Stone Carving Kit ProjeCtS
Stone Carving Kit Projects © 2016 The stone enclosed in your kit is soft and can be carved, whittled and/or rasped by hand with the tools in your kit. Is is a piece of soapstone, one of the primary carving stones. They all carve and polish easily. OWL Draw a template of the front and side views of your owl on a piece of paper. Copy this drawing directly onto the stone of your choice with a pen or artist’s pencil. (Figure 1). Using one of the two rasps or carving knife, remove excess stone outside your drawn owl. Continue to carve and rasp until your owl is to your liking (Figures 2 - 3). (Figure 1) (Figure 2) (Figure 3) Stone Carving Kit Projects © 2016 OWL (cont’d) As with the cardholder, finish your owl by smoothing and polishing with the wet and dry sheets and polishing oil as desired (Figures 4-5). Sometimes an interesting stone affect is to leave portions of your stone roughly rasped or dully sanded rather than polished to a high gloss. Figure 4 Figure 5 BUSINESS CARD HOLDER Take a rectangular piece of stone and score a straight line (make a notch) in a section of the stone that will cradle the business cards (Figure 6). Using the carving knife or a rasp, expand your notch to a depth that will accommodate your cards (Figure 7). Figure 6 Figure 7 Stone Carving Kit Projects © 2016 BUSINESS CARD HOLDER (cont’d) Continue carving the notch with a rasp and/or knife until the proper depth has been achieved (Figure 8). Polish the entire piece stone with the wet and dry sheets and polishing oil (Figure 9). (You can even carve a decoration or design into the cardholder if you’d like using any of the tools.) Congratulations .... you’ve carved a beautiful business cardholder (Figure 10). Figure 8 Figure 9 Figure 10 TIPS Wear your dust mask while you carve, rasp and sand for your safety. You can see the true color of your stone by dampening it. So keep a damp soft cloth or towel handy so you can check the color of your stone while working with it. You can always easily polish alabaster and soapstone with a soft clean cloth after finishing with your wet and dry sheets. 3804 Crossroads Parkway, Fort Pierce, FL 34945 Ph: 772-210-6124 Fax: 844-287-5044 SculptureHouse.com
