Campion has scaled new heights, being announced the best boy’s days school in India yet again. Campion helps students to identify and develop their talents to the fullest. The year 2014 has been a very eventful one, and below is a list of Inter-House/Intra-School activities: JUNE The Britto House won the Inter House Quiz Competition for Classes 5 to 10. In the Impromptu Competition, some of the students, such as Sujay Choksey, Rahul Menon and Pratyush Ghosh from the 10th Standard, delivered memorable speeches. Xavier House secured pole position. On the 20th June – Annual Awards Day – Boys were honoured with certificates, medals, trophies and scholarships for excellence and achievements across the spectrum of academics, leadership, social service, literary, non-literary, artistic and sporting events over the previous year. It looks like next year’s Awards Day will be even grander and celebrate even more achievements than this year’s! JULY In the Essay Writing Competition for Classes 5 to 10, there was a 100% increase in the number of participants this year and many boys wrote captivating essays, cleverly exploiting nuances in the wording of the topics. 2 In the English Elocution Competition for Classes 8, 9 and 10, once again, the 10th Standards were simply outstanding – judges opined that children should be encouraged to write their own speeches. Swayam Dakle and Rahul Menon were simply amazing, besting the rest of this amazingly talented batch of 10th Standard students. In the Indian Music Competition for Classes 5 and 6, the judges spoke highly about the standard of singing, confidence and the choice of songs. In the English Dramatics Competition for Classes 8 to 10, the skills of acting, speaking, expression, dance and direction were showcased through the one act plays. Boys, teachers and parents worked as a team in staging the dramas held at Sophia College. 1. Britto – The Monkey’s Paw (Winner) 2. Berchmans – The Unexpected 3. Loyola – Being Human 4. Xavier – The Outsourced The best performers from each House as well as the overall event were specially commended by the judges, who once again suggested that children should be encouraged to write their own script as well as direct the plays. In short, they recommended that teachers should reduce their help to a minimum. Various workshops were held for the boys of classes 8, 9 and 10 in the months of June and July. AUGUST No major activities took place due to exams. 3 SEPTEMBER The Art Competition was a platform where students from Classes 5 to 10 exhibited their considerable artistic skills. The competition occurred on 6th September. About 120 participants took part, with the winner being the Britto House. The Xavier House showed their singing skills by winning the Inter-House Western Music Contest that took place on the 16th and 17th September for Classes 5 to 10. The Spelling Bee on 26th September for Classes 5 to 10 was won by the Xavier House. OCTOBER No major activities took place due to exams and Diwali vacations. NOVEMBER On 10th November, the English Debate for Classes 8 to 10 was held. Each of the participants delivered breathtaking speeches and firm rebuttals, but in the end, the day belonged to the boys of the Xavier House. The topics for the debate were: Class 8 - All mothers should stay at home to devote their time to children Master Aditya Jaishanker won a hard fought battle leaving the spectators enthralled his performance. Class 9 – Social networking sites are not good for our society:Master Arvind Parthasarthy won the day with a dazzling performance for the second straight year. Class 10 – The United Nations is an ineffective body and should be dissolved:Master Sujay Choksey outshone his competitors and was the undisputed winner in class 10. In the English Choral Singing Competition on 19th November for Classes 5 to 10, a disciplined Britto House choir was adjudged the winner. In the Indian Music competition on 28th November for Classes 8 to 10, House secured first place. Below is a list of prominent Inter-School activities that Campion has participated in: 4 SPORTS The School Annual Sports Day 2014-2015 was held on 24th November at the Priyadarshini Park. This annual event was met with extreme excitement by most Campionites. The teachers and students of the four houses (Berchmans, Britto, Xavier and Loyola) worked hard to compete amongst themselves to become champions in many events held on this day. Events such as the Mass-Drill Exercise, March Past, and track events which include 100m, 200m, 400m, 4 x100m were some of the highlights of the day, in which the athletes from each house competed amongst themselves to be the best. Berchmans house won the overall Athletics Championship 2014-2015. The winners for the following Inter-House Sports events were: 1. Basketball – Xavier House 2. Football– Berchmans House 3. Cricket – Britto House 4. Carom – Loyola House 5. Chess – Xavier House 6. Table Tennis – Britto House 5 IMMACULATA The school took part in the 3rd Immaculata organized by St. Mary’s ICSE-and exhibited fine talents. Campion won the Overall Winners Trophy for the 3rd time in succession. Special credit must go to the teachers and especially Mr. Savio Alphonso who put in a lot of time and hard work for Campion’s success. CMUN: Campion sent a 25-member delegation to the conference hosted at the Trident Hotel and the following Campionites placed in their committees: 1. Sujay Choksey- 2nd 2. Pratyush Ghosh-3rd 3. Sujay Choksey-1st Samad Koita-3rd Jaymal Lodha and Dyuwan Shukla-3rd Pratyush Ghosh and Shaayak Chatterjee-2nd Amal Asrani and Karan Sanghi-2nd Raunak Sabarwal-2nd Jeh Mory-1st CONFLUENCE & ART SUMMIT In Confluence 2014, an annual event hosted by Singapore International School, in Dahisar, Campion secured the following positions in the Literary and Performing Arts sections: 1) Band - 2nd 2) Best Vocalist –Raj Dholakia 3) Best Keyboardist – Swayam Dakle 4) Best Actor – Raj Dholakia 5) Quiz- 1st- Jeh Mory, Krish Tejuja, Jivesh Mohan 6) Essay-Writing Competition- 1st- Dylan D’ Souza 8 ROCHAK An interview with contingent leader Krish Mewawala “The position of contingent leader has many duties and responsibilities and I feel safe to say that I have fulfilled them to the best of my abilities. Although we were not that successful we gave it our best shot, we finished 7th out of 25 schools. It was an honour for me and assistant contingent leader Jaymal Lodha to represent the school at such a prestigious event. I hope that I am given another opportunity to lead the school at many other competitive events. I would like to conclude by congratulating every student who participated and won at Rochak 2014 held by Christ Church School.” DEBATES In the Frank Anthony Memorial Debate Competition, Sujay Choksey and Pratyush Ghosh won the National Finals held at St Gregorius School , Chembur. A few lucky students from the 8th and 9th Standard watched them in action and gathered tips from their respective debating styles. J.B. TURBULENCE In this JB Vaccha-organized Inter-School competition, Campion secured 1st place in the Band Event. ELOCUTION In the Goan Institute Elocution competition, Delsuz Damkevala 6A secured 2nd place. In the Bandra Gymkhana Elocution competition, Campion secured overall 1st place with Swayam Dakle and Harshvardhan Zaveri, and Sahil Kothari each winning laurels for the school. 9 SPORTS What an absolutely fantastic year it has been for sports at Campion school and in particular for football! There have been some notable performances throughout the year in various different sports: FOOTBALL UNDER-16 FOOTBALL TEAM MSSA U/16 B team came 3rd in the 4th Division Boys MSSA Football Championship 2014. U/16 A came 3rd in the Dereck D’ Souza Football Championship 2014. UNDER-15 FOOTBALL TEAM Campion school stood 3rd in MSSA Utpal Sanghvi Football Championship 2014 UNDER -14 FOOTBALL TEAM U/14 B Team came 3rdin the MSSA Football Championship 2014.TENNIS MSSA 1) Rahul Verma won the 2nd place in the under 14 MSSA Lawn Tennis Championships 2014. He is currently ranked number 4 in Maharashtra. 2) Amaan Tezabwala won the 3rd place in the under 14 MSSA Lawn Tennis Championships. 3) Campion School after 20 years won the team Championship. 4) Keenaj Mevada won 1st place in the AISM Lawn Tennis U-16 Championship. 5) Rahul Verma won the 2nd place in the AISM Lawn Tennis U-16 Championship. 6) Nihal Kothari has been selected to represent Maharashtra in Lawn Tennis. DSO 1) Campion School won 2nd place in U/17 Lawn Tennis Championships 2) Campion School won 2nd place in U/14 Lawn Tennis Championships CHESS DSO 1) Hritik Bhansali stood 4th in the Mumbai City U/16 chess Championship and was selected for the state Championship. 2) Anurag Jaisingh stood 1st in the Mumbai City U/14 chess Championship and was selected for the state Championship. 10 MSSA 1) Anurag Jaisingh stood 3rd in the U/14 chess Championship AQUATICS DSO Mann Joshi secured 3rd place in the 100 meters backstroke. TABLE TENNIS DSO Campion school secured the 2nd place in the DSO Table Tennis Championship 2014. SCHOOL SOCIAL AND CUTURAL PROGRAMS 1) Feast day of St. Ignatius Loyola – 31st July 2) Independence Day program – 15th August 3) Teacher’s Day program – 5th September 4) Felicitation of the Teachers in the REAP program – 13th September 5) Children’s Day Program – 14th November 11 JUNIOR REMINISCENCES INTER-HOUSE ACTIVITIES INTER-HOUSE INDIAN MUSIC COMPETITION 1B- Sherman D’ Costa The Indian Music competition was held in school. We had to wear Indian clothes. Our house was the 1st runner- up. Ms. Sharmila Mishra conducted the competition. We all had a good time. 2A- Jehaan Shah The Indian Music Competition was conducted in the Tagore Hall. I represented the Xavier House and my song was ‘ Samne Ye Kaun Aya’. I loved the song we sang and I loved the fact that we all sang together. 3B- Vidit Bohra The Indian Music Competition is my favourite because I get to learn new songs and hear new songs. I eagerly wait every year for this competition. This year the Loyola House, which is my House, bagged the 1st place. Before the competition, I was very nervous. However after the results were announced I jumped with joy. 4A- Abner Alva For the Indian Music Competition the Britto House came first. The four houses sang four different songs. The competition was tough but taking part was fun. 4B- Mustafa Jawadwala The Indian Music Competition was held on 17th October. I was very nervous about it and all the houses were given very good songs. We tried our best but we came last. I was happy that we participated and put in our best. The parents enjoyed all the songs we sang. 12 G.K COMPETITION 1B- Kiaan Mistri At the first round of the competition, I was very nervous, but when I got into the second round I was happy. Finally, when I won the final round my mother gave me a gift. 2B- Parth Parikh My team was very nervous when the quiz started. We were losing, but in the last round we had a puzzle to solve and our team solved it first and we got 20 points, which put us in the second position. 3B- Deevansh Choksi At the G.K quiz I realized that we have to practice a lot and we also need to read the newspapers regularly and that was what I did. I felt nervous on stage but it was fun. I learnt to work as a team and help my friends and I know that why we won. 4A- Vatsal Roongta I was delighted when I got to know that I was in the 3rd round of the G.K Quiz. It was a remarkable and a challenging experience for me. MARATHI CHORAL RECITATION Class 4 B – Perseus Mistry We were all very nervous before the choral recitation. We all wondered who would win. All the houses recited their poems very well. In the end the Principal announced that our house had won. We were overjoyed to hear that. SPELLING BEE Class 1 A- Akil Fernandes The Spelling Bee competition was a lot of fun. Each round was difficult but I am glad I came first. Class 3 A- Arriaan Joshi I was excited to be selected for the Spelling Bee final round. I was shivering out of fear on stage, but as the competition went on I became more confident. Class 4 A – Aditya Balan I was surprised when I won the Spelling Bee competition. The last time I won, it was in the 1 st standard. I made some mistakes in the final rounds, as did the other boys. Finally, after a few more rounds I was declared the winner. 13 ENGLISH ELOCUTION Class 1 A- Arnav Asher The English Elocution was very exciting. There were many poems recited like ‘Daddy’s nose’ and others. Our class enjoyed it very much. Class 2 B- Mihr Kantawala For the English Elocution there were four houses that recited four different poems. The judges were very nice. The Britto House won the competition. It was nice to listen to so many funny poems. Class 3 B- Aditya Chheda The English Elocution competition was a tough one. We had to recite in groups. A more difficult than reciting individually. We made a few mistakes. We also acted well and the audience roared with laughter. Class 4 A- Viraj Thaker The English Elocution took place on 30th September with the Britto House standing first. It was quite a close tie between the houses with barely a point or two of difference. ART COMPETITION Class 2 B- Ranveer Nangre Patil I like Art because after you draw something you can keep it and it is very beautiful to look at. I got the second runner up certificate for the competition and I was very happy. Class 3 B- Krish Bhatia The Art competition was a very interesting event. We could choose between three options. I drew a sunset scene. I enjoyed the event because I drew to please myself and I was amazed that I won. INTERSCHOOL ACTIVITIES MSSA FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT Class 3B- Derezar Master It was amazing that we won two tournaments in a row. I was happy that my team did their best and we won two trophies for our school. 14 MILIND DEORA FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT Class 4 B – Ram Rathod We reached the finals of the tournament and it was a big match. I was happy to be the captain of the team. We all played well. MSSA GYMNASTICS Class 3 A- Karl Hansotia It was the first time that I had gone for an Inter-School Competition and I was scared of my competitors. I was scared, but when I went on stage I was suddenly very confident. I was happy to come first in the U/8 category. CHESS TOURNAMENT Class 4 B – Mahir Ranawat The chess tournament was held at Dharavi Sports C omplex. There were many schools that participated. We had a lot of fun playing chess in between the actual matches. ART The inter-school art competition was held at the Nehru Science Centre at Worli. I worked hard on my piece, but I was not selected for the third round. I was happy that I tried my best. SWIMMING Class 2B- Kayaan Shah I tried my best at the swimming competition and was happy to come 4th. I decided that next time I would try harder. SQUASH Class 3B- Aditya Chandani At the Inter-School Squash Competition I realized that the confidence that I gain in school from the various activities we do really helped me. I am glad to participate and do my best. 15 CONCLUDING NOTE Thus, we can conclude that Campion is a bustling school, with activities planned for nearly every day. This provides students and teachers with both a challenge and an opportunity: the challenge to retain good academic scores, and the opportunity to display, unlock and enhance the extracurricular talents needed as a major supplement to pure academics. Campionites have successfully taken advantage of both (for we must realize that every challenge is also an opportunity) over the years as well as in the current one. In short, Campion is the place where I want to be! 16
