DECEMBER 2011 VOLUME 5 NO. 3 MIKE HEYWOOD, EDITOR LAURA SCHER, PUBLISHER KIWANIS CLUB OF HUNTINGTON BEACH DECEMBER 6TH MEETING TO FEATURE SURF CITY SINGERS! O ur first December meeting will feature the Surf City Singers from Huntington Beach High School’s outstanding performing arts program. If these youngsters can’t get you into the holiday spirit, then you must be a real Scrooge…(Hey, I wasn’t talking about you Mayfish!) These performers will run through a lively and entertaining program of traditional holiday tunes. You won’t want to miss this program! DECEMBER BIRTHDAYS! His efforts will pay off in less worry for folks who volunteer to tow the trailer to our event sites. Thanks John!!! Then Rich Meyer and I built 7 new shelves for the cargo container to facilitate much better use and organization of fifty+ years of reports and information as well as items used for our various activities. In the future, if everyone simply puts things where they belong, it will make preparation for upcoming events much easier! I’d like to give a special shout-out to Rich for helping me with the shelving and reorganization. Thanks Rich!!! And BTW, please be sure to attend our next Board Meeting, slated for Thursday, December 8.” “The Prez” Shawnee Merten William O’Connell AldeeWinter DEPLOYMENT FEAST O n November 9th., our Club, assisted by members from neighboring clubs, provided a tasty “deployment” feast for a unit of National Guard citizen warriors who serve as Military Police. The 314th Army National Guard MPs are being sent to Guantanamo . Here’s The Prez’s note to the other clubs in our division who helped make the event a rousing success: “Over 400 meals were served! (I had to make a last minute run to Costco for more chicken, tortilla’s and cheese sauce.) I wanted to thank some businesses that made a big difference. First, Zubies Dry-Dock provided all the food via donation (except the chicken) and pre-sliced and diced everything to save us time. Lucci’s Deli loaned us hot boxes so the beans and rice could be pre-cooked and kept warm. Round Table Pizza donated our drink cups. We had a lot of compliments and “thank you’s” from the military families about the food and service provided. Amy Scruggs, the country singer that performed for our club last summer, drove from San Diego an volunteered her time to sing the National Anthem.” The Tustin Club provided funds as well as volunteers. Special thanks to President Mike Grumet, Director Linda Hahn, Project ANGELS Chair, and her team who helped make this event a real success! CLOTHE THE CHILDREN D on’t forget to add an early morning activity for Saturday, December 3rd. That’s when event chair Nouha Hreish will be marshalling her team of Kiwanis, SLP youth, HBHS students, family and friends when we host needy youngsters as they enjoy a shopping spree at Wal-Mart! If you haven’t participated in the past, this is a “don’t miss” opportunity to put yourself in the holiday spirit!
