This relatively recent advancement is remarkable and so pervasive that – around here – we take our clean water for granted. We wash our cars and sprinkle our lawns with drinking water. Every day, we each flush about 18 gallons of it down the toilet. One out of every six gallons of clean water coursing through the aging municipal water system(s) leaks into the ground. Out West and in other parts of the world, people think and act different than we do – when it comes to clean water. I saw a TED talk the other day that made an even more David DeCamp dramatic point about electricity. The speaker held a light bulb in one hand and in the other a jar containing the amount of coal needed to run that bulb for a year. Then he had an assistant bring out a wheel barrow full of coal to show how much coal we actually burn over the course of a year in order to light a single bulb. His point: 90% of the energy produced in our power plants bleeds off (mostly as heat) before it ever reaches the lamp next to your bed. Then we compound the problem by leaving lights on, cooling houses even when we aren’t home and persisting with a dozen other bad habits. CHAIR’S MESSAGE CORPORATE SPONSORS CHAIR’S MESSAGE Sure – we have heard this speech before. We can and should do better. Imagine if we actually did. I am seeing hopeful signs. Now-a-days in the building business, we routinely aim for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) or Energy Star certification. Our customers want it. Our competitors are all doing it. As the built environment in Arlington is expanded and renovated over time we are making steady progress. The County Board recently passed a Community Energy Plan with a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75% while improving Arlington’s economic competitiveness and energy security. These are lofty long-term goals. VOL. LV, NO. 9 SEPTEMBER 2013 ‑ Here are some tangible ways that may help us get there: The Purple Pipe: Reclaimed, non-drinkable water is used regularly in other parts of the country and around the world for irrigation, cleaning and other worthy purposes. The recognized conduit for this water is the purple pipe. Even if we don’t have a water shortage, this innovation saves money and energy. Low Flow or No Flow Plumbing Fixtures: I used to think they were gross. I was wrong. Behavioral Science: Showing people how their energy use compares to their neighbor’s energy use modifies behavior. Texting energy customers with an offer to take $10 off their next bill if they agree to make sure their AC at home is barely running while they are at work on a super-hot, peak-load day actually works. There is an innovative company in Arlington interacting directly with utility customers around the world. As a result, these utility customers are now personally engaged in the patterns and performance of their own energy usage. Some people can now monitor and control major elements of their home’s energy consumption using a smart phone app. They are saving money and using a lot less energy. Natural Gas Fuel Cells: I have been talking about Arlington with a Texas company that builds houses powered by a natural gas fuel cell. The fuel cell is extremely efficient and about the size of a residential air conditioning compressor. This miniature power plant generates all of the electricity needed to run the house plus additional electricity that is sold back to the “grid”. At current prices, the electricity sold back to the grid would cover the monthly gas bill. The heat created by the fuel cell is captured and can also be used in the house (e.g. radiant floor heat). And that “act of saving”, if it is real, can be a viable business. I met a guy at the Arlington Home Show, who explained his electric car as follows: He spends 4 cents a mile on the electricity to charge his car. That’s $1 for 25 miles. Most of us are spending $4 for a gallon of gasoline that almost gets us 25 miles. The inaugural event featured Nick Ruscio, the Vice President of Internal Audit at BAE Systems, Inc. Led by the Arlington County Office of Emergency Management, National Preparedness Month 2013 will encourage Arlingtonians to take important preparedness steps that will greatly improve their ability to survive and recover from all types of emergencies, whether natural or man-made. We’ve seen it time and time again – most recently during Derecho and Superstorm Sandy - disasters not only devastate individuals and neighborhoods, but entire communities, including businesses of all sizes. As an employer in your community, having a business continuity plan can help protect your company, its employees, and its infrastructure, and maximizes your chances of recovery after an emergency or disaster. Now in its second year, Venture Camp events have been a forum for convergence around new ideas in entrepreneurship, featuring renowned hotshots, nationally-recognized speakers and cutting-edge companies from around the region. The seasonal series has attracted hundreds of entrepreneurs, investors, students, young professionals and numerous others looking to inject a little innovation into their lives, companies and organizations. Venture Camp is presented by the George Mason Center for Social Entrepreneurship and sponsored by Arlington Economic Development and Amplifier Ventures. Venture Camp kicked off its three-week Summer 2013 series earlier in August with “Women in Entrepreneurship,” featuring leading female entrepreneurs in the region discussing the unique challenges women face when starting and maintaining a successful business. Led by moderator Dana Taylor of Intelligent Ethos, the conversation featured Paul Singh of 500 Startups and several leading women entrepreneurs in the region. The next series installment discussed “Immigration and Entrepreneurship,” a lively discussion focusing on immigrant entrepreneurial spirit and the implications of immigration reform for entrepreneurs. The panel included several immigrant entrepreneurs who have truly found the “American Dream,” the panel discussed how these entrepreneurs found success, the opportunities our country has to offer and insight on possible immigration reforms. The 2013 Summer Venture Camp series wrapped up with a unique demonstration and discussion around the world of “Wearable Computing,” discussing not only the muchanticipated Google Glass, but other technologies on the horizon that are certain to change how we use and process mobile devices.
