Curator’s Corner
I did find room in the “Air
Force Room” for the license
plate donated by Tracey and
also the Brian Scott picture.
Received from Nancy Field for
our library, a large number of
books. I will list these in my
next column. Not much else
happen in the last month
concerning the Curator.
Now for some trivia.
“Backs to the Wall”
The expression, backs to the
wall, meaning up against it,
dates back to 1535, but it was
memorably used when the
Germans launched their last
great offensive of the First
World War. On 12 April 1918,
Sir Douglas Haig, as British
Commander in Chief on the
Western Front, issued an order
for his troops to stand firm.
“There is no other course open
to us but to fight it out. Every
position must be held to the
last man; there must be no
retirement. With our backs to
the wall and believing in the
justice of our cause each one of us
must fight on to the end. The
safety of our homes and the
Freedom of mankind alike depend
upon the conduct of each one of
us at this critical moment”.
A.J.P. Taylor in his English History
1914-1945 comments; in England
this sentence was ranked with
Nelson’s last message. At the front,
the prospect of staff officers
fighting with their backs to the
walls of their luxurious chateau had
less effect.
H.I.L.T.H.Y.N.B.I.M.A. (How I
love to hold your naked body in
my arms.) Initialese used in
correspondence between lovers in
the Second World War.
How about this one?
N.O.R.W.I.C.H. ([K]nickers off
ready when I come home.)
Lovers acronym for use in
correspondence and to avoid
military censorship. Possibly in use
by the time of the First World War.
Here endeth the lesson.

Memo #33.16
Comrades,
I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you of an important service
available to all Veterans. Owned and operated by the New Chelsea
Society, Winch House is a beautiful 4 bedroom, 3-bathroom town house
located in South Vancouver that offers free, temporary accommodation
to Veterans, Legion members, Canadian Forces members, and First
Responders who are receiving medical care in the Metro Vancouver
area. Winch House allows these individuals the chance to recover from
surgery with their families, and without the added expense of costly
Vancouver accommodation.
If you, or someone you know, requires treatment in Vancouver and
would like to book a stay at Winch House, please contact me at (604)
