What’s in a name? Well, when it comes to the marketing of the Westside as a tourism destination... a lot! The municipality’s chosen name will become the name that represents the community to potential visitors. In other words, the new name will become the “brand” that will be marketed internationally. Finalizing a name, will allow a more detailed tourism marketing strategy to be implemented that incorporates the new name in advertising and promotional materials designed to position the Westside in the international tourism marketplace. As with any brand, recognition grows over time as accumulated marketing creates a firm impression in the minds of consumers. Thus, choosing a name starts the very important, long-term process of creating the Westside tourism brand. Another important aspect of marketing Westside C H A M B E R C H AT T E R tourism is the impression made by the community after tourists have chosen to visit. Positive impressions will lead to favourable word-ofmouth advertising. One means of projecting a positive image to Westside visitors is to have an attractive and prominent Visitor Information Centre (VIC). One of the signifcant contributions made by the Westbank and District Chamber of Commerce to the promotion and expansion of Westside tourism is housing and operating the Westside’s only VIC. The Chamber has begun the process of investigating the building of a new VIC a building whose main floor would showcase the Westside and its attractions, with the upper floor(s) housing the Chamber offices along with room to house other community organizations. The completion of this project will require the support of the community along with the support of local, provincial, and federal governments. A challenge? Yes, but I know that Westsiders are more than equal to the task!■ COME ON OVER Get in a round or two at the Chamber golf tourney Success of marketing program shows there is pent-up demand from business T The Westbank & District Chamber of Commerce newly formed Business Enhancement Committee initiated a pilot project titled “Come on Over, Shop & Experience the Westside” This campaign was planned to be in conjunction with the events of Westside Daze, the bridge opening and to showcase our new city. In addition to displaying Westside Businesses, the program also focused on inviting visitors to experience other Westside attractions. The overwhelming participation of businesses and public demonstrated enthusiasm and pride of the Westside as a new identity. Dragon’s Den is a partnership between the Economic Development Commission and Central Okanagan School District #23 aimed at promoting the entrepreneurial spirit of local students. ■ The Come on Over Campaign Committee would like to thank all 150 plus businesses who took part in this first Annual campaign. The Westbank & District Chamber of Commerce arranged for over $10,000 in Media advertising for the public to become aware of the logo and ComeOnOver.info website, where all participating businesses were listed with the business discount for the week June 25th – July 1st. The idea was for the business to take advantage of Special Media pricing to advertise their specials. With only 7 weeks from concept to the conclusion of this event, many businesses were not able to take advantage of the media opportunities, however it is the Westbank Chamber’s hope that next year businesses will have in their 2009 budget to support Come on Over media opportunities. We have asked all participating businesses to complete an evaluation form so that we can make next year’s campaign bigger and better. Special thanks to Wright On Signs for their swift work in creating signage for the Press Release, and the whole Business Enhancement committee for their dedication to making this event a success. ■ Westside Community Foodbank is hosting their 1st Annual Golf Tournament at Two Eagles Golf Course on Saturday August 23rd.
