Proudly serving the residents of our San Diego communities.
Happy Birthday USA!
By Sam Merrick, National Vice President/Military Affairs at Lincoln Military Housing
O
n July 4th, the USA will be 240 years old. Now, that’s a lot of candles! At a fraction of
those years myself, my old bones can appreciate how long ago this country was born.
But “nation years” are different from “people years.” The homelands of England are more than
1000 years old, Italy more than 2700, Persia and China more than 4000, which makes America
still a “nation child.” So we must act as the parents of this young nation as did the original
immigrants who discovered and established a land of freedom and hope.
As our nation grows, we as today’s parents still carry the responsibility and duty to influence
decisions, and to support and to fiercely defend our child. So think of the United States of
America for what she is...a strong yet growing child, full of potential. She still needs us.
• Lincoln News
Celebrate the birthday of America this July 4th....celebrate it as you would your own child’s,
rejoicing in each success, encouraging and reassuring when she falters, forgiving of past
mistakes. Just as children need parents to walk them through their growing years and stay the
course through the maturing years, America needs each and every one of us. Let’s be there for
her – with our loyalty, support and protection and yes, even our vote. She deserves no less.
• Community Services
Here’s to the land of the free and home of the brave. Happy Birthday, USA!
