Are we doing everything we can as a community to
ensure today’s students are prepared for the demands
of tomorrow’s economy?
This question is frequently deliberated by parents,
educators, business leaders and community activists.
With the rapid shifts in technology and connectivity,
many of our children will be applying for jobs that
do not exist today. Beyond this, only 11 percent of
business leaders strongly believe recent graduates
have the skills to meet their current needs.

throughout Kentucky and Indiana:
Our educators are working hard to teach the standard
curriculum that must be learned in school. But, if
students do not understand the relevance of these
lessons, how can we expect them to stay engaged?
We have to provide meaningful opportunities that
engage students in education and equip them to
become financially independent, building a better
future for themselves and the community.
To achieve this, there is no easy fix, but Junior
Achievement provides a sustainable solution that can
have dramatic impact on a student’s prospects for a
better future.

Three of Greater Louisville’s outstanding business and civic
leaders were inducted into the Kentuckiana Business Hall of
Fame to benefit Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana on Thursday,
February 25, 2016, in the Kentucky International Convention
Center Cascade Ballroom. A reception honoring the inductees
began at 6 p.m. followed by the awards dinner at 7 p.m.
The event, hosted by Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana along
with title sponsor WDRB-TV and dinner sponsor Crowe Horwath,
LLP, recognized individuals for their significant contributions to
the Greater Louisville business and civic communities. Those
honored demonstrate business excellence; courageous thinking
and actions; vision and innovation; inspiring leadership; and
community involvement. They are role models for our future
generations.
The Laureates are chosen by a selection committee independent
of the Junior Achievement Board of Directors, staff and WDRB-TV.
The Kentuckiana Business Hall of Fame was founded in 1982.

Charles P. Denny
Chuck Denny is a
lifelong Louisvillian
married to his wife,
Donna, who also
has lived all of her
life in Louisville.
Chuck is a graduate
of Jefferson County
Public Schools
(Seneca High
School) and holds a
Bachelor’s Degree
and MBA from the University of Louisville. For
the past seven years, Chuck Denny has served
as PNC’s Regional President for the Louisville,
Western Kentucky, Tennessee, and Southern
Indiana markets. He joined the firm in 1980
through the predecessor banks of First National
Bank of Louisville and National City Bank and
worked his way up, gaining broad experience
in a variety of business areas. In 2009, PNC
acquired National City where Chuck was the
Market President for five years. Chuck led the
merger of PNC and National City for his market
which now operates more than 70 offices in
Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee.
PNC serves the four core constituencies of
customers, employees, shareholders and
communities through PNC’s seven core values.
Those values are performance, customer focus,
integrity, diversity, teamwork, respect, and
quality of life. PNC is the nation’s fifth largest
bank and has great scale, but goes to market as
one team serving local customers.
When Chuck is not at PNC he can usually be
found working with other Louisville businesses
and civic leaders, helping as an advocate of
education, quality of life and economic growth.
He is currently active on leadership boards with
21st Century Parks and The Parklands of Floyds
Fork, Greater Louisville Inc., The University of
Louisville Foundation, The University of Louisville
Board of Overseers, The University of Louisville
College of Business, Nucleus, Louisville
Business Leaders for Education, Baptist
Healthcare, and OneWest.
Chuck has used his leadership position in
Nashville to be actively engaged as a Director
of the Nashville Public Education Foundation,
member of Nashville Agenda’s Steering
Committee, and as a member of the Leadership
Council of the Nashville Partnership 2010 and
2020. Chuck received the 2009 University of
Louisville College of Business Alumni Fellow
Award, the 2010 Business First Large Company
Business Leader of the Year Award and the
2013 Boy Scouts of America Lincoln Heritage
Council Scout of the Year Award.
Chuck and Donna have a son and daughterin-law, Joshua and Carolyn, and four
grandchildren.
Diane B. Fischer
Growing up in a
family of thirteen,
Diane learned the
lessons of hard
work, perseverance
and importance
of family. Life on
a dairy farm in
Southern Indiana
was filled with early
mornings, long
growing seasons and Catholic school education.
The entrepreneurial spirit was deeply instilled
from an early age. Her father owned a dairy
farm and also worked for the National Farmers
Organization. Her mother ran the household, a
catering business and worked as a seamstress.
These early influences have aided Diane in
becoming a successful business woman and
community leader.
Before starting L & D Mail Masters, Diane
began her career at Bruce Fox as a customer
service representative. She then moved on
to be a customer service manager for Fire
King International. This position allowed her to
recognize a significant need for a direct mail
firm to handle smaller accounts; Diane used a
$500 investment from her savings account to
start L & D Mail Masters.
Mark E. Lynn O.D.
Mark Lynn was
born in Louisville,
Kentucky in 1959.
He graduated from
Apollo High School
(Owensboro) in
1977 and married
his high school
sweetheart, Cindy
Erwin, in 1979. He
attended Murray State University, majoring in
Engineering Physics and Computer Science.
In1981 he was accepted to Southern College
of Optometry and graduated in 1985 with his
Doctor of Optometry degree.
Dr. Lynn began his career for Dr. Bizer’s
VisionWorld in 1985 in Louisville, Kentucky. In
1988 he became the Chief of Staff and helped
open two new Louisville market offices. In 1991
he became a partner with the Bizer family and
together they opened new locations in Nashville,
Johnson City, Kingsport and Bristol in Tennessee
as well as Lexington and Bowling Green in
Kentucky. He helped grow the Bizer practice
from two locations in 1985 to 19 locations in
1998. In September of 1998 he bought the
practice from the Bizer family.
Diane Fischer is cofounder and president of
L & D Mail Masters. She started the business
in her home in 1986 and has grown the
business into a $29 million dollar company with
a 180,000 square foot campus that employs
110 people. She has been called upon by
companies like HP, Pitney Bowes and industry
publications like What They Think. Diane shares
her expertise with others at national conferences
and on international webinars.
By the end of 1999 he had opened three new
offices in Kentucky and Tennessee. This was the
start of the growth that has the current count
of 81Visionworks offices in six states. This
included taking over 13 locations in Atlanta,
which evolved into 23 Georgia locations. From
2008 to 2015 he has opened over 40 new
locations, with more planned in the future.
Community involvement includes terms on the
local chamber board, River Valley Bank Board
and the Louisville Southern Indiana Bridges
Authority, as well as a position on the New
Albany/Floyd County Education Foundation
Board. Supporting non-profit clients with
sponsorships and in-kind donations furthers her
reach into the community. Diane’s passion is to
encourage lifelong learning among people of all
ages. In 2014, Diane was named Rotarian of the
Year and a Paul Harris Fellow, as well as being
given the Distinguished Hoosier award.
Mark is the current Chairman of the Kentucky
State Fair Board, is active on the University of
Louisville Foundation and Finance Committee
and is a Trustee for Sacred Heart Schools.
He and his family believe in giving back
through involvement and development of the
communities they serve. They work closely
with several groups such as Visually Impaired
Preschool Services, Eastern Area Community
Ministries, Blessings in a Backpack, as well as
taking care of requests by the school systems
for kids in need of vision care and glasses.
Diane married her husband, Steve Fischer in
1978 and went on to have three daughters. Her
family has continued to grow and is currently
up to six grandchildren (plus one puggle).
She works to instill the same lessons of her
childhood, as well as a few new ones, in her
ever growing family.
While spending a lot of time building a business
there is nothing more important to him than
family. Mark and Cindy have four children,
Mark, Mandy, Brittany and Jackie. They also
have 13 grandchildren and spend as much
family time with them as possible.

Some of our region’s most enterprising entrepreneurs are teaming up with
JA to reach high school students with a new one-hour program, JA Spark. In
classroom mentoring sessions, entrepreneurs share what inspired them to start
their own businesses and open students’ eyes to the opportunities provided by
entrepreneurship.
“JA is known for bringing entrepreneurship education into the classroom,” said
Debra Hoffer, president of Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana. “What makes
this initiative different is that it is an intensive, one-hour experience designed
specifically for today’s up-and-coming business owner who might not otherwise
have time in his or her busy day to engage as a mentor to young people.”
Research conducted by JA shows that while young people look up to
entrepreneurs such as Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Theranos’s Elizabeth Holmes
and music impresario Jay Z, today’s teens may be more risk averse than previous
generations and are seeking out mentors and role models to help them gain a
better understanding of how to plan for the future. JA believes it is important to
provide young people with an opportunity to engage with entrepreneurs to help
them better understand the challenges and benefits of starting a business.

Review
A Quarter of a Million Students at the JA
Center: The milestone of reaching 250,000
students with Sam Swope JA BizTown®
and CHASE JA Finance Park® in the James
W. Robinson Junior Achievement Center for
Freedom of Enterprise stands out as the most
significant of 2015. Through these programs
that deliver real life concepts at an age before
bad decisions are made, close to 90% of our
region’s students can connect the relevance
of education to future opportunities. This year,
thanks to a generous grant from the Paul W.
Ogle Foundation, JA was able update worn
equipment and purchase new technology so
that each student visiting JA Finance Park can
create a family budget interacting with a tablet
computer.
Proof That JA Works: A report issued by the
University of Louisville Urban Studies Institute
(using data from the Jefferson County Public
Schools Department of Data Management)
indicated that JA BizTown and JA Finance Park
contributed to rising Math and Reading scores,
as well as Career and College Readiness (CCR)
scores. On top of that, the programs had a
direct impact on increased school attendance.
JA Inspire - Helping Middle School
Students Ponder Career Options:
As part of our region’s “cradle to career”
pipeline, the JA Inspire career fair allowed
students to interact with enthusiastic
corporate representatives who shared
information about their industries. The
eighth graders learned more about STEM
(Science Technology Engineering and
Mathematics) jobs with the program goal of
helping them to make well-informed high
school major choices in plenty of time to
take the coursework they need to achieve
their career goals. The Dow Chemical
Company, UAW Local 862 Ford and 15
other business partners participated in JA
Inspire this year, and the program will be
expanded in Kentucky and Southern Indiana
in 2016.
High School Impact: Having made
dramatic progress toward its goal of
reaching every student in the region four
times with powerful financial literacy, work
readiness and entrepreneurship programs,
JA of Kentuckiana places strong emphasis
on high school programming. JA has
expanded its offerings for this age group,
working to connect the dots between the
classroom and life after high school.
• JA Job Shadow® has allowed caring
volunteer mentors to treat high school
students to a day in an actual workplace.
Nearly 100 teams of business leaders
carved out time to host 2,000 students
with the goal of helping young people to
learn more about real people in real jobs
to inform their career planning. AT&T has
led the way with this powerful program,
opening its doors throughout the year to
students at the highest risk of dropping
out of school. Other employers, including
Ford Motor Company, hosted frequent JA
Job Shadow events.
• JA Startup, a partnership with the
Kentucky Innovation Network and
EnterpriseCorp of Greater Louisville, Inc.,
allowed volunteers throughout the region
to mentor students as they learned the
basics of starting a business. Students
competed for a chance to participate in
the 2015 JA Pitch Competition sponsored
by JP Morgan Chase. Five teams from
local high schools appeared before a
panel of “sharks” at the Bomhard Theater
at the Kentucky Center for the Performing
Arts on April 20, 2015. First place winner
Jeffersontown High School’s team,
Shoelife, took home first place and were
later invited to the Junior Achievement
National Student Leadership Summit in
Washington, D. C.

IMPACTING A GENERATION
Imagine a generation where young people, no matter their
background, know how to budget, save, and invest; a generation
equipped with the confidence and understanding to take control
of their financial futures, their careers and achieve their dreams.
First Savings Charitable Foundation holds that vision and is
ensuring that all students from three Southern Indiana Counties
have the opportunity to experience it. Since 2010, the Foundation
has donated more than $400,000 to provide JA’s deep-impact
programs, JA BizTown and JA Finance Park to 20,700 students.
The Foundation was formed in 2008 as part of the conversion of
First Savings Bank (of Clarksville, Indiana) to a stock organization.
The creation of this foundation was due to First Savings Bank’s
desire to impart value to its service area with the intention of
providing funding for financial education, economic development,
and community vitality.
“I got the privilege to attend JA Sam Swope BizTown with
my 5th grade class. I loved all of it! I was CPA of the bank,
and I learned some of the things they do. As CPA I was
responsible for gathering my bank employees’ information
and putting it into the computer, next I printed out payroll
checks for ‘my employees’. But the best part was if the
CEO had to leave the office, I got to assume control.”
