The Best Year, Yet! San Diego, California Nam-Deuk Kim & Jung-Yun Lee Triple Diamond LEADERSHIP PATRIOTISM GENEROSITY D E T E R M I N AT I O N Four ideals we strive to exemplify. Four traits we aspire to cultivate. In the global family of Amway IBOs, we see them in impressive measure. At Achievers ’10, we saw them in even greater dimensions. The four IBOs who received Amway Hero Awards embody our highest ideals for this business. • Leadership Hero Valeriy Solodyankin, a grateful U.S. immigrant and entrepreneur who leads by humble example. • Patriotism Hero Jeremy Wodjan, a police officer who supports his community and country by helping young people succeed. • Generosity Hero Beverly Sallee Ophoff, whose greatest joy comes from sharing her influence, time, and money with others. • Determination Hero Josh Kennison, whose awe-inspiring spirit – not physical limitation – defines his life. If you have not watched their videos on AchieveMagazine.com, we encourage you to take time to do that soon. Their stories remind us that with the right opportunity, support, motivation, and attitude, anyone can make this world a better place for themselves, and for others. If you’re like us, you will be uplifted, humbled, amazed, and inspired to live better lives. Deliver it in plain language that is down to earth. 3 Be relevant. Get to the point, leverage facts, and avoid hype. 4 Show them, don’t just tell them. Fresh new sponsoring insights, exciting new product launches, innovative selling ideas, and tips for building your business were on the agenda. PAGE 12 | Translating powerful words and breakthrough innovations into businessbuilding activity is what Achievers Expo is all about.” AchieveMagazine.com | PAGE 13 TRAINING Words that Work Freedom. Family. Fun. Author, acclaimed political analyst, and Fox News commentator Dr. Frank Luntz says if you want to build your business, talk about family and fun. In a special 2½ hour “Messaging Bootcamp,” Luntz shared his unique insights with Achievers. Entertaining, funny, and full of practical guidance on improving your game, he delivered information IBOs could put to use immediately. Enthusiastic feedback indicated that IBOs found the session, in a word, priceless. “Three letters – WOW … astonishing … thanks for helping us open our eyes … simply the best … thanks for bringing him … he is a key to the launch of a greater business in North America.” Watch for more from Frank in 2011! It’s about freedom and control.” What are words that work? They are words and phrases that have been tested and proven to be effective in delivering a message … words such as freedom, family, and fun. When we speak to people about the AMWAY business, we want our message to be clear; we want people to understand what is being offered to them. Taking a cue from author, acclaimed political analyst, and Fox News commentator Dr. Frank Luntz, ‘It’s not what you say, it’s what people hear.’ That’s why, when IBO leaders suggested we work with Frank Luntz, THE authority on using ‘Words that Work,’ we all said, ‘Let’s do it.’” ™ Bob Andrews, IBOAI PAGE 14 | The right words influence and motivate.” IBOs Sharing Their Knowledge from Stage = Achievers IBO-led training is always a hit at Achievers. This year was no exception. Check out the fresh new information from this year’s sessions. Social Media and YOU! You hear it on the news, you see it at the movies … social media. What is it? How can you use it? Kathy Victor and son Joe showed IBOs how to harness the energy and convenience of social media to keep downline IBOs engaged and customers interested. Finding Opportunities Sparking curiosity about our products and business is simple when you approach people the right way. Bill Hawkins, IBOAI, shared tested, effective techniques for using products to drive interest in the business. Maximizing Your Profitability It’s true: What you don’t know can hold you back. AchieveMagazine.com | PAGE 15 RECOGNITION NIGHT Enchanted evening of celebration Family Jeff, Steve, and Doyle Yager: “We joined our parents and grandparents as well as all of you in the most amazing, positive, and supportive community in the world. Now we’re passing all this on to the next generation … a fourth generation for us … all for a bright future.” Freedom Kanti and Lata Gala: “We started our AMWAY business because we wanted more financial freedom, and we have achieved that. But along the way, we also gained even greater freedoms. The freedom to believe in possibility. The freedom to help other people succeed.” ™ Hope Darlene and Theron Nelson: “Every dream starts with a heartfelt desire to achieve something better in this life. Because of Amway, we’ve had the privilege of offering hope … real hope … to so many people.” Reward Maribel and Theo Galan: “For us, money is important, but other rewards have been even more valuable … the confidence we’ve gained, the lessons we have learned, the skills we have developed, the travel we have experienced, the recognition we have received, and most important of all, the friends we have made.” A Bow to Incredible Leadership Those leaders are: Double Crown Bill and Peggy Britt, Amway IBOs since 1970; Founders Crown Ambassador and founders of Britt WorldWide. Reaching the Crown level is a significant business accomplishment, attained by a very small group of IBOs worldwide. Becoming a Crown in one market is a strong testament to leadership skills and determination. In two? A pretty amazing accomplishment! On Recognition Night, we stood to applaud not one North American business that has accomplished this, but, two! PAGE 16 | Tim Foley, an Amway IBO since 1981; Founders Crown Ambassador and eFinity leader. 55 FAA It was only a year ago we listened to strains of “Amazing Grace” open an emotional Recognition Night celebration of Jim and Nancy Dornan’s achievement of 50 Founders Achievement Award (FAA) points. The couple didn’t stand back long to reflect on their success or savor the rewards. Their incredible work ethic has driven the business to an astounding 55 FAA points this year. AchieveMagazine.com | PAGE 17 GROUP ACTIVITIES Islands, Cruise Ships, and Bears OH MY! Achievers Ahoy! A trio of memorable excursions showed IBOs the beauty, majesty, and wonder of San Diego’s coast and culture. At the world-famous San Diego Zoo, IBOs saw polar bears frolicking in ice-filled waters, tigers prowling along a misty river, and gorillas swinging through their spectacular tropical setting. A narrated bus safari took travelers off the beaten path to lush, sweeping canyons and countless animal enclosures. PAGE 18 | Aboard a magnificent cruise ship for a tour of San Diego Bay and Harbor Island, IBOs experienced an unforgettably scenic cocktail hour. With panoramic views of the glittering San Diego skyline in the background, passengers enjoyed up-close views of historic landmarks and natural wonders. We’re excited to share how much fun we had on the excursions so our group will want to come too!” On the island excursion, IBOs experienced the breathtaking beauty of Coronado Island, the exclusive attractions of La Jolla, and the rich history of San Diego. In a region defined by its Spanish, Mexican, and Native American heritage, visitors enjoyed fabulous shopping, gourmet dining, and world-class sightseeing. AchieveMagazine.com | PAGE 19 FINAL NIGHT aboard the USS Midway I’ve been coming for many years and didn’t know it could get any better, but it did!” Live the Adventure; Honor the Legend! The USS Midway, a retired U.S. aircraft carrier, provided a unique backdrop for the final night of Achievers celebration. Nearly three football fields in length, the flight deck was the perfect spot for an evening of food, music and dance, mingling with friends, and a spectacular display of fireworks. IBOs browsed the aircraft displays; climbed in flight simulators; posed for photos with World War II-era soldiers and characters; danced to big band music; and crossed their fingers that they would be the lucky one going home with the new Cadillac CTS. All in all, a wonderful end to maybe the best Achievers yet! Ship facts: The USS Midway has a proud history of service to her country during her 47 years at sea. Christened during World War II, the Midway saw duty during the Korean and Vietnam wars and Operation Desert Storm before being decommissioned in 1992. PAGE 20 | AchieveMagazine.com | PAGE 21 NEW PLATINUM Celebrating early success Achieving Platinum is one of the first memorable milestones along the path that Amway IBOs travel. It represents uncommon commitment, unyielding dedication, and unwavering leadership. For new leaders who receive the coveted invitations, New Platinum Conference is the first exclusive Amway invitational event, and along with it, the first Business Meeting with other new North American leaders, exposure to renowned field leaders; corporate-led training; and the first opportunity to browse a Business Expo exploding with new ideas for business growth. Add an evening of food and fun and laughter at Dave & Buster’s and a glittery final Recognition Night to celebrate achievement … and it’s a night new Platinums will never forget. Let’s see you at registration in 2012! With solid support, positive relationships, and a passion for helping others, you can achieve Platinum too.” PAGE 22 | AchieveMagazine.com | PAGE 23 TRIPLE DIAMOND 2010 The Best Year, Yet! It was a year of celebrations for Nam-Deuk Kim and Jung-Yun Lee. First, Double Diamond recognition at Achievers 2009 and at Diamond Club 2010 in Maui. Then, Double Diamond Recognition Day at Amway World Headquarters in Ada, Michigan. Recently, Triple Diamond recognition at Achievers 2010 in San Diego. On the personal side, they celebrated more good news when their son Wonrae (age 10) was accepted at the prestigious private school that his brother Hyunrae (13) attends. Both talented musicians, the boys are nurturing their musical talents by performing with the Seattle Youth Orchestra. At age 3 their sister, Eunrae, is already showing musical promise. Jung-Yun says they’re all excited to be moving to a house not far away from school and church, with a view of the Cascade Mountains and Lake Washington. PAGE 24 | Rewind – 2010 Memories stream in when Nam-Deuk and Jung-Yun look at pictures taken just over a year ago at Achievers ’09 in Orlando. Recalling the joy and exhilaration of being on stage with his wife, Nam-Deuk says, “We danced in celebration of our Double Diamond pin.” When the couple achieved Double Diamond, Nam-Deuk bought a new camera he had his eye on. “I love it!” he says. “Now I can take awesome pictures of our trips with higher quality photos.” After an exciting Double Diamond Day filled with employee greetings, executive meetings, and a VIP tour of the World Headquarters complex in Ada, Nam-Deuk and Jung-Yun were ready for some family time – on beautiful Mackinac Island in northern Michigan. Maui, the setting for Diamond Club 2010, was the perfect place to try out his new camera. With the island’s beauty as a backdrop, Nam-Deuk took hundreds of pictures of the family swimming in the resort’s gigantic pool, whale watching, zooming down the mountainside on a zip line, and sightseeing via their helicopter tour. Making the drive from Ada to northern Michigan at the start of a holiday weekend, with tired children in tow, doesn’t sound like a celebration. Enter the solution – a private, stretch limo to make the trip to Mackinac Island. The family was stunned by the vehicle. “It was one of those huge Hummer limos. We’d never seen anything like it,” says Nam-Deuk. “It was amazing!” Fast forward to June They had a blast. “First, we took the ferry. It was a beautiful ride, and arriving on Mackinac Island was like going back in time,” Jung-Yun says. “We had to go by horse and carriage or bike, because there are no cars there.” They had a grand time biking and hiking around the island, visiting the little shops, playing on the beach, and touring Fort Mackinac. Great family memories were made and beautiful photographs captured the trip. The couples’ Double Diamond Day celebration started in Seattle. Early in the morning, the entire family boarded a private corporate jet bound for Michigan and Amway World Headquarters. Dozens of downline IBOs and some prospects made the early morning trip to the airport to see them off. AchieveMagazine.com | PAGE 25 Storytelling sells ideas and products Nam-Deuk and Jung-Yun believe in the power of personal storytelling. They teach downline IBOs to develop this skill as a selling technique, encouraging people to become better at listening and then responding with personal stories they’ve compiled through their own experiences. Perks and dreams Nam-Deuk and Jung-Yun say they are grateful for the Corporation’s recognition of achievement. “Amway asked us what we like, and now they make sure we get it when we go on trips,” says Jung-Yun. “They know how to make us feel appreciated. The incredible suite at the Grand Hotel on the Island, the special gifts in our rooms. It’s truly amazing.” To celebrate going from Double to Triple Diamond and Jung-Yun’s birthday, they took their dream trip to the Holy Land. “It was an unforgettable trip for both of us,” she says. What makes a story great? According to Nam-Deuk, it has to come from personal experience. “It’s not about convincing. I might start with a fact, but my stories come from my perspective. In a way, I’m inviting the listener into my life.” Sharing stories helps sell products and build relationships. “Stories hold people’s interest and build understanding,” says Jung-Yun. “It’s the same whether we’re talking experiences with a product, our personal life, or business. People remember a story better than a list of facts.” “It was fantastic! I took 8,000 pictures,” says Nam-Deuk. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY GROSS INCOME EARNED BY “ACTIVE” IBOS WAS $115 (U.S.)/$181 (CAN.). The success depicted may reflect income and investments outside the IBO Compensation Plan. Approximately 66% of all IBOs of record were found to be active.* The percentage of IBOs who achieved Founders Executive Diamond and above qualification in FY08 was .00565%. * Based on an independent survey during 2001, “Active” means an IBO attempted to make a “Gross income” means the amount received from retail sales, minus the cost of goods sold, retail sale, or presented the Amway Independent Business Owner Compensation Plan, plus the amount of Performance Bonus retained. There may be significant business expenses, or received bonus money, or attended a company or IBO meeting in the year 2000. mostly discretionary, that may be greater in relation to income in the first years of operation. PAGE 26 | In their organization, they foster teamwork. No matter the size of someone’s business, every one supports each other. “In our group, it’s more than products and business,” Jung-Yun says. “We work on spiritual, mental, and financial growth.” A product story can be as simple as telling how their kids spend more time brushing their teeth, just ® because they prefer the taste of GLISTER Multi-action Fluoride Toothpaste. Or it can be more complex. “Technical information is good, but it’s not as compelling as talking about things from a personal perspective,” says Nam-Deuk. Building strong community Nam-Deuk and Jung-Yun leverage their stories with photos to captivate, inspire, and motivate. They incorporate them ® into their presentations, and they post them on Flickr and on their web site, which is similar to a blog, allowing registered users to comment and post announcements. “It can be a challenge to convince new IBOs about the rewards in our business, but our photos show what success looks like,” says Nam-Deuk. “People want to aspire to higher levels when they see it and hear about it.” Freedom to share what we have The couple believes in charitable giving and volunteering. They support an organization that helps children with disabilities and volunteer at their church. “We recently led a matching campaign through our organization to raise money for mosquito nets to help protect children in Africa from malaria,” says Jung-Yun. Nam-Deuk and Jung-Yun share a life story of innovation, motivation, and inspiration. Their business achievement is almost as remarkable as their devotion to helping others in their organization succeed. “We are committed and motivated to be role models. No matter how far we’ve come, we lead downline IBOs to help them meet their goals and share the AMWAY business with others,” says Nam-Deuk. “We have no interest in slowing down this momentum we’ve created.” ™ AchieveMagazine.com | PAGE 27 RECOGNITION Emerald Reaching Emerald is a significant achievement, the result of sustained effort and successful leadership. As Emeralds, IBOs have demonstrated their ability to sell, recruit, train, motivate, and teach others to do the same. They have built healthy organizations and are reaping the rewards of their hard work. Wayne Chi | Ontario Living the dream: “Because of my AMWAY independent business, I feel like I do have more choices,” says Wayne Chi, whose wife, Iris, stays home with their daughter Elaine, 1½. “In my job as an immigration law consultant, people come to me with problems; now I’m able to help people live better lives through the AMWAY business.” ™ Looking to the future: Earning a Ph.D. in history, traveling the world, and starting a second AMWAY business in his homeland of China are some of their goals for the future. “This business provides us more opportunities to help reach our goals and dreams. We have lots of choices ahead of us,” believes Wayne, “but I know everything will be amazing because every day my wife and I see our hopes and dreams coming true step by step.” Suk Je Lee & Young Sik Choi | Texas Living the dream: For Young Sik and Suk Je, the AMWAY business opportunity arrived with providential timing. “We were in a tough spot financially,” says Young Sik, a minister, who, with his wife, had just started a new church. Looking to the future: “This business has allowed us to give hope and help to so many people,” simply by offering others a means to business ownership and access to “so many quality products,” says Young Sik. According to Suk Je, “We hope someday to build several Christian schools throughout Eastern Asia.” Craig Clickner & Carrie Bohlig | Wisconsin Living the dream: “This business gives us peace of mind,” says Craig, who recently lost his job. Instead of being a “devastating” turn of events, it was “a minor setback” for the couple. And, he and Carrie, who both played sports growing up, really appreciate the team aspect of the AMWAY business. “We love the camaraderie,” she says. Looking to the future: “Travel is a big passion of ours. We look forward to many trips abroad as we set our goals on building our business internationally,” Craig shares. “We’re also passionate about helping disadvantaged women and children with our time and money; we hope to start a nonprofit organization down the road,” Carrie says. Alberto & Isabel Deval | Texas Living the dream: Alberto and Isabel gave his parents their home in California before they relocated to Texas. “My dream is to buy our next house without a mortgage,” Alberto says. Once unable to see possibilities “beyond our little town,” Alberto and Isabel now travel regularly throughout the U.S. and Mexico. Looking to the future: “This business is much more than a business; it’s a way of life,” says Isabel. “We work together, spend more time with our kids (Ariel, 19; Diana, 16; and David, 13), and get to prioritize how we spend our time. We’re always looking for others who would enjoy this type of lifestyle and be interested in the AMWAY business.” PAGE 28 | Gigliola Despecci & Juan Luis Gonzalez | New Jersey Living the dream: Juan Luis was introduced to the AMWAY business three years ago, and the business the couple had built was their safety net when Juan Luis lost his job due to downsizing. “Thanks to our AMWAY business, we were able to rekindle our goals and dreams for a better future, which is what brought us here from Chile 20 years ago,” says Juan Luis. ™ Looking to the future: “We’re excited to see downline IBOs grow their businesses – even beyond us,” says Gigliola. Adds Juan Luis, “Our deepest desire is to keep Rich and Jay’s founding principles message alive and continue taking that message of hope to others.” Misun & Yeong Man Kang | New Jersey Living the dream: “Before starting our AMWAY business, we had no dreams, just work,” says Yeong Man, who has owned several traditional businesses with his wife. While still putting in full days building their AMWAY business, the Kangs now find great fulfillment in helping others define their dreams. “I really enjoy meeting people!” Misun says. Looking to the future: “Right now our focus is on getting our older son ready for college (Jeffrey is 18, Jason is 16) and helping our parents,” he says. “But we are looking forward to traveling more in the future and having more time for activities like fishing and golfing.” Sarika & Yogesh Lanjewar | California Living the dream: “We knew we couldn’t achieve the lifestyle we wanted by working for somebody else,” states Yogesh. That’s why he and Sarika, both IT engineers, started an AMWAY business. They were attracted to what they call the “family values” in the business. “We were taught to be respectful and to serve others,” he says. “We want to be able to positively impact peoples’ lives, just as our upline has ours.” Looking to the future: The Lanjewars, whose daughter, Palak (1), was born during their year of Emerald qualification, love children and have a desire to make a difference by opening an orphanage in India. “That will require both time and money to oversee it,” Sarika says. “This business is a perfect vehicle for gaining both of those things.” Juan & Blanca Murillo | Texas Living the dream: “We came to this country to work, but the money (we earned from our jobs) was never enough,” Blanca says. Despite their best efforts, they and their six children ended up homeless and sleeping in a park. “It’s thanks to this AMWAY business opportunity for giving us hope for the future that our life began to get better.” Looking to the future: “Yes, material things are important,” says Juan, “but the most important thing is that I’ve restored my relationships with my family.” We enjoy working together growing our business. In fact, all six kids are building AMWAY businesses of their own. “We’re looking forward to having them and our ® 18 grandkids with us at Walt Disney World someday!” AchieveMagazine.com | PAGE 29 RECOGNITION Mark & Meredith Nathan | Illinois Living the dream: “Living only for me was very unfulfilling at the end of the day,” says Mark, who started his AMWAY business at 22. He and Meredith come from an acting background and find the AMWAY business model of helping others live better lives refreshing. “Every day we’re living a life of purpose,” she says. ™ Looking to the future: “We’ve built a solid financial foundation that will allow us to choose where we want to go from here,” Mark says. “What we’re really excited about is seeing our friends achieve life-changing goals through this business.” Those friendships “are better than anything I could’ve imagined,” adds Meredith. Minj & Keesoo Pak | Michigan Living the dream: After experiencing economic challenges in Michigan, Keesoo and Minji Pak found hope in their AMWAY business. “We can go anywhere with this business!” Keesoo says. The couple is building their business in Michigan, but also Virginia, California, Israel, China, and Korea! “It’s not just a local business dependent on the local economy.” Looking to the future: Keesoo believes the only barriers to success in the AMWAY business are self-imposed ones. “Anyone who has a dream and works to achieve it has an opportunity to succeed regardless of age, sex, or language challenges. It’s our desire to help as many people as possible achieve their goals and dreams.” Eduardo Rosales & Ana I. Borrero | Florida Living the dream: Bringing their moms from Cuba to Achievers in 2009 was “a dream come true” for Eduardo and Ana. “You make a lot of sacrifices as immigrants to survive and help family back home,” he says. Adds Ana, “Helping others achieve their dreams while working on ours is a big priority.” Looking to the future: If happiness is “loving what you do,” then Eduardo and Ana couldn’t be happier. “We love bringing a ray of hope to others by introducing the AMWAY business opportunity and showing them they can do something different with their lives,” she says. The couple is also passionate about helping organizations that serve women and children in need. Ho-Juhn Song & Hee-Ja Kim | Massachusetts Living the dream: Our AMWAY business has given us more opportunities for a better future. “Every year is better than the last, and today is better than yesterday,” says Ho-Juhn. “We’re living an extraordinary life now because we’re able to make a difference in other people’s lives.” Looking to the future: Two goals motivate the Songs: making sure their parents are taken care of and their children (Sean, 11, and Rebecca, 9) can attend the colleges of their choosing. “We also want to help others achieve their goals and dreams,” says Ho-Juhn. Sharing hope with children Growing Up Green Children digging in the dirt, planting seeds, watering sprouts, pulling weeds … at Boys & Girls Clubs across the U.S., gardens were growing in 2010. By working alongside Amway IBOs and staff, boys and girls in Philadelphia, Denver, Grand Rapids, Seattle, Buena Park, San Diego, and Orlando learned firsthand the value of including more fruits and vegetables in their daily diets. As Boys & Girls Clubs put the garden beds to rest for the season, they cooked up Harvest Parties at each location to celebrate the successful season of growing and learning. Celebrity chefs, the children, their families, and Amway staff gathered to enjoy colorful vegetable snacks, games, and bags full of healthful produce, capping off a successful inaugural year for the program. Or go to AchieveMagazine.com/ Haiti-Project. Providing a Home After the life-shattering earthquake of January 2010, hundreds of thousands of children in Haiti struggled to survive. Without families or shelter, they scavenged for food in makeshift camps. We saw the need. In partnership with SOS Children’s Villages, Amway and legions of IBOs are helping to build a permanent home for boys and girls in Les Cayes, Haiti. Amway IBOs have generous hearts for giving and open their wallets wide for many worthy causes. Still, the generosity of IBOs at New Platinum Conference and Achievers for the “Haiti Project” was especially heartwarming. They texted donations, emptied pockets, and taught their children by example as they contributed more than $6,000 toward the home’s operating expenses. So in the coming year, children will have a safe, new home. Many thanks to all who have contributed! ® The AMWAY ONE BY ONE CAMPAIGN FOR CHILDREN has helped more than 7 million children globally since it was launched in 2003. In North America, the One by One campaign supports numerous causes, including Easter Seals, the U.S. Dream Academy, and those highlighted here. AchieveMagazine.com | PAGE 51 IBOAI Lights Camera! Action Live interviews on the red carpet, streaming video shout-outs, and iPad giveaways drew enthusiastic crowds. Excitement was buzzing in the air and zooming over the airwaves thanks to the IBOAI booth at Achievers ’10. On the red carpet, videographers recorded special IBO messages against a Grammys-inspired backdrop. On the spot, technicians uploaded the videos to YouTube for the folks ® ® back home. Three lucky winners won Apple iPads , and all IBOs received a complimentary commemorative journal, complete with interactive tags (which allowed IBOs to link directly to valuable IBOAI information via their smartphones). Throughout the event, IBOAI staffers were on hand to provide Member support, field questions, and post real-time updates, photos, and videos ® to our English and Spanish Facebook ® and Twitter sites and YouTube. Check out our social media sites for a quick glimpse of Achievers ’10: During the Achievers business meeting, the IBOAI Executive Committee appeared on the ever-popular IBO SHOW. Board Members Steve Woods, Bob Andrews, Bill Hawkins, and MAC Chairman Kathy Victor led standing-room-only workshops on sponsoring, the sales plan, door openers, and social media. G2 and G3 (second- and third-generation) leaders Cale Andrews and Joe Victor III drew big crowds interested in how second- and third-generation IBOs are growing their businesses to levels our Founders dreamed of over 50 years ago. • Facebook.com/IBOAI IBOAI … the voice of the IBO in North America for over 50 years, representing you at every major Amway gathering. PAGE 52 | • Twitter.com/iboai Leading with Strength Steve ur Thanks for dyeorship, service, lea . and wisdom As IBOAI chair in 2010, Steve Woods focused on the strengths of people around him. He led efforts to foster a cooperative spirit through months of challenging, collaborative work. A true leader, he now gives credit to everyone around him for the successful year. You are an expert pilot. Did you draw on your flight experience in this role? As a pilot, you always plan for the worst and expect the best. You have to factor in winds and weather, weight of the aircraft, fuel requirements. You prepare, you plan, and then you fly. The flight usually proceeds uneventfully, but if you have a problem, you’re prepared. You know what to do. That’s how it works in aviation, and how it works in the AMWAY business. I’m confident that what we do works. The products are top grade. When you place an order, it will be shipped. Bonus checks mail every single month. You can count on it. It’s worked for more than 50 years. ™ What advice do you have for other leaders? If you see somebody with a better idea, you can’t be married to your own. You have to be able to change. Work as a connector, find solutions, get people talking. Look for strengths, not weaknesses. Realize that being a leader is not being the boss, it’s the opposite of being the boss. What were the highlights of 2010? The ACCREDITATION PLUS Program was a good thing. The board worked tirelessly on that. Jody Victor and Bob Andrews are real pros, really good at what they do. We have a renewed spirit of cooperation between IBOAI and the Corporation. In my own organization, I was blessed with a bunch of good people who have been encouraging and understanding. ™ What gives you hope for the future? We had a board meeting last year with G2 and G3 people. To see the interaction between them and the board was gratifying and fulfilling. I didn’t hear commitment as much as I saw it, and felt it. We’re all in this together and we’re going to make great things happen. Any insights you would share with others in the business? I take comfort in the fact that Amway is willing to change. From the IBO side, change can be a difficult thing. But change is constant. Go with it. Today, much is necessitated by technology. Whoever would have thought we’d be using smartphones and Apple® iPads® to conduct business? We need to use it all to maintain our leadership position in the marketplace. Change is not just inevitable, it’s necessary. If we don’t change, we’re done. AchieveMagazine.com | PAGE 53 ©2011 All rights reserved. Printed in the USA. LA3911I
