Dear Friends,
It gives us great pleasure to present the 2015 YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City Annual Report, TOGETHER,
WE MAKE GREAT THINGS POSSIBLE.
With 126 years of service to our community, we know and appreciate the thousands of volunteers, members, staff and
community partners who stand with us each and every day to help strengthen our community through Youth Development,
Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
Because of your support, great things happened for our Association in 2015, and we saw many lives changed for the
better. Our programs continue to improve lives and give our members and participants hope for a brighter future. Whether
we’re striving to close the academic achievement gap or increasing water safety skills, children’s lives are becoming stronger
and more resilient. With programs to enrich and empower youth and adults, we’re seeing positive change daily. As we work
to combat chronic disease, strengthen cancer survivors and engage older adults, we’re building strength in spirit, mind and
body within the diverse communities we serve.
Some of the highlights of 2015 included the opening of our new MAIN STREET Y, our third location in the downtown
Oklahoma City area, and the one-year anniversary of the MITCH PARK Y in Edmond, which is now serving more than 21,000
members. Our Association also completed renovation projects at nearly every one of our branches, enabling our outstanding
staff to better serve our growing membership, and has plans for major renovations in 2016 at YMCA CAMP CLASSEN.
We expanded our LIVESTRONG® AT THE YMCA program and watched as cancer survivors became stronger in spirit, mind
and body. We saw hundreds of volunteers lead service projects in their communities through TOGETHERHOOD™ and we fed
thousands of children through our Year-Round Food Program. We even launched our SLEEP TO SUCCEED program, which
provides beds and mattresses to children who had previously been sleeping on cold tile floors.
Capturing the full scope of the work, energy and excitement of the YMCA OF GREATER OKLAHOMA CITY is no easy task,
but this annual report will chronicle some of the accomplishments of the past year and a few of the people whose lives were
touched by their relationship with the Y.
We constantly strive to expand our horizons and discover new and better ways to meet the changing and growing needs of
our community. As we look to the future, we will continue our commitment to develop innovative new programs, improve and
refine those we already offer and collaborate with others to do it all more efficiently. Thank you for your continued support of
the Y and for making great things possible as we continue to strengthen the foundations of community one person at a time.

EVERY CHILD HAS
GREATNESS INSIDE
OF THEM
Izaira never learned to swim when she was a child and grew up terrified to be in or around the water.
That fear is still with her as an adult, so when she had children of her own, she knew how important it was
to get them involved in swim lessons so they wouldn’t also be afraid of the water. But more importantly,
she didn’t want them to become a statistic. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death
among children 14 and under, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So, Izaira
reached out to the membership director at the EARLYWINE PARK YMCA, and with the help of the Y’s
financial assistance program, she and her husband Enaur were able to enroll their three children in swim
lessons at the Y.
Ashley is the oldest of the three siblings, and at 11 years old, she has been taking swim lessons at the Y for almost two years. Izaira
says that in addition to the life-saving skill of swimming, the physical activity has been beneficial for her daughter. When Ashley first
began swim lessons, she had never been in the water before and started in the polliwog class, a beginner level class. Now she has
progressed to the level of developmental swim league and is thrilled that she will begin swimming with a team soon. Ashley loves the
water so much that she says one day she wants to be a lifeguard.

Melanie is 10 years old and followed in her sister’s footsteps. At first, Melanie was very scared of the water and was afraid to
swim alone. It didn’t take her long to become a great swimmer, and now she is ready for developmental swim league with her sister.
Melanie loves the water so much that she often comes to the Y to swim outside of her regular swim lesson time and says that it’s
“really important for people to know how to swim to the shore if they are in a lake or in a pool, because it could save their life.”
Little Leonel is only 7, but he is a powerhouse in the water. His instructors say that he has really come out of his shell, and the
little boy who would barely talk to them when he began coming to the Y is now “very talkative” and always has a smile on his face especially when he’s in the water. They’ll tell you that it’s fun to watch Leonel improve so quickly, as he is very determined to keep up
with his sisters.
Izaira and her husband Enuar continue to see improvement in their children’s health, their self-esteem and their skill level and are
thankful to the generous donors who make it possible for them to participate in swim lessons at the Y.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
We believe that at it’s best, our Ys not only work with individuals and families of
many backgrounds and circumstances, but foster connections among young people
and across generations. We believe that every child, regardless of race, religion or
background deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. In 2015 we served
kids and teens in the following ways:
Kids gained water safety skills, helping to reduce the incidence of accidental drownings.

STRENGTHENING
SPIRIT, MIND
AND BODY
Dewey has been deaf since he was a small boy, but that hasn’t prevented him from enjoying
a full life. He has always been very involved in his community by teaching and mentoring
other deaf individuals, including two of his four children who were born deaf. That was
until a series of heart attacks left him very ill and in need of a stint in his heart. Dewey’s
doctor was very concerned about his health and informed him that he needed to start
walking for at least 30 minutes a day in order to get healthier and help prevent
additional health problems.
Dewey took his doctor’s advice and began walking on an outdoor track, but he knew that he
couldn’t continue a fitness routine on his own and that he needed assistance and someone
to hold him accountable. During one of his walks, he decided to take a look in the
window at the Y. “I had never stepped inside a YMCA before, but what I saw through
the window that day really intrigued me and I wanted to see more,” said Dewey.
“I didn’t know if I could afford a membership, but decided to take a closer
look anyway.”
When Dewey first made his way inside the Y, he walked right past
the front desk, not realizing that Taylor, the membership
director, was trying to get his attention. After recognizing
that Dewey was deaf, Taylor spent the next several
hours writing notes back and forth with him in an
effort to better understand his specific needs.
The process was very rewarding for Taylor
and she worked to help him finalize his
membership application and apply
for financial assistance. She asked
that in return, he teach her a new word
in sign language every time he visited the
Y. Dewey gladly obliged and over time, he
even began spending some of his time
assisting other deaf members.
After several months at the Y, Dewey began feeling more
energized and gradually increased his physical activity.

Today, he exercises two hours every day and has never felt better. Taylor has learned countless new words in sign
language from Dewey and even attends sign language classes in her spare time. Although she doesn’t consider
herself an expert, she has a true servant’s heart and has been able to help many deaf individuals and families by
assisting them with their membership needs.
“The relationships I have made at the Y have strengthened not only my body, but also my mind and my spirit,” said Dewey.
“I’m so glad that I decided to look in the window that day.” Taylor, on the other hand, said that, “Dewey needed the Y, but in
the end, I needed him.” She continued,“I don’t know if he realizes what he has meant to me.”
Thank you for supporting the YMCA OF GREATER OKLAHOMA CITY and giving individuals like Dewey a place that they can get healthy,
create strong bonds and help others along the way.

HEALTHY LIVING
The Y’s commitment to healthy living starts
with the children we serve, as we work to improve
the health and well-being of kids and inspire habits
they can continue into adulthood. Programs such as the
evidence- based, Food and Fun curriculum are integrated into
the After School and Summer Day camp programs where children
engage in physical activity every day and are exposed to fruits and
vegetables on a weekly basis.
The Y also leads the OK 5210 health initiative, which focuses on the daily numbers to
live by – 5 or more fruits & vegetables, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour of physical
activity and 0 sugary sweetened beverages.

activity and well being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals.

DEDICATED TO
MAKING OUR
COMMUNITY GREAT
Bella, Alex and Libby share the same beautiful smile, but these sisters couldn’t be more different.
Although their personalities are distinctive and unique, each of them found their voice in the Y’s
Youth and Government Program.
Youth and Government is a national program that involves thousands of teens nationwide in state-organized, model-government
activities. Students from every corner of the U.S. have the opportunity to immerse themselves in experiential civic engagement and
practice democracy in its pure form. Hundreds of Oklahoma teens meet throughout the year to discuss and debate issues that affect
citizens of our state and to propose legislation.
Libby, the oldest sister, became involved in Youth and Government when she was a freshman in high school.
Now a sophomore at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., she says that the experience completely changed the
course of her life - for the better. “Youth and Government has given me the opportunity to do so many great things, including acting
as an intern in the government relations and policy office at the YMCA of the USA. That experience allowed
me to see the Y from an entirely different side,” said Libby. “I learned that the Y is so much more than a
gym and swim. The Y is there with support when a community goes through a hard time, and is often
one of the first support systems when there is a disaster. It is often times not something we see,
but something we should appreciate more often. The Y touches the lives of everyone who
encounters it.”
Through her experience with Youth and Government, Libby created a network of
friends, many of whom were older and had moved into the workforce. Through
those connections, she is now working with students from MIT and Harvard
to refine and aggregate big sets of data to help lobbyists and advocacy
groups like the Y better understand how Congress works together.
“Libby came back from a weekend at the Capitol so much more
confident,” said Alex, the middle sister. “She had all of these
new ideas and new concepts that were just over my head,
and seeing that change in her convinced me to join the
program. Throughout my high school experience,
I learned my own strengths and I know that the impact I
leave on the program will be different than Libby. During my
senior year, I took the position of House Chaplain, which allowed
me to spend my senior year in the House and share my faith, which
was very important to me. It was awesome.”

Bella, the youngest sister said that Youth and Government really helped build her confidence. “I was really excited to join so that I
could get involved doing all of the things my sisters had done,” said Bella. “The experience allows me to debate about important topics
that we sometimes don’t get to voice our opinions about in the classroom.”
Being socially responsible means more to these young ladies than it did prior to their involvement in Youth and Government. All three
of them will tell you that their participation has taught them the importance of staying involved in their community and to always care
what is happening at their local, state and federal levels. And their relationships have strengthened over the years as well. “I’ve seen
my sisters grow intellectually as leaders,” said Libby. “We share a unique bond - a strong bond that brings us together. We are, and
will always be, there for each other.“
Their mother, Christi beams when she talks about her girls, saying, “They now feel comfortable to express their opinions in a manner
that is respectful and that helps them in school and in their daily lives. They have learned how to be a part of their community and good
civic leaders even at their young age. It makes me happy knowing that they will continue to be active citizens.”
