Courses are offered through radio and Independent Learning Courses. The Wahsa program aims to: Enables you to complete your high school studies at home Utilize 21st century learning programming (SMART Board and Brigit software) Offer you alternative ways to earn a provincial high school diploma Open gateways to secondary education through technological innovation Promote First Nations culture through community based design Empower individuals and communities to realize benefits in a global age Develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for future success Expectations of Students As a student of Wahsa Distance Education Centre, they are expected to: Be motivated and self-directed Participate in conferences, radio, telephone and computer Take responsibility for their learning Seek assistance when required There are 2 ways for you to complete your course work: Radio courses require you to participate in 4 broadcasts per week over a 9 week term. Completing one course credit per term is the best way to get started. Independent Learning courses require you to telephone your teacher for assistance to complete your independent study work within a 10 month period. Students listen to a radio broadcast class in one of the Community Learning Centres. Wahsa Community Learning Centres There are community learning centres in each of the participating First Nation Communities. Learning centres are classrooms for students who take radio or independent learning courses. Radio courses can be heard via radio airwaves or through the Expressvu dish. Everything that students need to be successful is provided through the learning centres. Ontario Secondary School Diploma You must earn a minimum of 30 credits to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, including: 18 compulsory credits 12 optional credits 40 hours of community involvement Successful completion of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. Compulsory credits (18) 4 credits in English (1 credit per grade) 1 credit in French as a second language or Native language 3 credits in Mathematics (at least 1 credit in Grade 11 or 12) 2 credits in science 1 credit in Canadian history 1 credit in Canadian Geography 1 credit in the arts 1 credit in health and physical education .5 credit in civics .5 credit in career studies plus: 1 additional credit in English, or a third language, or social sciences and the humanities, or Canadian and world studies 1 additional credit in health and physical education, or the arts, or business studies 1 additional credit in science (Grade 11 or 12) or technological education (Grades 9— 12) Optional credits (total of 12) The learning centres are monitored and maintained by Distance Education Coordinators who provide support and encouragement for students. May be earned by successfully completing course from the school calendar Students can earn S.S.G.D. and O.S.S.D diplomas. Contact Education Counselor for more information.
