Innovations
For more than a century, Opel has been at the forefront
of automotive design and innovation.
Here is a selection of our innovations:
1965
Opel Experimental GT is first concept car by
an European automobile manufacturer and first
concept car to go into production (in 1968).
Opel makes the automobile affordable with the
“Doctor’s Car”, sold at a price of 3,950 marks.
1976
Introduction of modular construction system
at Opel: Prefabricated car bodies can now be
combined with different engines and chassis.
Composite-glass front windscreen for all
Opel models. Opel patent: cavity in piston head
reduces noise in diesel engines.
1983
Opel Senator is the first car with ABS System.
1984
Opel Kadett GSi is the most streamlined car
in its class, at 0.30cd.
1989
Opel is first European manufacturer to offer catalytic
converters as standard on all gasoline models.
1993
Opel patent: “metal protection sheet” integrated
into seat backrests forms a rigid barrier. Opel pedal
release system introduced to reduce leg injuries in
the case of an accident.
1995
Opel Corsa Eco3 is first ready-to-drive 3-liter
per 100 km car in the world.
1999
Flex7 seating system in the Opel Zafira.
2003
Introduction of fuel saving Twinport-Technology for
gasoline engines
2005
All Diesel cars are available with maintenance-free
diesel particulate filter.
1899
First Opel Automobile patent: reverse gear in
patented motor car, Lutzmann system.
1909
1910
1924
Opel is first German manufacturer to adopt
assembly-line manufacturing methods that enable
volume production.
1928
Opel builds RAK 1 and RAK 2. RAK 2 has 24
solid fuel rockets that catapult the vehicle to an
amazing 238 km/h, setting a new world record.
1931
Opel is first manufacturer to set up a customer
service school.
1935
Opel Olympia is first German large-volume vehicle with
self-bearing whole-steel body. The new design reduces
the car’s weight and improves aerodynamics and
passive safety (rigid passenger cell with a front end that
deforms in stages on impact). Performance and fuel
efficiency both rise sharply.
8
Innovations
2007
Opel Flextreme concept car, the first application
of GM’s and Opel’s ground-breaking E-Flex electric
propulsion system, is presented.
Opel introduces low-emission ecoFlex variants
of its volume model lines.
GM/Opel engineers develop mechatronic chassis
that makes driving safer and more comfortable.
The Ampera extended-range
electric vehicle will make the
Opel brand the first European
automobile manufacturer to
provide customers several
hundred kilometers of non-stop
electric driving.
9
2008
Opel Eye is introduced in Opel/Vauxhall Insignia. The
small wide-angle, high-resolution on-board camera
reads road signs and lane markings, thus improving
driving safety.
2009
Opel Ampera is unveiled at Geneva Motor
Show. The revolutionary extended-range electric
vehicle will make Opel the first European automobile
manufacturer to provide customers several hundred
kilometers of nonstop electric driving.
Environment
Opel is committed to energy diversity
Opel leads environmentally-friendly
technology development
Opel is pursuing energy diversity on many fronts. It is clear to us
that petroleum alone cannot fuel all of the world’s rapidly growing
demand for enhanced personal mobility. We must develop alternative sources of propulsion, using a variety of energy sources.
Opel supports reducing vehicle emissions and has a clear
strategy regarding environmentally-friendly technology
development:
• Opel will continue to improve internal combustion engines
as well as manual and automatic transmissions.
• Key to its energy-diversity strategy is a variety of technical
details to improve vehicle performance and significantly
reduce CO2 emissions.
• Opel will also continue its efforts to displace petroleum
fuels with alternative fuels such as CNG/LPG.
• Opel is a leader in CNG vehicles that can also be fueled
with biogas.
• Opel will introduce pure battery-electric vehicles in
smaller-size segments
Opel has a broad commitment to producing electric-drive vehicles
that help diversify energy sources, reduce emissions and improve
fuel efficiency.
The innovative Voltec electric-drive technology, featured
in the Opel Ampera, is an important step to leadership in the
development of electrically-driven vehicles.
• With the Ampera, Opel will be the first European automobile
manufacturer to provide customers with an electrically
driven vehicle capable of being the primary vehicle in the
household.
• Ampera and the Chevrolet Volt are the first electricallydriven cars to provide zero range anxiety (from being
stranded by a depleted battery) as well as zero emissions.
• Ampera and the Chevrolet Volt will deliver 60 km (40 miles)
of emission-free electric driving, with the capability to
extend the range to more than 500 of kilometers via an
on-board generator.
• Featuring GM’s fourth-generation fuel-cell propulsion,
HydroGen4 produces an electric output of up to 93 kW and
accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in around 12 seconds.
• Project “Driveway”, the world’s largest market test of
fuel-cell vehicles:
• In November 2008, 10 HydroGen4 vehicles were added to
the test fleet of the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) in
Berlin, Germany – a program supported by GM/Opel, fuel
companies, utilities, other automakers and the German
government. CEP provides customers with hydrogenpowered vehicles and fueling stations for day-to-day
testing. The project will run through 2016.
• Nine large corporations – ADAC, Allianz, Axel Springer AG,
Coca-Cola, Hilton, Linde, Schindler, Total, and Veolia – are
the first business partners to test the HydroGen4 in Berlin, in
day-to-day operation.
10
Opel environmental initiatives in Europe
Opel/Vauxhall offers a wide range of low CO2 g/km ecoFlex
variants in each model line. Opel/Vauxhall ecoFLEX models
combine the best of both worlds: they offer low emissions and
fuel consumption without compromising on performance or
driving dynamics.
Heart of the Insignia ecoFLEX model is the 4-cylinder 2.0 CDTI
engine with two versions: 118 kW/160 hp or 95 kW/130 hp. Both
consume only 5.2 liters of diesel per 100 km – equivalent to
136 g/km of CO2 emissions – yet they deliver generous torque
values ranging from 320 up to 380 Nm. That is thanks to
a powerful, new-generation 2-liter common-rail turbo diesel
engine refined specifically for the ecoFLEX range
In 2009 Opel expanded its initiative to promote regenerative
electricity production by building a solar energy power plant on
the roofs of its Rüsselsheim and Kaiserslautern manufacturing
facilities.
Some examples:
The new Opel Corsa ecoFLEX is more respectful of the
environment and more fun to drive than ever. It is powered by
a sophisticated, 70 kW/95 hp 1.3 CDTI diesel engine boosted
by a turbo with variable geometry. It is packed with 28 percent
more power than the previous generation Corsa ecoFLEX even
though fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are slashed by
some 10 percent to 98 g/km CO2.
The Astra’s line-up of powertrains with manual transmission
provides impressive performance and overall cuts CO2 emissions
by more than 12 percent compared with the current generation.
The average fuel consumption of the diesel engines is 4.6 l/100 km
and only 6.1 l/100 km for the gasoline line-up. Ecological star of
the Opel Astra model line is the 95 hp Astra 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX
which boasts an average fuel consumption of only 4.2 liters per
100 kilometers and just 109 g/km CO2 emissions.
