THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER FOR PARENTS OF TEURLINGS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS From Our Principal... W ow, woke up today and the temperature had dropped into the lower 60’s. What an awesome change. The summer tan lines have faded, cool weather is arriving, and the end of the first quarter of the school year looms near. Since the posting of progress reports we hope academic improvements have been made by those in need. This publication is one of the many ways we communicate important dates, thoughts and expectations to our school community. Teurlings Catholic will be on Fall Break on October 13-14 and I know the students are excited about not having classes those days. On October 14, we will hold a Parent-Teacher Conference day. All teachers will be in their classrooms from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. They will meet with parents to discuss first quarter grades of our students. This is a great opportunity for parents and teachers to communicate with each other and structure a format for success for each and every student. We have many opportunities to express our Catholic identity in October: Reconciliation and Spiritual Renewal Night on October 1, Pro-Life Rosary with the assistance of St. Genevieve Elementary on October 2, First Friday Adoration on October 3, Reconciliation October 8, 15, 22, and 29, Liturgies on October 9, 16, 23, Friday morning rosaries in the chapel at 7:15 a.m. and Homecoming Liturgy October 31. We invite parents to share these experiences with your children. Our School Resource Officer (SRO) Marty DeRoussel continues to bring a variety of talents to our campus. He was able to solve a burglary that happened on campus by using our video surveillance tapes along with the help of the SRO from Acadian Middle, arrests were made and property was returned. We will celebrate Homecoming 2014 the last week in October. Join us on Thursday, October 30, for a pep rally and bonfire. Our Homecoming Mass will be held at 9:05 a.m. on Friday, October 31. All alums are invited to attend the Alumni Social beginning at 6:00 p.m. Friday evening. Don’t forget, kickoff against the Westgate Tigers is 7:00 p.m. As a school, we work very hard to recognize and communicate the many wonderful and exciting achievements of our students. We also work very hard to have a safe, secure, and nurturing environment for our students and staff. This letter highlights several opportunities that parents have to receive information from and communicate with Teurlings Catholic. We hope you take advantage of these informational opportunities. PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES Tuesday, October 14 8:00 am - 2:00 pm 1st Quarter Report Cards will be available for viewing and printing on RenWeb at noon on Friday, October 10th. Parents will be emailed with directions on how to download the report card. If you plan to meet with teachers, please bring your student’s printed report card copy. Delinquent accounts will not have RenWeb access to report cards. If your tuition account is in arrears, contact Lisa Taylor in the Finance Office (Ext. 109). PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT PARENTS PLEASE READ A new drug mixture called "Gumbo" is the latest way that users are combining marijuana with other illicit substances to create a potentially lethal high. "Gumbo" is a marijuana cigar or "joint" with other ingredients including ecstasy, cocaine, or PCP. Based on the combination of drugs, the effects can leave users frozen or have the opposite effect and make them combative and unable to feel pain. However, Gumbo can potentially lead to strokes, heart attacks, or organ failure. It has become an increasing problem throughout Southeast Texas, where local Police are reporting that it has been the cause of several overdose deaths and violent crimes that have ravaged local communities. There have been reports of users "breaking out car windows, jumping onto moving cars, even several incidents where users have taken their families hostage." Gumbo can also be laced with synthetic marijuana which has been causing its own set of problems throughout the country. Synthetic marijuana typically consists of dried herbs sprayed with chemicals that simulate marijuana's effects for a legal "pot.” Some synthetic weed, formulated to be a barely legal chemical variation of cannabis, have been known to cause altered mental states, irregular heartbeats, and seizures. This past summer, a 17 year old male died as a result of first time use of synthetic marijuana. I urge you all to stay informed in the day to day happening of your children and please, let the staff here at Teurlings Catholic or me know if you hear any lingering rumblings about "Gumbo.” As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at school - 235-5711 (ext 100). Cpl Marty DeRoussel Lafayette Police Department Teurlings Catholic High School 2 OCTOBER, 2014 ACADEMICS Marty Heintz - Assistant Principal Standardized Testing th Please note that all 9 -10 graders will be taking the Aspire Test during school on Wednesday, October 15. In addition, juniors and honors sophomores have the opportunity to take the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test on Saturday, October 18. Students interested in the PSAT should sign up in the Guidance Office. Also, please note that all juniors will take the ACT Test here on our campus on Tuesday, March 17. More information on the junior ACT will be sent out in the early spring. The Aspire replaces the PLAN Test, which was administered in previous years and has been discontinued by ACT. In addition to the regular multiple choice questions students are used to answering on standardized tests, the new test also includes open-ended response questions in math, science, and reading. Students are asked to answer those questions in essay response form. The test includes a computer-based option and one 9th and one 10th grade homeroom is scheduled to take the computer test. Why is standardized testing important and how do we use the results? First Quarter Report Cards, Grades, and Parent/Teacher Conferences th The results tell us where our students stand when measured against state and national norms. The results help us make curriculum changes on our campus. At TCHS, we use the results of the Fall standardized testing, in the past the PLAN and now the Aspire, to determine eligibility for Honors courses. Universities will use the Aspire results to determine eligibility for dual enrollment classes. And, finally, the Aspire is a predictor of success on the ACT; students will be provided with a projected ACT score based on the Aspire score, pinpointing areas of weakness where the student can improve the ACT score. What can you, the parent, do to help your student score well? Let your student know that you expect him or her to do their best on test day. Tell them it is to their advantage to answer each question, even if he or she is not sure of the answer and to attempt to answer all the open-ended questions. However, it is not a good strategy to just bubble in answers without attempting to find the correct answer. Make sure your student is ready on testing day by eating a good breakfast and getting enough rest the night before. Have the right attitude. Standardized testing is important, but so are other aspects of the educational process. It is not the end of the world if the student does not score well – but encourage your student if that is the case to try and improve scores on future testing. Our first report cards of the school year will be official on Friday, October 10. You will be able to view, download and print the report card at 9 AM that day. As I am sure you know, we have our Fall Break for students on October 13-14, with Parent/Teacher Conferences on the calendar Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 8 AM to 2 PM. Our faculty members will be available to meet with you during those hours. I am often asked, “Is this mandatory?” and my answer is “no.” If you are satisfied with your student’s grades, you do not have to meet that day. However, everyone is welcome. I do strongly suggest and encourage you to attend if your student is struggling and that struggle was reflected on the report card with a grade of D or F. If you decide to attend, please bring a copy of the report card with you. We do not schedule appointment times so there may be a line when you visit, especially if you do so between 11:30-1:00 when many parents stop by on their lunch hour. We try to limit the visits to a maximum of 10 minutes, so that every concerned parent can meet with the teacher. If you cannot attend, feel free to email the teacher with your concerns and schedule a face-to-face if necessary at a later date. One last note on the subject of grades and report cards: obviously, if the student has an F in a subject, we have mutual concerns that need to be discussed. However, if your student, especially if that student is a freshman, is not quite doing as well as in previous years, don’t panic. Remember that first quarter grade reflects the first few weeks of school, when students are adjusting to a new routine, new teachers and a new school or school year. Sometimes the straight A elementary student, by virtue of all the activities, classes and, admittedly, often harder subjects and work, earns a B or even two or three. While I’d like all students to be perfect 4.0 students, I know that is not always possible. Please be realistic. If you and your student are happy and he or she is working up to potential and juggling a couple of sports and two or three additional extracurricular activities, then you have a good well-rounded student, even if there is a B or two on the report card. Finally, look at things optimistically – we have three-fourths of the school, year left so there is plenty of time left, with effort, to improve ANY grade, literally, any grade, from F to B to 94/A. A study plan, reordering of priorities, focused preparation – all can help. Our guidance counselors are there to help you formulate a plan if necessary. 3 OCTOBER, 2014 Homecoming Mass friday October 31 9:05 am—tch gym Bonfire & pep rally Thursday October 30 6:00 pm—tch gym Homecoming game Friday October 31 Kickoff—7:00 pm RABC IS IN NEED OF WHITE/ PEARL MARDI GRAS BEADS CONTACT MRS.
