stocking stitch using 8mm (US 11) needles.
SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS
C4B = Cable 4 back Slip next 2 sts onto
cable needle and leave at back of work, K2,
then K2 from cable needle.
C4F = Cable 4 front Slip next 2 sts onto
cable needle and leave at front of work,
K2, then K2 from cable needle.
MATERIALS

(Rowan Plaid, and Yorkshire Tweed

HAT
Cast on 62 sts using 8mm (US 11) needles.
Row 1 (RS): K2, *P2, K4, P2, K2, rep
from * to end.
Row 2 and every foll alt row: P2, *K2,
P4, K2, P2, rep from * to end.
Row 3: As row 1.
Squiggle cable hat
Row 5: K2, *P2, C4B, P2, K2, rep from *
to end.
Twist cable hat
Row 5: K2, *P2, C4F, P2, K2, rep from *
to end.
MATERIALS
2 x 50gm standard DK weight yarn
(Rowan Wool Cotton,Yorkshire Tweed
DK, Felted Tweed and Cotton Glace are all
suitable for this pattern)
NEEDLES
1 pair 33⁄4 mm (no 9) (US 5) needles
TENSION
22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm measured over
open rib using 3 ¾ mm (US 5) needles.
One size
HAT
Cast on 112 sts using 33⁄4 mm (US 5)
needles.
Work in K2, P2 rib until work measures
25cm from cast on edge ending with a
WS row.
Both hats
Rows 7 and 9: As row 1.
Row 11: K2, *P2, C4F, P2, K2, rep from
* to end.
Row 12: As row 2.
These 12 rows form patt.
Work in patt for a further 16 rows, ending
with a WS row.
Shape crown
Row 1 (RS): K2, *P2tog, cable 4, P2tog,
K2, rep from * to end. 50 sts.
Row 2: P2, *K1, P4, K1, P2, rep from *
to end.
Row 3: K2, *P1, (K2tog) twice, P1, K2,
rep from * to end. 38 sts.
Row 4: P2, *K1, P2, rep from * to end.
Row 5: K2tog, *P1, K2tog, rep from * to
end. 25 sts.
Row 6: P1, *K1, P1, rep from * to end.
Row 7: K1, (K2tog) 12 times.
Break yarn and thread through rem 13 sts.
Pull up tight and fasten off securely.
MAKING UP
PRESS as described in the Finishing
Instructions panel.
Join back seam.
Shape crown
Next row (RS)(dec): (K2tog tbl, P2tog)
to end. (56sts) Work 5 rows in K1, P1 rib.
Next row (RS)(dec): (K2tog tbl) to end.
(28sts) Purl 1 row.
Next row (RS)(dec): (K2tog tbl) to end.
Break yarn leaving 50cm length attached.
With a darning needle thread yarn
through sts and gather together fasten off
securely.
MAKING UP
Join seam using an edge to edge stitch.

Instructions panel.

These 2 rows form rib.
Work a further 12 rows. (14 rows using
yarn A completed.)
Break off yarn A, join in yarn B and work
14 rows.
Break off yarn B, join in yarn C and work
14 rows.
Break off yarn C, join in yarn D and work
14 rows.
Break off yarn D, join in yarn E and work
14 rows.
Break off yarn E, join in yarn F and work
14 rows.
Break off yarn F, join in yarn G and work
14 rows.
Break off yarn G, join in yarn H and work
14 rows.
Break off yarn H, join in yarn J and work
14 rows.
Break off yarn J, join in yarn L and work
14 rows.
Break off yarn L and join in yarn A.
Rep from ** twice more, but do NOT
break off yarn L at end of second repeat.
Using yarn L, cast off in rib.

FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS
PRESSING
After darning in all the ends, block each
piece of knitting.
Press each piece, except ribs, gently,
using a warm iron over damp cloth.
Take special care to press the edges
