Dear GJS Families:
Our March school newsletter is ready, and will feature most recent events in the Secondary and
Primary School Years.
Sunday, the 22nd of March featured our inaugural PTA organised Family Fun Run / Walk.
Global Jaya students of all ages participated with many of their parents in the 2.5 and 5K distances.
The skies where blue and spirits were bright on the day. We must congratulate all PTA members
for such a successful event with over 500 people enjoying the Run and Walk. Many students
helped with the run by marshaling, cheering and insuring the runners and walkers were feeling
welcome. We hope to make this an annual event at Global Jaya and I personally look forward to
next year’s, Fun Run/Walk.
With the changing season and temperatures, there are a number of students and staff with colds
and flus. GJS is helping fight off germs and the passing of infections be installing anti-bacteria wash
stations around campus. Please remind your children to always wash their hands after playing and
before and after eating. We hope the washing reminders located in each bathroom help educate our
students to keep them healthy and happy.
Our term break will begin on the 27th of March. We anticipate many parents and students on
campus on Thursday and Friday (26-27) of March for Mid-Semester conferences. Students are
encouraged to participate in MSC to further their development and enhance their individual learning
goals. The final Term will begin for students on Tuesday, 7th of April.
As mentioned last month, our senior students will write the all-important final IBDP examinations,
beginning on the 4th of May. Year 12 students will receive offers from Universities and some
with conditions upon publication of their final scores. We wish all Year 12’s the very best in their
preparations for final DP exams.
We wish you all a wonderful holiday break and that you use the time wisely to reflect and prepare
for the final Term in this academic year.
One final reminder for Year 10 parents, your sons and daughters are to complete their Diploma
subject selections by the end of April to be signed by parents and handed into the Secondary
Office.

In our current unit of inquiry about the media, the Year 2 students were lucky to get help
from some Year 5 student mentors. The Year 5 students worked with either 2A or 2B to
demonstrate a simple animation program called Pivot.
They then mentored the Year 2 students individually as they explored how they could create
simple animations with the program.
It was a really exciting and enjoyable time for the Year 2 students and we would like to say a
big thank you to our Year 5 mentors.
Ibu Nari as Our Guest SPEAKER
As part of our new unit about the media, Ibu
Nari came and visited Year 2 to talk about the
media she uses to promote her home business.
She shared her experiences using social media
such as Facebook and Twitter to rent childrens
toys.
She also talked about how a banner is a great
way to attract people’s attention to her business.
The Year 2 students showed great enthusiasm
and respect as well as asking lots of questions
during this guest speaker session.

ENERGY EXPO
As the culmination activity for their unit inquiring into Energy, the Year 3 students held
an Energy mini-expo. The students worked collaboratively in pairs to demonstrate their
understanding of different sources of energy through science experiments and then made
connections to real life applications.

FIELD TRIP TO ASEAN AND RRC

In our fourth unit, year 5s learned about
countries and their level of involvement
in international organisations as a
reflection of domestic interests. To gain
a deeper understanding, students were
fortunate to visit the ASEAN offices and
Russian Cultural Centre on February 24th
2015.
The session at ASEAN was informative
and engaging. Students acquired new
knowledge, especially on countries
within Southeast Asia. The Year 5s asked
many questions to which the ASEAN
Chairperson responded with enthusiasm.
After visiting ASEAN, the students
continued their journey to the Russian
Cultural Center (R.C.C). There, they met
the Second Secretary of the Embassy
of Russia in Indonesia, Mr. A.E. Zimin.
The diplomat kindly told us about Russia
activities and answered a wide range of
questions, from the conflict in Ukraine
to explaining details about the Russian
national animal.
After Mr Zimin’s presentation, students
were shown an episode from the series
"Masha and the Bear", a cartoon which is
in fact better known in Indonesia than in
Russia.

Model United Nations
As the culmination activity for UOI 4, the Year 5s participated in a Model United Nations
(M.U.N.) Assembly. Together, students represented a total of 28 countries. The students
delivered their speeches, including Rights to Statements and Position Papers. The Assembly’s
topic was enviromental refugees and, as Ibu Regina explained, the Year 5s were lucky to
succesfully pass one resolution following their debate. The Year 5s would like to express a
special thank you to Ibu Regina and the Secondary students who helped in making the M.U.N.
Assembly an awesome two days. The Year 5 teaching team would also like to say thank you
to the students for their effort, professionalism and the commitment shown.

18, 2015. It happened over
the course of 2 days in the theatre.
This Year 6 PYP exhibition was
a celebration of the PYP, where
the students performed and
demonstrated all their learning skills,
profiles and attitudes. The students

and satisfying, as well.

VISITOR DAY

G
lobal Jaya School is always committed to participate and contribute towards the
development of Education in Indonesia. As part of our commitment, GJS has been
regularly welcoming teachers from different part of Indonesia who would like to see
how we operate and learn from us. Recently, on 16th March 2015, 32 teachers visited our
Primary School. They came from different schools including Sekolah Al Azhar Cibubur, Sekolah
Bintang Madani and Sekolah Tunas Unggul from Bandung. Over the course of a day, the visitors
listened to a presentation from our Primary Principal, Ibu Dewi, and also enjoyed a school tour.
Lots of questions were asked by the teachers, ranging from teaching and learning elements,
our school programme, strategies to deal with student’s behavior and how our school caters
for differentiation. We are really proud because the visitors viewed our school with very high
regard. They said that they learnt a lot from this visit and gained some ideas on how to
improve their school.

Reflection on Science
Trip to Ragunan

O
n the 12th of March 2015, my friends and I were having a science trip to one of the
zoos in Jakarta called Ragunan Zoological Park. This Science trip is based on the current
unit that we are studying, which is “Classification”. During this trip, my friends and I
were able to explore more about species of animals from around the world and Indonesia. Our
visit to the 147 hectares-park which consists of more than 2000 specimens gives us a hands
on experience about specimens and classification. Based on the information that we gained
we need to write an essay about the observation that we did during the trip. The essay will
be assessed on the Criterion D which is “reflecting on the impacts of science”. There were 8
teachers and 87 students that attened this trip. Throughout this trip, each of us needed to
complete a booklet, which consisted of a set of questions about classification of animals and
some reflection about the trip. I think the Science trip is a great way to learn more about
classifications because we can study through hands on experience. In-class learning is good,
but having hands on experience is great, as we can experience it in real life and we can
understand the topic better and faster. I believe that this trip helps my fellow year 7s and I in
learning about classification of living things.

The Ragunan Zoo is an environmental friendly zoo. Approximately 50,000 trees cover
their 147 hectares of land. There, you can find all sorts of animals ranging from fishes to
elephants. They also have a whole center dedicated to primates called the Schmutzer’s
Primate Center. They currently have 220 different species and over 2,000 animals under their
care. The Ragunan Zoo was originally called Planten en Dieretuin, back when it was under
the control of Culture Vereneging Planten en Dierentuin et Batavia. In the zoo, they provide
a form of tour train that takes the passengers all over the zoo. There, they don’t only let you
see the animals, for a certain cost, you may ride an elephant or a camel. The Ragunan Zoo
has an area filled with animals liked best by children, too. During the Year 7 visit, we spent
most of our time strolling through the Schmutzer’s Primate Center. The indoor tunnel alone is
200 meters long. They created a natural looking cave with intricate detail. The number one
rule the tour guide set throughout our tour was to not make too much noise. The animals

do not like to be disturbed. After the walk, we sat down in a theatre to watch a movie about
a baby orangutan that lost its home and had to grow up with humans, which was undeniably
interesting.
Our trip to the zoo was held so we could inquire ourselves on the zoo’s classification system as
we have been studying classification in class. The information we collected will be put to use
in our essay evaluation of their classification system. There they had two birdhouses, one is
for the larger birds and the other for the smaller ones. They had a primate center and a reptile
area, too. It was great to be able to know why they put the animals together and why they
kept certain animals separate. How they tried to recreate the animals’ habitat also gives us a
better idea of what type of forests certain animals live in. The trip, although very exciting, was
quite exhausting. Even with all the trees, the heat still beat against us. I feel like if we actually
went to each of the animal exhibits they had, we would understand their structure better as
the map doesn’t show exactly what’s in the zoo. If we actually did continue on however, we
might all have passed out at the end of the day. It was great trip, worthwhile for getting the
information we needed.

Ragunan Zoo is a place that has many different types of animals. When coming into the
front of the zoo, we saw lots of different directions to where the animals are located. It helps
tourists to find what they want to see.
I saw the different types of monkeys and orangutans or apes, which was quite interesting
because if you notice, there are a lot of differences between them. Some of the animals I
saw include lions, different types of tigers, snakes such as pythons and cobra. I also saw
crocodiles, an interesting type of turtle called Kura-kura Kura Pipi Merah and many more.
In my opinion, Ragunan Zoo is a great place to visit when your family is on holiday or school
field trips. The place is big enough for more animals to join and it is well-organized. Other
than that, there are lots of other improvements to make it a better place, such as hygiene and
cleanliness. There should also be signs to show people that littering is not allowed and that
you should flush the toilet. You should bring masker if you visit this zoo since there are a lot of
animals around them.

t was pleasing to see the U8 B team improve. They started from zero. Most of them are new to
playing soccer, but with enthusiasm in practice, they made a huge improvement. Winning the
game was not our goal and they learned that losing a game is not the end of the world. It’s just
a postponed win and it taught them to practice harder. Playing for fun is the first priority. They
never worried about the final score, they just played as best as they could. During practice, we
focused on game rules and basic technique such as dribbling, passing and shooting. These became
their basic skills so they could play confidently, being sportive and showing respect to the referee
and also to the opponents. We would like to say thanks to the parents for their continuing support
during the season and for your cooperation in making U8B a better team.

Sports assist in promoting the importance of
teamwork, effort, goal setting and commitment.
Interschool athletics are competitive, but
winning is not the measure of success.
Sportsmanship, respect for participants and
dignity in the face of adversity are more
important than the outcome of the contest.
Not all athletes perform at the same level,
but all can demonstrate effort, dedication and
fair play. The Primary Sports Programme is
based on three basic principles; commitment,
participation, sportsmanship (CPS).
This year the U10 soccer team was coached by
Pak Eka and Pak Mike. They are both happy with
the improvement of the players both as people
and also as players. The students that signed
up showed great commitment by showing up
to practices twice a week and games on the
weekend. The team showed great attitudes
towards each other and other teams. They
showed good sportsmanship regardless of the
outcome of the game or how they were treated
by the other team. They came to practice and
worked hard. They made great strides as the
season went on in their skill development and
implementing those skills in game situations.
Most importantly they had fun and learned.

ur season had its highlights, with boys scoring over 60 points and winning games. We had
an opportunity to advance in the playoffs but after hard fought games, we lost to both JIS
and SPH-KV.

Over the December break many players attended extra practice sessions, demonstrating great
commitment. We would like to recognize all senior students and especially our captain, Taufan.
He was more like a player-coach and both Pak Nicolas and Pak David appreciate all of Taufan’s
leadership and help throughout the season.
