Magnificent Musical Talents
The tradition of talent continues.
USD 226 has a history of being blessed with musically talented students. To
have this kind of tradition takes a commitment from all levels. We have a school
board and administration that understands the value of music education in our
schools. Our students have dedicated music instructors who are willing to go
above and beyond to teach and expand our students' musical abilities. Mr. Klaker
and Mr. Rempel also seek and provide opportunities for our students to showcase
their musical talents. Last, but not least, we have students who are willing to grow
and share their musical talents. From our grade school to our high school, we
have musical talents worth bragging about.
Mr. Rempel is pleased to announce that five of his sixth grade choir students
were selected to perform in the SWKMEA District Honor Choir on January 23 at
2:00 in the afternoon at Dodge City Middle School. They will be performing with
about 150 students from the Southwest Kansas area. The five students selected
were: Ian Unruh, Zack Volden, Melia Friesen, Kiana Unruh, and Allie
Miller. Congratulations to these students.
Mr. Klaker is proud to announce that six of his Junior High Vocal students
auditioned and were selected to perform in the SWKMEA Middle School Honor
Choir at Dodge City Middle School on January 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. They will
perform with 200 other Junior High students from the Southwest Kansas
area. Students selected were: Nathaniel Reimer, tenor, Jonoh Hughes, bass,
Monica Gleason, alto, Ali Unruh, soprano, DJ Beachy, bass, and Jonathan Unruh,
tenor. Congratulations to these students.
Five of Mr. Klaker's High School Choir students auditioned and were selected
to perform in the SWKMEA High School District Honor Choir on Saturday
December 5, 2015 @ 3:00 p.m. This will take place at Dodge City High
School. These students will perform with about 200 other vocal students from the
Southwest Kansas area. Students representing MHS are Ashley Harp, alto,
Amanda Kastens, soprano, Maya Hartnett, soprano, Brooke Keith, soprano, and
Aspen Hanks, soprano. Congratulations to these students on their hardwork.
At the start of the school year the Kansas Music Educators Association opens
up auditions for junior high vocal students to earn a chance to sing in the KMEA
All-State Choir. This choir is comprised of 200 students from across the full state
of Kansas. Mr. Klaker is pleased to announce that out of 900 entries across the
State, Nathaniel Reimer was one of the 200 selected to perform in the All-State
Choir. Nathaniel auditioned on a Latin piece, recorded in class, and submitted to a
panel of judges. Nathaniel will perform with this choir on February 26, 2016 at the
KMEA Convention at Century II Concert Hall. Congratulations on this huge honor!

Orphans Find Good Homes in
Meade...Or did they????
The 7th and 8th grade students of MJH set out the morning of
October 29 looking for loving families to adopt them for a day.
Wonderful volunteers from the community came to help these
students bring their novel to life by re-enacting an Orphan Train
placing out.
The students arrived to SunnyDale historical schoolhouse by
way of our local Orphan Train(The Meade County Trolley) dressed
as orphans from the 1800s. Upon their arrival to the schoolhouse,
their caretakers, agents of the Children’s Aid Society, prepared
them to enter the schoolhouse and look their best, in the hopes
that each orphan would be chosen and “adopted” by a community
member. The orphans were a bit surprised at the large crowd
eagerly waiting for them, ready to bicker with other foster parents
over which child would suit them best. The students hoped to be
part of a good, kind and loving family; but as was the case
historically, that didn’t happen for all of them. There were foster
families looking for children to love and those looking for children
to provide cheap labor for farm work, babysitting or pig butchering.
Some foster parents were rather boisterous about their
expectations and lifestyle. Once the foster families signed their
contracts to assume responsibility for their orphans, they walked
to the courthouse lawn to enjoy a picnic lunch together. As was
the sad reality in history, not all orphans were adopted. They had
to return to the train and eat with their caretakers.
Over lunch, the new families got to know each other.
Orphans learned what would be expected of them and what they
could anticipate as far as living conditions and family
responsibilities.
Foster parents learned about each of the
orphans’ stories that brought them on the Orphan Train to Kansas.
Some orphans were excited about their wonderful new family.
Others wondered just what they had gotten themselves into with
tales of pig butchering, chores of cleaning pig insides and hours of
work with little food. The foster parents were very imaginative in
creating scenarios for our orphans to be a part of.
Our experience only lasted a short time as we dismissed after
our picnic lunch, but the interaction with the community left each
student with a great ability to understand and visualize the reality
of orphans in the 1800s.
This greatly broadened our
understanding of our novel we’ve been reading, A Family Apart.
Many thanks to the volunteers that made our Placing Out not
only a fantastic learning experience, but a hugely entertaining
experience as well! Check the school Facebook page for many
more pictures.
