Lusky Mill, Lusky Road
‘Lusky Mill’ Adj 34 Lusky Road • Killinchy • BT23 6RR Artists Impression An opportunity exists to acquire a part of Ulster's industrial history comprising of Lusky Mill, set on approximately 1 acre on the banks of the Blackwater River, in the heart of the rolling Co. Down countryside. The Mill which has been sensitively restored, renovated and enhanced to create a most delightful family home which is quite unique and is steeped in the industrial and agricultural history of the area. The Mill built in 1823 and operated until around 1960 was a local point in the area and remains to this day with the mill chimney visible for a distance around the mill. The Mill fell into disrepair over the last 40 years and in the last 2 years the vendor has painstakingly restored the stonework and roof to their former glory, incorporating period style sash windows which seamlessly integrate into the fabric. Internally old timber work and beams have been retained with new timbers incorporated, combining to create a most pleasing effect. Modern features include oil fired central heating, luxury kitchen fittings and sanitary ware, to name but a few. The accommodation is bright and spacious with a contemporary feel which will blend the old and new into a unique family home. Lusky Mill located about 20 minutes drive from the edge of Belfast, Stormont and Belfast City airport, is well placed to take advantage of a selection of water sports available on Strangford Lough just a few minutes drive away. A range of local shops, pubs and restaurants are available close by, with transport to many of the top grammar schools available in East Belfast, Newtownards and Downpatrick, in Lisbane and / or Balloo. History Built in or around 1823 by David Gordon, who was then landlord of Florida Manor, to serve the needs of the estate and its tenants. The original corn mill, with water wheel and kiln, was constructed on the banks of the Blackwater River, which was damned to create a mill pond, and race to channel water to drive the mill wheel and 3 sets of grinding stones within the mill and then to be returned to the river. David Gordon, a banker established The Banking House of Gordon and Co in 1808 which later became the Belfast Banking Co, and latterly The Northern Bank Ltd. David Gordon inherited Florida Manor and Delamont Estate in 1993. The estate tenants were required to bring their corn, wheat and maize to the mill for drying and grinding. The Mill tenancy changed hands, and in about 1864 a flax scutching mill was built by Fredk Rea Shaw with a latter scutch mill added 5 - 8 years later which is thought to have been driven by a steam engine. William Shaw took over the mill from Frew Shaw in 1894 and then passed hands in 1909 to a George Harris, who died in 1944, and once again passed hands to Raymond Harris, son of George. It is thought that the steam powered flax mill ceased working around 1931, although some reports suggest it was recommenced during the war for a period. It is believed that Raymond Shaw continued to operate the corn mill until around 1960 when it finally ceased working around 1970, the mill, mill house and lands were sold to a new owner who built a new house over the river. The property was purchased by the vendor in 2007, who started the process of renovating the original mill.
