It is essential that you attend the orientation program otherwise you may miss out on information that affects your study. It is also a good way to familiarise yourself with the campus and make friends. The purpose of the orientation session is to fully inform new students of most aspects of life at the Institute and to provide an introduction to studying and student support facilities. In addition Institute staff will be introduced, a tour of the Campus and the local area will take place and an opportunity to ask questions will be given. In the case of an emergency all students must follow the protocol listed below: 1. You may hear a continuous siren alerting the occupants of the building to evacuate the area, remain calm and follow your Trainer’s instruction 2. All students will be told to vacate to the designated assembly area and remain there till the attendance roll is called 3.Be sure to listen for your name and respond promptly, as an other staff or student may endanger themselves looking for you 4. If you are away from your group, in the event of a fire, 5. Follow the fire exits and remain at the nearest safe assembly zone 6. Leave all personal belongings and stay away from the hazard 7. Report any noticeable persons missing to your Trainer 8. Remain calmly in the designated area until instructions have been given by those of authority PLEASE BE ADVISED: Ensuring your well being is a part of our commitment to providing a safe study environment, if you witness anything that you perceive or believe to be unsafe please ensure you report this to your trainer in charge. In this environment students can then benefit from the training and teaching and support that Baxter Institute provides. The Institute has a Complaints and Appeals procedure to provide students with a fair and equitable process for resolving any disputes or complaints they may have. There are consequences for noncompliance with the Student code of behaviour including immediate suspension or cancellation in the case of severe breaches and or behaviour that may be construed as threatening to the safety of the student, other students or any person on Baxter Institute premises. The Student Code of Behaviour requires the following rights and expectation to be respected and adhered to at all times. • The right to be treated with respect from others, to be treated fairly and without discrimination regardless of religion, racial and cultural differences, sexual preference, age, disability and socioeconomic status. • The right to be free from all forms of intimidation • The right to study in a safe, clean, orderly and cooperative environment • The right to have any disputes settled in a fair and rational manner (this is accomplished by the Complaints and Appeals Procedure) • The right to work and learn in a supportive environment without interference from others • The right to express and share ideas and to ask questions • The right to be treated with politeness and courteously at all times • The expectation that students will not engage in cheating or plagiarism • The expectation that students will submit work when required • The expectation that students will be punctual for classes • The expectation that students will treat institute staff, trainers and fellow students with respect and without discrimination • The expectation that students will maintain consistent attendance by attending all required classes and assessments. Where an application is withdrawn or cancelled, notification by submitting “Cancellation Form SS115” must be provided with a refund application. Refund applications must be made by sending the Refund Application form FN108 to the Institute. The student Refund Application Form is available from the Institute/website. Both forms must be submitted by email to: refunds@baxter.vic.edu.au, in person or faxed to (03)9654 1049, attention “Finance Department”. Refunds will be made within 20 working days of receipt of application and will include a statement explaining how the refund was calculated. A processing fee of $300 will be deducted from any refund. The refund will be paid to the student or another person nominated in writing by the student. If a credit card is used to make payment(s), the Institute will refund the amount on to the credit card used for the payment(s), unless otherwise advised. The refund will be paid to you within 10 working days from the day on which the course ceased being provided. Alternatively, you may be offered enrolment in an alternative course by the Institute (if eligible). You have the right to choose whether you would prefer a refund of tuition fees which have not incurred, or to accept a place in another course. You will need to re-enroll into the alternative course. To ensure tuition fees are safeguarded, Baxter only collects no more than $1000 from each individual student prior to commencement of the course. Following course commencement, any additional fees required in advance from the student which is attributable to tuition or other services yet to be delivered will not exceed $1500 at any given time. 3. All fees and charges per calendar year must be paid in full prior to course commencement unless a “PAYMENT SCHEDULE AGREEMENT” (PSA) is arranged with the Institute. Students may be excluded from class and subject to the Institute’s cancellation process for non-payment of course money. Payment schedules are not affected by the deferral or suspension of studies. 4. Tuition fees incur when the course commences. Baxter Institute may offer installment payments on the basis that the payments will be made on the scheduled dates. If a student is in breach of the payment arrangement, the Institute has the right to cancel the payment plan and request full payment for the entire amount owed, also, the Institute’s cancellation process will be commenced as this is a breach of the Written Agreement and the Institute’s Code of Conduct for students. 5. Students applying to enroll into another course with the Institute are not allowed to until: a) the minimum payment related to tuition fee and material & equipment fee required as per the offer letter has been paid and b) any outstanding debts have been paid. 6. If an enrolled student obtains permission to transfer to another course within Baxter Institute, all unexpended fees paid will be credited to the new course. 7. Payment will only be allocated for material and equipment fee after the full payment of tuition fees for the first study period has been paid. 8. There will be no tuition fee reduction granted for students that complete a unit of competency earlier than the proposed end date. 9. There will be no tuition fee exemption granted for students that complete a unit of competency/qualification earlier than the proposed end date. The form can be downloaded off the institute’s website or collected at the student hub. Step one Complaints and Appeals can be lodged in writing via the Complaints and Appeals form. This form must be submitted to the head office. Attach supporting documents where possible. Step two The appeal/resolution phase will be activated within 10 days from lodgment of form. Step three Students will receive an invitation via post to attend a meeting. Students have the opportunity to bring further documental evidence to support their complaint/ appeal. Students may bring a support person to the internal appeal meeting. The meeting is documented and used to make a final decision. Step four A written internal appeal outcome letter will be posted out to the student within 12 working days after the internal appeal meeting has been conducted stating the reason for the final decision. Step five If the student is dissatisfied with the outcome of the internal appeal, the student has the right to lodge an external appeal with Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), an independent external mediator. Local students may use ASQA as an avenue for complaints external to the RTOs complaints procedure. It is a meeting between the institute and the student prior to course commencement, which allows the student’s current skills and abilities to be considered, and informs the development of an individual learning/ training plan. The pre-training review will assist in determining the appropriate training and assessment options and support strategies necessary for the student in order to successfully complete their qualification whilst addressing any special needs. As a part of the review, the student is expected to complete a foundation skills test. The Foundation Skills test at Baxter has been designed to measure student ability against the five core skills (learning, reading, writing, oral communication, numeracy) of the ACSF (Australian Core Skills Framework) which is the preferred framework to measure current ability and identify necessary gap training; the test also measures digital literacy. The test results reflect the student’s core skills profile against the ACSF so that assessors can interpret the result to place the student. Please refer to the Domestic Course Guide 2014/15 for any specific qualification requirements. Complete assignments, research and learn to analyse data and present arguments about subject matter. All these involve use of libraries, intensive note taking, and active participation in the learning process (as opposed to passive listening and rote learning). To be a successful student, you will need to adapt to these methods of learning, however Baxter Institute is very willing to help as we offer academic guidance and assistance to develop effective study skills. Many trainers at the Institute have vast experience in vocational teaching, they understand the difficulties in getting used to different study methods and they will be patient in helping you to develop new skills. Utilise Baxter Institute’s to broaden your horizons and gain more valuable knowledge. Learning Management System (LMS) Baxter Institute offers students an interactive learning management system, where they can access their learning resources anytime and access information regarding assessments. In some courses students use the LMS to complete assessments and submit their work online as well. In other training department functionalities such as forum and discussion boards are also used by the students. 22 REMEMBER: Your Course Coordinator, Teaching staff and all Administrative staff of the Institute are available to provide general advice and assistance with matters such as studying, homework, English language problems and learning difficulties. Students requiring special or intensive assistance must contact the Course Coordinator or Student Support Manager of the Academic department who may refer them to external support services if required. Students completing assessment requirements for part of a qualification will be awarded a Statement of Attainment indicating which modules or units of competency they have completed. Course Assessment A number of approaches to course assessment are used by Baxter Institute’s staff. Assessment approaches may include: observation of performance in class, workshops; case studies; portfolios; assignments; presentations; role plays; written tests, exams and work experience. Students will be given advance warning of the time and form of any assessment. Re-Assessment Students are permitted a maximum of 3 attempts for assessments; your assessor will review each attempt that is not satisfactory and recommend areas to focus on for further study. If after the 3rd attempt the student still cannot complete the assessment task satisfactorily, the student will normally be required to repeat the unit. At the discretion of the course coordinator, the 4th attempt may be granted. Course delivery A number of approaches to course delivery are used by Baxter Institute teaching staff. Course delivery approaches may include trainer led classroom delivery; workshops; seminars, supervised study and computer aided learning.
