Built over a period of twenty years, between 1861 and 1881, it is the product of two of New York’s most prominent nineteenth-century architects, John Kellum and Leopold Eidlitz. The feasibility study for this project was undertaken in 1989; however, construction did not begin until 1999. The restoration project, which encompasses all aspects of interior and exterior renovation, was begun in 1999. A period of two and one-half years was given for completion. Jury Comments: This is a monumental example of restoration involving years of planning and execution. Stone was brought in from literally all over the world with thousands of pieces of stone having to be replaced and/or carved. Structural problems needed to be correct as well. It is truly an example of stone restoration work at its finest.
