There are over 17,000 different species of endangered animals. As we use more paper, wood, land, we are taking away and wasting more and more animal’s habitats. Polluting the water kills more fish, taking away land kills animals, and polluting air kills birds. Help these animals! Writing a letter to farmers to ask them to let in barn owls is a good step. Ask them to stop cutting down trees, which takes away the animals habitats, Oh No! Something else you could do is to donate supplies to the local zoo. Doing so will help to take care of animals in need, like the panda bear! Although many other animals will be taken care of, not just panda bears. Depending on what you donate, a certain animal will get it. We need animals; they help us in many ways. You can start saving them today! A Perfect Motto: Care, Adopt, Love! By Gabriella Ferenchik I interviewed Suzanne Muth, 42, a regular volunteer @ the Animal rescue League of Pittsburgh. 1) What do you do @ ARL? I am a volunteer who works with the rabbits. I take all phone and email inquiries from potential rabbit adopters that come in to the shelter. I help to socialize the rabbits, clean their crates, bring in vegetables, find fosters when the shelter is overcrowded and I handle all of the rabbit adoptions. 2) Why did you choose to work with rabbits rather than dogs or cats? I choose to work with the rabbits eight years ago when the shelter had no knowledge of how to care for them. There were many cat cuddlers and dog walkers but hardly anyone caring about the rabbits. They were pretty much one of the forgotten animals, but that has all changed. They have their own space to play in and we now have over 20 rabbit volunteers. Pundles: and dogs. 4) What is the benefit of adopting a shelter animal? The benefit is that two animals are always saved through one adoption. The adopted animal, and the space it frees up to save another. 6) How does it feel when an animal gets adopted? It feels like you saved an animal's life. That you were a part of giving it a second chance. It's a wonderful feeling, each and every time. 7) What would you tell someone if they need to surrender their pet? The last thing you would want to do is to make a person feel badly about giving up their pet. I would hope that they would have exhausted all other options. That they've asked other friends and family members if they could help. If not, the animal may very well be better off being surrendered to the shelter. We would never want them to be dumped outside or neglected in their own home. 5) How can kids help ARL? Care… Adopt… Love I think kids can help the ARL by letting others know it exists, and that there are so many wonderful animals waiting for loving homes. They also have a "wish list" on their website. Many kids have fundraisers to raise awareness and to help with some of the basic needs of the animals. LUNCH Answer: Lunch box 1. because the word What word is in the middle? lunch is in a box. By Elizabeth Shontz Many students at Boyce Middle School are wondering about the gym and why it wasn’t ready for the new school year. So, I decided to investigate. I interviewed Mrs. Brown, the principal here at Boyce and Miss Mell, one of the gym teachers, and they gave me some great information, which I would like to share. The gym should be ready soon, perhaps this month. We will be playing and doing things a lot differently in gym class. Miss Mell said, “We will be playing floor hockey, basketball, and volleyball.” Our gym will have new basketball hoops, bleachers, scoreboards and a much better sound system. It will also be bigger and brighter. At the beginning of November Mrs. Brown told me that everything but the bleachers and floor had been installed. We had a major problem while building the gym. It was very unexpected. Mrs. Brown gave me lots of information about it. What happened was there was a certain rock under the gym floor. When the workers went to take off the old floor they found the rock. The rock under the gym floor caused it to rise in certain weather. To get the rock the workers had to dig down four feet to get it all out! When that was done, they poured new concrete. It took even longer to build because they had to wait for the concrete to cure. I hope you enjoyed this update Mrs. Mellinger & Mrs. Brown talk about the on our new gym here at Boyce new gym and what was discovered under the old gym floor when they went to dig it up. Page 3 3 Books that Hold Your Interest The Son of Neptune By Rick Riordan Reviewed by Rachel Wilkinson I would recommend this book because it is action packed with Roman Gods, Basilisks, and Cyclopes. The chapters were exciting from the very beginning. The book was long with 513 pages but it didn't seem so long. The more I read the more exciting the story became. with action but this one is special. It's the first one using Roman Gods. All of Rick Riodan's other books use Greek Gods. In The Son of Neptune the gods have different names. Zeus's name is Jupiter and Hades is Pluto. The introduction of new Gods and an action packed plot is why this book is special. I recommend this reading this book. Rick Riodan's books are always filled The Bad Beginning The Red Pyramid By Lemony Snicket Reviewed by Lauren Connors By Rick Riordan Reviewed by Lauren Connors This book is the first of a series of 13 books. I highly recommend this book, but not for people who only enjoy reading about happy situations. This book is really sad and scary. It is about 3 siblings whose lives are a series of unfortunate events. It all starts when the siblings are on the beach and get some bad news that their house burned down and their parents didn't make it out. They are forced to stay with their nasty uncle, Count Olaf. Count Olaf wants the children's fortune, so he makes a plan to marry the oldest sibling, Violet. To see what the children do about this plan, read this book. It might be sad, but surprisingly good! Page 4 The Red Pyramid is a wonderful book. It is by the same author who wrote the Percy Jackson series, Rick Riordan. It is about two siblings, Carter and Sadie, whose dad gets them into a hard and dangerous situation. Carter and Sadie are some of the most powerful children in the world. They have to fight gods and monsters to get to the most powerful god, Set, and save their dad. The only problem is that Carter and Sadie just figured out about their powers and aren't to sure how to use them yet. To learn more about Sadie and Carter's adventure and figure out if they save their dad, read The Red Pyramid. Panther’s Paw Can You solve the Mystery? By Anber Bhuiyan Detective Rob Mike arrived on the scene to find a crowd gathered around the victim. Mr. Louis Copeland's lifeless body lay on the sidewalk in front of his twelve-story building. "His name is Louis Copeland," answered the patrolman on duty. He's the owner of the building." "Did he fall off the roof?" asked Detective Mike. " “No," he answered definitively. "The door to the roof is locked from the inside and only Mr. Copeland had the key. His keys were found on his body. Any witnesses?" "Only one," answered the patrolman as he walked Detective Mike to an older woman sitting in the lobby of the building. "This is Phyllis Waters. She lives on the tenth floor. Poor woman saw the man drop past her front window just a few minutes ago.” Detective Mike escorted Mrs. Waters back to her apartment and took her story in detail. "I was hanging my new drapes when I heard an awful scream," claimed Mrs. Waters. "And then he just fell past my window like a sack of potatoes." She sat in a rocking chair next to the very window she was speaking of. Detective Mike observed the room. It was very bare. In addition to the rocking chair and new drapes there was an old sofa on the other side of the room and a tiny black and white television set. "What did you do after you saw the body, Mrs. Waters?" asked Detective Mike. "I immediately called the police," she answered. "And then I took the elevator down to the lobby." Detective Mike then walked up one flight to the eleventh floor and interviewed Stan Cantone who lived directly above Mrs. Waters. "I didn't see anything," claimed Stan. "My wife was at work all day. I had my hands full with the kids." Detective Mike crossed to the front window and tried to open it. "Sorry. Can't open that window. I nailed it shut a while back. Can't be too careful with children around." The tall French door style window was nailed shut and dried paint covered the nails. "Did you know the victim very well?" asked the Detective. "I hate to speak ill of the dead," answered Mr. Cantone. "But Mr. Copeland was a no good crook. This used to be a pretty crummy neighborhood. Now that it's been revitalized, people are dying to get into this place. Suddenly, that no good land lord ups the rent to almost twice what we were paying. Some people have been living in this building for years now. How can they afford to pay that kind of rent?" Finally, Detective Mike ventured up one more flight to interview the occupant of the twelfth floor apartment, Grace Copeland, the victim's wife. "I last saw Louis an hour before the horrible accident," cried the grieving widow. "He said he had a couple of odd jobs to take care of and then he would come back for lunch." "What kind of odd jobs?" asked Detective Mike. "He wasn't specific," Mrs. Copeland answered as she watered fresh roses in her front window box. "He was always very attentive to the tenants needs. He was such a good man." "Did anyone else have a key to the roof?" Detective Mike asked. "No, just my husband," Mrs. Copeland replied. "Why do you ask?" "I'm just ruling out all the possibilities," the detective answered. "And the way I see it, there is really only one." Who did it? a) Phyllis Waters b) Stan Cantone c) Grace Copeland d) Other (answer on back cover) Volume 17, Issue 1 Page 5 Your Horoscope for the Month of January By Anber Bhuiyani Capricorn: Dec 22- Jan 19 You are a practical Earth sign who is realistic and hard-working. Holidays and Traditions by Cara Chiocca Romanian Puerto Rican and French There is a wedding that lasts 3 days. OM the 1st day, the ladies would go in a horse and buggy to the Greek Orthodox church ad the people would then get married. For thanksgiving, everyone in the house would draw what they were thankful for on a piece of paper. The pieces of paper would be put in a bowl and a parent or adult would pick one out at a tine and would ask, “ Who drew this?” whomever drew the picture would explain what it was and why they were thankful for it. Perinita is a wedding dance with an outer circle of people dancing around one person in the middle. The middle dancer will put a bandana around someone's neck and sway places with them. This continues throughout the dance. People will go Christmas caroling. The carolers would show up at a family’s house and sing songs. The family would invite them in for sweets and plum candy. One of the Romania's national holidays is August 23rd when everyone parades and in one area they will eat Mititei, which are little sausages with horse radish and bread. December 6 is another holiday. Here, the family will polish their shoes and leave them outside their door for St. Nicklaus, who would leave something in the shoes like candy. Romania has another holiday called Spring Day which is on March 8th. The men would give their wives a little pin with strings to signify each year of marriage. St. Mary’s day is a holiday on August 15th. People wear old fashioned white costumes to resemble St. Mary. Volume 17, Issue 1 During the Christmas holiday, people would assault your house! Similar to the traditions of Christmas caroling, a group of assaulters would go door to door and sing Puerto Rican Christmas songs outside your door while playing instruments like maracas, palitos, and guiro, until you invite them in for a little party. When you open the door they would yell, “Un Asalto!” There is another Puerto Rican ?Christmas holiday called the Three Kinds Day, or Dia’ De Los Tres Reyes Mangos, known in America as the Day of Epiphany, on January 6, which celebrates when Balthasas, Melchior, and Gaspar came to meet baby Jesus. On the Eve of Epiphany, or Vispera de los Tres Reyes Magos, children would leave miuld and coolies for the Magi, or three kings, and a shou box full of grass for the horses because there were no camels in Puerto Rico. In return, the magi would leave the children one gift to thank them for their generosity. There is a French tradition that has cake called Gallete des Rois, which is a cake with a little ceramic figure called Fevre baked inside it. Whom eve was lucky enough to get the piece of cake with the ceramic figure inside would be crowned king or queen for the night and you got to wear a crown and keep Fevre. Ther eis a French bakery in Millvale called Jean-Marc Chatellier’s that still makes Gallete des Rois if you’d like to try it! Page 7 Technology Corner Entry By Daniel Speer Hello! Welcome to Technology Corner! For those who don’t know, Technology Corner’s purpose is to review the latest in video games, computer games, etc. Shall we get started? This month’s review is about the iPhone 4 S, S standing for Siri. Siri is apparently a software program that speaks. You know how that sometimes your parents have a setting on their Blackberrys that allows them to say command, for instance “Call Robinson”. Siri does that, but it also reminds you of appointments, meetings, and best of all, you just have to speak like you normally do. You don’t have Mario vs Mario! By Eddie Lawrence Are you looking for a new Wii game to play? Well, you’re in luck because there are 2 great games that can be owned today, Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy 2. But you might ask: which of these games are worth buying? Well after you are done reading this, you will find the game that is right for you. STORY The stories of these games are very much the same, the princess of the mushroom kingdom is kidnapped by a giant monster named Bowser and it is up to Mario to save her. In order to get to Bowser, the player must obtain objects called “power stars.” Once these stars are collected, the player may advance to more exotic galaxies. Although the story lines are not that interesting, the games are still excellent and enjoyable to play. MULTIPLAYER If you are a fan Page 8 to follow a set voice pattern like on Blackberrys. The iPhone 4S also has the fast and powerful A5 processing chip that has two powerful cores and faster graphics. It also features iOS 5, the newest version of Apple’s mobile operating system. The iCloud, a storage device that stores just about everything you download, comes free with the iOS 5 software. But the best thing about the iPhone 4S is its excellent camera. The camera has 8 megapixels and excellent lenses for taking photos and making films. But the iPhone 4S isn’t without its faults. For one, the phone has bad battery life, but there is an update coming out soon that will remedy the energydraining bug. Also, there was an extended outage of Siri that started November 3rd. It was restored Thursday night the 4th. There have also been yellow-tinted screens, particularly affecting black-cased units. And finally, there is the price. It starts at 199.00 American dollars for the base model, and continues up to $399.00 dollars for the 64 Giga Bite model. of multiplayer games then I think you will have fun with Super Mario Galaxy 2. But in Super Mario Galaxy the multiplayer is very limited, in this game on the only thing the second player can do is freeze some of the enemies and objects. But in Super Mario Galaxy 2 the multiplayer feature is better as the second player is able to pick up coins, pick up objects and destroy enemies. DIFFICULTY In Super Mario Galaxy there are a variety of worlds, galaxies and things to keep the game exciting even after you beat the final boss. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a little bit easier than the original game and I know a seven year old who beat the game in TWO days. Also, after the final boss, the extras are very easy to beat. GAMEPLAY Super Mario Galaxy has enough galaxies and missions to keep a player’s interest. However, Super Mario Galaxy 2 has a lot more bosses and creative power ups than the original game. Plus, it has Yoshi; a cute and helpful lizard that Mario can ride on. Also, Mario Galaxy 2 has better and much more music that a player can hum to while playing the game. CONCLUSION Both games are creative, difficult and fun, but I would recommend Mario Galaxy 2, especially if you love Yoshi, multiplayer and battling bosses. However, if you are into challenging games then you should buy Super Mario Galaxy. Thank you for reading this and have a great time with your new game.
