2015 Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce Community Guide and Business Directory
Welcome to Greencastle
From the President of the
Greater Greencastle
Chamber of Commerce
From the Mayor of Greencastle
Why
do
people
make
Greencastle home? Some will say
it is the affordable housing and the
safe environment. Others made
the choice because of their job or
an educational opportunity. Some
based their decision on location.
Still others were looking for a sense
of community and opportunities. If
you are interested in these things,
we think Greencastle has a lot to
show you and much more to offer.
Welcome to Greencastle and Putnam
County, Indiana!
As natives of Putnam County, my
husband and I have been fortunate to live,
work and raise our children in such a diverse
and culturally rich environment. Greencastle
can boast about the many family farms
that surround the city, Depauw University
– with all the amenities it has to offer,
Ivy Tech Community College, growth in our
industries and locally-owned businesses plus
much, much more!
This city was founded early
in the 1800’s. It’s surrounded by
rich farm land and boasts a mix of
diverse industries and commercial
businesses. Greencastle is home
to DePauw University, a nationally
recognized liberal arts institution
and Ivy Tech Community College. We are 35 minutes from the
mid-field terminal at Indianapolis International Airport (We also
have our own airport.) and we are an hour’s drive from the
downtowns of Indianapolis, Bloomington, Lafayette and Terre
Haute. We have miles of pathways and trails, a 520 acre nature
park and an ever expanding parks and recreation program.
In 2014, we saw many of the changes come to fruition from
the monies the city received from the 1st Stellar Community Grant
from the State of Indiana. This money has been used to revitalize our
downtown and what a wonderful transformation it has been! I have
seen these beautiful changes to the downtown square firsthand from
my office window, and there are still more improvements to come in
2015!
Greencastle has the Putnam County Playhouse, Putnam County
Museum and the Putnam County Public Library that has recently
revitalized its children’s area. It will now be called Imagination Portal,
complete with a 1,000-pound poplar tree for patrons to climb inside
and sit beneath to read! We also have a great County Fair and Fair
Parade each year in July. In the summer, on Saturday mornings,
there is a Farmer’s Market held on the downtown square with lots
of locally grown produce. There are also many festivals held in the
small towns spread throughout Putnam County. In Greencastle, one
of my favorite festival events is called First Friday. This event is held
on the 1st Friday of the month, during warmer months, and features
live entertainment, art exhibits and local business specials.
In 2011 Greencastle was selected to receive the first Stellar
Community grant from the state of Indiana. $19 million was
awarded to the city to help us create “the next great college
town”. In partnership with DePauw University we have been
rebuilding our historic downtown and the neighborhoods and
streets that link the university to the city center.
We are a community that offers those who are interested,
the opportunity to explore and to become a part of this unique
city. A strong coalition of citizens has helped move the city’s
sustainability efforts forward (Greencastle has been named the
Indiana Association of Cities and Towns Green Community of the
Year in 2008 – 2012 and 2014). With the help and determination
of our Civic League, a new splash park opened at the city
municipal pool in August. We listen to beautiful music year
round. We work together to watch the renaissance of our Main
Street organization and Arts’ Council. We gather for the Farmers’
Market on Saturday mornings and First Friday celebrations in our
downtown.
For those who enjoy outdoor activities and sports, Greencastle
has abundant recreational attractions. People Pathways is a network
of multi-use trails that promote walking and biking. We have three
local parks, Robe-Ann – which recently opened a new Splash Park
for kids, Big Walnut Sports Park and Jaycee Park. We also have the
DePauw Nature Park which covers 520 acres and has nearly 10 miles
of trails.
While you are here be sure to visit the Greater Greencastle
Chamber of Commerce Office. Keep in mind that the Chamber is here
to help you. The Chamber recently celebrated 60 years of serving
Greencastle and Putnam County. There are many great events hosted
by the Chamber each year including Taste of Putnam County and Trick
or Treat on the Square. The Chamber also has a great “Buy Local”
campaign. This initiative encourages residents to spend their money
locally by offering Chamber of Commerce Gift Certificates that can
be redeemed at nearly 100 locations. These Gift Certificates support
our local businesses and are a great gift for any occasion! To learn
more please visit www.gogreencastle.com.
Our streets are safe. We are engaged and informed and
we care what happens to our neighbors. These are important
considerations when people are looking for a place to call home.
Enjoy your time with us. You might just decide to stay.
To learn more about Greencastle, please visit us on
Facebook or on our website at www.cityofgreencastle.com.
Welcome to Greencastle.
Please enjoy your stay. It won’t take long to see that this is a
welcoming and friendly community. It is a community that I am proud
to call home.

Mayor
Sincerely,
Beth Flint

Greencastle - Who We Are
Greencastle & Putnam County
Community
There’s a quality of life that hasn’t been forgotten here.
You find it in the ready smiles of Greencastle and Putnam
County residents, local business people and college students
alike. They’re eager to share their pride in this energetic and
historic community, a city which retains its down home Hoosier
hospitality.
The surrounding communities of Bainbridge, Cloverdale,
Fillmore, Heritage Lake, Reelsville, Roachdale, and Russellville
all located in Putnam County, help make up the ‘Greater’
Greencastle Community.
A real sense of partnership and community spirit is evident
throughout the County. It is only one of many reasons why
Greencastle was awarded the designation of ALL-AMERICA CITY
in 1991. And as the county seat, Greencastle is the center of
the Putnam County Family which is dedicated to fostering a safe
haven for family, hometown values, and concern for all who live
and work here.
Just 40 minutes west of the Indianapolis downtown business
district, and only 40 minutes from Terre Haute, the Indianapolis
westside industrial complex and Indianapolis International
Airport, Greencastle is centrally located in the heart of Indiana.
Within minutes of major interstates, Greencastle is only 50
minutes from Lafayette and Bloomington, 3-1/2 hours from
Chicago and St. Louis, 2-1/2 hours to Cincinnati and Louisville.
Numerous state parks, recreation areas and lakes are within an
easy 20-60 minute drive of the city.
throughways. Toll roads with their gates and tollhouses were
common. Even more important for the county’s economic growth
was the railroad. Villages that missed the railroad (Groveland
and Brick Chapel) barely survived, while those that could
prosper from new transport, could and did develop - Cloverdale,
Bainbridge, Fillmore, Reelsville and Russellville. The Terre
Haute, Indianapolis and Eastern interurban from 1907 to 1940,
several national bus routes, a small airport in Greencastle after
1941, and Interstate 70 in the 1960’s all added to the growing
transportation activities of the county in its second century.
Early industry in Putnam County depended on local raw
materials. Grist and carding mills, saw and planing mills,
tanneries, pork packing plants and brickyards were first to be
built. After the railroads were completed, Putnam’s manufacturing
diversified to such industries as iron nails, pump and shovel
handles, carriages, furniture and pottery. The twentieth century
has seen Putnam County develop a truly mixed economic base
which has allowed it to meet the adversities of recession and
war with only minor upsets. Although of major importance,
agriculture changed with mechanization as few families farmed
for their total income.
Greencastle
Today & Tomorrow
Greencastle offers a friendly welcome along with
opportunities for people who want to create a modern heritage.
We welcome new residents and you’ll soon agree you couldn’t
choose a friendlier place to visit or live.
Keeping the best of the past and planning for future growth
are two hallmarks which guide Greencastle’s residents and
leaders. The strength of the community lies with its residents,
both old and new, who add to the charm and warmth that
characterize the Greencastle/Putnam County Community as a
safe and wholesome place to raise a family, to have a career or
own a business, and to live the rest of your life in retirement.
Putnam County
Putnam County was created by an act of the General
Assembly in December of 1821. The county was named after
one of two Revolutionary War Generals named Putnam (thought
to be Israel Putnam), but the legislature did not specifically
indicate which one. Connecting the forest settlements, which
were far from a truly navigable river in pioneer days, to the state
and national economy required something more than trails. The first major breakthrough came when the National Road
(approximately today’s U.S. 40) was built through central Indiana
between 1827 and 1834 linking Putnam County with Indianapolis
to the east and Vandalia, Illinois, to the west. Along this road
moved not only the wagon trains, the stage coaches, the mail,
and the prominent travelers, but also trade goods in and out of
Putnam County. New towns on the road such as Putnamville,
Reelsville, Pleasant Gardens and Manhattan even rivaled the
county seat for a time. Before the Civil War, other county
roads (present U.S. 231 and 36, for example) were only rough

Walking Tour
of Downtown Greencastle
This brief, yet charming, walking tour will guide you through
some of the most distinctive areas of the city, reflecting more
than 150 years of American architecture. Several buildings in
the downtown area are listed in the National Register of Historic
Places. Did you know that Eli Lilly had his first pharmacy on the
southeast corner of the city square? Or, that John Dillinger
made off with the biggest heist of his career when he robbed
the Central National Bank located then on the southwest corner
of the Greencastle square. Be sure to notice the Old Opera
House on the west side of the historic courthouse and the Buzz
Bomb located on the courthouse lawn.
The architecture of the city is an eclectic mix of styles.
You’ll note Victorian Gothic styling in East College (1), Pioneer
technique at the Old Bethel Log Church (2), Italianate design
in the McGaughey house (3), as well as in the Frank P. Nelson
home (4), and Colonial Revival in the Elms (5). Also of interest

Greencastle
Washington and Indiana, Eli Lilly operated his first drug store
just prior to the Civil War. At 6 West Washington, Lincoln’s
law partner, William L. Herndon, together with Jessie W. Weik,
compiled Herndon’s Life of Lincoln. In the decades after the fire,
large two and three story brick and stone buildings were built
east and south of the public square with municipal offices - a fire
station, city hall, a post office and a public library east and west
along Walnut Street.
From its beginning, small stores, shops, and mills were
located around the courthouse square. In time annexations
were necessary and have continued in all directions, particularly
south and east. The Vandalia Railroad depot in the south end
of town brought with it business and industrial development. A
second railroad, the north-south Monon, was completed through
Greencastle in 1854 with a depot on the north side of town. A horse-drawn street railway system extended between the
depots for many years in the late 19th century. A major event
occurred in 1837 when the Methodist Church in Indiana selected
Greencastle to be the site of its new college. Indiana Asbury
began both as a college preparatory school and as a four-year
residential college. It has grown steadily; its name changing to
DePauw University in 1884.
Founded only sixteen years after Putnam County and
fourteen years after the town of Greencastle, Indiana Asbury/
DePauw University is the one institution that has remained
constant throughout the county’s history. Chartered in 1837
by the Indiana General Assembly, Indiana Asbury was a college
preparatory school and four-year liberal arts college. The
University, while under the auspices of the Methodist Church,
had, for the most part, local business and professional men
as original trustees. A small school in the beginning, with only
three in its first graduating class, Asbury College offered a
curriculum similar to other colleges of its period - Latin, Greek,
and mathematics. Its program later widened to include natural
and social sciences as well as the humanities and languages. Women were admitted in 1867. From 1845 fraternities and,
later, sororities flourished. In 1884 Washington C. DePauw, a
prominent glass manufacturer from New Albany, a Methodist
and member of the Board of Trustees, rescued the University
which was in the midst of financial difficulties. The school’s
name was then changed to honor DePauw. While grandiose
plans for expansion had to be abandoned, the number of
buildings increased, the curriculum widened, the enrollment and
endowment rose and the University developed a state, national
and international reputation.
Greencastle became the county seat after early settler
Ephraim Dukes and his wife, and later his daughter and sonin-law, deeded part of their land to induce the government to
Greencastle. Tradition states that Dukes who had originally come
from Greencastle, Pennsylvania, named the town. Beginning as a
pioneer village, but with the advantage of business opportunities
associated with seats of government, Greencastle’s population
grew to 2,589 by 1850, one year after its incorporation as a city.
Greencastle’s
Courthouse Square
Historic District
The Courthouse Square and the immediate surrounding
blocks has always been the political and commercial hub of both
Greencastle and Putnam County. The earliest courts were held
in log homes and the Methodist Church. The first courthouse, a
frame structure with a cupola erected in 1827-28, was replaced
in 1832 by a one-story brick, hip roofed building. The third
courthouse, constructed in 1848, was a two story brick Green
Revival building designed by Elisha Braman, a Greencastle
resident and architect for many Greencastle homes. The present
courthouse, built in 1905, is a four-story building of Bedford
limestone. In the early days the stores and buildings on the
square were log and frame, later replaced by brick and stone. The north side of the square claims the oldest structures in the
district; many of them pre-Civil War, although all are hidden by
more recent facades. This side escaped the disastrous fires of
1874 and 1875, which destroyed the east and south sides. Noteworthy on the west side of the square is an 850
seat Opera House, which was built in 1875 and has been the
scene of memorable entertainment. At the southwest corner of
DePauw University
The DePauw campus, with the exception of a few months
in 1837 when it occupied a one-story schoolhouse on West
Washington Street, has remained at its present site. Beginning
in a small two story seminary building on the southeast corner
of Seminary and College Streets, it developed for most of the
nineteenth century in the area bounded by Indiana Street on
the west, Seminary Street on the north, Locust Street on the
east, and Hanna Street on the south. Here were built the major
buildings. Only the newly restored East College, built in 1871,
remains. This structure, along with the McKim Observatory, is
listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

DePauw University
Nationally recognized as one of America’s top liberal arts
colleges, DePauw University is proud of the strong bonds
between the campus and community it calls home as it enters
its 178th year.
In the early 1830’s, convinced that having a college located in
their city would enhance their community’s future prospects, the
citizens of Greencastle raised $25,000 (the equivalent today of
$1,000 per citizen) to convince the Methodist Church to locate
a university within the city limits. Indiana Asbury was founded in
1837. Known since 1884 as DePauw, the University is a private,
selective, coeducational, residential, undergraduate College of
Liberal Arts with a School of Music which is the sixth-oldest in
the nation.
The University’s 2,220 students come from 46 states and 36
foreign countries. A full-time faculty of 225 ensures class sizes
which average fewer than 18 students, engendering a rigorous
academic environment that encourages participation, expression
and individual attention to students’ needs.
The campus includes 36 buildings on 695 acres, including a
520-acre nature park, providing state-of-the-art facilities for
learning and campus life. Recent enhancements to the campus
include a major renovation and expansion of the Performing
Arts Center; now known as the Judson and Joyce Green Center
for the Performing Arts. The gift of another DePauw alumnus
has made possible the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics. That
building became the first building in Indiana to earn a LEED
New Construction Gold 2.2 rating for energy efficiency and
environmental design from the U.S. Green Building Council. The
same designation was given to the Bartlett Reflection Center,
which is also located within the Nature Park.
President Brian W. Casey has led a campus planning process
that seeks to better connect the campus community and its
neighbors. His work with Greencastle Mayor Sue Murray led
to the city receiving one of two inaugural Stellar Communities
grants from the state. As much as $19 million is supporting
core projects designed to enhance the economic, cultural and
residential vitality of Greencastle’s downtown and the “South
Court” neighborhood between the courthouse square and the
university. The new Starbucks/Eli’s Books on the courthouse
square, and the beautification of Anderson Street (creating a
breathtaking new gateway to the DePauw campus) are visible
dividends of the grant’s receipt.
DePauw’s 35,000 alumni include Boston Celtics basketball
coach Brad Stevens; authors Barbara Kingsolver, Richard Peck,
John Jakes and James B. Stewart; America’s 44th Vice President,
Dan Quayle; civil rights l.eader and presidential adviser Vernon
Jordan; retired U.S. Congressman Lee Hamilton, who co-chaired
the Iraq Study Group and 9/11 Commission; Angie Hicks,
co-founder of Angie’s List; and Fox News anchor Bret Baier.
The National Survey of Student Engagement puts DePauw
within the top 10% of colleges in the nation for the challenges
it provides its students and for seniors who report their
educational experiences have been enriching. The report also
finds that DePauw seniors score significantly higher than both
peer institutions and all schools in the categories “Active and
Collaborative Learning” and for “Student-Faculty Interaction”
reported by seniors.
DePauw is annually listed among the “Top Producers of
Fulbright Awards for U.S. Students” in the Chronicle of Higher
Education. It’s also among “forty overlooked gems” in the book,
Acceptance: A Legendary Guidance Counselor Helps Seven Kids
Find the Right Colleges -- And Find Themselves. DePauw is the
only institution of higher education in Indiana on the list.
Uncommon success begins at DePauw University.

DEPAUW & PUTNAM COUNTY
Economic Impact
DePauw University provides more than $176 million in benefits to
Central Indiana on an annual basis and its activities create jobs
that employ 2,335 people, according to an independent economic
impact study. The Louisville, Kentucky-based EconImpact
performed a comprehensive review of the University over the
2003-04 academic year. The findings show that one dollar of
every $10 in business spending in Greencastle is generated by
DePauw; the ratio is 1 to 12 for all of Putnam County. DePauw
also worked to create the Putnam County Economic Development
Partnership Fund.
Improving the Community
The University raised the largest share ($88,000) of non-taxpayer
funds used to purchase a new state-of-the-art pumper for the
fire department, and contributed $10,000 toward a new Fire
Safety Smoke House. DePauw also donated a building to the
Family Youth and Community Development Program that is now
a community center for the South End neighborhood, and is an
annual contributor to United Way of Putnam County and Relay
For Life.
“Regardless of whether they are local residents, DePauw
employees, or both, people are proud of this community and the
University, which they view as one of the region and the state’s
greatest assets,” DePauw’s new president, Brian W. Casey,
stated in an op-ed published in Greencastle’s Banner Graphic.
He noted that “we must examine ways to build upon the bonds
we share and sometimes overlook. Please know that I am
committed to making the relationship between DePauw and its
Putnam County neighbors stronger.”

The Putnam County Public Library, located at 103 E. Poplar
Street, Greencastle, serves 12 of the 13 townships in Putnam
County and provides outreach services through its Bookmobile.
The Poplar Street location currently has ten internet stations in
the upstairs Reference/Adult area, two stand-alone stations for
quick use, and two stations in the Children’s Room reserved
for use by children and their parents. Both the library and the
Bookmobile are equipped with wireless internet capability.
The PCPL offers use of its two meeting rooms with overhead
projector, VCR, video projector, and high resolution TV. Located in
the lower level of the building, the rooms are available for public
use. Both rooms are free to use for non-profit organizations.
There is a small fee for businesses and individual social events.
A variety of programs and events are hosted throughout the
year for all citizens—babies through adults. In addition to on-going
programs like story times and book sales the library hosts an
annual author series, now in its eight year.
Patron services include access to reference assistance,
magazines, newspapers, music on CDs, computer software,
assistance with genealogy and local history research, copy
machines, fax machine, and, of course, books! The library not
only stocks popular books, along with the classics, it carries titles
in CD, MP3, Play Away, and e-book formats. Many workers who
commute, people with vision problems, or families heading out
on vacation will find this a very convenient way to keep up with
their reading. If patrons cannot find what they are looking for,
interlibrary loans are provided.
In 2011 Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library arrived in Putnam
County when the library received a start-up grant from the Putnam
County Community Foundation. Partnering with Family Support
Services and Putnam Count Headstart, the program currently
has over 500 children under the age of 5 years participating and
receiving a new book each month. The Friends of the Library have
committed to sign-up children, manage the database and raise
funds to continue Imagination Library.
On-line databases are a valuable resource for researching a
paper, a business, a product, genealogy, or vacation planning. The
PCPL subscribes to Ancestry On-Line, Heritage Quest, NoveList,
INSPIRE, Tumble Book Library, Learn a Language and BookLetters.
Of particular importance to businesses and entrepreneurs is
ReferenceUSA. All databases, with the exception of Ancestry
On-line and Heritage Quest, are available to card holders through
remote access from the library’s website, www.putnam.lib.in.us.
In December of 2011, PCPL began offering e-books. Patrons
can search for titles within the library catalog as well as
through a separate interface on the library’s website. Titles
are downloadable to i-devices, computers/laptops and Android
devices with Nook, Kobo, and Kindle-compatibility coming in the
winter of 2012. A free software program called Blio is required,
but is easily downloaded from the library’s website.
Patron services available through the website include access
to the library catalog, placement of holds on materials for pickup at the library or bookmobile, access to one’s own patron
record and renewal of library materials. Information about library

Putnam County Hospital
Expanding and evolving to give the community the best in healthcare, close to home
Putnam County Hospital has
is proud to be the community’s
healthy par tner for over 90
years. Over this vast timeline,
the hospital, as well as our
friends of the community, have
experienced many changes in
healthcare; none more so than
in recent years.Putnam County
Hospital is proud to be your
rural hospital, providing stateof-the-art services with personal
care. At Putnam County
Hospital, patient satisfaction is
top priority. With this goal in
mind, the hospital is excited to
be continually expanding and evolving their services, to better
serve the community.
In July of 2014, Putnam County Hospital partnered with
Hendricks Regional Health to bring prenatal services back to
Putnam County. The program, Partners In Care, is targeted toward
under insured moms-to-be. Hendricks Regional Health provides a
visiting nurse practitioner who sees expectant mothers up to
delivery. Patients of Partners in Care receive prenatal services at
Putnam County Hospital, while deliveries take place at Hendricks
Regional Health in Danville.
DePauw University conducted a needs assessment and
confirmed a shortage of prenatal care in Putnam County.
By partnering on this venture, Putnam County Hospital and
Hendricks Regional Health hope to improve the health of women
and babies in the community.
2014 also brought many advances in the Radiology/Imaging
services at Putnam County Hospital. The hospital is proud to
now utilize the GE Healthcare’s Optima* CT660, an advanced,
scalable Computed Tomography (CT) system offering lower
radiation dose capabilities and enhanced ease-of-use in a range
of cardiovascular, oncology, neurology, angiography and other
procedures. This imaging system will enable our physicians to
acquire high quality images to help better diagnose patients,
while significantly reducing radiation exposure.
“The benefits of using CT scanning to detect illness and
injuries are enormous, yet healthcare providers must be attuned
to the amount of radiation that patients receive over their
lifetime,” states Paul Sanders, RT (R) (CT), Radiology Services
Manager at Putnam County Hospital. “This innovative upgrade
gives our radiologists low-dose exceptional quality images
which enables them to make accurate diagnoses while reducing
radiation exposure up to 40 percent.”
The Optima CT660 has
also increased the scope
of exams that can now
be performed at Putnam
County Hospital, including
cardiac scoring and lung
cancer screens.
Along with expanding
ser vices
and
new
technological advances in treatments, Putnam County Hospital
now offers patients a patient portal to view their hospital
medical records online. Having this electronic access through a
personal, secured email will allow the patient the ability to review
their medical record after their stay at Putnam County Hospital.
This access provides information, including but not limited to,
medical procedures completed, medical history, medications
taken, allergies, existing or developing medical conditions, etc.
The patient can also download their confidential medical record
to a private computer for their personal records, as well as
electronically share records with another medical professional
of choice. Registering to access medical records electronically
will also give the user the option to pay their Putnam County
Hospital bill online. Putnam County Hospital is excited to offer
these convenient services to our patients and is here to help our
patients through every step of the process.
Putnam County Hospital has been serving its community
with premium quality healthcare since 1924. Accredited by
the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program and licensed
by the Indiana State Board of Health, Putnam County Hospital
continuously strives to provide exceptional healthcare for our
community. Every patient. Every time. For more information on
Putnam County Hospital’s services, call 765.655.5121 or go to

Covered Bridges - Historic Jewels
To explore the Covered Bridges of Putnam County simply follow the conveniently placed brown
and white Covered Bridge signs along the county roads. Putnam County is home
to the youngest and shortest Covered Bridge in the State of Indiana.
1. Cornstalk Bridge
Built in 1917 by builder J.A. Britton, it is a single-span
bridge, 82’ long, plus an 8’ overhang at each end. It
measures 16’ wide and 14’ high with a shingle roof and
concrete abutments. The bridge gets its name from the
creek it crosses, Cornstalk Creek, a tributary of Big Raccoon
Creek.
2. Pine Bluff Bridge
Built in 1886 by J.A. Britton. This Howe Truss bridge has cut
stone abutments and piles and is 16’ wide and 13’ 6” high
with a sheet metal roof. It crosses Big Walnut Creek.
3. Rolling Stone Bridge
Built in 1915 by J.A. Britton. This Burr Arch bridge crosses
Big Walnut and is 103’ long, plus a 10’ overhang at each
end. This single-span bridge is 16’ wide and 13’ high with
concrete abutments and a sheet metal roof. The bridge got
its name from a large boulder in the Creek which was rolled
around by the action of the water. For the protection of the
bridge, this boulder has been removed.
4. Baker’s Camp Bridge
Also know as Hillis Bridge, it was built in 1901 by J.J.
Daniels and is of the Burr Arch type. This single-span bridge
over Big Walnut Creek is 128’ long, plus a 10’ overhang at
each end. This bridge is only 14’ wide and 13’ high with cut
stone abutments and a sheet metal roof.
5. Edna Collings Bridge
The baby of all Indiana bridges was built in 1922 by Charles
Collins. The haunted, Burr Arch bridge is over Little Walnut
Creek and is 80’ long, plus an 8’ overhang at each end. It
has concrete abutments and a shingle roof and is 15’ wide
and 13’ 6” high.
6. Dunbar Bridge
Built in 1880 by the local farmers of the area using timber
which was cut on the Dunbar farm. This Burr Arch, 2-span
bridge is 174’ long, plus a 12’ overhang at each end. It
is 16’ wide and 13’ 6” high with cut stone abutments
and piles and a shingle roof. At one time the name of J.J.
Daniels was on the timbers in the bridge, so it is possible
that he had a hand in the building of this bridge.
7. Oakalla Bridge
Built in 1898 by J.J. Daniels, it’s 152’ long, plus a 15’
overhang at each end. This single-span, Burr Arch bridge
with cut stone abutments and a sheet metal roof is 16’ wide
and 14’ high. The name of the bridge is derived from the
former Oakalla Station on the old Big Four Railroad.
8. Houck Bridge
This Howe Truss bridge was built in 1880 by the Massillon
Bridge Company. This 2-span bridge is 210’ long, plus a
3’ overhang at each end. The bridge is 16’ wide and 15’
high with cut stone abutment and piles with a shingle roof.
The bridge got its name from the owner of the surrounding
land. This bridge has also been referred to as the Hamrick
Bridge, deriving this name from the proposed relocation of
the Pennsylvania Railroad and Hamrick Station.
9. Dick Huffman Bridge
This bridge is our longest bridge being 265’ long, plus a
4’ overhang at each end. This Howe Truss bridge was built
in 1880 by an unknown builder. The 2-span bridge has cut
stone abutments and piles with a sheet metal roof and is
16’ wide and 15’ high. This bridge was known in earlier days
as the Wekty Bridge named for the old Wekty Mill nearby.

Greencastle Hosts a Wide Range of Cultural and Recreational Events
In May during National Heritage Preservation Week, Main
Street Greencastle holds the Fair On The Square, which is a
celebration of the county’s history and includes a variety of
educational and nostalgic activities, as well as live entertainment
throughout the weekend. The Fair features above all Putnam
County people, past and present, who have cooperated over the
years to create a friendly place to live.
On the first weekend after Labor Day, the local Kiwanis group
and the Putnam County Convention & Visitor Bureau co-sponsor
the Annual Classic Car Show at Robe-Ann Park. Over 100 cars
can enter to win cash prizes in over 60 different categories. The
day is also filled with food, music and door prizes for everyone
who attends. All proceeds from this fun day-long event go to
benefit Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
Main Street also sponsors festivities for back-to-school time,
Halloween, and the midwinter holidays, including a Santa Parade.
Putnam County is in the heart of Covered Bridge Country
and is home to nine covered bridges, including Indiana’s “baby
bridge,” the Edna Collins Bridge. A self-guided driving tour of the
bridges is now available through the hard work of the Putnam
County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Late in July, the Putnam county 4-H Fair is in annual weeklong festival of shows, exhibits and family activities. And every
summer, residents step out of their traditional roles to walk the
stage of the Putnam County Playhouse, which recently celebrated
its 40th Anniversary.
For the sports enthusiast, Putnam County offers a wide
range of options from three lakes and three uncrowded golf
courses to a saddle club. Robe-Ann Park offers a scenic facility
for picnicking, softball, tennis, outdoor concerts, an Olympic size
pool and water slide, and features a new wooden playground and
concrete skate park. Jaycees Park has a picnic area adjacent to
one of the local lakes. Located in Putnamville, is Lincoln Park
Speedway, where every Saturday night from spring through fall,
race cars of different types, sizes and speeds, battle it out.
Those who prefer cheering to competing will find DePauw a
constant source of collegiate sports. For basketball enthusiasts,
the Indiana University Hoosiers and the Purdue Boiler-makers are
only an hour away.

PEOPLE PATHWAYS
The People Pathways effort in Greencastle, Putnam County
was started in the fall of 1995. The mission was established
to enhance the quality of life of our community by developing a
network of multi-use trails to promote community connections,
interaction, good health, safety, and non-motorized transportation.
People Pathways is a not-for-profit group that functions under the
umbrella organizations of the Friends of the Park Association of
Putnam County and National Road Heritage Trail, Inc.
phases of the People Pathways network and the Area 30 Career
Center. Gratefully, a portion of the Campus Link Trail will be
constructed by a private developer during the building of a
new apartment complex south of Veterans’ Memorial Highway.
Partnership commitments generated the funds for Phase IV: the
Coleman Foundation, DePauw University, Heartland Automotive,
the City of Greencastle, Stellar Grant, and an Indiana Department
of Transportation Enhancement Grant.
Through a partnership of public and private entities, People
Pathways has made steady progress. After soliciting community
input through a series of presentations and public meetings,
the preliminary People Pathways System was unanimously
approved by the Greencastle Park Board, Greencastle Plan
Commission, the Greencastle City Council, and the Putnam
County Commissioners. The People Pathways Plan is an officially
adopted part of the Greencastle Comprehensive Plan and the
Putnam County Comprehensive Plan.
• Signed Pathways help promote Greencastle, Putnam
County as a pedestrian/bicycle friendly community as streets and
county roads become signed for the developing People Pathways
System. Logo route markers and “share-the-road” informational
signs are being installed as our community trail network grows.
To date through a collaborative effort with the City of
Greencastle, business and corporate partners, Putnam County
officials, and Pathway volunteers, five phases of the master plan
have been pursued with 12 miles open and 4 additional miles
pending:
• Phase I, the Greencastle/Fillmore Trail, connects the
City of Greencastle to the Town of Fillmore with a 3.1-mile
packed aggregate trail that was totally funded and constructed
by community volunteers on an unused railroad right-of-way and
sewer line easement. The trail was opened in May 1999.
• Phase II, the Big Walnut Sports Park Link, is a 1.75-mile
separately paved trail connecting residential neighborhoods with
Big Walnut Sports Park and the community’s industrial park.
Grants from the Lilly Endowment through the Putnam County
Community Foundation, CINergy/PSI, Indiana Gas, and Wal-Mart
supported this phase. This phase opened in May 2002.
• Phase III, the Albin Pond Trail, is a 2-mile separately
paved urban trail that connects to four local schools, a nature
center, ties to Phase I and II, and ties to City funded sidewalk
improvements. Funding for Phase III was generated through
combined sources: Putnam County Community Foundation,
the City of Greencastle, Indiana Department of Transportation
Enhancement Grant awarded in 2001, and a Safe Routes to
School Grant. This phase opened in October 2010.
• Phase V, the Big Walnut Sports Park Loop Trail, is a
10-foot wide 1.25-mile paved trail around the perimeter of Big
Walnut Sports Park. Funds for construction were generated
through the partnership of the Indiana Department of Natural
Resources Recreational Trails Grants Program, the Greencastle
Redevelopment Commission, the Big Walnut Sports Park Board,
the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department, and the
People Pathways Planning Committee. The Big Walnut Sports
Park Loop Trail was opened in March 2005.
• Bike Project 3.0 offers an opportunity for local citizens
and guests to enjoy a FREE bike ride around our community! Bike
Project 3.0 is a collaborative effort between DePauw University’s
Sustainability Office and People Pathways to make bicycles
available “free of charge”. The bicycles are housed at the Inn
at DePauw and are accessible by showing proof of identification
and financial responsibility. Bike Project 3.0 moves us another step closer to becoming a bicycle/pedestrian friendly community!
During the past year, People Pathways continued promoting
community connections. The major accomplishment of 2013
was the completion of the People Pathways’ Fillmore “Key
Link” Trail! This 1.50-mile segment fills in the gap between the
Greencastle/Fillmore Trail and the previously completed 2.50
mile trail segment in eastern Putnam County. The connection
with neighboring Hendricks County’s trail between Coatesville
and Amo creates the 12-mile multi-use Vandalia Trail, the longest
open section of the developing cross-state 150-mile National
Road Heritage Trail initiative (please note attached map)!
Construction of the People Pathways’ Fillmore “Key Link”
segment was made possible through: Grants from Putnam
County Community Foundation, Duke Energy Foundation,
Walmart Foundation, and Rotary; Donations of materials from
Pike Lumber Company and Headley Hardware; and Contributions
of in-kind services from Putnamville Correctional Facility and the
time and talent of Volunteers.
For more information and/or maps, please see the City
of Greencastle’s Website (cityofgreencastle.com), National
Road Heritage Trail Website (www.nrht.org/vandalia), or
contact the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department at
(765-653-3395), People Pathways at (765-653-6178), the
Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau at (765-6538743), or the Chamber office.
See a map of People Pathways routes on Page 52.
• Phase IV, the future Campus Link Trail, involves the
construction of a dedicated 3.95-mile paved multi-use trail. The
Campus Link Trail will provide significant community access from
Greencastle’s central business district to DePauw University’s
intramural athletic fields, DePauw’s Nature Preserve/Arboretum,
the proposed Veteran’s Memorial Park, Campuses of Greencastle
School Corporation, Rokicki Park and the new Ivy Tech Community
College satellite campus, bordering Greencastle Industrial Park
sites of Heartland Automotive and Walmart Transportation/
Distribution Centers, and finally linking directly to two existing

Nature
Park
Established 2004
Greencastle, Indiana Founded 1837
Located less than one mile west of downtown
Greencastle, the DePauw Nature Park covers more than
500 acres of beautiful forest, fields, and abandoned
quarry. The Nature Park was once the site of an active
limestone quarry from 1917 to 1977. This limestone rock
began forming 350 million years ago from the remains of
animals living on the bottom of a shallow sea that covered
Indiana. Thanks to a generous land donation from Hanson
Aggregates, DePauw acquired the park in 2003, and has
since developed nearly 10 miles of trails for walking,
running, hiking, and biking. The park includes a section
of Big Walnut Creek, a large pond, wetlands, and a unique
quarry bottom habitat.
◆The Nature Park is free and open to all visitors every
day of the year from sunrise to sunset.
◆
Trail guides and brochures can be picked up at the
Welcome Center at the Nature Park.
◆The Welcome Center has a viewing platform, outdoor
picnic tables, and public restrooms.
◆
There are nearly 10 miles of trails for walking, running,
hiking, and biking.
◆There are paved parking lots for guests.
◆The park also includes the Manning Environmental
Field Station, a site for research by DePauw faculty
and staff.
◆
Take Walnut Street west from downtown Greencastle.
the park entrance is on the left side of the road.
◆
Group tours and educational programs are available
upon request.
◆
For information about the park, contact the Ranger
Station, 765-658-1076 or visit the Nature Park web
