The purpose of our visit was to provide information on the nature of the foundations and the underlying subsoil in order to identify the reason for the movement exhibited by the property. The geological survey map of the England and Wales (Sheet No. 295 - Taunton) shows the site to be underlain by the Mercia Mudstone Groups, noted to comprise of a predominately red, less commonly green-grey, mudstone and silt stones, with thick halite bearing units; with thin beds of gypsum and sandstones. The site is noted to be close to an area of unknown age terrace deposits. The site investigation comprised the excavation of 2No trial pits, one located on either corner of the rear projection. Through the base of each trial pit a hand auger borehole was drilled to a depth of approximately 1.50m where they were closed due to impenetrable strata. Details of the drainage survey are discussed within chapter 1.5 and recorded in full within Appendix 3. (Please refer to appendix 1 for site plan and location details). 1.2 FOUNDATION DETAILS The foundations of trial pit 1 comprise a CONCRETE footing, seated at a depth of 0.57m, noted to project 220mm from the face of the brick wall and attain a thickness of 200mm. The foundations of trial pit 1 were noted to be seated into loose, medium brown, claybound MADE GROUND containing whole bricks. The foundations of trial pit 2 comprise a CONCRETE footing, seated at a depth of 0.59m, noted to project 100mm from the face of the brick wall and attain a thickness of 220mm. The foundations of trial pit 2 were noted to be seated onto loose, red orange / brown, clay with grey mottling, containing black ash (MADE GROUND). (Please refer to appendix 2 for trial pit drawings and borehole logs). The control borehole (BH3) was noted to comprise topsoil over red-brown, topsoily, claybound MADE GROUND; the borehole was aborted at a depth of 0.80m due to an obstruction. No root activity was encountered within the boreholes. No water strikes were identified within either the trial pits or the boreholes, which were noted to be dry on completion. 1.3 DRAINAGE SURVEY A CCTV drainage survey was conducted on the accessible drainage of the property within close proximity to the area of damage, with 3No. manholes located and 3No. drainage runs surveyed Hydraulic tests were not possible due to the excessive invert of the manhole and the layout of the runs. (Please refer to appendix 3 for inspection log). 1.4 LABORATORY ANALYSIS All samples recovered were tested for their moisture content and atterberg limits. The comments and opinions expressed within this report are based on the ground conditions revealed by the site works, together with an assessment of the site and of the laboratory test results. Whilst opinions may be expressed relating to the subsoil conditions in parts of the site not investigated, for example between borehole or trial pit positions, these are for guidance and no liability can be accepted for their accuracy. The site investigation comprised the drilling of 2No. hand auger boreholes to a maximum depth of 3.56m. Borehole 1 was drilled through the base of a trial pit excavated on the rear wall of the out building on site, whilst borehole 2, to act as a control, was drilled 7.50m from the front of the main building to the front of the property area, as far as possible from the effects of vegetation. Disturbed samples were taken at 0.50m intervals for the purpose of laboratory testing and insitu strength tests in the form of hand held shear strength / mackintosh probe tests were conducted at each sample level. The position of all boreholes can be found on the site plan within Appendix I, with full borehole logs within Appendix II. Selected samples were tested in accordance with BS1377, method of tests for soil for Civil Engineering purposes: 1990. Samples were tested for their full moisture content profile, with selected samples tested for the Atterberg limits. Selected samples were also sent to a UKAS accredited laboratory for filter paper method testing for soil suction. All laboratory results can be found within Appendix 3. Borehole 1 encountered a very stiff, dark orange/red, sandy, gravelly CLAY beneath the topsoil, at 0.20m depth, and present to the close of the borehole at 2.57m below ground level. Borehole 2, the control, encountered MADE GROUND to a depth of 0.70m, onto a grey brown, silty, sandy, gravelly CLAY present to a depth of 1.50m. A cream/grey, orange brown, silty CLAY with occasional gravel was then encountered, and present to the close of the borehole at 3.56m below ground level. Root activity was encountered within borehole 1 and samples of the roots from 0.04m, foundation level, 0.50m, 1.00m and 1.50m depths were sent to Richardson’s Botanical Identifications for the purpose of identification. The results of this show the roots to be of Acer spp., of Maples and Sycamores. Sample suction profiles can be used to estimate the amount of ground heave that may occur following tree removal in a desiccated soil profile. The heave prediction is normally based on the soil suction profile compared to a control borehole. However, when soil suctions are not available, a heave calculation can be calculated with the use of moisture contents only although this is not as accurate as that conducted using soil suction results. The calculated heave potential for borehole 1 is: BH Depth Heave potential BH1 0.50m 77mm BH1 1.00m 49mm BH1 1.50m 42mm BH1 2.00m 27mm BH1 2.50m 6mm Section 2 – Heave Calculation – Page 1 Unit 9 Tyndales Farm Southend Road Woodham Mortimer Maldon Essex CM9 6TQ Tel: 0844 3358908 Section: Fax: 0844 3358907 FGS Ref: 2 Email: enquiries@fastrack-geotechnical.co.uk Web: www.fastrack-geotechnical.co.uk HEAVE CALCULATION REPORT Property Address: Client Claim Ref: Survey date: Operative: Atterberg limits tests were conducted on three samples of the CLAY subsoil from borehole 1, at 0.04m, 1.50m and 2.50m depths. This testing found the clay to be of intermediate plasticity (PI=18-20%) which indicates a low susceptibility to movement due to changes in moisture content. Full details of laboratory testing are shown within Appendix III. The comments and opinions expressed within this report are based on the conditions encountered and on the subsequent laboratory testing. Therefore, it is possible that some special conditions prevailing on site have not been taken into account.
