You will motivate yourself and cooperate with your teacher to render lessons exciting and fun. And you can go much further after lessons on your free-time and evening activities. The NSTS animateurs are full of ideas and enthusiasm to give you a good and adrenalin- filled time. NSTS LIFESTYLE NSTS animateurs are very creative and committed to making your stay memorable to the extent that you immediately internationalise your experiences as you transmit your pictures and lifestyle relations to your friends back home. This commitment extends throughout your stay to provide you with no less than three daily activities, morning, afternoon, evening inclusive of lessons, cultural site visits, sports, sea faring or country exploring activities, entertainment and fun events. We encourage your maximum participation. However, depending upon your age you may feel the need to advise your animateur that you will be moving out with some friends instead of participating on an optional activity with the group. If you are enrolled on the “Kids English Camp” programme your parents can rest assured that you too will enjoy a stay full adventure suited to your age and that you will return home enthused and wanting to come back as your friendly, skilled and talented animateurs present you with exciting moments and give you a good and safe time. 16+ years If you are 16 years of age and over and are on the Teens English Adventure programme your included activities cover 17 events a week, leaving you free to choose your own activities on the other 5 occasions. You should always inform your animateur when you are not joining him/her on the organised event. 14-15 years If you are 14 or 15 years of age you are to join and participate in all events throughout the entire week, also seeking to attend the optional activities. Even if you form part of a school group you can fill your day with adventure and enjoyment during the games, outings, sports and events with your animateur and class mates while all the same you profit from your studies. Kids Students attending the Kids English Camp are to join and participate in all the 21 events specially organised for them and to be with their animateur as often as possible. School groups Your group leader too will recognise that you will learn more easily if you enjoy your lessons than if you do not. You will be expected to follow all the programme and share rooms as agreed at the time of booking with your group leader. Whatever programme you are following, the NSTS animateurs have the right dose of fun adventure set up for you as you may see from these few examples below: Ice-breakers are a series of fun and intelligent games with great movement and interactions among participants to break down the communication barriers normally prevalent among strangers and turn them into one big supportive group of friends. St Peter’s Big Splash is an afternoon of exhilarating jumps and dives from high edges into the crystal clear turquoise seas at St Peter’s Pool together with rival contests of different styles of jumps and bomb-splash effects. International Parties rally international students in Malta to mega parties with popular DJs and the latest tunes that get you off your feet for the rest of the evening. Life’s a Beach presents you the thrill of adrenalin-filled fast moving water-sports or smoother cruising water activities softened to sunbathing lazily on the beach. Foam parties are a delight as the dance floor and all who dance on it are engulfed by powerful jets of oozing soap foam that clings massively to the body, eventually turns wet and creates friendly commotions all around. NSTS Mini-Olympics challenge your sporting capabilities Karaoke Contest is another attempt for you to become the next Madonna or Lady Gaga as you grab the micro and sing your favourite tune to your disapproving audience Town Scavenger Hunt provides you with a daring orientation The Great Animation Show is when you are given the stage to act, sing, mime, play a musical instrument, dance, beat-box, perform martial arts and show off your talent and much more to suit all course types and ages by attuning the manner in which the event is organised and delivered. in field games, competitions, tournaments and team-building activities to give you the sportive cutting edge over your friends and proclaim you the outstanding winner before everyone. of your Malta home town to locate and collect a list of curiosities and strange items from the extended neighbourhood in a ‘beg, steal or borrow’ fashion and be the first to deliver them to the animateur. 6 Face Painting fascinates the younger Kids on Camp as an artistic animateur transforms faces to represent animals and motivates artistically talented kids to do likewise. www.nsts.org YOUR ARRIVAL AND FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL We greet you at the airport, present you with your Welcome Information Pack and transfer you to your accommodation. We also collect you and transfer you back to catch your departure flight. Your Welcome Pack will inform you of the weekend English Leisure Events you are to join, of your other scheduled activities and of your Monday morning transport pick-up place and time to go to school if you live in a family not close enough to walk to school. After a short break you proceed to class at 10:45 with learners of similar level till 13:00 when you go on your first activity. 1963/2013 English Juniors 7 PARENT AND CHILD CULTURAL EVENTS VERY YOUNG LEARNERS AND BEGINNERS NSTS launches this programme to combine the parents’ need for English lessons with their child’s need to study English from the young age of 6 years. A young teacher trained to teach beginners at the delicate age of 6 to 9 years provides motivational lessons through language games, drawing, singing, acting, painting and other imaginative features that encourage the child to speak English. Teaching is adapted to older kids when no Kids’ English Camp or Teens English Adventure Course is operative. This course may be followed by two or three children of similar level of English together. CHARMING GOZO attracts many visitors because of its simplicity, rural lifestyle, and natural scenic beauty. It offers many historical sites including the fortified Cittadella that dominates the central hilltop and watches over the capital Rabat. Further away along the coast are the fishing villages of Xlendi, Marsalforn and Dwejra with its picturesque Azure Window and Fungus Rock. Gozo serves the visitor more of an inspiration than an education but is certainly worth a visit. At the same time the parent follows an adult course in any of General, Business, Academic or Specific Purpose English available on the NSTS English Adult brochure and keeps a close enough eye on the child/children. Accommodation is at the NSTS Residence, at a host family, hotel or, upon request in an apartment. Availability: All year round Duration: from 1 week Entry levels: Child: A1/Beginners Parent: see adult course conditions Class lessons/week: 20 x 45 minutes over 5 mornings/afternoons Av/Max Learners in Class: Child: 1/3 when booking together ANCIENT MDINA AND ANTIQUITIES takes you back to Roman times, the advent of St Paul in 60AD, and the Roman Catacombs, before projecting you to some 800 years later when the Arabs resized the city into a much smaller Mdina and its newly formed suburb, Rabat. Most of Mdina was again rebuilt in baroque style after the earthquake of 1693. You will experience these three different historic phases on this highly educational excursion and learn more at the interesting re-enactment attractions. THE THREE MEDIEVAL CITIES BY THE HARBOUR were home to Malta’s sailors centuries before the arrival of the Knights with the more historic of the three, Vittoriosa, being protected by the imposing Fort St Angelo. On their arrival the Knights rebuilt an area called the Collachio with many new palaces and winding narrow streets which you will explore as you walk to the Inquisitor’s Palace before crossing the harbour by Dghajsa to reach Senglea and the Gardolja watching over the mouth of the Harbour. THE TRADITIONAL FARMING, FISHING AND BUILDING VILLAGES OF THE SOUTH present you with Malta’s traditional and simple peasant, fisherman and mason’s life. You will meet the villagers and explore their houses, buildings and church before you set out to the nearby small fields and rubble walls to meet the farmers at work. You will learn about the traditional stone mason’s trade at an old natural stone quarry which now houses The Limestone Heritage and then go to a fishing village to face life at sea and touch the colourful Maltese fishing boats - Luzzu. THE CAPITAL CITY OF VALLETTA was built as a highly fortified city with many magnificent palaces and churches and a stupendous Co-Cathedral that show the great power and wealth of the Knights of Malta. You will admire the architectural beauty as you walk the streets and climb up to the upper Barrakka Gardens for a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour and its defences. You will attend the audio-visual show “The Malta Experience” of Malta’s great past and re-live the power of the mighty battlements. Each day long excursion is led by an animateur who discusses the sites and asks you for information and your opinion. Entry to museums, attractions and places of interest against a charge are at your discretion if not included at time of booking. 8 www.nsts.org Parent: see adult course conditions Accommodation: NSTS Residence, host family, hotel, apartment Airport transfers & programme supervision: not included KIDS ENGLISH CAMP NSTS young, creative and trained teachers patiently stimulate the Kids to make use of the wealth of English learnt at school. More excitement follows during your drama lessons when you act your own script before your class, or stage a media event. Your class learning process flows out seamlessly into your activities led by trained animateurs as you speak about the beauty and riches of places like Valletta, Mdina, The Three Medieval Cities, the villages of the South, the Limestone Heritage, Dingli Cliffs, Gozo, and more. Many school teachers organise educational school trips during the scholastic year to provide their students with a better notion of European integration and job mobility. Malta has become a popular European destination for such school trips, mainly because it is English speaking, its pervading British influence over its natural Euro-Mediterranean culture, its 7 millennia of history, the friendliness and hospitality of its people, its safety and security besides offering a youthful environment for students. NSTS has become popular among school teachers because of its caring attention to detail, its commitment to the educational needs of students, its unfailing support and assistance, its resourcefulness and flexibility, its abundance of ideas and ability to organise events, its central role to make every stay pleasant and successful. Accommodation includes a town orientation walk, assistance of an animateur on three half-days for the organisation of activities, parties or events, and airport transfers on arrival and departure and may be availed of in the NSTS School Residence with leisure lounge and facilities for school groups or at host families. CULTURAL IMMERSION INTO ENGLISH ENGLISH FOR MY FIRST JOB & WORK TRAINING GENERAL ENGLISH SPEAKING PRACTICE The school group gains a double advantage: English and a cultural awareness of Malta’s unrivalled history. Although small in size Malta boasts of the first ever known free standing monuments built by mysterious prehistoric man 7,000 years ago and of the first ever collective seat of European rulers within the European Union founded by the Knights of Malta. Directed at older students who are about to leave school or who attend a vocational college, this course, in the morning or afternoon depending upon budget, presents topics related to job prospects for discussion in English, such as writing a Europass CV and covering letter, a resume’, a business letter, dealing with English e-mails and the internet, an introduction to corporate culture in an English or international office, and the English skills needed to be successful on the job. Equipped with a good level of spoken English, you proceed to a select 20 hour work placement that provides first hand training in a job away from home. This is the classical stay for a school group: 20 lessons of English conversation practice in the morning or afternoon according to budget, free-time included activities in sports, nature, drama, music, art, optional cultural site seeing visits to historical places (sample on page 8) and more to gain as much as possible from this educational experience. The teacher may reserve fewer lessons and more siteseeing opportunities including visits to factories, industries, offices and the hospitality industry and may request that lessons be conducted on a particular theme of interest to serve as a project to take back to school. NSTS offers you 2 different types of accommodation: the traditional Homestay/Host Family and Student Residences for collective living. Participants on the Parent and Child arrangement may opt for a hotel or selfcatering apartment as available on the Adult brochure. Living at a Host family has the advantage of living in a small community of maximum 4 students and being cared for by the host mother while at a Student Residence you live collectively. Each of the 2 different residences on offer has its own leisure, animation and games room specially dedicated to students on these programmes. It is here where you meet friends, play games, watch DVD or TV, socialise and enjoy yourself during your idle time. This room doubles up as the organised activities room in the residence when events like The Great Animation Show is on. In short it is your indoor hub. Upon checking-in at a Residence, you will need to place a refundable deposit €50 against damages or misdeeds. HOMESTAY/ HOST FAMILY This accommodation arrangement is a preferred option of many parents who seek protection and care for their children within the embrace of a host family. NSTS RESIDENCE – BELLA VISTA HOTEL RESORT This 4 star hotel resort has been selected for you because of its prime location, opposite an expanse of green and a national park ideal for activities and its proximity to the beach, in addition to its friendly and caring management always willing to ensure that you and your friends are comfortable. The hotel boasts of a good buffet style restaurant with a variety of dishes at each meal, a swimming pool and sun terrace, lounges and common rooms in addition to the NSTS leisure and animation room. The hotel dedicates specific wings and floors of bedrooms to host NSTS students separately from other guests. These have well-appointed bedrooms with private ensuite bathroom and airconditioning. The 3 and 4 bedded rooms are uniquely priced while a few 2 bedded rooms are available at a supplement. NSTS officials personally visit and interview each family before selection and keep regular contact to ensure the care and safety of junior students, even though the parents retain responsibility for the actions and omissions of their children while living at the host family. This however, offers parents comfort in the knowledge that their children are in safe hands while the children receive the attention due to them. NSTS RESIDENCE – CAMPUS This is a new addition to the NSTS managed student residences and hostels with one whole wing specifically designed with safety features and animation area to receive junior students under the age of 18 years. As a new addition it sports many modern minimalist features and abounds in an array of corporate bright colours that give it a young and cheerful look. It is strategically located in Msida some 800 meters beyond the boundary of the seaside town of Sliema overlooking the University of Malta sports grounds and national Olympic size open-air heated swimming pool. It consequently enjoys a considerable expanse of open ground and fresh air that lead to the NSTSEnglish Language Institute some 700 metres away. This entire wing, the Yellow Wing, comprises 5 bedded rooms, 4 beds of which in an original duplex form, each room with a private shower and toilet en-suite, or located in the corridor. These rooms are complemented by single or twin bedded rooms on each floor which are reserved for group leaders. Junior students on these programmes are accommodated on either half-board or full-board. Students are accommodated in 2 or 3 bedded rooms and share facilities on a full-board basis that includes a packed lunch. They are expected to integrate, respect their hosts and dedicate time speaking to the family, particularly at meal-times, as well as give a helping hand in keeping their room and bathroom clean and tidy. Laundry facilities are included and available upon request. Families are located in various areas around the school within a radius of some 2 kilometers. During peak seasons when the more distant families are in use, NSTS organises dedicated transport to ferry students to the school and back close to home after organised evening activities. BELLA VISTA HOTEL 14 www.nsts.org NSTS CAMPUS RESIDENCE 1963/2013 English Juniors 15 GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMES UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION IN ENGLISH AND BUSINESS STUDIES NSTS–International Academy is the brand that provides general education programmes in Malta on an international level and invites students to follow a general course of studies within the English speaking environment of Malta. The British introduced their system of education close to a century ago which is followed to this very day. Malta therefore offers the 5 year high school system followed by 2 years of senior high school to gain entry to a university. Teaching in the main is through English even if Malta’s national language is Maltese and international students may join any grade from age 11 years upwards. NSTS – International Academy also offers the American system of education at further and higher levels that lead to qualifications at level to 5, pre-university, and level 6, bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Students must have a sufficiently high level of spoken English at a minimum of IELTS 5.0 or its equivalent to join the class with profit and not disturb other students. This twoin-one formula gives you the advantage of saving one full year in time and money. With your certificates you directly join the first year undergraduate degree course in Business Management at one of many English speaking universities worldwide. Your teacher will help you apply to join a course at any of these universities that offer you this outstanding advantage. The course starts in the first semester with intensive general English lessons in the four language skills, grammar and vocabulary to bring you up to speed in your knowledge of English when it branches out to prepare you for your two important examinations.
