of California. Project Earth 16 17 THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA The Cousteau Society, founded by the oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, is committed to, among other things, the protection of dolphins in the Gulf of California. Project Earth is providing valuable support. THE RAINFOREST Panama is one of the Rainforest Foundation’s centres of action. Founded by the musician Sting, it is dedicated to the protection of the rainforest, and is supported by Project Earth. » Climate change is a reality. So we have to be pro active and show more respect for our planet.« Katie Melua, Opel Brand Ambassador is also an example of how Opel is committed to the environmentally friendly use of technology. Opel has always taken a leading position whenever it came to environmental protection. It was the first automotive manufacturer in Europe to standardize the fitting of catalytic converters across the complete range. The latest example: the new Ampera, the first fully practical electric car. A famous fan of the Ampera is the British singer Katie Melua who also works with Project Earth. She accompanied the participants on their expedition through the Arctic. WE DEMAND A LOT: Developing CARS THAT ARE EXCITING. LIKE OUR STARS: ASTRA GTC, Zafira tourer und Ampera. 18 19 “The quest for perfection never ends” As Vice President of Design, Mark Adams gives the cars their design character – and follows a clear objective: the high art of engineering will become perceptible through ground-breaking design. “Isn’t this the perfect car?” is the header for the Opel Insignia on page 55. What are you saying – have you and your team designed the perfect car, Mr Adams? Mark Adams: That is a provocative question and I’ll give you a provocative answer: yes. The Insignia could not be better. Form, function, comfort and security – everything blends together perfectly. That’s confirmed by the multitude of awards. And yet the word “perfect” always sounds as though there’s no room for improvement. But that’s not the way we think at Opel. Perfection must be sought after again and again, the search never ends. And that’s why, in my eyes, both the Astra GTC and the Zafira Tourer are, in their own ways, perfect cars. You have proclaimed a new philosophy for Opel: “sculptural elegance with German precision”. What do you mean by this? Adams: We are describing a new language of design, which will be applied to all new Opels: flowing, soft forms meet exact, tightly drawn lines. It recalls an athletic figure and it emphasizes the dynamics and technical innovations of the car. We began using this language with the Opel Insignia and we have continued this with the new Astra and new Meriva. It’s all about two vital elements: technical precision and emotion. The emotional appeal is created by the three-dimensional forms that lend a car its elegance. And the exact lines, the carefully designed details represent the art of engineering and exactness. That’s why ground-breaking design is so important to us. Sometimes it is perhaps not consciously perceived – but it always underscores the character of an Opel. A notable element of the design is the blade sculpture on the side. Why is that important? Adams: The challenge here is to provide each model with its own face, yet to make clear that each is a member of one family. All possess the same gene, but the differences are important as well. The blade sculpture, which runs from the rear d oor, then soars toward the A pillar, is a good example of this. Both the Opel Insignia and Astra have this, but for the Astra we have turned it around, since this better fits the proportions of the car and emphasizes the sportiness. Both cars make use of the same line. With the Insignia, however, we have an elegant car with a touch of sportiness, and with the Astra we have a sporty car with a touch of elegance. And each of them is clearly an Opel. Naturally, we will be sticking to this principle in the future for the other models as well. What is more important today – technology or design? Adams: Both belong inseparably together. There are cars that are technically sound, but they have a lacklustre 20 21 All great car models “are distinguished by optics and technology that form a union.” Briton Mark born 1961, has been responsible as Vice President for the design of all Opel vehicles since 2007. He studied automobile design at the renowned Royal College of Art in London as well as mechanical engineering and automotive engineering. Adams, Wing lights give the Opel Insignia its unmistakable appearance. Distinctive side lines emphasize the masculine design and are so boring that they are no fun to drive. appearance. And by the same token, there are cars that look great at first glance. But everyone soon notices that it's all just show; boring technology with elaborate packaging. All really successful models throughout automotive history have distinguished themselves through the unity formed by appearance and technology. The image that you outwardly project corresponds exactly to what you have on the inside. And so the task of the designer is merely to provide technical values with an optical form? Many people believe that we designers are responsible for the outer appearance and that the technicians take care of the rest. That’s a false notion. First Adams: The line of the roof recalls a coupé. The aerodynamics are super: cd value: 0.26. of all, technicians and designers have to work closely from the very beginning of planning a car and have to formulate their differing requirements. It is a great moment for both, when they stand before a plan and realize: wow, everything here fits together, this is a car with character, something very special. It is at this moment, however, that a great part of the work for the designers begins – and they must take care of the technical details. Where for example? Throughout the complete interior. How can you appreciate a car’s quality? It’s certainly not just the exterior design. You spend a lot of time in the driver’s seat, and for that reason everything there has to be right. Adams: 22 23 Flowing surfaces meet precise lines – a perfect interplay of forms and exciting surfaces! The new grille creates a new statement of confidence, the Opel logo is displayed centrally in the chrome crossbar. The blade sculpture on the flanks lends the body dynamism. The characteristic LED daytime running light ensures maximum attention. Designing the interior of a car is just as much work as designing the exterior – the difference being that the design of the interior is perceived with greater subjectivity than the outer appearance. Could you explain that in greater detail? We had never previously put so much thought into the interior as with the O pel Insignia and Astra. Also, here you can appreciate these themes: emotion and quality, about which we have just spoken. Many design elements make their appearance here once again: the wing or the blade, for example. The smooth, easily flowing forms ensure that one feels protected in the interior and at the same time that one has a lot of room. And the tactile qualities are particularly Adams: important. Many people are unaware that they perceive the quality of a car through the colours, materials, and workmanship of the interior. In the case of our new models, you will only find materials that are pleasant to touch and that still look good with the passing of time. Moreover, you won’t find any sharp corners, only smooth edges. Each tiny detail has been conceived with an enormously high standard of quality, every switch locks into place. These thousands of details in a car communicate quality and turn every journey into a positive experience. Ever better, faster, more stylish: the Opel Astra is a classic and perhaps the most surprising example of the art of completely redefining proven traditions. The new generation accomplished. The Opel compact car is now in its tenth generation and, just like its predecessor, the Kadett, is using innovation to redefine its market segment. And the latest model in the Astra range is in this respect a true Opel: the new Astra GTC draws out the full design and driving dynamics potential of the model range. A wealth of technical features like the HiPerStrut front suspension and the standard high-tech design of the sports chassis provide perfect handling characteristics and precise, direct steering. The GTC’s suspension architecture perfectly matches to the intelligent, adaptive FlexRide system. The mechatronic chassis automatically adjusts to road conditions, cornering speed, vehicle movements, and The new Astra GTC draws out the full design and driving dynamics potential of the model range to the individual driving style, combining an increased stability with enhanced cornering ability. With its ground-breaking design, sophisticated technology and typical Opel innovations, this, the newest sprout in the brand’s family tree, has what it takes to build on an already strong position. Because whether you want to travel relaxed with plenty of space, or transporting a family of seven, or you need the whole interior space to transport something – this is the right car. With the completely reworked Flex7® seating system, this third generation of the compact monocab defines the new standards of versatility and interior quality. But the innovations go well beyond the newly developed, flexible seating configuration. The overall impression is one of high-class elegance. The premium design, roomy interior atmosphere, an uprated chassis and other new technologies enable relaxed driving with maximum comfort and safety. At its launch, the Opel Zafira was the first 7-seater in its class and set the standard for fully integrated on-board flexibility. That means that the removal and storage of 3rd-row seats is not required. Since then, with over two million buyers in Europe, it has long become a modern classic. That’s why the established 26 27 second generation Zafira remains in production. So customers will continue to benefit from the traditional virtues of this flexible multi-purpose vehicle at an affordable price. For the 21st century driver each journey will be whisper quiet, squeaky clean and with plenty of power. Until now, the limited range of electric cars has restricted their practicality. In contrast, the revolutionary propulsion system that powers Ampera actually combines the advantages of an electric car with the range of a conventional car. Depending on driving conditions, the Ampera will cover between 40 and 80 kilometres powered solely by the energy stored in its battery. So, with only a few exceptions, it can take care of most daily mobility needs electrically. If the journey is longer there’s still no need to worry. Because then, the on-board petrol-powered generator produces its own electricity and provides a range of over 500 kilometres. This is innovation in the best tradition of Opel. Range is dependent on driving style, ambient temperature, the use of powered devices, etc. All figures quoted relate to the EU base model with standard equipment. Fuel consumption data, CO2 emission data, official electrical consumption data and official electrical range data are determined according to regulation R (EC) No. 715/2007 (in the version respectively applicable), taking into consideration the vehicle weight in running order, as specified by the regulation. Additional equipment may lead to slightly higher results than the stated consumption and CO2 figures. Additional equipment may increase the weight of the vehicle when empty, which may lead to a reduction in top speed and increased acceleration time. The published performance figures assume a 75 kg driver plus 125 kg load. 1 2 New power in the tank Pictures may show optional equipment. There are alternatives. Opel is working to protect the environment on a broad front, de ploying technologies that can contribute to a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. PROTECTS THE ENVIRONMENT AND YOUR WALLET: ECOFLEX EVEN STANDING STILL COUNTS: START/STOP SYSTEM Opel engineers have always been working to provide maximum driving fun whilst consuming as little fuel as possible. Whether it’s the engine, transmission, energy management or driver assistance systems, Opel is putting the latest fuel-saving technologies to work. Not only going easy on your wallet, but also the environment. The most fuel-efficient Opel models, with particularly low emissions, are available under the name ecoFLEX. This intelligent fuel-saving concept is based on a range of technical measures contributing to the optimization of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions – without compromising performance. So our ecoFLEX models prove that environmental awareness and driving pleasure are not mutually exclusive. Today there are 67 ecoFLEX models – from the Opel Agila through to the flagship Opel Insignia – making up almost half of the current product range. And that’s just the beginning. The Opel ecoFLEX model range is continuously expanding. The concept embraces four different fuel solutions: petrol, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas and natural gas. A wide range where you can find a car that suits your individual needs. Available across the range, the Opel Start/Stop system is of special interest to customers living in large urban areas by offering the potential for significant fuel saving. In combination with other ecoFLEX features such as the “change up” indicator, depending on the route conditions, it can bring fuel savings of over 10 % in city driving, with corresponding reductions in CO2 emissions. A compelling argument for all who are cost-conscious and care about the environment too. All Opel models with the Start/Stop system are also equipped with optimized alternators, batteries, starters and special software for monitoring and controlling the entire electrical system. THE ELECTRIC CAR FOR UNLIMITED MOBILITY: AMPERA With the Ampera, Opel declares its leadership in propulsion systems for the future. This, the first electric car totally suitable for everyday use, redefines electric driving in an innovative, economical and responsible way. The main energy source for the electric drive unit is a lithium-ion battery, capable of powering the Ampera – completely emissions-free – for between 40 and 80 kilometres. The “extended range” mode is activated when the battery charge level reaches a pre-defined minimum. Then, an economical petrol engine – the “Range Extender” – drives a generator providing current for the electric drive unit. This extends the range to more than 500 kilometres, without refuelling. 30 31 Generator Lithium-ion battery Electric drive Charging port Range Extender: Two electric drive units and a conventional engine provide Ampera with the best environmental values and maximum range. Economical and thrifty: COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS Good mixture: LPG Also known as Autogas or Liquefied Petroleum Gas – LPG can reduce fuel costs by around 40 % compared with the equivalent petrol engine. A particular advantage of Opel ecoFLEX LPG models is the bi-fuel principle, which significantly increases overall range. Depending on the model that can be over 1,300 kilometres. For frequent and long-distance drivers, the Opel ecoFLEX LPG models are an ideal combination of economical LPG operation and the unlimited use of petrol. From an environmental perspective it all makes sense: the CO2 emissions in the LPG mode is lower by up to 15 % compared to petrol mode. The new LPG offensive kicks-off with the Opel Corsa ecoFLEX LPG, available to order since the summer. The LPG variants of other Opel models will follow successively. All newly developed Opel LPG models are equipped with purpose-built, factory-fitted, optimized engines, and all are Euro 5 certified. Natural gas (CNG) is the most environmentally friendly, cost-saving alternative fuel. It costs around half the price of petrol, while CO2 emissions are approximately 25 % lower. The special environmental plus: CNG is the only fossil fuel that can also be obtained from renewable sources, thus reducing the total environmental impact of CO2 even further. And, since 2009, Opel has proved that environmental awareness and driving dynamics go together, with the powerful Zafira CNG ecoFLEX Turbo, one of the top-selling CNG compact vans in Germany. Opel is expanding its CNG offer: early next year will see the launch of the Zafira Tourer CNG. CNG, left. The tanks flank the rear axle. We love ideas Hardly any other automotive brand stands for new ideas like Opel does. Our engineers have a very clear task: their innovations must make a noticeable difference. We can demonstrate this with a few current examples: in each case, our vision provides us with the means to build cars that appeal to the customer. For men and women, for the young and the old, for families and singles. That means innovative mobility for everyone. FlexFix® bike carrier system. Ready for a bike ride through the countryside? With the FlexFix® rear carrier system it couldn’t be easier. Concealed within the rear bumper it folds out to accommodate two bikes. The loading height is low, so you save your energy for cycling. For certain models, accessories are available for the transport of 4 bikes. 32 33 comfortable premium seat. Back pains or tension during long drives? It doesn’t have to be like that. The premium seat has what it takes to keep you fit and healthy. In addition to multiple adjustable settings, there is also the possibility to fine-tune the electrically height-adjustable lumbar support. The thigh rest can also be extended in length. The seat can be ventilated in summer and heated in winter. This commendable attention to ergonomics has not gone unnoticed: the AGR – Aktion Gesunder Rücken e. V. (healthy back initiative) awarded the seat its seal of approval. The light beam from the new bi-xenon headlights ad just themselves to the speed: high beam for countryside driving, low beam for 30 km/h zones. It throws illumination through curves and twisty side roads. Severe braking instigates highfrequency flashing of the brake lights. Pictures may show optional equipment. AFL+ ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHTS. Zafira Flex7®SEATING system. As the first 7-seater in the compact van segment, Zafira has set new standards of interior space flexibility. It can be transformed from a full 7-seater into a spacious transport van without having to remove a single seat. For the new Zafira Tourer, Opel engineers have further evolved the Flex7® concept. The three individual seats in the second row can be moved independently. With the optional Lounge Seating system there are even more adjustment possibilities – even inboard/outboard. NAVI 900 europE. Intuitive operation instead of complicated instruction for use – a characteristic of Opel infotainment systems. The navigation system 900 Europe, for example, shows your position on a 7˝ display. The included SD card contains data for more than 30 European countries, as well as a comprehensive, illustrated digital travel guide. So navigation data are quickly accessed, even when an audio CD is in use. A car grows with intelligent solutions 34 35 torsion beam with Watt’s linkage. Sometimes, two existing objects must be combined to create something new. So, Opel Astra’s engineers have combined the proven torsion beam with a Watt’s linkage. The result is a noticeable increase in lateral stability and comfort for the new Opel Astra. The concept is also used for racing cars which must take corners at the very highest speeds. Heated steering wheel. Forget cold steering wheels! Even on the coldest mornings your steering wheel can be heated up to 34 degrees. Three eyes see better than two: the new front camera recognizes traffic signs with speed limits and overtaking restrictions, displaying them on the instrument panel. And there’s more: if the car unintentionally leaves the selected lane, the system triggers a warning indicator and audible signal. The idea was honoured with the Plus X Award for outstanding innovative achievement. Pictures may show optional equipment. Front Camera. FlexSpace® SEATing SYSTEM. How do you convert a 5-seater into a 4-seater, a 3-seater, or even a 2-seater? With only a couple of easy movements the seats you don’t need disappear into the floor. And they’re back as soon as you need them. Sounds like magic, but it’s all the result of clever engineering. The FlexSpace® seating system has been further optimized for the new Opel Meriva and is now even easier to use. The pièce de résistance: the outer rear seats can be moved to provide more legroom or shoulderroom – or both. Park assist. Parking in tight spaces can sometimes be an awkward situation, even for an experienced driver. The new electronic Park Assist makes every parking manoeuvre child’s play. As you move alongside a possible parking space, the system lets you know if the available space is large enough. If it is, the display clearly indicates to the driver the correct steering movements required to complete the parking manoeuvre. 36 37 FlexRide premium chassis. Are you driving enthusiastically? Cruising through the countryside? Or coping with city traffic? With FlexRide you have three chassis in one, and you choose the chassis settings. Systems such as damping control, engine response, ESP®, steering rate and four-wheel drive are linked up and determine the response of the car. If the style of driving changes during the ride, the system adjusts itself accordingly. For more driving pleasure, safety, and comfort. is able to adapt to every situation Adaptive 4x4 drive. When four wheels are simultaneously driven, the chassis electronics must decide how much torque should be provided to each driven wheel. Ideally, this takes into account the prevailing driving conditions. As is the case with the adaptive 4x4 drive: it distributes within a fraction of a second the required torque to each individual wheel. The results: the best traction and driving stability as well as a dynamic driveability. Pictures may show optional equipment. Technology that TopTec. Stains on the seat? Thanks to TopTec, that’s no longer a problem. The nanostructures of the special coating form a protective layer around every fibre, and they prevent dirt or liquids from penetrating into the fabric of the car seat. 38 39 today we are thinking about tomorrow. Mobility for the future is our goal. Our innovations help us all to get there. what do you mean by “Wir leben Autos”, mr VISSER? Board of Management member, Adam Opel AG on the self-image of the brand, the demands made on one’s own work, and the role of creativity in future models. Until recently, it was “Discover Opel”, and now the new slogan is “Wir leben Autos”. Is there nothing left to discover with Opel, Mr Visser? al ain visser (l aughs): Naturally – quite a bit, actually. But when we chose “Discover Opel” we had the impression that many people had no idea how much was going on at Opel. Then the Insignia came along, followed by the Astra, Meriva and Ampera, and suddenly we were the focus of attention. Meanwhile everyone has realized how much there is to see at Opel – all of it new and exciting. We no longer need to invite people to look at us – you’ve been doing that for ages. Now it’s “Wir leben Autos” – why this particular phrase? These three words embrace all that constitutes the core of our business. Above all, we want to express the high standards that we set ourselves. It’s not just about building and selling a product. Cars are our passion, and that affects everything we do. visser: That sounds very emotional ... “The speed was power, and the speed was joy, and the speed was pure beauty.” These words, from the writer Richard Bach, provided inspiration for the latest Opel design concept car: the GTC Paris. That’s exactly what was intended. Those who want to build cars must put their hearts into it. Opel needs more of that spirit, we want to recharge the brand with emotion. We’re looking for that “wow” effect that we achieved with the Astra GTC and Ampera at the Paris Motor Show. And our new brand ambassadors will help raise awareness of the brand. visser: 40 41 The expressive, sporty GTC Paris embodies a forward-looking interpretation of recognized Opel design cues. Al ain Visser, born in 1963, originally from Belgium, studied marketing in the USA at Duke University. He subsequently worked in England and Switzerland, in the Netherlands, and in Germany. Today he is a member of the Board of Management, in charge of all of Opel’s Sales, Marketing and Aftersales activities. A new direction. The concept car, first seen at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010, hints at the future of sporty and environmentally friendly Opels. FLEXTREME GT/E see ourselves as “ We a part of the tradition of the art of German engineering.” Alain Visser, Management Board, Adam Opel AG 42 43 Katie Melua and Lena Meyer-Landrut have attracted a lot of attention to the brand. Are you also considering sponsorship? Design is also a part of this … I don’t like the word “sponsorship”. I prefer “brand activation”. The Opel brand has many strengths, they just need to be reactivated. We’re working on various concepts, but we’re not yet ready to go public with them. I’ll say this though: we are not ruling out motorsport and other sports. Both embody dynamism and innovation, Opel’s core values. A concept car is a vehicle for imagination that looks beyond today’s standards and requirements, showing instead the future direction and development of the brand. Our engineers and designers have been working very closely together to create a palpable vision of the future of Opel. The Flextreme GT/E shows that it is possible for a car of the future to tick all the boxes: exciting design, futuristic technology, and – always important – respect for the environment. How important is technical innovation for Opel? What role does the Opel Ampera play in this? It has always been important and it will become more important still. But above all: the focus will become wider. The question will not merely be: how can we improve the technology of our cars? Instead, our engineers ask themselves: how can we improve the driving experience in our cars? visser: visser: visser: Where exactly lies the difference? Innovation means simplifying everyday life for people. Headlights that adapt to every lighting and driving situation are more important to most drivers than a bit more or a bit less horsepower. Those who often take their bikes with them know what an incredible aid our FlexFix® system is. Such innovations make Opel what it is. We understand that driving a car is about more than just steering and stepping on the pedal. It is the entire experience with the car that truly matters. visser: visser: Back in 1989, Opel made the catalytic converter a standard; we were the first auto company to implement a recycling programme for plastics. We have been successfully offering cars with CNG for some time now. The Opel Ampera is our most important step into the future. We are very proud of our ExtendedRange Electric Vehicle programme. Should the vehicle be driven beyond the range of its battery pack, the small on-board petrol engine generates electricity for the Electric Drive Unit – thus offering extended range. It is not the quest for technical gadgets, but rather for solutions that improve life – that is also a part of the claim we make, when we use the phrase “Wir leben Autos”. DESIGN OR FUNCTIONALITY? The flowing lines of the Flextreme GT/E offer little air resistance, while stirring the emotions. An ideal combination. those who wish to shape the future must understand their strengths. over a century filled with experience allowS us to open new horizons. 44 45 A TRADITION OF INNOVATION 1899 Auto construction begins in Rüsselsheim. The Opel Insignia is filled with innovations and developments that place it far beyond the boundaries of its class, setting new standards: such as a front camera, which recognizes traffic signs, adaptive 4x4 drive, and the FlexRide premium chassis, which coordinates and connects the chassis’ dynamics systems and the further developed adaptive AFL+ headlights. Its design is the clearest indication of leadership. Its lines provide the perfect balance between dynamics and elegance – whether as four-door saloon, five-door hatchback, or Sports Tourer. The Opel Insignia is a car that has the wow factor. And is simply the best in its class. With the Opel Insignia, Opel has carried the sporty design of a coupé over into the class of medium-sized saloons – and without compromising on space in the process. Through its exemplary cd value of 0.26, the car is aerodynamically super efficient, benefitting fuel efficiency, performance, and wind noise. Sculptural artistry with German precision – the philosophy of the Opel designers has for the first time been consistently implemented with the Opel Insignia and it serves as a template for all future Opels. But it’s not just the exterior of the “Car of the Year 2009” that cuts such a good figure: the ecoFLEX variants of the Opel Insignia with Start/Stop System combine dynamic driving experience with especially low emissions of 115 g CO2/km – that is equivalent to fuel consumption of 4.3 l/100 km. THE PREMIUM CARS OF THE COMPACT CLASS Whether as a classic five-door or Sports Tourer, Opel Astra adds impetus to the “sporting allrounder“ segment. It was important that we “ translate the strengths of the Insignia into the Astra class.” Uwe Müller, Designer, Opel Like the Astra GTC, the spacious Astra Sports Tourer embodies the same design philosophy as its mid-size counterpart, the Insignia Sports Tourer, and looks just as dynamic. Thanks to the efficient design of its load space with ingenious and practical features, the cargo volume is increased to a maximum 1,550 litres, and is ready for any task. Also, with its sporty and elegant appearance, high-quality workmanship and a range of fuel-efficient engines, the classic Astra five-door has quickly become the new benchmark in its class. The new Astra ecoFLEX five-door needs only 3.7 litres of diesel per 100 km and produces just 99 grams per 100 km of CO2, making it the most economical Astra ever. Each Astra is available with a large selection of ecoFLEX engines that make it possible to develop more power while delivering better environmental values. And, unique in the automobile industry, the FlexFix® integrated bicycle carrier system. More than 70 years after the first Opel Kadett, the Astra in all its body styles, has become a worthy successor in the long tradition of compact car models. Opel can claim to have always been one of the top three most successful cars in the European compact car class – a segment that makes up a good third of the total car market. 58 59 Power with style: The tenth generation of the Opel Astra has grown.
