Tunxis Trail: South & Center: Class 1: 8.8 miles & 6.6 miles 2,160ʼ & 1,800ʻ vertical 4.2 & 3.4 hours each. Park 50 yards west of the first driveway. Follow the blue blazes (B) south along both of these the paved roads. At 0.3 miles hike straight past the cul-de-sac entering the forest. At 1.8 begin to climb, passing the Connector Trail to Greer Road. Hiking on this rolling trail reaches Toryʼs Den at 2.8 which you may choose to explore (photo). Keep straight at the junction with the Yellow Dot Trail (B/Y) at 2.9. At 3.5, the Trail takes a sharp left turn 100 yards in front of a reservoir gate. At 4.4 miles, the Tunxis Trail ends at another reservoir gate. Retrace your steps if you are using 1 car. The hike would be 8.8 miles + 2,160ʼ If you use 2 cars, park it at (41°41'58.8"N 72°59'53.4"W) on Marsh Road. The hike would be 4.4 miles + 1,080ʼ Mileage summary going one way south: Enter forest at 0.3 > pass Greer Rd connector at 1.8 > pass B/Y at 2.9 > at 3.5 turn left > reach Marsh Rd at 4.4 B < Old Field Road Park on Old Field Road ,which is off of Johnnycake Mt Road (41°44'59.0"N 72°59'30.1"W). The blue blazed trail (B) enters the woods heading north at this location. The vegetation could be thick for the first 50 yards, but it no longer is a problem as you enter the mature forest. The trail ascends to the junction with the White Dot Trail (B/W) at 0.6 miles. Continue straight and after a very short pitch the trail levels off. Cross Rock Road at 1.4 miles and route 4 at 2.4 miles. North of route 4 it mostly follows wood roads. At 3.2 miles the trail turns left and follows Covey Road to its junction with Hotchkiss Road at 3.3 miles. Retrace your steps if you are using 1 car (6.6 miles +1,800ʼ) If you use 2 cars, park it at (41°41'58.8"N 72°59'53.4"W) on Hotchkiss Road. The hike would be 3.3 miles + 900ʼ Mileage summary going one way north: Cross B/W trail at 0.6 > cross Rock Rd at 1.4 > cross rt. 4 at 2.4 > turn left on Covey Rd at 3.2 > reach your car at 3.3 Alan M.
