May 2016 - Teurlings Catholic High School
THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER FOR PARENTS OF TEURLINGS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS From Our Principal... A child enters kindergarten for the first day of school. School starts, school ends, repeats then thirteen years later the senior graduates. Many of those seniors will leave home soon to go off to college, never to reside permanently again in their home. You can define “home” as a place where one lives. Teurlings Catholic has been home for many of our students for the past four years, and for a few, a shorter time. We at Teurlings Catholic have embraced the legal term, “in loco parentis,” in place of the parents. Students at school are akin to family members dwelling at home. They are characterized by certain virtues and traits. One must have self-discipline to make the right choices, not what peer pressure dictates, but what one knows in his heart of hearts is right. One must have compassion for others who make mistakes; only Christ was without sin. One must possess the trait of responsibility to one’s self and family, always accountable for his actions. One must display friendship relating appropriately to an individual or group. One must possess a work ethic that will get the job done even when no one is watching. One must have courage to go against the odds in search of discovery. One must possess perseverance, to trudge forward, at all times in spite of the obstacles. One must possess honesty to be truthful, sincere, and genuine at all times. One must possess loyalty to all members of the family, as well as the home. And most importantly, one must possess faith to follow the road less traveled. Our students are challenged by one or more of these ten virtues every year, month, day, hour, minute, or second of their lives, either at home or at school. At Teurlings Catholic we literally take the place of parents for eight to twelve hours a day. While I can list all of the fantastic accomplishments that our students have attained this year, that would pale in comparison to the life skills and character traits that they have experienced. As we enter into the final month of the school term, many opportunities remain for our students to be challenged and recognized. Here are a few: Senior Exams May 2nd-5th; Junior Commissioning Mass May 13th, in the Rebel Dome; Honors Convocation May 15th, in the Rebel Dome; Baccalaureate Mass and Leaders of Distinction Graduation at the Heymann Center on May 16th; and the Chancellor underclassmen examination schedule May 23rd-26th. Rev. Hampton Davis, III For half of a century, Teurlings Catholic has, with open arms, accepted the challenge to offer Catholic Christian education to thousands of families. In turn, your family becomes a part of the Teurlings Catholic family. We will miss our graduating students just like you will miss them when they go off on their own. We will hold our heads high and proud that we have been able to participate in preparing your child for life. Remember, this is a test that generally measures seniors ready to go off to college. Our juniors scored higher than both the state (19.4) and national average (21.0) for the last formal testing of seniors (Class of 2015). In fact, as 11th graders, they are only .3 of a point off the TCHS class of 2015 scores and only .6 off the all-time record here at TCHS. Here’s how the scores compare: NA indicates that data is not yet available for those classes in that category or indicates a class that we did not test at that grade level. As we all know, requirements for the TOPS program are uncertain at this time, but here’s what I can tell you about how individual students scored in relationship to the TOPS proposals we hear about in the news: ▪ Three of the students scored at 30 or above; ▪ 20 students scored a 27 or higher; ▪ 47 students scored a 25 or higher; ▪ 137 of the 178 students who tested scored a 20 or better to meet the current (and probably gone) ACT requirement. Again, remember this is a senior test so our juniors have another year of course work that can drastically improve their scores. A Parent’s Guide to Final Exams… As you read this, our seniors are already in the process of taking their final exams and finishing up the school year. For the rest of our student body, the countdown has also begun, with exams scheduled to begin in three short weeks. No one likes exams, but they are considered a necessity in the educational realm. Here are some things you, as a parent, need to know about exams at TCHS. 1. Midterm and Final Exams each count for 1/5 of the semester grade, or 1/10 of the final grade if you prefer to see it that way. In other words, the exam grade does impact the student’s semester and resultant final average. 2. There are a number of grade calculators out there that can help you see what a student needs to make on an exam to end up with a particular final grade. One of the easiest to use is the one developed and sent home by Mrs. Lauren Jeffrey. I know she does not mind us sharing, so here is the link to her grade calculator: Final Grade Calc.xlsx. Simply fill in the blanks in the spreadsheet for the 1st Semester, 3rd Quarter and 4th Quarter grades (use the current grade posted in RenWeb for 4th Quarter) and you can “play” with the exam grade to see what the final average would be. Start with the grade your student got on the Midterm Exam, since most of the time the two grades are fairly similar. You can then go a little higher and a little lower and see how that impacts the final average. 3. Now that the importance and impact of the Final Exam has been shared, how can you help the student prepare? ▪ Complete all study guides, if available. No, this does not mean copy the answers from someone else or complete it as a group. Study guides are most effective if the student finds the answer and writes it out. Writing, not typing, reinforces the learning of the material. ▪ If there is no study guide, make one based on what the teacher says will be on the exam. Again, hand-written is best. ▪ If there is a textbook, review the questions at the end of the chapters that will be covered by the exam. Write out the answers. ▪ Go over the old tests if you have copies. Many teachers provide time in class for students to review the tests. If the material was important enough to be tested once, more than likely it will appear on the Final Exam, too. If the student missed a question, find the correct answer and write it out. ▪ By now you probably have noticed my theme: write out everything. The more a student writes a fact, the more likely the student is to remember it. When I took my Tests and Measurements class at UL, the professor drilled that into our heads. Combining the visual with the physical uses two of your senses. If the student reads it aloud (not silently) while writing, it engages a third sense and the learning is reinforced again. ▪ If your student is not enthusiastic about writing material out, the computer can be an alternative. No, typing the material is not what I am suggesting. Rather, using Quizlet or even a simple PowerPoint with questions and answers can help visual students review. Even better if you can add the spoken word to the PowerPoint. This is especially good for reviewing vocabulary – and there are vocab sections on just about every test, including math. ▪ There’s an old adage that students who REALLY learned, not memorized, for regular tests have little to review for exams. I agree, but everyone needs some review over the course of a semester’s worth of work. However, I’d add that students who review a little every week, simply by reading over the notes and organizing notebooks, do consistently better over the course of a semester and, consequently, on the Final Exam. It’s not too early to start now to review and the stress of a last-minute cram session will be avoided. 3 MAY, 2016 9th Grade - English I 10th Grade - English II 11th Grade - English III 12th Grade - English IV Choose one: Bluefish - Pat Schmatz The Age of Miracles - Karen Thompson Walker The Hiding Place - Corrie Ten Boom Gym Candy - Carl Deuker One novel of students' and parents' choice not previously read English II - Lexile score 800 (minimum) English III - Lexile score 850 (minimum) English IV - Lexile score 900 (minimum) www.lexile.com Appropriate content: www.arbookfinder.com (Collections tab) www.commonsensemedia.org 9th Grade - English I HONORS Choose one book from English I list PLUS Out of the Silent Planet - C.S.
