Qu'Appelle District Lions Club Celebrate their 40th Anniversary

The club was forced to fold due to lack of members in August 1961. Their last project consisted
of donating four fans and a typewriter to the town hospital.
The second Lions Club formed 15 years later on May 26, 1976 with 33 members. This was the
first year for the Annual Easter Egg Hunt in which over 150 children attended. Also, this was
the start of the Annual Pioneer Supper.
In October 1977, the Lions & Lioness Clubs began a regular weekly Bingo. The final bingo was
December 19, 2000. In 1987, a motion was pasted to allow women into the Lions Club.
In September, 1994, the Lions completed the framework for the Tourist Booth and dedication of
the tourist booth in August 1995.
In 1996, Lion Greg Todd presented the Elsie Campbell award to a JHS student. This was also
one of the best years for Sports Day with a profit of $2000.

The administrator reported that the contract for the cell phones is due for renewal, and advised council that there are less
expensive plans available now. Council
gave him the authority to research the
plans and select the best for our needs.

Qu’Appelle Town Council met for a regular meeting on Mar. 17, 2009 at Town
Hall. Present were Mayor Allan Arthur,
Councillors Brian Bogdan, Elizabeth
Fries, Mike Lenzen and Nicole Nyhus,
and Assistant Administrator Jennifer
Sharpe. Absent were Councillor Linda
Andrew and Administrator Carol Wickenheiser.
The minutes of the Feb. 24, 2009 regular
meeting of Council were accepted as circulated and read.
Correspondence was read and filed. The
statement of financial activities for February and the list of payments for approval
were accepted.
It was agreed in principle to extend the
lease agreement with the Qu’Appelle
Handgun Club.
Council agreed to sell Lots 19 & 20,
Block 199, Plan Old 83 to SaskTel for the
construction of a self-support cellular tower and small equipment building.
Reports were filed from the Town Foreman and RCMP.
A bylaw to regulate the operation and
parking of vehicles and the use of the
highways was read and third and final
time.
A brief open discussion followed and the
meeting was adjourned at 8:00pm.

The next regular meeting of Town Council is scheduled for May 19 at 7:00pm.
The annual ratepayers’ supper and
meeting was held at the McLean hall on
Friday April 3rd with 90 persons including councillors, staff and guests, in
attendance. George MacPherson was
the chairman for the evening.
It had been reported to council that a
large number of dead cattle have been
left in a field. This prompted obvious
concerns about disease and predators,
and the department of agriculture and the
Food Inspection Agency were contacted
to look into the matter.
Preliminary budget discussions were
held, but the mill rate cannot be set until
after April 15th, by which date we
should receive information from the
province regarding revenue sharing for
this year. A special meeting of council
will be held on April 21st to finalise the
budget, and to attend to other items of
outstanding business.
In his report Reeve Ken MacPherson
gave some facts and figures of last
year’s activities, including the number
of yards of gravel used for a total cost
of $78,476.00. The administrator reported on projects in the plans for this year,
including the expansion of the RM office. The cost for this will be covered by
a grant from the Municipal Economic
Enhancement Program.
Council approved a motion to hire Keith
Engineering to prepare the blueprint for
the office expansion. Gravel crushing
and hauling will be awarded to the same
contractors as last year, who have offered last years prices.
The Guest speaker, MP Andrew Scheer,
gave an interesting address about his
work in parliament and answered many
questions on matters of concern to residents. Our MLA, Minister of Health
Don McMorris, also attended the meeting.
Various items of correspondence were
circulated for the information of councillors, including new policy wording for
the SARM excess liability insurance.
The regular council meeting was held
on May 7th. Tenders for the bridge replacement project were received and
opened, but no tender was awarded, as
council had some concerns about the
design of the work. Councillors went to
inspect the site, and further questions
will be put to the engineer, the Ministry
of highways and to the RMs solicitor
before the tender is awarded.
Councillor Whalen reported on the recent regional library meeting. Provincial
library funding has been increased by
2.5 percent, but there will also be a 50
cent per capita increase in the library
levy. This will amount to $9,018 for
2009 for our RM.
One ongoing subdivision application and
one new application were approved.

The Regional Science Fair

Administrator’s Message
The other day, bright and early, I was on my way to school and who did I see
but Harvey Betteridge on the grounds of the Kiddies Park with garbage bag
and garbage picker in tow. When I stopped to chat with him I found out that
such was his morning ritual, and when I lamented over the environmental
efforts of our kids, I noticed there was no garbage barrel…. to which Harvey
suggested he could get one. I proceeded to talk about the problem with garbage pick up wherein Harvey mentioned he could put a garbage bag in the
barrel and empty it regularly. As I left I marveled at what a fine citizen of our
community Harvey is. He does what he does not for any thanks or attention,
not for self benefit, but simply because he knows it’s a good thing to do.
That’s what makes communities strong and what we want for all of our kids.
Accordingly, JHS has a strong focus on service activities (town cleanups,
flower planting, tree planting, recycling projects), relationship building activities (school family events, senior lunches, cross grade buddies, positive mail),
and leadership activities (greetings, assemblies, charities) because we want
our kids to be well rounded citizens who do the right thing. We know that
doing things for the well being of others and for the betterment of the community be it school, town or world will make this world a better place for all.
Celebration of Learning and Multiple Intelligences
JHS invites all parents, caregivers, family and friends to our seventh annual Celebration of Learning on May 20 at 7:30 p.m. This evening has been set aside to celebrate
and acknowledge all of our students’ strengths under the umbrella of the multiple
intelligences. We believe all of our students are important, possess talents and are
worthy of recognition.
Research has led to the identification of eight intelligences: visual- spatial (art smart);
musical- rhythmic (music smart); bodily-kinaesthetic (movement smart); naturalist
(outdoors smart); interpersonal (reflective smart); intrapersonal (people smart); verbal
-linguistic (book smart) and logical-mathematical (numbers smart) existentialist
(world thinking smart). We have found that for our world to function in an efficient,
fun and caring manner all intelligences are necessary. Imagine a world filled only
with scientists, musicians, naturalists or mathematicians etc. Obviously, the world
would look very different than it does today and there would be considerable voids.
Diversity, truly, is what makes our world so interesting and a functional place to live.
On Tuesday March 31, 2009, Greenhall
High School in Balgonie hosted the Regional Science Fair. James Hamblin
School sent along six exhibits from its
own science fair held earlier that month
to the competition. The students who
attended demonstrated great participation in the day’s activities and exemplified our well known JHS spirit! Students who competed were:

Mariah Fries and Tori Hardock for receiving the Bronze medal in the Life
Sciences Junior Division. Awesome

April passed by in a blur with our Spirit Days and Skittle Week. Our Spirit Days included Sweatpants Day and Jersey Day. Our Skittle week was held April 6th to 8th. Red & Green Day was on the Monday, Orange & Yellow Day on the 7th, and Blue & Purple Day
on the Wednesday. Each period three class collected points based on people that dressed up for the days and on how many skitt le-ograms they bought. The English B30 class came out on top and was awarded with a pizza lunch. Thank you to everyone who participated.
At the end of April and now going into May the SRC started a hockey tournament to mark the start of NHL playoffs. Games are at
noon and are being held on May 5th, 7th and 12th. Semifinals are being held on the 14th and 19th. The final will be held on the 21st,
s6th and 28th if needed.
May marks the end of the old SRC and the start of the new SRC. Nomination forms were to be in by April 27th. The interviews will
then take place that week. On the 1st paper for posters will be available for the nominees to make posters. From the 4th to 7th they
will be able to campaign. On the 7th at period 3 elections will be held. The SRC Election Dance will be held later that night where
the winners will be announced. Positions open include Sr. and Jr. Treasurer, Secretary, President, Vice President, Public Relations,
Two Social Convenors, Female and Male Sport Reps, Two Grade 10 Reps, and Members at Large.
In June the old and new SRC will come together and work at the Indian Head Spring Carnival on the 27th. The SRC will have inflatable boxing and a spin will. There will be a small entry fee. We hope to see everyone come out and have fun.

LOCAL ATHLETES ATTEND KARATE TOURNAMENT
On Saturday, March 28, 2009 three members from the Qu’Appelle Karate Club
competed at the Saskatchewan Karate Association Spring Provincial Tournament in
Wadena, SK.
Emily Scott and Carson Bennett competed in the 10 & under novice division. Emily
competed in the kata (patterns) event, while Carson competed in both the kata and kumite (sparring) events. Jonathon Daver-Aksomitis competed in the 1113 year intermediate kata division. Congratulations to Carson who was able to obtain a bronze medal
in the 10 & under kata event.
The Qu’Appelle Karate Club is extremely proud of the young athletes who participated
at the SKA Spring Tournament.

Several months have passed since August 24, 2008, the day Dorrie
Ann Kinrade left her earthly life due to Myxomatous Mitral Valve Sudden Death.
Time passes, lonely, difficult, empty, heartbreaking days and nights.
Time passes, days and nights filled with loving memories, gratitude, and thankfulness.
To simply say “thank-you” doesn’t seem
enough—yet how can we ever fully express our
appreciation and gratefulness for all the kindnesses, generosity, understanding, patience,
words of encouragement and support, given in
love to us through visits, cards and letters,
phone calls, gifts of flowers, food and time,
emotional support, donations to the Kinrade-Malbeuf Children’s Trust
Fund,
Dorrie’s spouse Brent Malbeuf and their boys, Jaden, Harley, and
Rylan Kinrade-Malbeuf are learning how to travel new paths in life
without Dorrie—Mom.

gift of remembering times shared with Dee.

Congratulations to Mr. Whalley and his PAA class. Not only did they host a fantastic Family Movie Night, but as well made a
profit of 214.00 for their program.
Mr. Radwanski and his troupe of nine badminton players culminated their season by enjoying an afternoon of round robin play
on Apr. 4.
Our grades 4-6 students were entertained by an afternoon performance of The Music Ambassadors Program at Indian Head.
Tickets to the symphony were won by Mathew Kuntz and Christian Hawke
Congratulations to the Jazzy HumSingers Choir who participated in the Mainline Music Festival and garnered scores of 84 and
85. Also, the grade 3 coral speaking group received first place marks of 85 and 87 and the grade 4/5 stole the show with best
speech choral of the festival with marks of 88 and 88.
Hippity - Hoppity Easter was on its way as the grade nine leadership class donned bunny ears, pink noses and lots of goodies
for the Easter treat hunt they put on for the elementary students. What a great group of leaders!
A warm welcome was extended to author Mary Harelkin-Bishop for her visit and presentation to our elementary students. She
is the well know author of the Tunnel series based in Moose Jaw.
EARTH was the theme as our students met in school family groups on Earth Day, listened to a letter from Mother Earth and
responded with their promises to do their part in protecting our Earth.
Marcel Shevalier, an addictions counselor from the Regina Qu’Appelle Health District, captivated our grades 6-9 with his stories and advice about nicotine and addictions.
James Hamblin was the host site for our latest Regional Student Leadership Meeting on Apr. 22, and two long term members
(Jessica Betteridge and Kaela Witkowski) were selected to make a presentation to the PSDV Board Members on student leadership. Good Luck, Ladies!
H m-m-m let’s see who is lurking behind those masks. On April 30 the students had a blast adorning themselves with masks at
our masquerade spirit day.
Ending April on a high was the JHS Drama performance of The Fez. Congratulations to the staff and students who worked so

MacKenzie Art Gallery Exhibition at JHS
Troy Nursery School Co-operative was formed
by a group of local parents more than 25 years
ago, who saw a need for an organized preKindergarten program in our community. It
has evolved over the years, making the move
into an empty classroom at James Hamblin
School 5 years ago.
The Mackenzie Art Gallery of Regina, through its Provincial Outreach Program, is pleased to bring the exhibition, Inuit Art: The
Williamson Collection.

is an on-going learning process for all

The Williamson collection was assembled during the many years Dr. Robert Williamson spent living among the Inuit, researching
their culture.
His arrival in the North in 1952 coincided with the beginning of a period of great change. The forces of acculturation were brought to
older artists certainly, Williamson was aware that much of traditional culture persisted and that this contemporary art form provided
an avenue for meaningful communication. Even for many of the younger artists, the production of art which reflected traditional lifestyles, attitudes and beliefs became, in part, a means of cultural affirmation. The works on display were chosen from eighty-five recently donated to the MacKenzie Art Gallery by Dr. Robert Williamson.
A public viewing will be held May 28th at 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the JHS Library. All are welcome.

Orientation Meeting
On Wednesday, May 13th at 7:30 p.m.,
there will be an orientation meeting at
JHS for parents of children who will
begin kindergarten during the 2009-2010
school year. Children who will turn 5
years old by December 31, 2009, are
eligible to register for kindergarten. You

Prairie Valley Introduces 310 Minute Day
for 2009-2010 School Year
On April 22, 2009 the Prairie Valley School Division Board of Education approved the 310 minute day calendar as the model to be applied for the 20092010 school year and endorsed a 14 day Christmas break as well as a break in
February.
The proposed calendar structure is designed around 930 hours of student contact time, utilizing a 310 minute day for 180 days per school year and representing an overall increase in student contact time of up to 40 hours in some
schools. This is directly reflective of the need for increased contact time between students and teachers across the division, as identified in the Calendar
Year Review Final Report, authored by Dr. Larry Sackney.
The recommended 310 minute day calendar option was presented to the board
by a 22 person Internal Working School Calendar Review Committee earlier
this year.
The Calendar Year Review consultation process included eight regional public
meetings as well as meetings with administrators, teachers and staff. Board
Chair Janet Kotylak said, “Data was collected during the consultation process,
from the table groups at the public and staff consultations, individual responses, comments provided through the online feedback form, by email and by
phone. The board used the feedback to modify the proposed 310 calendar model to incorporate some of the lifestyle preferences, such as a February break,
identified as important to parents and staff, while still staying true to the belief
statements on student engagement, student learning and student achievement.”
Kotylak said, “The board’s decision is supportive of the seven belief statements developed by the Calendar Review Committee to enhance student learning, one of which states that the division believes in a united Prairie Valley
School Division that honours the diversity of our individual schools and communities within the unifying framework of a culture of learning.”
Information on the 2009-2010 school year calendar is available on the Prairie
Valley School Division website at www.pvsd.ca. Under the new model, all
Prairie Valley students will return to school after Labour Day on September 8,
2009.

Lioness Club
The Qu’Appelle District Lioness Club held their April meeting on Tuesday, April 14,
2009 at the Greenwood Manor commencing at 7:30 p.m. Present were Eva, Diane,
Eileen, Donna B, Mary, Cathy, Lorraine, Sheila, Linda, Liz and Donna S. President
Eva called the meeting to order, and the secretary Eileen read the minutes and moved
they be adopted as read, seconded by Diane. Carried. The treasurer Diane read the
monthly financial report. Diane moved her report be accepted, seconded by Linda.
Carried...The correspondence received was reviewed and required no action to be taken
at this time. Old Business included finalizing the Pioneers Supper coming up on April
19, 2009, that each member is asked to bring two pies to sell for the First Anniversary
of Double“TT” Grocers on June 6, 2009, with the Pie Booth opening at 10 a.m.; and
that posters are up and tables are being booked for the Spring Craft/Bake Sale to be
held on Saturday, May 9, 2009. It was decided that the Lioness will have their own
table, with brochures to promote becoming a Lioness member, and a Mother’s Day
Basket to raffle, (each member being asked to donate something appropriate for the
basket). General setup will be done on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. New Business included Linda making a motion, seconded by Donna S. to hire Harvey Betteridge as the
Lioness Kiddies Park maintenance person from May 1 to September 1, 2009. Carried.
Liz adjourned the meeting at 8:35 p.m. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday,
May 12, 2009 commencing at 7:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Manor.

33rd Annual Pioneer Supper

District
Lions Club
A busy month the Lions Club.
The Qu'Appelle Lions Club held two meetings this month. On April 6, meeting was
at the Lions Hall with 9 members present. We discussed final plans for the Pioneer
supper. Thank you to Lion Jerry and Lion Dennis for installing our new sign on the
front of the hall. Lion Jerry gave a report on ticket sales for the BBQ. Tickets can
be purchased until and including June 20th, Sports Day.
April 11 was our annual Easter egg hunt with approximately 25 people in attendance.
The annual Pioneer supper was held on Sunday, April 19 at the Lions hall at
5p.m. Approximately 70 seniors were in attendance.
Roast beef supper was served by the Lions and entertainment by Dick Carr. Thank
you to the Lioness for preparing a delicious supper and helping with the cleanup. Mr. Morrell was the oldest senior in attendance at the age of 92.
The monthly supper meeting was held at the McLean Hotel on April 20. We were
treated to a delicious meal. Nine members were present. Chair people of events were
chosen for our upcoming Sports Day. The Lions will be doing highway cleanup the
second Saturday in May.

Activities
Fashion Show
Activities for the month of April have
slowed down in anticipation of Spring
arriving. I know, we are being optimistic, especially in view of the very cool
temperatures and the dusting of snow
these last few days. None the less many
of us are planning our gardens and window shopping for flowers to brighten our
yards.
Cribbage, Canasta and the Pot Luck Supper and Bingo went ahead as scheduled in
April and enjoyed good participation.
All those events will again take place in
May. The Pot Luck Supper and Bingo
on May 29th will be the last one of the
season so do come out and join us.
Our last Club event for this season will be
a Fashion Show on June 3rd at the Seniors Hall.

Creekside Gardens is a beautiful, peaceful
oasis located on the east side of our community. At the end of March, a shocking
act of vandalism occurred at the site, and
it has left the owners upset and puzzled. Pictures show what was done to a
greenhouse, chairs and tables, with the
tables taking the brunt of the destruction. As this was not the first time
Creekside Gardens had been vandalized
over the winter months, the RCMP are
investigating. The owners have worked
very hard over the past few years to make
this a lovely spot for Qu’Appelle residents
and visitors to enjoy. The grounds are
immaculate, the campground is wellequipped, and the area is very generously
offered as the location of Qu’Appelle’s
Canada Day celebrations. It would be a
shame and a disgrace if we lost this amenity in our town, simply because a few selfish people decided to be so immature and
destructive!
The FFOH held their 7th annual Ladies Night Out and Auction fundraiser on March
21, 2009. The event was held in the Lions Community Hall this year and proved to be
another huge success, raising over $7500.00, a new record! Some of the highlights of
the evening included the many great auction items to bid on, a delicious desert buffet
and entertainment from country music singer Brandy Young of Vibank. This year
there was also a Diamond Balloon pop where although all balloons presented a prize,
one lucky lady went home with a $300 gift certificate to Fire and Ice Jewellery in Regina. Perhaps one of the most entertaining segments was the auctioning off of male
table servers for the evening! A very special Thanks to the gentlemen who were gracious enough to serve our patrons desert, beverages and even provide safe rides home!
Forever Friends would like to thank all those that came out to support this event and
look forward to planning another fun filled evening next year!

Seniors Centre. There will be a potluck supper following the AGM; spouses are welcome to join us for supper. All members are encouraged and welcome to attend both
the monthly board meetings as well as the AGM. Anyone with questions is welcome

Worker. The successful applicant will work for the Public Works & Utilities Department
performing a variety of duties to help maintain the town.

possess a minimum Grade 12/GED
hold a valid 3A driver’s license
have experience with the operation of heavy equipment
have or be willing to obtain Class 1 certification in Water & Wastewater Systems
be willing to work extra hours and weekends when required

Patches was an exuberant colt; stealing fencing materials, opening gates and
chasing Marian to the barn. When the time came for breaking, Dave found out
just how fast a pony could actually move, but he got the job done. Patches became a constant companion for Colleen over the next 10 years. He went everywhere and did everything with her. They chased cows, fixed fence, visited neighbours, and took plenty kids for rides.
Over the years, Patches took part in many horse shows and trail rides. Kyla and
Danielle both competed in barrel racing with him. Anyone that wanted to learn to
ride got to ride on Patches. He retired from trail rides in 2007 and stayed close to
the barn, mostly because Jamie was always around with feed for him.
He loved to munch on dandelions and would always greet you with a whinny
when it was feeding time. A wake will be held one fine summer evening to share
memories.

Patches passed away on Thursday, April 23rd with his family by his side at the
acreage in Qu'Appelle. He was born 32 years ago in Tyvan, SK to owner Keith
Young. Patches, and his mother Taffy, arrived at the Stephen farm in the spring
of 1977.
