Five students from St. Mary’s Catholic Community School recently traveled to Crawfordsville, Indiana, to compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Tech Challenge in an event called “Ring It Up”. Students were challenged to design and build a robot to move rings from one area to another in a playing field. Coach Heather Clarkson hopes that opportunities like this will inspire young people to be science and technology leaders. The FIRST program builds science, engineering, and technology skills, inspires innovation and fosters wellrounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. This year’s team, the first of its kind at St. Mary’s, included sixth graders Ernie Anderson and Mallory Ellenson, and seventh graders Patrick Olenik, Brad Kozlowski, and Samantha Perea. Adult mentors included teacher Clarkson and volunteer engineer Dennis Hilburger. The team is called Cybercatz. For more information visit www.usfirst.org and www.stmarycrownpoint.org. The truce, under the provisions of the Paris Peace Accords, had gone into effect on January 27, 1973, but was quickly and repeatedly violated by both sides as they jockeyed for control of territory in South Vietnam. Nixon had been instrumental in convincing the reluctant South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu to sign the peace treaty, promising him that, “We will respond with full force should the settlements be violated by North Vietnam.” The Vietnamese North-South fighting continued into 1974. Thieu appealed to Nixon to make good on his promises, even though virtually all remaining American forces were brought back to the United States in 1973. Nixon had become increasingly embroiled in the Watergate scandal and resigned from office in August, 1974. His successor, Gerald Ford, was unable to persuade Congress to provide the promised support to South Vietnam. The North Vietnamese then launched their final offensive in the spring of 1975 and South Vietnam was defeated. It surrendered unconditionally on April 30, 1975. ✴Paint Shop Your local auto body repair shop! ◆ ◆ ◆ ◆ ◆ ◆ Independently-owned Lifetime Written Warranty DuPont Color Matching System Installation of Draw-tite Hitches Insurance Claims Welcome Free Estimates All domestic or foreign vehicles with unibody or framed chassis! During the meetings, caregivers are encouraged to share information, give and receive support, and exchange coping experiences and strategies. Meetings are open to the public and facilitated by a trained professional and/or family member. “It’s important for caregivers to remember that they are not alone on their journey through dementia caregiving. Support groups are a great way to meet other caregivers for advice and understanding,” said Kristi Ritchie of the Alzheimer’s Association. There is no cost or commitment for caregivers to attend.
