AUCTION Meade celebrates Kids` Fest 2016
PAGE 8B THE MEADE COUNTY MESSENGER, BRANDENBURG, KENTUCKY THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 2016 Meade celebrates Kids’ Fest 2016 readiness. They are language and communication, general knowledge and mathematics, approaches to learning, health and physical well-being and social and emotional development. The Kentucky Governor’s Office of Early Childhood defines school readiness as “each child enters school ready to engage in and benefit from early learning experiences that best promote the child’s success.” Some of the skills that a child needs to enter kindergarten are: knowing their full name and birthday, uses pictures to tell stories, listens daily to a book being read, identifies basic colors, recognizes general shapes, counts up to 30, counts sets of objects up to 10, sorts and classifies objects (by color, size or shape), plays in groups or pairs, and is learning to work alone. The entire Kids’ Fest is full of tasks that engage children in these specific areas. This is all done in a fun, yet challenging manner with booths set up by local vendors. This years Kids’ Fest had many different booths for children to visit. They were: North Hardin Lions Club, Meade County Extension Homemakers, Meade County Extension Office/Family and Consumer Science, 4-H Youth Owen Sermonis, son of Derek and Rachel Sermonis showed how he could write his name at the United Way of Central Kentucky booth. By ANNIE HAMILTON Messenger Staff For the fourth year in a row Brandenburg Primary has been the site for Kid’s Fest in Meade County. The event is geared for children from birth to age 5. The goal is to promote school readiness so that parents know what is needed to help their child be ready to enter kindergarten. This is all done through the Meade County Community Early Childhood Council. Before a child enters kindergarten the Meade County Community Early Childhood Council provides parents information and what’s needed to teach the skills their children need to be ready for kindergarten. There are five developmental areas for school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here was a Literacy booth that allowed children to sit and listen to a story being read to them. Squire Boone Caverns used stuffed animals to show and teach the children the animals that were indigenous to the area. Another popular booth with the children was Lincoln Trail District Health Department. They had a stuffed alligator with large teeth and a large toothbrush. This helped them with their dental hygiene and proper brushing techniques. The Meade County Sheriff ’s Office offered finger printing for children for parents to have a set of children’s fingerprints on file. There were also many, many other booths that taught children and parents new and entertaining approaches to learning. Meade County Kindergarten and Preschool registration is currently underway for the 2016-2017 school year. Kindergarten Development, Squire Boone Caverns, Meade County Sheriff ’s Department, City of Brandenburg/Citizens on Patrol, Communicare, First Steps, Meade County Public Library, Lincoln Trail District Health Department, Meade County Head Start, Meade County Schools, Meade County Preschool, Humana CareSource, Meade County Health Department and United Way of Central Kentucky. Each booth provided a fun activity for children to not only foster learning, but also play and learning time in a large group setting. Children learned about vegetables and Health and Physical Well-being at the Meade County Extension Office/Family and Consumer Science booth. Children planted their own cherry tomato seeds in pots of dirt to not only work their fine motor skills, but also learn where food comes from. The North Hardin Lions Club took photos of children’s eyes to detect if they had any astigmatism or vision issues.
