Boat Sober
Boating under the influence (BUI) of alcohol,
drugs, or intoxicants is against the law. A BUI
conviction is a gross misdemeanor punishable
by up to a $5,000 fine and/or 364 days in jail.
During Seafair weekend, multiple law enforcement
agencies will be enforcing BUI laws on Lake
Washington. Boaters operating a boat under the
influence may be subject to arrest and the vessel
may be impounded.
Designate a Skipper
Fact: it is not illegal to have open containers
on a boat. However, operating a boat under the
influence is illegal, so avoid any temptation to
operate your boat while impaired. Be sure to
designate a skipper who is at least 12 years old,
has a boater education card, and is qualified to
operate the boat. Remember: if your hands are
on the wheel, you are considered the driver of
the boat.
WHAT YOU NEED TO
KNOW ABOUT BUI
The BUI law applies to all boats,
motorized and non-motorized, which
includes rafts, kayaks, and canoes.
Sun, wind, noise, vibration and motion—
stressors common to the boating
environment—intensify the effects of
alcohol, drugs, and some medications.
Alcohol use is dangerous for passengers,
too. Intoxication can cause slips,
falls overboard, and other
dangerous accidents.
BOAT RESPONSIBLY. DESIGNATE A SKIPPER.
