The most recent professional development, academic and extracurricular activities are highlighted in our newsletter, including: the Primary Teacher Exchange Programme to a PYP school in Tasmania, the Year 9 Trip to Beijing, GJS Charity Concert and ‘Take a Stand’ an Anti-bullying project in Secondary. Global Jaya School continues to examine and look to improve its programmes and safety on campus. Recently, we have witnessed students arriving to school on motorbikes, scooters or bicycles without helmets or appropriate footwear. We have initiated a new Health and Safety policy that reminds the community of Indonesian Laws and GJS expectations. Our new Health and Safety policy with regards to helmets and driving onto GJS Campus will be posted at entrances. “For the safety of children and all members of our community, please follow our expectations. GJS Leadership and Security are enforcing the following.” Thank-you. a) All students are required to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle, bicycle or scooter to and from Global Jaya School. b) All students riding motorbikes, scooters or bicycles must wear proper footwear (not sandals or ‘flip flops’). c) Drivers of motorbikes, scooters or vehicles must adhere to the 10 Kph speed limit on campus. d) Senior students who are of age must register with the Secondary Office and receive approval from Principals in order to drive onto campus. All Year 12 students in the Diploma and Courses Programmes will begin their examinations on Monday, the 4th of May. We have a very strong cohort this year and a few students are predicted at 40 points or above. To date, the strongest DP result at GJS has been 42 points out of a possible 45. We encourage all seniors to stay focused on their exams and prepare thoroughly for each paper they must write. All DP exams will be completed by Friday, the 22nd of May – All the best, Year 12’s! Hornby Head of School 2 Global Jaya School PRIMARY NEWS Primary Teachers Exchange Programme to Friends’ School Tasmania By Ibu Windy T he Teacher Exchange Programme at Global Jaya supports and provides teachers with the opportunity to apply for an exchange between teachers from IB World Schools in The Asia Pacific region. As exchange teachers, they have the opportunity to learn and compare different educational systems; exchange ideas and knowledge and develop their understanding and practices. This academic year an agreement was arranged between Global Jaya School and The Friends’ School in Tasmania, Australia. The duration of the exchange was for a week. At the end of Term 3, five of our Primary teachers participated in the Teacher Exchange Programme with The Friends’ School. These teachers were Ibu Nira, Ibu Hety, Pak David, Ibu Maria and Ibu Santi. Orientation sessions were conducted by the school upon their arrival followed by visits to class areas. Each teacher had requested to explore specific areas of the school, they were able to investigate particular focus areas and inquire into various strategies and practices implemented by the school. Upon their return, they are required to contribute to the professional development of teaching colleagues by leading a professional inquiry group. Their experiences and knowledge gained while on exchange will surely add value to the school community. Through this programme, Global Jaya’s teachers were able to broaden their educational horizons and develop their international mindedness by extending their personal travel and cultural experiences. Global Jaya School 3 Kindergarten "The students used a globe and flashlight to support their Front Loading activity about Day and Night. They were thinkers when they held the flashlight to represent the sun and spun the Earth to experience day and night." "Students had a picnic after having a discussion about what kinds of activities people can do during the day?" "During an English lesson, the Kindergarten students were introduced to the sound and letter 'U'. Students had the opportunity to explore the words 'up' and 'under' in the playground by positioning themselves according to their understanding of the positional terms." 4 Global Jaya School Reception Observing colours in nature In this colour unit, the Reception B students walked around the school to observe colours in nature. They were able to tell why some leaves have different colours. eg. If the leaves are getting dry the colour will change. They also shared their understanding of why some fruits change colour after a certain period of time. e.g. Ripe and unripe fruits have different colours. Colours Experiment During this unit, the Reception students experimented on how coloured water gradually changes the colours of flower petals and vegetables. Global Jaya School 5 Year 2 Ibu Aji's visit At the beginning of our new unit about how different media can be used for different purposes, we were lucky to have the help of an expert from our own school community. Ibu Aji, the GJS community liaison officer, was our guest speaker and she shared about the different media used by our school and their advantages and disadvantages. She also told us how much some of them cost which was a surprise! Media Safari The Year 2 students were very excited and enthusiastic about our Media Safari activity. This was one of the learning engagements for our current unit of inquiry about the media. In this activity the students toured the local environment by bus taking photographs of different media messages in the local environment. We then went to and explored Bintaro X-change where we took photos and video clips, as well as collecting flyers and other printed materials. Everybody had a lot of fun on the safari! 6 Global Jaya School Year 4 As part of the front loading activities for our UOI under the transdisciplinary theme "Who We Are" with the central idea of "The interconnectedness of body systems and lifestyle choices contributes to human health," The Year 4 students created outlines of their bodies on a large piece of paper. Then students drew what they thought their digestive system looks like and where they thought it was located in their bodies. Global Jaya School 7 Year 5 For our current Unit of Inquiry, the Year 5 students are learning about the body’s circulatory and respiratory systems. On Friday, 17th April 2015, students did a rotational lesson to develop their scientific understanding of the main organs, including a dissection of a goat’s heart and making a model to represent the lung. During the heart dissection, students got the opportunity to explore the different parts of heart. They learned that their heart is approximately the size of their fist, that their heart never stops working and its muscle is the strongest in the body. During the model-making session, students used a recycled plastic bottle, balloons, a straw and play-dough to demonstrate how a lung works. Both activities helped students realize how important it is to keep their body healthy. On April 14th, Year 5 students attended a ‘Health is Wealth’ workshop, designed and delivered by guest speaker, Dr. Vismai Schonfelder. The workshop challenged the students’ understanding of health; what it is, why it is important (to themselves and the community) and in what ways they can maintain a balanced lifestyle. In small groups, students were asked to discuss the different perspectives about the human body – clever versus not clever, natural versus artificial, whole versus in parts, friendly versus not friendly. The Year 5s showed enthusiasm when measuring their own heart rates after different activities and teachers were proud to witness the students’ openmindedness when participating in a relaxation exercise. By the end of the 2-hour workshop, each student’s individual learning journey was evident in their creative health mind-map and the range of questions that came from the session. 8 Global Jaya School Year 6 For our current unit, "How We Organize Ourselves", Year 6 students are learning about entrepreneurship. They are learning how to produce, finance and market a product or service. As such, the students have particular roles in their business as either a financial, marketing or production manager. Futhermore, some guest speakers (Luna’s uncle Pak Chico, Sabrina’s dad Pak Yusuf and Rizqi’s dad Pak Hanif) were invited to explain more about entrepreneurship and the specific skills needed as an entrepreneur. Also, Year 6 parents became involved in this unit as investors to provide start-up capital for the students. The students are very enthusiastic about building their own businesses! Global Jaya School 9 GJS Charity Concert O By Anindita Indri Hapsari (11C) n April 20th 2015, Global Jaya School held a charity concert titled ‘From Us With Hope Part 2.’ The stars of this concert were the visually impaired students from SLB-A Pembina Tunanetra Jakarta, a school specializing in education for the visually impaired. These gifted students showcased their many different talents including drum band, poetry reading, Angklung, choir, a full band and even Gamelan. The concert also featured collaborations between students from SLB-A and Global Jaya School and a breathtaking performance by our very own teachers as well as guest stars Helmy Yahya, Otti Jamalus and Yance Manusama. Prior to the event, the students and teachers from SLB-A visited Global Jaya School for rehearsals. This allowed pupils from Global Jaya School to know what special care the students from SLB-A required, especially the visually impaired students, and to allow them to get an idea of the layout of our stage. Overall the charity concert was truly an inspiration to everyone. The talented students, as well as teachers from SLB-A, reminded us that with hard work and dedication we can reach for the stars and fulfill our dreams. 10 Global Jaya School Year 9 Be ijing Trip SECONDARY NEWS By: Ershad (9A), Rafi and Luis (9B) T he Beijing trip lasted 7 days and 6 nights, running from the 1st to the 7th of March 2015. It was an exciting yet terrifying experience; being 3000 miles away from our family and home made the trip almost unpredictable. Eighty-four students from Year 9 and ten teachers travel from the suburbs of Jakarta to the world-renowned metropolis of Beijing. In Beijing, we stayed in the Traders Hotel (managed by Shangri-La). The hotel is a four star tourist-friendly inn where we rested comfortably for a busy week in the Far East. This trip was memorable for us because not only could we enjoy Beijing, but also we got the opportunity to go on a trip with our friends for seven days, which was very fun and exciting. We learned so much about Beijing such as the history, the daily activities of the locals and we also had the opportunity to learn about Chinese culture such as calligraphy. Throughout the trip, we visited the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace, Panda Hall in the Beijing Zoo, Olympic Park, 798 Art Zone, several Shopping Districts, an Airbus Factory in Tianjin City, the University of Science and Technology and the Temple of Heaven. The highlight of this trip was the Great Wall of China visit, in which we had an opportunity to explore the icon of China. It was a great feeling because not only had we explored the icon of China, but we had also explored one of the 'Seven Wonders of the World'. The Chinese traditional tea, called Xiang Piao-Piao was the favorite baverage during the trip. Most of us were curious about how the beverage tastes as a lot of the year 10 students who went on the trip last year recommended us to try it. And yes, enjoying the Xiang Piao-Piao during the winter added to the highlights to the trip. I would highly recommend the students of Year 9 next year to take up this trip and experience life away from the computer screen and your backyard whilst socializing with your friends and teachers; it is an experience worth going through. We also have the opportunity to visit interesting places, which are restricted to the public. For example, we visited the Airbus Factory in Tianjin. Global Jaya School 11 By Pak Andy O n Monday 13 April, Student Support Services together with Pak Andy and a group of talented students launched an ambitious new programme to promote a Safe and Supportive Environment for all members of the Global Jaya School community. The assembly focused on the issue of bullying. While many programmes of this type focus on prevention, we also chose to be realistic. We must be honest and admit that preventing bullying in all its forms every moment of every day in every situation and environment is unlikely. Therefore, we dedicated a section of the assembly to teaching very useful and practical techniques for dealing with it once it has happened: Generalizations - we group things together, like when we say “everyone, nobody, never.” When you hear any of these coming from that voice in your head or from someone else, you can challenge it to be specific: Everyone? Who do you mean specifically? Never? When, specifically? Pak Andy explained that after we experience something bad, we carry it around in our head. Every time we remember, we replay the worst parts and torture ourselves over and over again. If you remember that it is YOUR head you are carrying it around in and that you can do whatever you want in YOUR head, then you can take away all its power by changing the way the memory looks and sounds. Turn the other person into a clown or Bart Simpson; turn their hair into a giant red afro and give them a big red nose or maybe even put antlers on their head or make milk shoot out their nose every time they talk! You can even just make the picture black and white and blurry to reduce its effect on you. Change their voice to sound like Mickey Mouse, or make them talk so slowly that you can’t understand the words anymore. TAKE A STAND Ibu Regina talked about the Roundtable Technique. This involves a facilitator sitting together with the students in conflict to help them resolve the three “Uns.” It is based on the belief that most conflicts can be resolved through communication and that they are based on 1. An unanswered question that needs to be asked, 2. An undelivered communication that needs to be spoken and 3. An unfulfilled expectation that needs to be satisfied. Pak Dhanu talked about challenging our stories about reality. He discussed our tendency to filter most of reality to reinforce what we already believe about the world. We use 1. Deletion– we leave out bits and pieces of information about what happened, 2. Distortion - we transform or interpret information about what happened and 3. Ibu Ingrid talked about how we are our own worst bully. She had all the students take a selfie and then look at it so they could recognize their worst bully. In the next segment, the lights were dimmed and the entire audience stood up and turned on the light on their HP. This filled the theatre with hundreds of bright “stars.” Ibu Regina announced, “Let us be the light that shines through the darkness. Let our kindness touch every heart.” Students were then invited to join together in taking the following oath: Here and now, I vow to take a stand against bullying in all its forms. Here and now, I vow to take a stand against bullying in all its forms. I am not helpless. I will empower myself and others to take a stand against bullying. I am not alone. I will talk to a friend or tell a teacher if I am or anyone else is being bullied. I will work with others to create a safe and supportive environment for all members of the Global Jaya School community. 12 Global Jaya School D In the final segment, each Year level was asked to come down to the stage and sign the banner on which the oath was printed. They were very enthusiastic about doing this and every student and teacher who was present was given a chance to sign. We invite all members of the GJS community to sign the banner, which will be located in the North Wing of the theatre building, at their earliest convenience and join all of us in making this the best possible example of a Safe and Supportive Environment. Commitment, participation and sportsmanship (CPS) are the driving principles for GJS’ Primary Sports Programme and these values defined the team’s soccer journey this year. Throughout practices twice a week and matches every weekend, the girls showed unwavering commitment and came out excitedly for each game. The girls worked as a team by always doing their best in every activity. Furthermore, they showed their sportsmanship by respecting other teams, the referees and following the rules of the game obediently. They improved their skills and had fun, creating lasting memories of high spirits and laughter. The U8 soccer team has been practicing since January this year. We have a mix of new and seasoned players. This year the participants are students from Reception, Year 1 and 2. They were taught basic soccer skills as well as sportsmanship, discipline, cooperation and leadership. This team participated in the Jakarta School Football League (JSFL), which ran from the 24th of January to the 15th of March 2015 currently they are still participating in the Greenfield Cup. Every Saturday and sometimes on Sundays, the students had to wake up early to compete with other schools. They gained a lot of experience and developed new friendships. Fortunately this year, almost all of the matches took place in our school, so the students did not have to travel to a variety of venues for the matches. They showed improvement in their skills and were able to play fairly throughout the matches. Students were really aware that they were representing GJS, so they performed their best in every match. On behalf of Global Jaya School we would like to thank the management and teachers who were involved. We would also like to thank all parents who supported our team. All your support and commitment have been a great way for us to maintain the same level of enthusiasm as last year. Global Jaya School 15 T he PGI (Persatuan Golf Indonesia) would like to start some introductory golf activities at Global Jaya School, with a focus on fun, offering more than the traditional delivery of golf lessons. ASA CORNER By PGI Team By introducing golf in an enjoyable, safe and appropriately challenging way and by shifting the focus away from technical performance, there can be a positive effect on self-confidence, perseverance and feelings of personal achievement. It also shows that golf is truly a sport for all generations. We would like to introduce golf to interested students and will deliver it with the help of ShortGolf equipment. Following on from the initial programme there is also the anticipation that an inter-schools competition can be staged, leading to a forging of links between schools and local golf clubs. It is hoped that the prospect of playing golf is an attractive one for you and your children. The potential social benefits are many and involvement in the sport encourages development of the physical and emotional skills.
