WORLD BOOK DAY AT THE CAMPION SCHOOL
World Book Day at The Campion School was a day to remember! On Thursday, 5th
March, Year 7 & 8 students and staff, came into school dressed in fictional
character costumes and the school was buzzing. The morning began with a grand
parade in the main hall where students competed for various titles. Students were
encouraged by Dracula's bride, (Miss Biviano) our compere, to perform for the
audience on the stage and say a few words in role and our boys did us proud.
Mr Friel, Head of Year 7, and Mr McDarby, Head of Year 8, performed a reading from
their favourite books and the Year 7s were treated to a special performance by our
guest speaker, Kevin Walsh, who spent the rest of the day holding workshops for all
Year 7s to encourage literacy and reading.
The winners of the Year 7 Parade, selected by a panel of judges, led by Cruella Deville
(Mrs Bree), are as follows:

Sean Johnson (7 Fisher) who came as Peter from 'The Hunger Games'.
Jack Buyukdeniz (7 Fox) who came as Oliver Twist from the Dickens novel by the
same name.
The overall winner for best costume was Luke Maylen (7 Garnet) who dressed up
as a character from 'War Horse'.
The winners of the Year 8 Parade, selected by a panel of judges, are as follows:

Dinethra Fernando (8 Fox) who came as Fantastic Mr Fox from the book by the
same name.
Most original costume:
Jack Duffy (8 Garnet) who came as Peter from 'The Hunger Games'.
The overall winner for best costume was Samuel Nazareth (8 Southwell) who
dressed up as Aladdin from the book by the same name.
At lunchtime, reading performances
were held in the library by staff and
students from Year 7 all the way
through to Year 13. Hosted by Sam
Rodriguez and Callum Kayne in Year
12, an audience of over 75 students
and staff celebrated the event and
embraced reading from a variety of
genres. The event was a real success
and students were praised for
their excellence in reading and
performing.
Michael Walker (7 Garnet) was voted
as the best student perfomer.
Thank you to all the staff who
supported the day by dressing up and
to those who contributed to the
reading performances in the library,
and a big thank you to all the parents
who invested time in getting their
sons’ costumes, and for making World
Book Day such a huge success.
PRUDENTIAL RIDE
LONDON-SURREY 100
The Brentwood Catholic Children's
Society has a limited number of charity
places in the ‘Ride London 100’ taking
place on Sunday 2nd August 2015. The
deadline is fast approaching for
applications, so please don’t delay if
you are Interested in taking up a place
for this challenging 100 mile ride – a
legacy of the 2012 Olympics. We ask
that cyclists pay a registration fee of
£50 to secure their place and pledge to
raise a minimum of £600 (excluding Gift

MY TRIP TO SWITZERLAND
My trip to Switzerland was fantastic. The games, the skiing and the experience
were all amazing. In the hotel itself, we had lots of fun with the games’ room
which contained ping-pong and mini football tables which we used in our free
time. The skiing was amazing. The instructors were very nice and taught us loads
of new things like how to parellel, turn and stop, how to use a ski plough and much
more! I enjoyed it every day, even though we fell over …. A LOT!
The food we ate was an experience too! One night we had a special dish. We had
to dip bread into melted cheese – this was different and interesting.
The French we did was fun because we got to go down to the shops and buy a
postcard for our parents, then we went back and wrote them in French.
Overall, I think the trip was amazing because of all the new things I tried and I
would definitely go back!

WORKING IN FREETOWN—SIERRA LEONE

I decided to volunteer to work in Sierra Leone in October 2014. I was aware of some first hand stories relating to the outbreak
in Liberia and given my training in Infectious Diseases, I felt a personal obligation to volunteer. I was of course conscious that I
had responsibilities at home – principally to my two children, Zac and Oscar, aged 14 and 12. My commitment to volunteer
was cemented when I saw pictures of children suffering as a result of the outbreak. It reminded me of my time in Lesotho and
of the desperate plight that some people face purely as a result of the place of their birth. My family were supportive of me
going although anxious of course. My son told me that he thought I should go; “If that was happening to us and somebody
came to help then that would be amazing and anyway if you die at least you will have died trying to help people”. An
incredible response that I think I will remember forever. Prior to departure I was nervous about what might happen and
conscious that if I did get infected then the decision to go would have perhaps been irresponsible.
I arrived on the 3 January 2015 and I was immediately overwhelmed by the dedication of the other individuals that were
working there and conscious that my own particular effort was quite insignificant by comparison. It is not possible in this small
article to communicate all of them but there were amazing stories of commitment everywhere I turned. I learnt of the
situation at the beginning of the outbreak and how five Kings’ Volunteers were in country; Marta Lado Castro Rial, Oliver
Johnson, Katy Lowe, Suzanne Thomas and Terry Gibson . I learnt how these individuals had stayed to tackle the situation and
how Marta and Oliver had set up the isolation unit at the front of the hospital with support from local staff. The unit
functioned as a place to diagnose patients and manage them prior to transfer to a treatment centre; a model that was
replicated across the country. I learnt of the dedication of the local staff working in difficult circumstances and sometimes
ostracised from their communities as a result. I learnt about some of the difficulties that the team had encountered along the
way as they tried to manage the case load and to keep the hospital running as best they could. I met and learnt the stories of
many other volunteers; local and international, short and long term. It was a tremendous privilege to meet these individuals
and to hear their stories first hand.
My job was to work in the isolation unit. We screened individuals
attending hospital and admitted those that could have Ebola to the unit for
testing. Positive cases were rapidly transported to a treatment centre.
Negative cases were either discharged or referred to the hospital for
further treatment.
The situation in the country had dramatically changed just prior to my
arrival. The number of cases had dropped significantly making the work
considerably easier and less stressful. In the time I was there we saw
between three and five cases per week but in the last week we admitted
only one positive case. It is a relief to see the numbers declining and it will
be a great thing when the outbreak is over although there is of course still
a lot more work to do before that is realised.
I am now home and seeing out my incubation period prior to being
allowed back to work. I am able to reflect on my experience. I am glad
that I volunteered. I am grateful for the opportunity that Kings gave me to
help in their unit and to my employer, colleagues and family who supported my decision to volunteer. I feel tremendously privileged to have been
able to work in this setting and to have met so many amazing individuals. I
commend all of them for the work that they have done and continue to do
and doff my cap to them in total respect and admiration.

HIT THE ROAD - Saturday, 2nd May 2015
a Fundraising Walk for the Teenage Cancer Trust
The school’s fifth annual fundraising walk for the Teenage Cancer Trust takes place on Saturday,
2nd May. As many of you will know, this event is organised in memory of sixth former Jack Chester, who
sadly died in September 2010. Jack was a leading ambassador for TCT and an inspiration to everyone at
school.
This year’s walk will take in paths, parks and canals, past skyscrapers, Olympic stadia, Tower of London,
Tower bridge, Greenwich and the Cutty Sark. There are two distances on offer:
a circular 20 mile route (setting off at approx. 10 am) that starts and finishes at Canary Wharf;
a 10 mile route (setting off at approx. 12.30 pm) that starts at Victoria Park and finishes at Canary Wharf.
There will be certificates for all who complete the walk and, afterwards, we will meet up in
Wetherspoons (the Ledger Building), which is close to the finish point.
This is a great day out and an opportunity for all members of the school community to get together for
fun, fitness and socialising. We look forward to seeing our regular walkers again and hope to welcome
many new ones!
If you would like to take part, please complete the entry form and return it to Mrs Caroline Meehan at
the school by the end of March. The entry fee of £15 (adults) or £10 (senior citizens/students/children
under 16) includes a t-shirt. Please make cheques payable to 'The Campion School'. A sponsorship form
is also available to download.

A big well done to all the boys who were involved in the Essex Schools’
Rugby Finals’ Day. It’s a fantastic achievement to reach such a stage and to be
competing to become County finalists is a great effort. This is the second year in a
row where we have had representation in all three Finals.
On the day we had two winners from three fixtures.

CONGRATULATIONS
British National Trampolining Championships, Birmingham
Heidi Surman-Wells made the British Championships this weekend competing
against other under 19 novices from around the country. Heidi performed
exceptionally well scoring 53.5 for her two routines, however she just missed out
on being placed by 0.3, eventually ending up in 5th position.
An excellent achievement, well done Heidi!
