The mass blackout of the Earth Hour global action
sponsored by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on 27 March
2010, from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m., is to be centered at
Monas Park in Central Jakarta.

The director of Climate and Energy Program of WWF
Indonesia, Fitrian Ardiansyah said prior to this historic
event, a number of communities would undertake
motivation actions throughout the day. One of the
activities is cycling on the city streets, which is to be
held by Green Map community along with Bike to Work
community.

The mass blackout will also take place in other cities such as Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Bali. In
Yogyakarta, as many as 200 ontel bicycles of a local community are scheduled to hold various activities
along Jl Malioboro to enliven this one-hour action.

In Bali, this earth saving action will be marked with actions by some 60 painters who will make their
creations on a 60-meter long canvas under the theme of power and environmental saving. These
activities are to be held in Kuta Karnival area.

This year, WWF Indonesia is focusing more on socialization to students and communities in big cities.
The result is quite encouraging with many schools, universities and communities expressing their
commitment to participate in this blackout.

"There have been 14 schools declaring their willingness to take part in this global action," said Fitrian
during a media gathering in Jakarta, Wednesday (3/24).
One of the schools is SMA YMIK which will hold a campaign of this global program in Kota Tua area in
West Jakarta. "We do this spontaneously after attending the WWF workshop. If it does not start from
ourselves, then we will not be able to take someone else," said Ina (16), one of SMA YMIK students.
A similar campaign will also be carried out by University of Bakri School of Management, targeting 60
office buildings located in Kuningan area. Around 200 students of the university are now doing
approach to the buildings’ managements, encouraging them to take part in this program.
From industry sector, one of the electronic giants, PT Sharp Electronic Indonesia, will also join the
global Earth Hour 2010 program by turning off lighting at its main office as well as Sharp billboards in
Sumatra, Java, and Bali.
