President’s Message
AHAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Dear Auxilians,
As many of you know one of our past presidents has passed away. Jane
Texter was a very active member of her own Auxiliary, UAMS Medical Center, as
well as our State Board. She took care of many small details dealing with our
convention that helped make it run smoothly. Jane was currently serving as Chair of
the Advisory Committee of Past Presidents and on the Handbook committee. She
was a mentor to many Auxiliary members of our state, including myself. Jane will be
greatly missed by many and our hearts go out to her family and many friends.
Summer is upon us. I hope everyone is staying cool inside and out of the
heat. Family reunions have their best attendance during this time of the year and
mine was no exception. We had 32 at my house on Saturday, July 2nd and those
were the ones that were available come.
Back to business. All should have turned in the state forms. Please, send
the correct forms to the correct people. Darlene, Lynn, Melissa, Carolyn and I all
need to put your information on forms for the new state handbook. The handbook is
then sent to the printer. They need time to have it printed for the convention in
October.
Another reminder. Please send the names of the members that have
passed away in the last year to Pamela Wagner, our Newsletter Editor. She will
need following information: the member’s name, Auxiliary and District. You may
submit the information by e-mailing her at pamelakae@suddenlink.net, snail mailing
or phoning to her home. Remember the last newsletter I will use for the names will
be the September/October issue with a submission deadline of September 1st.
At the installation of officers at Siloam Spring Memorial our placemats had
interesting take on life’s lessons. This was composed by Diane Winder, their
President. I thought you might enjoy it as much as I did.
Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah’s Ark. 1)
Don’t miss the boat. 2) Remember that we are all in the same boat. 3) Plan ahead.
It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark. 4) Stay fit. When you’re 600 years old,
someone may ask you to do something really big. 5) Don’t listen to critics; just get
on with the job that needs to be done. 6) Build your future on high ground. 7) For
safety sake, travel in pairs. 8) Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on
board with the cheetahs. 9) When you’re stressed, float
a while. And, 10) Remember, the Ark was built by
amateurs, the Titanic by professionals.

MedicAlert© Update

I am happy to announce that AHAA and Medic Alert have entered into a second year of
partnership. The contract has been signed and they are happy that we will continue to promote
Medic Alert. This year we have it in writing that the renewal fee will not increase. They have also
assured me that enrollment fees will remain the same.
I want to thank the twenty-six auxiliaries that have signed on to the revised Medic Alert program.
Now for the remaining forty, I say, pick up the phone or email Claudine Sherron and get signed up.

Medic Alert has a new graphic designer and will soon have new brochures for AHAA to distribute.
I have seen a copy and they look great. Hope to have them by our fall district meetings to share

program as well as HELP, WHALE, and Scholarship Programs. You are touching so many lives
through your efforts in our state projects. Thanks for all you do for your auxiliary and AHAA.

AHAA Bylaws – Proposed Changes (Reason for change in blue)
Article VI. Officers
Section 4. Nominees for the office of president-elect shall have served on the AHAA Board of Directors in an
elected position for at least two (2) years in the past four (4) years and shall not have previously served as
AHAA President.
(The number of people eligible will increase and they will have more experience.)
Section 9. Add the appointed position of State Scholarship Chair.
(The responsibilities of a Chair to coordinate the State Scholarship will be defined in Policies and Procedures.)

Clarifications
In order to clarify the difference between the AHAA State Scholarship and the state project of
encouraging scholarship participation by auxiliaries at the local level, the following will be shown as a
freestanding statement in the Handbook.
AHAA State Scholarship
The AHAA Board, in 2004/2005, seriously considered the shortage of nurses and other medical
professionals in the State of Arkansas. After a great deal of discussion by the Board, a
committee was appointed and following their recommendation the Board established an AHAA
Scholarship to be available to Arkansas residents, which would be awarded at UAMS. Two
scholarships were to be granted each year (providing funding was available) one in the College
of Nursing, the other in the College of Health Related Professions, each in the amount of
$2,000. This was seen as a way for our state organization to address the critical need for
nurses and other health care professionals as the students continue their education to meet
these needs.
Under the State Projects definition in the Handbook, add:
Auxiliaries are encouraged to support scholarship programs in their local communities. Our
state has an excellent network of community colleges and other institutions of higher learning
that have programs for nurses and other medical professionals. Many of our auxiliaries support
scholarship programs for students in their own communities. If an auxiliary would like to
participate in the support of scholarships and is unable to do this at a local level, they are
encouraged to make a donation to AHAA as the state organization does support a scholarship
program.

Jane Starke Curtis Texter
To honor her service, the AHAA Board has voted to donate $500.00 to the Jane Texter Memorial Fund at UAMS
Jane Starke Curtis Texter died June 2, 2011. She was born in Richmond, Virginia to Phyllis Morrison Curtis
Longmore and Thomas Starke Curtis.
She graduated from Fairfax Hall School in Waynesboro, Virginia. She received a Bachelor‟s of Arts Degree in
English from the University of North Carolina and was a lifetime member of Chi Omega Epsilon Chapter. She
attended Katherine Gibbs School in New York City, New York. She enjoyed extensive foreign travel to England,
Ireland, Scotland, Austria, France, Italy, Germany and China.
She was a dedicated hospital volunteer for over 60 years and was very generous with her time to UAMS Medical
Center Auxiliary, Doctors Hospital Auxiliary, Southwest Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Winthrop P. Rockefeller
Cancer Institute Auxiliary, Scott & White Clinic Auxiliary in Temple, Texas and Passavant Memorial Auxiliary in
Chicago, Illinois. She was very active in the Arkansas Hospital Association and served in many positions on the
State Board of Directors of AHAA. She received The Clara Barton Honor Award for Meritorious Volunteer Service
and The Chairman Award for Outstanding and Dedicated Service from the American Red Cross. She was a
member of DAR.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, E. Clinton Texter, Jr. M.D., whom she
married February 19, 1949 st Saint Albans United States Naval Hospital in Long Island, New York; and her
daughter, Patricia Ann Texter Hardage. She is survived by her two daughters, Catherine Texter Baker and
husband Everett John Baker, Jr., and Phyllis Cardew Texter; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Starke Baker and
Everett John Baker, III; and her son-in-law, A. Carter Hardage.
A memorial service was held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 9, 2011 at St. Mark‟s Episcopal Church in Little Rock.

METROPOLITAN DISTRICT
Carol Trammel, District Chair
Baptist Health – North Little Rock:  Submitted by Linda Scott, Volunteer Coordinator.  A President‟s
reception was held for the incoming Auxiliary President, Len Tanner, with the honoree and his family as
special guests. All volunteers were invited to come, as well as employees who work directly with the
volunteers, to enjoy refreshments and get to know Len better.  The summer Volunteen Program is
underway with twenty-four currently serving for seven weeks this summer. They are able to spend time
in different units as well as the preschool area.  Our Gift Shop has been transformed into a summer
oasis. Several new items have arrived and the shop is bustling with activities. Employees come in every
week just to see what is new. A one day Clear Out the Warehouse Sale was held in June to make room
for the new, exciting fourth quarter merchandise with items being marked down by 80%. The sale
proved to be a huge success!  A uniform sale will be held July 25 and 26. This sale is always very
well received by employees of the hospital as well as the surrounding doctor‟s offices.
St. Vincent Morrilton – Morrilton:  Submitted by Delores Hartman, Auxiliary President.  Our
members really did a great job selling tickets for our Memorial Day drawing as we exceeded our sales
of previous years. Members Rosa Rickrode and Delores Hartman, President, presented the Memorial
Day “Out Door Fun” Cooler to Bernadette Welcher of Morrilton. The cooler was filled with many items,
as well as a Petit Jean Meats Deluxe Gift Box and Petit Jean Hot Dogs donated by Morrilton Packing
Co., gift cards from Wal Mart and Kroger and a
BBQ apron monogrammed by Russ and Peggy
Jennings. All money raised will benefit the
healing ministry of St. Vincent Morrilton.  We
welcomed Tammy Smith aboard as our new
Volunteer Coordinator and she installed our
officers for the coming year.  We have no
major fundraisers during the summertime. With
so many members taking vacations and
enjoying their families during the summer we
mainly concentrate on keeping our assigned

Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute – Little Rock: Submitted by Jane T. Lowe, CVM, DVS.  On
June 15th, the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute reopened the renovated first floor of the Walker
Tower. It includes the Patient Pavilion, The Gathering Place Café , Rockefeller Cancer Institute
Auxiliary Gift Shop and the Cancer Institute Volunteer Services Suite. The volunteer staff and
volunteers are thrilled with the new suite. It consists of a large work room that is also used for breaks
and meetings, the director‟s office, modular offices for the assistant director and volunteer coordinator
along with one for the volunteers when they have a project or are completing training online. Everyone
is glad to be out of temporary quarters and back on the first floor with more room than ever before. 
Partners Card preparation is well underway. This fundraiser will be October 28th through November 6th
with more than 150 stores participating in central and northwest Arkansas.

NORTH CENTRAL DISTRICT
Sharon Huffmire, District Chair
Baptist Health Medical Center – Heber Springs:  Submitted by Holly Langster.  Our Auxiliary
has had a very busy start to the summer with some exciting
and successful ventures! In May we (of course) partied
hard with the hospital staff during hospital week hosting
massages for nursing, the dessert bar for the hospital
cookout and cake deliveries for every department in the
hospital. We also held a uniform sale which was hugely
successful in both profits and satisfied customers! June had
fewer activities with only one major event; a jewelry and
purse sale. However, the planning has begun for the annual
Style Show in October. That combined with the other fall
activities planned (linen sales, book sales, etc) has kept us
at the table planning events and forming committees. 
Volunteer work is exhausting but so rewarding!  Our gift
shop sales are through the roof and we have participated

Harris Hospital – Newport:  Submitted by Ann Miller.
 In May we helped with the Red Cross blood drive.
We provided cookies and punch for the hospital
employees during Hospital week along with two
scholarships of $250.00 which were given to nursing
students.  During Harris Hospital‟s earthquake drill
we had six volunteers who participated. We were given
forms which showed what our injury was, dressed up to
suit the injury and sent to the ER for treatment.  We
also support a child at the New Life Children‟s home.

Baxter Regional Medical Center – Mountain Home:  Submitted by Jill Chandler, Auxiliary President. 
The Baxter Regional Medical Center Auxiliary
was recently awarded the Arkansas Hospital
Auxiliary Association North Central District
Community Service Award for the “Self Defense
Class for Seniors.” This class is offered through
the Mruk Family Center on Aging at BRMC. The
AHAA North Central District Community Service
Award comes with $125.00 donation to the
auxiliary that wins, to assist with continuing
community service programs.  The BRMC
Auxiliary held two recent fundraisers. On June 7th8th, a Book Sale with A+ Books,and on July 5th &
6th, a Handbag Sale with Accessories Unlimited.
 We attended a BRMC Volunteer Forum on
June 15th with our President and CEO, Mr. Ron
Community Service Award: Janet Mruk; Jill Chandler, PresiPeterson officiating. He informed us of the
dent BRMC Auxiliary; Nancy Svhela, RN,BSN & Coordinator at
financial status of BRMC followed by a question the BRMC Mruk Family Center on Aging; Sharon Huffmire,
and answer period. Mr. Peterson also told us of AHAA North Central District Chair & Paul Mruk, Volunteer
eight new physicians who will soon be joining our Instructor
staff at the hospital.  The Auxiliary Board
attended an Open House and dedication on June 30th, for the 35-room 2nd floor Med/Surg unit remodel.
The Auxiliary donated $20,000.00 for
two of those rooms to be remodeled
at $10,000.00 per room. The rooms
are equipped with the latest
technology in hospital beds, nurse
notification systems and lighting, and
include new bathroom fixtures,
modern décor and flat-screen
televisions. An engraved plaque was
placed above each room number

or business that donated the money

Auxiliary.
Ozark Health Medical Center – Clinton:  Submitted by Frances Dubach.  Volunteering as a member
of the Ozark Health Auxiliary means having the opportunity to help in many rewarding areas. One of
these areas is in Chemo Clinics. The first Chemo Clinic began about two years ago. Dr. Patel and his
staff comes from Little Rock to Ozark Health every other Tuesday and sees as many as 55-60 patients
in one day. Dr. Reed comes monthly on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays. Some patients have treatments that
last three to six hours or more. Previously, the hospital had five specialty chairs for these patients. As
these clinics grew, more chairs were needed. The Auxiliary feels it is very important to keep patients as
comfortable as possible and decided to purchase six new chairs and accepted a generous donation for
a seventh chair. These seven chairs are very special. Each chair comes with a standard Trendelenberg
back that allows the patient to lay flat. Some other features include wide elastic bands for comfort and
support, fold-down trays on each side, fully upholstered arm/side panels, convenient cleaning,

directional-lock casters for easy maneuverability, and Liquicell Fabric which improves blood perfusion
and aids in reducing skin pressure. Auxiliary members also volunteer their time on each Chemo Clinic
day. Some help new patients find their way around the hospital. In the upstairs waiting area, an
Auxiliary member is stations with a cart supplying coffee, snacks, water, juices and soda for patients
and their families.
White County Medical Center – Searcy:  Submitted by Jamie Laughlin, Director of Volunteer Services.
 On June 1, 2011 White County Medical Center
hosted its Auxiliary Awards Luncheon. Fifty-five
auxiliary members were presented with pins for
service milestones ranging from 100 hours to 15,500
hours. Sharon Huffmire, District Chair, presented the
Installation of Officers ceremony. Fifteen
scholarships were presented to fourteen high school
seniors and one hospital associate. Each of these
recipients plan to continue their education in various
fields of medicine. Newly installed President, Kathy
Gammill, outlined her theme, “Making a Difference…
Lending a Helping Hand.” The program ended with a
recognition of all Past Presidents in attendance. Each
of them received a special pin for their leadership
and extended service in the Auxiliary.  Several
DVS, Jamie Laughlin presents Lillian McIver with
auxilians participated in the Senior Expo held at
recognition of being the Eldest Active Volunteer. At
WCMC South, hosted by Three Rivers Edition of the
93 years young, Lillian works as a desk attendant.
Arkansas Democrat Gazette. Volunteers served as
greeters, volunteer recruiters, and food service attendants.  Auxilians attended the National Day of
Prayer Luncheon hosted by WCMC. Five year old, Eliza Goodwin led the ceremony with an opening
prayer that touched all in attendance. Former AR State Senator, Tim Wooldridge gave a heartfelt
speech on the spirituality of America.  WCMC has gained seven new members in the past two
months.  WCMC will miss our dear friend, Glenn Perry. A member since July 1995 and donor of over
9,500 hours of service, who passed away on Sunday, July 26th.
White River Medical Center – Batesville:  Submitted by Tena Bledsoe, DVS.  White River Medical
Center Auxiliary gained five new hard-working members. We lost one longtime charter member, Betty
Massey.  Volunteers have had two fundraisers; books and linens.  As our hospital undergoes
extensive building and renovating, the volunteers have had to alter our functions also in two areas: golf
cart and information desk, to fully meet the needs of our visitors/families. A little change is good for us
all!  The Auxiliary purchased 10 new wheelchairs. Our 24 Volunteens are peppered throughout
serving with eager hearts. It‟s always good to have them in the hospital. We‟ve been involved in a new
gift shop manager search the past month and we have selected a wonderful person to begin in July.
NORTHEAST DISTRICT

Five Rivers Medical Center – Pocahontas:  Submitted by Sue Maynard, Vice President.  The Five
Rivers Medical Center Auxiliary has stayed busy. Some of our members have been on vacation. We
are losing one of our long-time members. Kay McDonald is moving to Missouri to be closer to her
family.  In March we held a White Elephant/Bake Sale where we sold all the items from the Gift Shop
that had been there a long time. We raised enough to add another scholarship to our fund.  Thanks
to Susan Maynard, Vice President, for researching and finding us a good fundraiser. We had a
“Heavenly Sheets” sale in May. We did excellent on it. It helped our scholarship fund greatly. The
company that brought the sheets was very nice and helpful.  FRMC‟s Relay for Life” was June 3rd.

Auxiliary members are always a part of the Hospital team. A fun time was had by everyone, even
though the weather was HOT! The Team raised $10,368.69.
Forrest City Medical Center – Forrest City:  Submitted by Wilma Powell, Auxiliary President.  The
FCMC Auxiliary held their Installation on June 14th. Shirley Grady the up-coming Northeast District
Chair Person conducted it. The Auxiliary helped the Hospital Scrubs Team with the Relay for Life
Closing Ceremony, the 3rd of June. We will be working on Scholarships in July. They will be awarded in
August. We held a "Books are Fun" fund raiser the 15th of June.
Piggot Community Hospital – Piggot:  Submitted by Anita Allman, Auxiliary President.  The Piggott
Community Hospital Auxiliary will again be selling tickets for the 4th of July celebration. Each year they
sell tickets for the rides on the 4th of July and arm bands for one evening. This year that will be a
Saturday night. They earn money for scholarships doing this.
SMC Regional Medical Center – Osceola:  Submitted by Pud Thomas, Auxiliary President and
Northeast District Chair.  As with everyone else it is already a busy and very hot summer in Osceola!
 The Osceola hospital auxiliary participated in the hospital's "Great Central Shake Out" recently. Each
department was asked to fill out a form detailing the safety of the area should an earthquake occur. The
auxiliary members helped evaluate the stations where they are assigned.  In cooperation with our
'sister' county hospital, Great River Medical Center, we have helped work on a Make-A-Wish program
for two local children with money-raisers bake sale and rummage sales.  We have enthusiastic
members preparing to open a thrift shop in the near future. Money raised will go to our scholarship
fund.  We have one new member this month.
St. Bernard’s Medical Center – Jonesboro:  Submitted by Dean Rossa, Newsletter Editor.  St
Bernard‟s Auxiliary presented $20,000 in scholarships to 10 students in the health occupations field at
the general meeting in June.  The auxiliary has also made a $20,000 payment, meeting their yearly
pledge, to Auxiliary House rooms for cancer treatment patients.  Dana Housley and Barbara Keller
have selected 25 of the 50 applicants for the junior volunteer program that starts July 8.  A set of
revised bylaws will be presented to the membership in a called meeting in July.  Members are
making plans to attend State Conventions in October.
NORTHWEST DISTRICT
Margaret Underwood, District Chair
Eureka Springs Hospital – Eureka Springs: Submitted by Grace Wilson.  (Story published in the
Holiday Island News, June 2011, page 9) The Eureka Springs Hospital Guild awarded five scholarships
to hospital employees last month for continuing education. “We would like to thank the community for
their continued faithful support of the Purple House Thrift shop which is the Guild‟s main source of
generating financial support for health care in our community,” said guild members. “Your donations to
the Purple House of quality items as well as purchasing gifts and extending wardrobe items are greatly
appreciated.” A photo in the article showed Guild President, Wilma Hagquist and Guild Vice President,
Marge Schoenhofer, presenting the funds to Vicky Ardent, Director of Nursing, and Joe Mitchell,
Hospital Administrator.
Mercy Medical Center – Rogers:  Submitted by Christy Blackshear, President.  Officer installation
was held on June 13th. New officers for the 2011-2012 year are Christy Blackshear, President; Carolyn
Scott, President Elect; Jerry Buchanan, Vice President; Pat Schamber, Treasurer, and Robyn Reed,
Secretary.  Get well cards for patients created by students at Cooper Elementary in Bella Vista
continues to be a successful project. In addition, auxiliary members assisted with the Volunteen
orientation that was held in June. Sixty teens are participating in this summer program.  In July the
volunteer nursing program will be initiated at Mercy Hospital. A luncheon was held in June where
twenty seven nurses expressed an interest in this endeavor. Interviewing individuals for this program is

in progress at the present time.  A uniform sale was held in June and a profit of $1700 was made for
the auxiliary. Another shuttle was purchased as well as a new inventory system for the gift shop.
Finally, a renovation project for the gift shop will begin this quarter.
North Arkansas Regional Medical Center – Harrison:  Submitted by Carol Evans, Auxiliary President.
 Our Thrift Shop expansion was started the first part of June and should be ready in about 90 days
depending on weather.  The Auxiliary Financial Steering Committee presented to the members their
recommendation to buy for the Surgery Department a set of dental drills for pediatric dental patients, for
OB/Women‟s Health and Education 720 infant CPR anytime kits, for Imaging Services a blanket
warmer and a large 4x4 (SUV) type vehicle for EMS for a total of $39,443.00.  Since the last
newsletter by God‟s grace we have not lost any members.
Northwest Medical Center – Bentonville:  Submitted by Jan Dolan, Auxiliary Board Member.  Nurses
Spa Day was held May 10th and was enjoyed by all. The nurses were treated to hand and feet
massages while relaxing and listening to soft music. Allspice Cafeteria Executive Chef Brent Hale and
his staff did an excellent job of providing fruit and healthy snacks served with glasses of sparkling white
grape juice over strawberries.  Fund raisers so far this year have been a Gold Sale, Tupperware Sale
and Book Fair. A Masquerade Jewelry Sale was held June 9th and 10th. Our thanks go out to hospital
employees, volunteers and friends who made this event successful. Thanks to Kelly and Cody Smit,
Masquerade Jewelry of West Plains, MO, for their hard work. A Scrub Sale is being planned for Oct.
18th.  We have approximately 130 active volunteers who are averaging 2200 volunteer hours per
month for 2011.  The Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was held in April and was well attended. 
The Gift Shop offers unusual and unique merchandise and our “special thanks” to Linda Maienschein
and Joan Schroeder who work diligently and efficiently to keep it running smoothly.
St. John’s Auxiliary – Berryville:  Submitted by Neta Stamps, Newsletter Chair.  St. John‟s
Auxiliary-Berryville (SJAB) elected and installed officers for 2011-2012 at the June annual meeting.

Washington Regional Medical Center - Fayetteville:  Submitted by Jimmie Beauchamp.  Volunteer
Hours for June are 4,130 and following are auxiliary profits for April/May 2011 - Gift Shop, $15,004;
Balloons, 1,091; Flowers, 554; Membership dues, 50.  The Auxiliary did not have a regular business
meeting in May. In spite of that, they did make a $10,000 payment towards their $50,000 pledge for the
Willard Walker Hospice Home and a $10,000 donation to the 2011 Benevolence Fund.  The Auxiliary
hosted a Masquerade $5 Jewelry and Gifts sale on May 2nd-3rd, with $8,505.00 in merchandise sold
with the Auxiliary‟s profit being $1,701.  In addition to a wonderful rain free picnic on May 12th, we
had a very successful Blood Drive. The Community Blood Center‟s goal was 33. We had 48 who came
through the drive and 40 of those were able to give.  Due to some scheduling conflicts, the Auxiliary

did not have their regular meeting in June. They will have a meeting on July 28th. They will be honored
in July for their volunteer service in 2010.  June was a quiet month for the Auxiliary with no special
lobby sales. Things will pick back up in July!
SOUTHEAST DISTRICT

We held another blood drive April 21st and it turned out to be a big success. Twenty units of blood were

Along with the CMMC Auxiliary who helped by providing refreshments for the participants (cupcakes).
The 28 people in attendance included parents, grandparents and other members of the families of the
expectant parents. AHEC will hold a baby shower on the first Thursday of every month. These baby
showers are to provide training on how to care for a baby, how to install car seats, safety measures,
etc. And there are also door prizes for the
participants.  On May 26th, pizza and
cake were served to all of our nurses for
Nurse's Day.  On June 10th, we held a
pizza party for the MASH students. On
June 16th, another blood drive was held.
The turnout was very light this time. 

Delta Memorial Hospital – Dumas:  Submitted by Jeri Brewer.  Following the completion of the
MASH (Medical Application of Science for Health) program, the Delta Memorial Hospital Auxiliary
sponsored a pizza party for the students who participated in the two-week activity which was held
during the month of June. The program was conducted by Heather Day.  The Delta Memorial
Hospital Auxiliary has announced that it will purchase a Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory at a cost of

approximately $7,000.00. This laboratory will allow patients to be tested for a wide range of vascular
diseases. It will be placed in the office of Dr. Roger Mason, a surgeon, who recently joined the hospital
staff at Delta Memorial Hospital.
Jefferson Regional Medical Center – Pine Bluff: Submitted by Nedra White.  JRMC installed
officers on May 26, 2011 at the annual meeting. Installed officers are President, Barbara Goodwin;
President Elect, Emma Williams; Treasurer, Marnelle Clement; Correspondence Secretary, Bonnie
Rauls; and Recording Secretary, Mary Ann Kulbeth. Nedra White, S.E. District Chair installed these
officers.  On June 30, 2011, we held a scrub sale by Uniforms 2 you. On May 6, 2011, we held a
Masquerade jewelry sale.
McGehee Hospital – McGehee:  Submitted by Gloria
Walker.  On May 9th, the auxiliary presented Florence
Nightingale, "The Lady with the Lamp" in the Hospital
Conference Room.  At a luncheon held on May 31st,John
Foster, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, presented
the McGehee Hospital Auxiliary's scholarship recipients
Tiarra Jordan and Jessica Irons with a check for $1000.00
to further their nursing education..  The McGehee
Hospital Auxiliary sponsored a free blood pressure check
for senior citizens at the Desha County Fair held in May
2011.
SOUTHWEST DISTRICT
Jerry Berley, District Chair
Baptist Health Medical Center – Arkadelphia:  Submitted by Emilie Prescott, Secretary.  National
Hospital Week was June 5th-11th and our Auxilians celebrated too! We have a great hospital and the
staff and employees are the greatest!  On June 13th, we were treated to a special luncheon by the
hospital at our regular monthly meeting. Our VDS, Loretta Kilts, who is also head of the Nutrition and
Food Services, coordinated this special occasion for us. Our own Theda Aud installed the incoming
officers for the year 7/1/2011 thru 6/30/2012, in an impressive ceremony. She presented a diamond
paperweight to each inductee in keeping with the theme of Mary Frauenhoff, AHAA President,
Volunteers Sparkle Like Diamonds. Our DVS received a special pink diamond. Greg Stubblefield, hospital
Administrator, presented pins for volunteer hours.  It was announced that our Auxiliary now has
approval to implement MedicAlert©, a state AHAA project.  We recently gave $1,500 to our hospital
for the purchase of a new Pedicraft Bassinet for the Nursery.  Our cookbook, Tasteful Treasures,
should be ready for sale by early July. It will contain around 400 recipes submitted by Baptist Health
employees, Auxiliary members and physicians.
Hot Spring County Medical Center – Malvern:  Submitted by Winifred Wheat, Auxiliary President. 
We missed our DVS sorely for an extended time due to shoulder surgery, but we knuckled down and
held it together until she could return. She has returned in full force and went to market to re-stock the
Gift Shop and business has picked up.  The auxiliary initiated a move to join with Channel 11 THV
and Brookshire‟s Grocery in collecting cereal for needy children in the summer months. The hospital
employees joined us and we collected 387 boxes of cereal, filling one of the hospital vans. We were
shown on TV at 6 a.m. delivering our cereal. This supply will remain in our county to be distributed to
those in need.

Medical Center of South Arkansas – El Dorado:  Submitted by Lynn Smith, MCSA Auxiliary
Newsletter Editor.  New auxiliary leaders have been elected and installed. Medical Center of South
Arkansas provided auxiliary members with a beautiful luncheon for our annual reports and installation
of officers meeting.  We are excited to face the challenges of the coming year. Our top priority will be
recruitment. We are open for ideas, if you have had successful recruitments, please share them with
us.  We lost 10 members in the past year, however, the hospital is going to launch Senior Circle in
August and we are very hopeful this will bring new faces to our auxiliary. Our new coordinator, for Sr.
Circle program is Margaret Gray and we are happy to welcome her to MCSA and our auxiliary.  Our
volunteers have truly “sparkled like diamonds.” In the past fiscal year we donated more volunteer hours
with fewer members. Amazing!
National Park Medical Center – Hot Springs:  Submitted by Sylvia Griffin, Auxiliary President. 
(from The Sentinel-Record, Tuesday, April 26, 2011) On Monday and Wednesday mornings, visitors
entering the main door at National Park Medical Center and proceeding to the information desk will see
the happy smiling face of Eileen Lacy. Lacy is the senior volunteer at the hospital, now in her 30th year
of service. She enjoys meeting people and plans to continue her two-day-per-week stint as long as her
health will allow. “I first started out when the hospital was at the old Ouachita building. I had to take my
son there because he had a kidney stone attach, and a friend of mine who worked there said, „Why
don‟t you start helping us?‟ That is exactly what I did. That was in 1981,” Lacy explained. When the
hospital moved to its current facility, Lacy continued, “I was here on moving day. That was a day to
really remember.” Lacy has performed a variety of volunteer duties during her tenure. One of her
favorites was pushing around the cart and delivering The Sentinel-Record to the patients as well as
pushing patients in wheel chairs outside for fresh air and to the lunch room. “I did that through 1999,
and then broke my hip. That took care of my pushing wheel chairs. I have worked several other areas,
but now I am here at the information desk. I have forgotten more about this hospital than most people
know,” she said. Lucy arrives at her station at 6:30 a.m. and stays until 12:30 p.m. on Mondays and
Wednesdays, ready to answer questions and hand out information. “I always had to get up early when I
was still young enough to work, so getting up hasn‟t been much of a problem, although 5:a.m. rolls
around a lot quicker than it used to,” Lacy said. Lacy said she doesn‟t have a specific incident she can
recall during her 30 years of volunteering, but she knows that the most common question asked of her
is, “Where is the restroom? I know the answer to that one by heart,” she said with a laugh. Over the
years, Lacy has talked to thousands of people and has made new friends from her contacts. “I enjoy
being out with people. It gives me a good break from home, and it keeps me busy enough that my mind
stays sharp, but I don‟t overtax myself,” she said. “At first my goal was to serve 25 years. After that, I
felt good and decided to keep going, so here I am at 30 years. I will go as long as I am able.” Lacy is
always glad to lend a helpful word of information to hospital visitors and concluded, “When you give
someone directions to a certain point in the hospital, it always makes you feel good when they come
back through and say, „Thank you. You gave good directions.‟ In that case, I have done my job.”
Ouachita County Medical Center – Camden:  Submitted by Daphne Bennett, Auxiliary Newsletter
Editor.  The Ouachita County Medical Center Board of Directors recently honored us with a beautiful
plaque expressing their appreciation for our community service, financial contributions, and our
dedication to enhance patient care in a safe and confidential environment to OCMC and Ouachita
County. This was placed in a conspicuous place just outside our gift shop door.  Our Good Friday
bake sale netted $929.  On June 8th we gave the hospital $40,000 on a second ambulance as well as
$8,800 to pay for an automatic sliding door at the Admissions entrance. We owe a balance of $7,000
on the second ambulance.  Two new members joined us in June.  On May 11th, volunteers were
invited to the employee picnic in celebration of National Hospital Week.  Our buyers were at market
June 21st-25th. New and exciting merchandise is already arriving.  During our June meeting Daphne
Bennett was honored as having attained 10,000 volunteer hours, joining two others who have attained
this milestone.

St. Joseph’s Mercy Health Center – Hot Springs:  Submitted by Peg Kuhnly.  Summer means
Volunteens at St. Joe and we always enjoy seeing these young people with their energy, big smiles and
computer skills. They are a big help covering for number of Volunteers who travel in the summer. 
Our June quarterly meeting was held and we had a chance to review some of the statistics from the last
year: Our Senior Net programs provided computer classes to about 300 seniors. We purchased CPR
Anytime kits at a cost of over $6,000 and provided CPR training to all 7th graders in the Hot Springs
School district. Our Courier service delivered mail and flowers and transported patients making over
10,000 trips. We sent out over 26,000 well wisher cards to patients. Our surgery waiting room
volunteers served over 6,000 families. Our courtesy carts transported over 10,000 visitors. We donated
over $50,000 to St Joseph‟s Mercy Health Center.  We will have to continue to be busy as we
committed ourselves to providing $300,000 in funding over a six year period toward the purchase of a
mobile mammography unit.
VALLEY DISTRICT

Johnson Regional Medical Center – Clarksville:  Submitted by Dorothy Spencer, Auxiliary President.
 Johsnon Regional Medical Center Auxiliary installed new officers in May and participated in National
Hospital Week. Monday we received T Shirts, Tuesday was free popcorn, Wednesday we had special
Tray Favors for the patients and gave bags of candy to all departments, Thursday was Banana split day
and Friday we had a big barbecue.  In June we had our first meeting with new officers and followed it
with a "Make your own Sundae" party.

We had a great installation luncheon in May with Miss Arkansas, Alyse Eady, as our special guest. The
year officially began in July. The theme for the year will be Auxilians are Angels Who Make a
Difference. We have begun work on our December Dinner Dance Gala by working on auction items
and have decided that the funds from the gala will go to our Hembree Cancer Center to help purchase
a new linear accelerator. The first fundraiser for the new year will be a book sale on July 26th and 27th.
In August we will have our board retreat and prepare for the year ahead.

Summit Medical Center – Van Buren:  Submitted by Mamie Mann, Auxiliary President.  Each year
the City of Van Buren celebrates "Old Timers Day" in May. Booths are set up on Main Street by various
venders and organizations. On May 14th, at the Summit Hospital booth, four of our Auxiliary volunteers
worked to help promote, along with other services, the new service to be provided through the Susan
G. Komen Grant. This will provide free mammograms to those of the community who are uninsured or
underinsured.  On June 16th, Summit Medical Center conducted a Health Fair at the new Public
Library. Screening was done for Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Glucose, Blood Pressure and BMI. Three
Summit Auxiliary members worked at this event.  Our annual Appreciation Dinner and Installation of
officers was held at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on June 21st. A delicious dinner was prepared
by the Dietary Dept. and graciously served by Hospital staff. Norma Shults our DVS was emcee for the
evening and as always made it a very entertaining and special event. Peggy Lewis was crowned
"Auxilian Of The Year". Many other fun awards were given. In spite of the hot weather there was a good
attendance of Volunteers and Guests. We were honored to have our District Chair, June Clabo, and
Past State President, Dorothy Spencer, attend. Our own AHAA State President, Mary Frauenhoff
conducted the Installation of Officers for 2011-2012. All officers of 2010-2011 were re-installed except
the First Vice-President. Lena Graves was unable to continue due to ill health. Barbara Brasuell was
installed as First Vice-President for 2011-2012.  Upcoming fundraisers include a Scrub Sale on July
18th and 19th. A garage sale is planned for July 22nd and 23rd. This will be a new venture for our
Auxiliary and we are hoping to make it a success. Plans are to donate part of the proceeds to the Life
Saver program.

I know that by the time this issue is published the 4th of July will be only a memory of fizzled out
sparklers, but I couldn‟t resist using a red, white and blue patriotic theme. Being tender-hearted and
somewhat emotional, I‟m one of those people who tear up a bit while singing the National Anthem.
Despite all the brew-ha-ha of party politics and our government‟s financial woes, my patriotism toward
our great nation is very important to me.
I don‟t know about you, but I‟m getting excited about the upcoming AHAA Convention, October 5th-7th,
at the Double Tree in downtown Little Rock. I hope you‟re making plans to go because you don‟t want
to miss it! While October might seem a long time from now, it‟s really only just around the corner. I
know that our auxiliary has already made hotel reservations. Keep an eye out for more information on
this fun event. Registration Packets should be emailed to all Auxiliaries within a couple of weeks.
