£20,000 pledged during the 2011
Telephone Campaign!
The 2011 Telephone Campaign has been another huge success. During October and
November, current students spoke to over 1,200 alumni and nearly £20,000 was
pledged in support of the Annual Fund, which will help support current
and future students in their studies.
For the student callers, it was a great opportunity to speak to alumni who had
studied the same course. Many received invaluable career advice and tips
on how to make the most of the Cardiff Met experience…

2011 was a momentous year for our university despite the difficult
economic climate. We have continued as the top ‘new’ university in
Wales in the Times University Guide, retained our position as the
top university in the UK for international student satisfaction and
climbed 50 places to be recognised as the 20th most
environmentally friendly university in the UK in the Green
League 2011.

You may also be aware that the University has recently responded to the proposal by the Higher
Education Funding Council recommending merger with the University of Glamorgan and the
University of Wales, Newport. The Board of Governors agrees with the National Assembly’s recorded
preference for voluntary collaboration (as opposed to merger).

One of the major developments has of course been our change of
name. As of 1st November 2011, we officially became Cardiff
Metropolitan University. I know that many of you have seen several name changes over the past 60
years and we have grown stronger as a result. We are confident that our new identity will continue to
build on the good work of UWIC and our founding institutions.
Your support is now making a real difference, with new scholarships being created and world-class
research continuing to change lives. As a charity, we rely on the generosity of others to enable
developments like this to take place. Remember that every penny of your donation goes directly to
your chosen ‘cause’ and not on administration costs!

Why not challenge yourself by taking part in a sponsored event? We are registered with
Justgiving.com so you can create your own fundraising page for your friends and family to sponsor
you. Over the past couple of years, we have raised more than £1,200 from staff running the Cardiff
Half Marathon. Could this be the challenge for you? If so, we’ll even give you a t-shirt for the big
day! The race will be held on 14th October 2012. The 2011 race was sold out with 15,000 runners
taking part, so register early to avoid disappointment!

“I don’t know if you know much about Cardiff Met’s research… Well Professor Rose
Cooper is currently studying the use of manuka honey as a way to combat MRSA.”
During our 2011 Telethon I found myself saying this often. Many people, unless
they had picked up one of the previous alumni magazines or newsletters, had no idea
that the place they had studied at was doing such ground-breaking research.
To be honest, until I joined the campaign, neither did I. This is one of the reasons
why the telephone campaign is so important. Current students speaking to alumni
raises money for a variety of brilliant causes including world-class research, scholarships,
library resources and community projects. But it also tells our alumni that they have a
university to be proud of.

I was delighted to be a part of something with so many positive ramifications. I had the
chance to talk to some genuinely lovely people. To all of UWIC’s alumni (whom I shall
soon be joining!) I would say, when you get called next year, seize the chance to talk to
enthusiastic students, your advice as graduates is invaluable to the people you are
talking to and any donation you can give is not only valued and generous but 100% of it
is funding the future!

Supporting Students
Sports Photography and
Journalism Scholarships
provided with your support
Your donations have enabled us to create two new
bursaries for Sports Journalism and Sports
Photography. Danny Donovan, 3rd year BA (Hons)
English and Popular Culture student was awarded
£1,500 to be a Sports Journalist in his free time within
the Student Union’s Media Department and he said:
"I'm so grateful for this bursary that has enabled me to
work as a journalist for the Students Union. Now more
than ever as an undergraduate it is important to stand
out from the crowd, and this opportunity has allowed
me to build an extensive portfolio of professional,
quality articles that I can show as I aim towards a
postgraduate journalism training course to enter a
career in the media. I will always appreciate the chance
I have been given, provided directly by alumni.
I will definitely return the favour when I am in the
position to."
In addition, Tin Lee, MSc Hospitality Management
student was awarded £1,500 to be the Sports
Photographer within the same department. He said of
winning the bursary: “I'm so delighted to be the Sports
Photographer for the University. This great opportunity
has enabled me to develop a professional photography
portfolio which will certainly increase my employability.
It has also developed my creativity skills as well.”

Ceramics Scholarships
With the cost of undergraduate studies rising, many students cannot continue
their education to postgraduate level. Being able to provide scholarships for
postgraduate study really makes a difference. This academic year, we were
lucky enough to be able to offer two MA Ceramics Scholarships supported
generously by the Fenton Arts Trust. Sharon Richards, one of the lucky

Libraries update
Thanks to your donations, the Learning
Centre (Library) at the Llandaff Campus will
benefit from a refurbishment of the central Help
Desk. Following the Centre’s extension, which
was opened last year, this will provide students,
staff and visitors with an identifiable help desk,
welcome and information point that is fit for
purpose. Work on this will start very soon for it
to be ready in time for the 2012-13 academic
year.
Annual Fund supports
new equipment
Through your generosity, the Annual Fund has
made several awards in the past year. One of these
awards has supported the School of Sport’s SCRAM
degree (Sports Conditioning, Rehabilitation and
Massage) where they were able to purchase some
much needed new teaching aids including a
skeleton and several specialist resources. Mike
Wadsworth, an alumnus and Senior Lecturer on the
course said about the new resources: “they have
really benefited the students because it enables
them to work in smaller groups, each with their own
reference materials.”
Wales Sports Centre for the Disabled (the ‘Cynoced Gym’)
Sport Appeal Update
Last year, as we celebrated 60 years of the School of Sport, rugby
legend Gareth Edwards and Olympian Lynn Davies appealed for your
support for a world-class sports centre at the Cyncoed Campus. Some of
these plans are now coming to fruition and we are so grateful for the
donations we have received to date. A major refurbishment of the Wales
Sports Centre for the Disabled (known to most as the ‘Cyncoed Gym’) has
been agreed. This will increase the floor space and overall capacity while
retaining and enhancing the number of stations that are available for our
disabled and able body users. We hope this will be completed for the
2012-13 academic year so watch this space to find out about its progress!
The gym is open to the public so if you would like to find out about
membership, please contact alumni@cardiffmet.ac.uk for more details.
Research Fund
Matched Funding News
The Research Fund, which is supported by your
donations will be awarding up to £50,000 next month.
Watch this space in the next issue of Horizons to find
out which projects have benefited.
You will be pleased to hear that your support has levered over
£320,000 in matched funding from the Higher Education Funding
Council for Wales (HEFCW). We are delighted that the scheme has
been so beneficial. The UK-wide aim by the Government was to
promote philanthropic giving to Higher Education and it has
certainly paid off for us, with over 260 new donors since the
scheme began in 2008.
