You Can Make A Choice
When I was a kid growing up, we had a
tradition that many families share; at each
birthday, my sister & I would stand as
straight as we could against the closet
door, and with a pen we would mark off
our height and the date.
Then we would stand there for a moment,
and take in all of the marks from our previous birthdays. Each mark was a thing of purity, a child’s way of
celebrating a year lived, and with delight we could see just how
much we had grown.
In some ways, the High Holidays do much the same thing. This
time is set aside for each of us to take stock of who we are, and
where we are, compared to years past. Not only that, but we are
given permission, perhaps even the mandate, to think about who
we are, compared to who we might yet be.
Judaism holds that we each have incredible potential to live lives of
tremendous meaning, rich in healthy relationships, with sacred
moments abounding through our work, our family, our community,

and our commitment to healing a broken world. But to do this
work, we each have to make it intensely personal.
Hasidic Tale
There is a Hasidic tale of the Rebbe speaking to his grandson about
two wolves.
“Inside each of us,” says the Rebbe, “there is a fierce battle between two wolves. One wolf is called the Y etzer HaRah (The Evil
Inclination). It is fear, anger, arrogance and false pride. The other
wolf is called the Y etzer Tov (Good Inclination). It is the empathy,
joy, kindness and love. These wolves are fighting each other constantly, each trying to get the upper hand on the other. “But grandfather,” asks the child, “which wolf will win?”
The Rebbe paused, and looked deeply into his grandson’s
eyes. “The wolf that will win is the wolf that you feed the most.”
The High Holidays are a gift. They are a time for us to evaluate,
and to consciously and actively change.
Yom Kippur calls from the depth of our soul, “Don’t wait until
something happens to you. Live the life you want to live. Start
living that life… now. ”

Mitzvah through a sponsoring gift.
You may choose a special portion of the Torah that has meaning to you, such as a loved one’s
Bar or Bat Mitzvah portion, or a special phrase, such as a day of creation.
Just as we accepted Torah from our ancestors in the past, we preserve it and transmit it to our
children and through them to the next generation- our future.
We invite you to take the first step on this incredible journey.

It is a positive commandment for every Jew to write a Sefer Torah. If he writes it with his own hand, it is as if he had
received from Sinai. And if he hasn’t the expertise to write one, he should commission someone else to write it for
him. Anyone who corrects even one letter of a Sefer Torah, it is as if he had written it entirely.

From Our Co-Presidents
While many of you have been enjoying vacations and
and you’ll hear more about it during the High Holy Days.
relaxing with family, Temple Emanu-El has been a flurry of
activity and change. This first month of working with Rabbi
Spike has been nothing short of amazing. He is an extremely
thoughtful and spiritual rabbi. Having Rabbi Spike, Rabbi
Scott, and Cantor Lauren together on the bima has created
one of the most spiritual Friday night services we’ve experienced at Temple Emanu-El in a very long time. If you have
not been to services in a while, we encourage you to come.
We are endeavoring to make Friday night services more accessible for our younger families and are currently working
with Rabbi Spike to develop a babysitting program; more
details to come.
MEMBERSHIP SEASON IS HERE
Membership season is here, and we need your help. Our
membership committee is led by Lori Bohrer and Jill Spector. They are guiding the efforts, but we benefit the most
when everyone participates. If you know of friends, coworkers, neighbors, or others who are not affiliated with a
synagogue, invite them to one of our upcoming events. It’s
that easy. If you would like for someone at the synagogue to
contact a prospective member, please call the office and give
us their contact information. We will take it from there.
If you visited our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/
TEAtlanta), you likely recognized our two Rabbis alongside
a new face visiting our camp kids at both Camp Coleman
and Camp Barney. We are excited to have hired Bryan Kellert as our Youth Engagement Advisor. His focus will be on
engaging our young people through more activities within
our synagogue. He will also work with our college students,
keeping them connected to Temple Emanu-El.
Around the building, you will notice some changes designed
to improve overall security. We worked with the Sandy
Springs Police Department, the Federation’s security chief,
the Department of Homeland Security and our private security firm, basing changes on their experience and recommendations, with a goal of ensuring the building is safe and
maintains a warm, friendly and inviting feel. The upper
parking lot is now gated when the building is empty. During
business hours, visitors entering the building will be asked to
sign in at our reception desk and given a name badge to wear
while in the building. We have also added cameras surrounding the campus and added caller ID to the phone system. Our
number one goal is ensuring the safety of the building while
simultaneously maintaining a warm, friendly and inviting
environment.
Our children have always been an important part of what we
do at Temple Emanu-El. Schiff Preschool is expanding, offering full-day for children. We have hired Beth Blick as our
new principal for the Diamond Family Religious School.
Beth taught in our religious school for many years, and we
look forward to some exciting programming being initiated
in this fall. A big Thank Y ou goes out to Gloria Lapin as she
retires from that position.
Our Meet and Greet event, held at the d’Vine wine bar this
past weekend, was a successful get together. It was great to
see old friends and meet new ones.
We have a lot of programming in the works, from museum
day trips to adult education and more. We know that an engaged congregation is a happy, thriving congregation. Our
goal as your co-presidents, is to help make Temple EmanuEl a meaningful part of your busy lives. We encourage you
to come and experience all the synagogue has to offer. We
know you’ll be excited at what you discover.
We hope that everyone has heard about our Torah project. It
is with great joy that we – the Temple Emanu-El family –
have commissioned a Torah to be written in honor of Rabbi
Colbert, recognizing his contributions not only to Temple
Emanu-El, but throughout the community. The program is
both a spiritual and educational journey for our families.

Many stories have been told about how in times of ca-
bestowed upon me. The glorious experience of writing a
new Torah is not limited to me. It will involve the entire
congregation.

Torah Scroll or Sefer Torah holds a very special place in
the Jewish heart. All that is sacred is bound up in the
parchment and letters of a Sefer Torah. Not only does the
Torah contain the Instruction of Moses, but it also tells the
story of the Jewish people. The Torah is ours. Yet, we are
commanded to share it with the world. We are told to be an
Or L’Goyim- a light unto the nations.
On October 11th, our local sofer-scribe, Rabbi Mordecai
Danneman, will be here to teach us about the process of
writing a Sefer Torah. Each member of the congregation
will have the opportunity of fulfilling the 613 th commandment, which is to write your own Torah.
With this project we will accomplish three goals:
The leadership of Temple Emanu-El has declared this year
to be the Year of the Torah. Not only will our learning be
steeped in the traditions of Torah, but we have commissioned a new Sefer Torah to be written for our congregation.
Looking at our Holy Ark in the sanctuary, you see many
scrolls. But there is only one Torah that is kosher in the
main sanctuary. The other scrolls have become imperfect
because of age or use. A Torah Scroll has to be perfect in
order to be ritually fit.

The Torah will bring us closer together as a congregation. Each of our hopes and dreams will be inscribed
in this scroll as we each write a letter in it. To hold the
quill as the sofer writes will touch your heart.

The Torah project is a major fundraiser for our congregation. Our goal is to raise $613,000.00 in honor of
the number of mitzvot in the Torah. This project will
ensure the financial future of our congregation.
So, I was deeply humbled when the congregation decided
that they would commission a new Torah for our sanctuary
in my honor. There is no greater kavod – honor that can be

We have had a busy summer at Temple Emanu-El.
It’s
generally a time for refreshing the building, cleaning the
classrooms and preparing them for the new school year. And
we get primed for the High Holy Days.
traffic plan. We require tickets from all adults at the following events: Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah day one,
Kol Nidre, and Yom Kippur. You’ll be asked by the ushers
for your ticket to each of these services. You’ll surrender that
service’s ticket. For Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur you can
come to the Alef or Bet service. Should you have any problems entering the building ushers will be happy to assist you.
This summer we have added a revamping of the entire security of the building. The access control has been expanded and
improved dramatically. High definition cameras have been
installed around the building to ensure that we can see the
exterior of the campus. Additionally, we can send footage of
any suspicious activity to the police for investigation. Last
but not least, we have upgraded our telephone system so that
we can be more responsive to our congregants with unified
messaging and even caller ID. All-in-all, our technology has
been upgraded throughout the building so that we can provide
a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.
The parking plan will be different than in years past. Sandy
Springs Police officers will be controlling traffic on Spalding
Drive and in our parking lot. We highly encourage everyone
to use the busses that provide service between the Davis
Academy lower and upper schools and the temple. It’s the
easiest way to get to and from the temple and your car. Parking is extremely limited in the temple parking lot. Busses will
be running all day between the Davis Academy and Temple
Emanu-El. The neighborhood across the street will be closed
to parking. The police department has requested that we not
park in that neighborhood.
We ask for your patience as we phase-in new procedures for
the synagogue. A new receptionist should be in place within
the month. Access to the building during the day will be
changing to better –secure the building. And visitors to the
temple during business hours will be asked to check-in with
the receptionist and get a visitor badge to wear while in our
building.
Keep in mind that your safety and convenience are of the
utmost concern to us. We strive to provide easy, convenient
access to the synagogue for your spiritual experience during
the High Holy Days. Should you have any questions feel free
to contact our staff at Temple Emanu-El.

Our music program is open for children K-7, teenagers, and

long commitments, it’s just all about having a good time,
and enjoying the music.

As we start the year anew, the Schiff staff and I invite you to

In February, if you remember, there was an impending “ice storm”
which prevented our bakers from cooking in the temple kitchen.
Thanks to several sisters and coordinator Robin Zusmann, we each
baked them at home, boxed them up and transported them to the temple for the March 1st Purim carnival. We provided an assortment of
Hamentaschen pastries, but the favorite is always the chocolate ones.
All proceeds from the sales of these yummy cookies went into the
Religious School Purim Carnival fund.
At the end of March, our Women’s Passover Seder, which was conducted by Cantor Lauren Adesnik, had over 40 women in attendance.
It was so nice to see everyone partaking in the wonderful and educational service, enjoying the music, and eating some delicious food
from our Caterer Loretta who worked very hard in the kitchen. Thank
you to all the women who contributed their delicious Charoset
recipes.
We have been refurbishing our Tree of Life, located next to the small
chapel so we can start fundraising for wonderful programs within
sisterhood. You can purchase a leaf for a simcha in your life and we
will get them engraved and put on the tree.

Brotherhood has had an amazing past year with the year of Engagement. We continued to provide and cultivate friendships
between the men of our temple and strengthened families and
communities. We did this with the accordance of Jewish traditions and values.
This year, one of our goals is to make a commitment to reach out
to younger men in our temple, to grow leadership opportunities
and to participate in some social action activities.
On a beautiful Monday morning, 30 excited golfers were in attendance at the Stone Mountain Golf and Country Club for the
Brotherhood Golf Tournament. This was sponsored by Hilda
Wilson and Stacy Levin In honor of her husband/father Dick
Wilson. We are grateful that the proceeds will go to the Dick
Wilson Scholarship fund for college students.
I hope that this year 5776 will be a successful and engaging year
for the men at Temple Emanu-El.

years. She attends Northwestern Middle School and is entering the 8th
grade. Lainey enjoys math and is an avid diver.
She has been diving for Atlanta Diving Association for over five years and has competed in
events around Georgia, South Carolina and
Tennessee. Lainey spent time volunteering for
Camp Twin Lakes, which is a special camp for
children with serious medical illnesses, disabilities and other life challenges.

Denneen is the daughter of Anne and Jeff
Denneen and sister to
Rachel, 9, and Liam, 5.
Darcy was born in Atlanta and attends the
Davis Academy, where
she enjoys math and
theater. She participates every spring in the
annual school play. Darcy has been raising
money for Give Kids the World, a village in
Orlando that houses kids with life-threatening
illnesses and their families while they experience Disney World on a wish trip. Darcy is also
running the Give Kids the World 5K Gingerbread Run in November 2015. She has already
raised over $3,700. Darcy is an avid dancer,
dancing three to four days a week after school.
She spends her summers at Camp Barney
Medintz.
May 16, 2015: Sarah
Traub is the daughter of
Marilyn and Jeff Traub
and sister to John, 25.
Sarah was born and
raised in Atlanta. She
attended preschool at
Temple Emanu-El. Sarah
attends The Davis Academy where her favorite
subject is Math and Digital Arts. She collected
supplies and food for rescue dogs with the
organization, “Angels Among Us”. She has
been very involved with this wonderful organization fostering dogs. Sarah is an accomplished and talented dancer and participated in
competitive dance for seven years. She loves
to foster rescue dogs and currently owns two
dogs. She loves scuba diving and roller coasters. Her favorite place to go is French Woods
Performing Arts Camp.
May 16, 2015: Lauren
Botwinik is the
daughter of Heather
and Phil Botwinik and
sister to Sara, 9, and
Heidi, 9. She has resided in Dunwoody all
her life and has attended Temple Emanu
-El since she was an infant. Her naming was
performed by Rabbi Julie Schwartz at Temple
Emanu-El. Lauren attends Peachtree Middle
school and is actively involved in the National
Junior Beta Club Band where she plays the
clarinet. She also plays soccer and has been
appointed to the principal’s list for the last two
years.
Lauren enjoys learning about science and history. She chose to do a mitzvah project for her
favorite sport, soccer. Lauren is collecting soccer equipment, shoes and clothing in any size,
shape and condition to donate to the U.S. Soccer Foundation Pass Back program. This program began in 2002 to bring the game of soccer to kids that do not have funds or equipment
to participate in the sport. She enjoys playing
her clarinet and running with her golden retriever named Tracker. Lauren is an accomplished

soccer player, competing in several competitive
soccer programs. In her free time, Lauren enjoys tutoring younger students in their academics.
May 30, 2015: Kaitlin
Goldstein is the daughter of Gayle and Eric
Goldstein and sister to
Ashley, 11. She was
born in Atlanta and has
lived here her whole life.
Kaitlin has attended The
Diamond Family Religious School since second
grade. She loves the friendships she has developed at Temple Emanu-El. She attends
Peachtree Charter Middle School and is entering the 8th grade where she is in the gifted program and will start in the new STEM program
this year. Kaitlin spends much of her free time
playing soccer. She plays for her middle school,
Concord Fire Club, and she was selected to
represent Atlanta in the upcoming Maccabi
Games in Dallas, Texas. She is very excited to
participate, travel and meet other young athletes.
For Kaitlin’s Mitzvah project she chose to support a close friend who has Cystic Fibrosis. She
gathered her friends and family together and
organized a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation walk
through “Great Strides”. Kaitlin raised a lot of
money and awareness for this disease and its
treatments. This was an incredible spring and
summer for Kaitlin. She shared not only her
own mitzvah, but then celebrated her Grandma
Sheila’s big birthday with a family trip to North
Carolina with aunts, uncles and cousins. Her
Pop Pop, Alan, also had a big 80 th birthday and
she went on another family adventure to Alaska! Finally, she went to her favorite summer
place, Camp Barney Medintz. Then, off to Dallas for the Maccabi Games. She is a girl full of
adventure, spirit, family and love.
June 6, 2015: Erin
Edwards is the daughter of Sheri Okun and
Drew Edwards. Erin
was born in Atlanta and
lived here her whole
life. She attends The

"Caring, Doing and Connecting"
The Caring Committee invites you to be a part of Temple
Emanu-El’s mission to expand the ways we to comfort, support
and care for our congregants in times of need and times of joy.
Together we can help make Temple Emanu-El a place for
friends to turn to when they need a helping hand or when they
wish to share in their joy. It only takes a small contribution of
time when many people contribute. Your participation in our
Caring Committee will ensure that congregants in need receive
a caring response.
We are expanding to form a new subcommittee to meet the
needs of our congregants in senior or assisted living. Volunteers
are needed to make personal phone calls and visits. Please consider performing this mitzvah by giving just a small amount of
your time to enhance the lives of those in need. Show you care
by giving of your time. Join us by volunteering as a substitute
caller, deliver food, make phone calls or visits.
To volunteer, please call Ann or Gerri at the numbers below.

visit or have a family member who would like a visit.
