Two other boats were blown up onto the airport and one dragged its mooring into the channel. Nominating Night November All members with voting rights are requested to attend the Nominating Night Meeting on November 28th at 7PM. The primary purpose of this meeting is to elect a Nominating Committee. As outlined in the By-Laws, Article VII, Section 2. “A Nominating Committee of five members shall be elected each year by paper ballot. Names for election to said Committee shall be accepted from the floor only. Of the five members elected, the one with the greatest vote shall serve as chairman.” The election of the Nominating Committee is very important because it is the Nominating Committee that compiles a slate of candidates to fill the offices of Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Treasurer, Secretary, Board of Directors, and Audit Committee, all elected annually. Election to the Board of The Barge replacing approximately 20 piles which have Directors occurs as terms expire. broken over time had been hard at work the week of October Usually the Nominating Night Meeting falls on the third 22nd. She always used to tell me that my mother and father were the first people to greet and welcome Tink and her husband, Bill when they moved back to Winthrop several years ago. She loved the fact that I built wooden boats and promoted boat building with my family and friends. I loved to tell her about my trips with my grand children out to Snake Island or the hazardous winter conditions we encountered in the Hull Snow Row (named for Winthrop's own, Edward Rowe Snow) I'd always make a point of rowing or paddling by her house on Washington Avenue to show off my latest boatbuilding project. She was an advocate for the clam digger, lobsterman, fisherman and anyone else that made their daily bread from the sea. She just had it in her blood, the need to get out the news about anything marine oriented, whether it be the latest information about the dredging of Winthrop Harbor or the arrival of the tall ships. She believed that children in Winthrop, besides learning english and math, should have the opportunity to learn how to build a boat. That Belle Isle Marsh was not only a place to visit for a nature walk, but was even more important as an environmental site for migrating birds and clam beds that helped filter the sea water. She loved the beauty of the lighthouses that dot our coast and the history that went along with them. Whether she was writing about the Boston Harbor Islands, Snake Island or Belle Island Marsh, she always made a point of highlighting those people who worked behind the scenes to ensure that these treasures will be there for future generations. I think her biggest disappointment was the fact that Winthrop had no Clam Warden. She will be forever missed! To Tink - May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind always be at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand. (Editors Note: Tink was a great supporter of CPYC and of the Windjammer by adding our events to her weekly column and by making references to the Windjammer. It will be very strange not to send her an issue this month.) ◄ The Hatch Brown Series winners in Opti’s. N10’s, 420’s and Lasers with he trophy, Hatch, Ernie Hardy and Dick Lawton who ran the races. (Pictured on left) The party was a big hit and enjoyed by everyone. As is our tradition the season concluded with a "fun week". The older kids enjoyed a trip to George's Island and a pool day while the beginner class enjoyed swimming and kayak races. The program ended with our annual pirate day and scavenger hunt. It was another successful season on the water for our sailors. Emma and Ally Montgomery placed first in the Championship Fleet at the N10 Open and Town River Regatta's. Marc and Joey Montalto won the Intermediate fleet at Town River. The 2012 N-10 Midgets Regatta was held on July 24th and 25th at the Medford Boat Club. 55 boats participated in this two day regatta, with six from CPYC. (Pictured to the left) Emma and Ally Montgomery finished in second place. Congratulations to 10 year old Christopher Rodriguez (right) won the Merriman Trophy for the best sailor 11 or under racing in the regatta. Christopher actually finished 20th because he did not race for the last Tuesday Twilights two races, It was so windy that half the fleet did not race. He did well enough the first day to win the Merriman! Over the years, there have been a number of sailors from Cottage Park that have won this trophy including (pictured to left) Kayla Famolare, Emma Montgomery, Christopher Rodriguez, Mark Montalto, Celia Moriera. Our beginner class continues to show tremendous improvement and enthusiasm for the program . Both Tuesday Twilights ( run by Mark Montalto) and Tiller Time helped strengthen the beginners. CPYC hosted The Juniors Regatta for the second year in a row. We had one of the biggest fleets ever with 16 sailors age 13 or older single- handing an N-10. 5 clubs were in attendance. It was a beautiful day of racing and when all was said and done only one point separated 1st and 2nd. 1st Ethan Cash WYC, 2nd Cecilia Moreira CPYC, 3rd Michael St. Jean CPYC. (Cecilia Moreira pictured right sailing Lil' Rebel) We had very good finishes at the N10 open, MAW and there was participation in our Hatch Brown Series by many of our sailors. The program would not be possible without the hard work of our instructors. All the instructors led by Lianne did a great job this year. The Youth Sailing Committee would like to thank the Flag Officers and Board of Directors for their support and assistance during the season. The program would not succeed without their support. The Youth Sailing Committee Member Spotlight This month the Windjammer is spotlighting member and artist Frank Costantino. An architectural illustrator of international note, he is also a watercolor artist. Often you will see Frank on the head pier with his easel and paints capturing CPYC scenes. He has been very generous donating works to our Make-A-Wish events over the years. Frank will be having four shows around Boston November through January: THE FRAMER’S EDGE, 210 Quincy Ave., Braintree, MA Saturday, November 3, 5-7pm; Portrait Showing,” Display of drawings and talk by Editor Judith Champa of Art New England, Thursday, November 29, 6-8 pm., CANVAS FINE ARTS GALLERY, 162 Boylston St (Steinway Bdg.) 6th Floor, Boston, MA; “New Directions” December Show at: Thom. CPYC Adult Holiday Party December 15th Details to follow The Bosun Reports —The launch Windjammer went through a major restoration this spring. No item was left unchecked. Some feared that things would not be put back together again. Jim Economides hard at work Traditional food decorations abounded The boat was restored successfully as shown below. Pete Towner fills his plate A salute from the Economides and Murphys In addition the Windjammer had to undergo a USCG mandated stability test. This test was performed by a qualified naval architect during which barrels filled with water were used to challenge the stability. Italian Night was held on October 19th. Attendees stuffed themselves on great Italian food. Organized by Janine Stanton: John, Denise & Jim Economides, and Dave Aloise cooked the food. They were assisted by Marty Klim & Larry Buote. The Aranovs and Jane & Brian Murphy/Rupp helped serve & prep. Progress Update Thank you to Dean Fairbrother and Dave Aloise for all of their hard work in the restoration and upkeep of the launch. The second boat was the canal boat Normandie which they picked up in Trebes and motored down the Canal Du Midi for a week with the final drop off in the city of Narbonne. ▲With his burgee always packed, Leo Vannoni has really gotten into this. The February 12th selection is J.K.Rowling’s book “the Casual Vacancy.” Her first adult novel, it is described on the cover as “A big novel about a small town” and the war within it. Judy was the innovator of the Ducky Regatta, the Vehicles of Distinction, and Drop-inBowling. She played a key role in the Indoor Triathlon. Our deepest condolences to Judy’s husband, Keith O’Brien and our thanks for sharing Judy with us. She will be missed. *** Our sympathies to Jack and Lois O’Connell on the passing of Lois' mother Elizabeth Sirignano.
