SHARING SUCCESS Double A, Thailand Double A (1991) Public Company Limited is a leading pulp and paper maker in Thailand. Double A chose Pöyry as its partner to design and manage its third paper mill project. CLIENT & ASSIGNMENT In a move to further strengthen its capacity in pulp and paper – in one of the fastest growing markets in the world – Double A decided to invest in a third paper mill. Double A chose Pöyry as its partner to design and manage the project. LOCATION Thatoom, Prachinburi, Thailand SCOPE The new UWF paper mill was built at a brownfield site, located near Double A’s existing mills. In addition to project management and co-ordination, Pöyry’s tasks included basic and detail engineering for the new paper machine and stock preparation, and supervising the installation and start-up phases of the new paper machine line. TIME January 2011 to October 2012 BACKGROUND Double A purchased the new paper machine from PMT Group and began working on the project in late 2010. In early 2011, Pöyry was brought on to take the lead in engineering management, scheduling, standards, detail engineeing and overall process control– as well as providing support for commissioning and start-up. Pöyry, having previously carried out numerous projects similar in size and scope, was able to utilise its technical know-how and expertise to manage the design phase, specify auxiliary equipment for procurement and perform the detailed design. CHALLENGES With a strict scope, timetable and budget set right from the start, the challenge was clear: Pöyry needed to deliver top-notch technical support to ensure that the productivity and quality targets for the mill were met. SOLUTIONS To keep the project on schedule and ensure timely delivery of machinery and equipment, Pöyry took an active role in procurement and project planning. Step-by-step throughout the project, regular meetings were held between Pöyry and Double A to ensure timely and reasonable progress. Pöyry’s global resource base was used efficiently and brought benefits to the project. For example, while the unit in Vantaa, Finland, worked on standards and calculations, the unit in China designed layouts, process flowsheets and detailed 3D-models. A qualified designer from Pöyry China was available on-site to make necessary 3D modelling modifications. All this contributed to clear, cost-effective progress. BENEFITS From the beginning, Pöyry and Double A paid special attention to planning and scheduling – a move that ensured smooth “We received significant benefits from Pöyry’s past experience executing similar projects. Besides ensuring that everything went ahead as planned, they shared their know-how and experience when it came to dealing with paper machine manufacturers and setting up mills” , Double A, PM3 Project Manager. PRACHINBURI Bangkok progress, quick execution and a timely start up. Planning and procurement scheduling and utilising resources cost-effectively were critical success factors in keeping within the set budget. Pöyry’s advanced technology further contributed to the project’s smooth execution. For example, 3D walk-through modelling accurately visualised the plant’s layout, adding clarity and saving valuable time, and DocHotel, a project-specific database that provided access to the latest project information at all times. SUCCESS FACTORS Throughout the project, Pöyry’s project team kept things on track. They were quick to identify and respond to even the slightest challenges in engineering design or production processes. There was always an experienced Pöyry specialist available for each discipline, which meant daily tasks could be organised efficiently. This was further enhanced by seamless co-operation between the client’s production team and Pöyry’s project team. As the building phase came to an end, Pöyry provided support for the commissioning and start-up phases. This en-sured a fast ramp-up of operations and quick positive cash flow for Double A. “Pöyry’s team read the situation well and were able to step back and see the big picture. They tightened the screws when required but also gave us a bit of breathing room when things were running smoothly”, Double A, PM3 Project Manager. A new UWF-paper mill (cut-size) built on an existing mill-site. PAPER MACHINE • production capacity 220 000 t/a • trim after winder 5200 mm • design speed 1400 m/min GRADE • UWF-paper (cut-size) in the grammage range 70-90 g/m2 RAW MATERIAL • 100 % bleached eucalyptus hardwood pulp from “KHAN-NA” and filler. • Khan-na is the production of sustainable fiber through cultivation of Double A Paper-Tree, a hybrid species of hardwood which is well adopted to Thailand’s tropical climate. It’s grown in straight rows along “Khan-Na”, the unused space between rice paddies. • This way of growing trees addresses social issues faced by Thai farmers such as the difficulty of finding agricultural employment during off- peak season and the instability of income from planting cash crops.
