Ka‘ū Chamber Awards Scholarships to Writers
Every year, the annual Ka‘ū Chamber of Commerce Essay Competition awards scholarships through income
from this publication, The Ka‘ū Directory. This year’s First Place winner is Kayla Andrade, of Nā‘ālehu, who
graduated from Kamehameha Schools and attends University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Second place went to
Annie Mae Flores, also of Nā‘ālehu. She graduated from Ka‘ū High School and is attending Kapi‘olani College
on O‘ahu. Additional scholarships were awarded to Layla Abellera, Melani Bautista, Kasey Camba, Johngilbert Gorali, Jadelyn Kekoa, Rochelle Koi, Kiana Pascubillo, Tiare-Lee Shibuya, Mahealani Taganas and Tyler
Navarro-Villa. Scholarship deadline is March 1, 2013. Here are two of the winning essays.
Taking Care of Business: Ka‘ü Style
by Kayla Andrade
Our world is changing, advancing, becoming more in sync with technology and the most beneficial
thing to do is to change with it. Over the years, Ka‘ū has gone through many changes and it seems as if our
community has adapted to it, but it’s important to use these changes to our advantage. Even though Ka‘ū is
very secluded, it’s sometimes hard for families to make ends meet because of such a demanding economy.
I believe that supporting local businesses plays an immense role in our society that fuels the wellbeing of
common families that survive off their family owned businesses. These local businesses that are passed
down to each generation help perpetuate the different aspects of culture, language, and history in order to
attain sustainability if and when the barge stops sailing to Hawai‘i. Without our state’s main export system,
only those who are culturally connected and aware of their handy resources will survive.
Opening new businesses such as hotels is very controversial here in Ka‘ū because it is one of the few places that hasn’t been influenced by big business and is known to be very rural. I am well aware of the push for
preserving Ka‘ū ‘s natural beauty and cultural sites that hold value and history, but tourists will be coming in
and out of Ka‘ū to experience its beauty whether we like it or not. Therefore, I want to be a type of facilitator
to these newcomers and teach them to be culturally sensitive. If these people who come here are willing to
learn about the culture and the history, then it’s only sensible to teach them correctly. This approach serves
as a type of preservation as they carry on what they have learned and also share it with others. At the same

The Directory is published annually by the Ka‘ū Chamber of Commerce to promote
progress and business development in all of Ka‘ū.

From the President
Aloha and welcome to the 2013 Ka‘ū Directory.
Ka‘ū has survived another year, and is still not
defeated. Ka‘ū was never conquered, and even this
year was not enough to do it. Through earthquakes,
tsunamis, drought, continuing recession, and vog
we are still unbowed. Businesses in Ka‘ū are still
here, and we even have some new ones.
Ka‘ū Coffee keeps winning medals and friends
all over the world. After more than 50 years, Ocean
View has a fresh water supply, albeit in a limited
and restrictive sort of way. New families are moving
in, and new homes are being built. Since we live
in the most beautiful place on earth, that makes
good sense. It is the mission of the Ka‘ū Chamber
of Commerce to make life even better in this part of
paradise. Our Art Show honors and showcases our
artists, and our Ken Wicks Memorial Scholarships
help our young people to go away to be educated,
learning professions and skills to bring back to
Ka‘ū. We will continue to try to make it easier for
businesses to do business in Ka‘ū.
And speaking of business, our only income is the
Ka‘ū Directory. We are continually trying to make it
better and an even greater bargain for our members
and advertisers. We are getting closer and closer
to our desired distribution date of Jan. 1 each year.
In order to do that, membership dues and ad fees
need to be in on time, preferably the first of October,
2013, for the 2014 edition.
Our pledge to you is that we will continue to try
to make life and business better in Ka‘ū. And we also
pledge to give everything we possibly can to our
students, that their lives and educations may be the
best possible, and that life for all in Ka‘ū may be even
better.
Yours, for an even greater Ka‘ū future,
Dallas Decker, President,
Ka‘ū Chamber of
Commerce

Scholarship Essay, cont. from pg. 2
time, many jobs will be available for the people of Ka‘ū as new businesses open.
Though I am not exact on what I want to pursue, I believe that going into business would aide me in trying to improve our society. The business field is such a versatile and relatable academy because all types of
occupations somehow involve business. Living in this ever-advancing era, we need to play to their strengths
instead of fighting the system. For example, I know many successful local businesses that not only benefit
themselves, but also their own culture that they practice on a daily basis.
Being from such a small town, perseverance is key because it is easy to just settle with what you’ve got
when there are so much more opportunities available. If I am fortunate enough to get this scholarship, I
will invest it toward a Degree in Business Management at University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa whose business
program is ranked in the top 25. Eventually, I would like to return to Ka‘ū and use my knowledge to help
start up other businesses and encourage existing local businesses in our community. I am so blessed to have
been raised in Ka‘ū’s close knit community. When we develop a well-oiled system that suffices everyone,
there won’t be any worry about making it in this world. Then we will be able to focus on the more comforting aspects of being a community. The initial goal is to change with the world, but hold on to our roots and
maintain a stable foundation.
Ka‘ü? Where’s That?
by Annie Mae Flores
Ka‘ū? Where’s that!?” I remember hearing those words when I went to a conference meeting in O‘ahu.
When others asked me where I was from, I told them that I was from Ka‘ū. It was surprising to hear that they
didn‘t know where Ka‘ū was, or that it was even located on Hawai‘i. Not everyone is familiar with the towns
located here because of how small the place is. Ka‘ū doesn’t have much when it comes to things such as
shops, marts, etc. Jobs are scarce and businesses keep closing down because customers are scarce. The closest Wal-Mart here is seventy miles away forcing people to drive in and out of town to get groceries and such.
I have always wanted to give back to my community and help out with things that we are lacking like, for
example, more jobs. I want to help my community get more local businesses running so that people will get
the chance to work for their own money and also so that people won’t have to deal with driving back and
forth just to get food to feed their families. Not only is the drive a grueling task, but because of the constant

Paniolo Farms
Nā‘ālehu Main Street (a local 501 c 3)
bought an acre of land from the Roman
Catholic Church on a beautiful hillside on
Kamaoa Road about 1.7 miles from Hwy 11.
On this historical church site, they planted
over 118 Native Hawaiian plants, which
include “canoe plants,” medicinal and
edible fruits and herbs.
Each month volunteers meet to learn
about historic plants, proper care and
propagaton. After the session,everyone
joins in a free brunch and talks story.
Once a month, guest speakers
offer seminars, workshops and sharing
information.
Recently, they built a covered pavilion
with kitchen and flushing toilets with hot
and cold water.
The garden is still a work in progress.
Please come and join us. For more
information, call 345-9374 or email

The rugged Ka‘ū Coast is the target of preservation efforts for more than 80 miles.

Scholarship Essay, cont. from pg. 36
change of gas prices, traveling so far by car takes a toll on the wallet.
Another thing that I would also like to help my community with is to make programs for young adults
to keep busy and be able to go to an afterschool program. Schools here have after school programs but only
for younger kids. Teens have the option to join an extracurricular activity like sports. But not everyone is an
athlete or is good in sports. Besides athletics, there isn’t really anything else to keep young adults occupied
which leads them to doing things they shouldn’t be doing like drugs or alcohol. If kids were to stay busy,
these things wouldn’t be as big of a problem. A year ago, I joined a program called the Summer Youth Program that enabled young adults to work after school.
Although it was only for three short months, the students enjoyed working and getting their own money
and stayed out of trouble. In the future, I hope to set up a program like that; a program that will give teens
the chance to make something of their selves and to learn how to be mature, young individuals. I know it’ll
be difficult, but for the sake of the future generation of Ka‘ū, I am willing to do all that I can to achieve this
dream.
To make a difference, you need to first start with a good education. I hope that I will be granted the Ka‘ū
Chamber of Commerce Ken Wicks Memorial Scholarship to make that difference.

Ka‘ū Chamber of Commerce Sponsors Ka‘ū Scenic Byway
Ka‘ū Scenic Byway is an initiative of the Ka‘ū
Chamber of Commerce with guidance from the
Hawai‘i Department of Transportation. In 2010, the
Chamber established a committee
chaired by Marge Elwell, and its
efforts were rewarded in 2011 with
the designation of a Hawai‘i State
Scenic Byway.
The western slopes of Mauna
Loa, from Manukā State Park to
Kahuku Unit of Hawai‘i Volcanoes
National Park, feature a forest reserve and broad vistas with sweeping views of the ocean and mountain. This section
passes over relatively new lava so the traveler can
experience transitions from substantially untouched
to well vegetated volcanic terrain and rain forest.
The southern slopes from Kahuku to the county
park at Honu‘apo Bay include the green segment
that winds into Wai‘ōhinu Valley then down toward
the ocean, with a panorama that may extend to a
distant view of Kīlauea Volcano.
The eastern slopes cover the area from Honu‘apo
to the main entrance to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National
Park and offer long, sweeping, green views toward
Mauna Loa’s summit as well as the spectacular and
unusual Ninole Hills.
The road rises from sea level to over 4,000 feet and
is partly within the boundary of Hawai‘i Volcanoes
National Park. Ka‘ū Scenic Byway offers by far the
longest stretches of unspoiled natural scenery to be
found anywhere in the inhabited Hawaiian Islands.
A local committee is working on the project to
develop interpretive signage, Web-based information on Ka‘ū and other aspects of the way Ka‘ū is
presented to travelers along the main thoroughfare
through the district. Also providing support is U.S.
Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway
Administration.
The theme chosen for the byway through Ka‘ū is The Slopes
of Mauna Loa. With community
volunteers coordinated through
Ka‘ū Chamber of Commerce, planners are helping residents come up
with a Community Management
Plan. Planning documents say the
plans are “sensitive to local needs,
qualities, culture, institutions and
opportunities and unique to each byway.” It can
recommend capital improvements, investments and

design consideration. It can define how funding and
other assistance should be used to “protect, maintain and enhance the intrinsic qualities of the scenic
byway and to promote appropriate highway design,
roadway management and maintenance, land use
and economic benefits within the corridor.”
Professional planners and community volunteers
are making an inventory along Hwy 11 of qualities
and characteristics that the community wants to
document. These could include historic features,
archaeological sites, dilapidated structures, meandering alignment of the roadway, junk, graffiti and
litter, panoramic views and places of interest having
to do with wildlife. Information gathered about sites
along the highway could be put into an online data-
ier extending to Punalu‘u.

people helping, from making lei for horses and riders, to tree trimming at the Pāhala manager’s house

soup and bread. Japanese ladies got up at 4 a.m. to
make sushi and worked on their paper crafts during the event. Filipino and Chinese history displays,

cattle operations, some of them producing freerange beef for world-class restaurants and for sale

Plantation Days was held in 2011 and 2012 to celebrate the cultural diversity of Ka‘ū that stems from
an agricultural heritage which has evolved into production of the famous Ka‘ū Coffee, tea, vegetables

Sen Dan Inouye's last visit to Ka‘ū was on Aug. 29 to celebrate the cirulation of a new Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park coin with U.S. Mint representative
David Croft and park superintendent Cindy Orlando. Photo by Jay Robinson, National Park Service
Inouye: ‘Very Vigilant in Setting Aside That Which Must Be Protected’
Sen. Daniel Inouye ended a career of representing Hawai‘i for more than 50 years in Washington, D.C. when he
succumbed to a respiratory illness on Dec. 17, 2012 at the age of 88. The senator’s last visit to Ka‘ū was on Aug. 29,
2012, when he helped to roll out circulation of a new U.S. quarter depicting Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Inouye
was a good friend to the National Park Service, particularly in Ka‘ū, said HVNP Superintendent Cindy Orlando.
Inouye helped to secure funding for the 117,000-acre new Kahuku Unit of the National Park, with its entry along
Hwy 11 between South Point Road and Ocean View. He also championed efforts to preserve
the Ka‘ū Coast. During the Kahuku dedication ceremony, he said, “As the urban sprawl continues to spread beyond O‘ahu and into our Neighbor Islands, I think all of us will agree that
we must be very vigilant in setting aside that which must be protected.”
Inouye became the thirty-first person in history and first dignitary since Pres. Gerald Ford
to lie in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol where Congress and the public bid a final
aloha to the man who was the U.S. Senate’s second-longest serving member. As President
of the Senate Pro Tempore, Inouye was third in line for the U.S. Presidency, in the absence
of Pres. Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Speaker of the House John Boehner.
Speaking in the Rotunda, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, “Dan Inouye was an
institution, and he deserves to spend at least another day in this beautiful building in which
he dedicated his life to represent the 50th state from the first day Hawai‘i was admitted into
the union.”
A memorial service was also conducted in the National Cathedral. Inouye lay in state at
the Hawai‘i’s State Capitol and was honored with a military service at the National Cemetery The Hawai‘i Volcanoes coin

of the Pacific at Punchbowl on O‘ahu. A service was also held at the Civic Center in Hilo.
Vickers.
Vice President Joe Biden said Inouye lived
his life showing “physical and moral courage,” noting his heroic efforts in World War II when he lost an arm fighting with the famed
442nd Regiment, comprised of Japanese-Americans. “I never met
a man with as much loyalty to his country, to his family, and to his
friends,” said Biden, noting that the senator lacked cynicism even
though he suffered “the sting of prejudice” and from his injuries. Gov.
Neil Abercrombie appointed 40-year-old Brian Schatz to Inouye's vaNew Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park quarters on a
cant seat on Dec. 26, and Schatz left for Washington, D.C. with Pres.
ceremonial imu platter.
