Lindsey Wilson vs. Azusa Pacific - NAIA Championship Lindsey Wilson Sports Information (270) 384-8071 Women’s Basketball Notes Rainey Makes Splash in NAIA Championship Debut Ashley Rainey exploded for 20 second-half points to finish with 27 and lead fourth seeded Lindsey Wilson College to a 63-56 win against fifth seeded Southern Nazarene (Okla.) University on Thursday in the NAIA National Championship at Oman Arena. Senior Viktoria Krell added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and her classmates Diondra Anthony added eight and Bethany Spillman scored 10 points. Logan Martin paced the Crimson Storm with 21 points on three 3-pointers and Abbey Marra added 13 points in the loss. What Azusa Pacific Does Well The Cougars like to get out and run and shoot often. In their firstround win against eighth seeded Belhaven University, Azusa Pacific took 71 field-goal attempts and shot 20 threes as it won 75-61. While getting out on the run, the Cougars also pass the ball very efficiently. As a team they rank fourth in the NAIA with 17.5 assists per game, while Briana Hall ranks first nationally in total assists with 201. The Cougars Heading into the National Championship The Cougars were a No. 2 seed last year, advancing to the program’s first-ever NAIA title game, where they suffered a 73-65 defeat to Union. All five starters from last year’s title game are back, along with all-conference newcomer and the team’s second-leading scorer Eboni Sadler, who averaged 14.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game during the regular season. The Cougars have four players who have scored 1,000 career points and a fifth, senior guard Michelle Byrd, entered the tournament with 999 career points and became the fifth current Cougar to reach the 1,000-point milestone against Belhaven with two points. Going Up Against Teams in the Field Lindsey Wilson owns a 4-5 record against teams in the field of the National Championship. That mark includes the first-round win against Southern Nazarene and two losses against Campbellsville and a 1-2 mark against Shawnee State. Lindsey Wilson registered wins against St. Xavier and Freed-Hardeman at the Daytona Beach Shootout in December. Krell Scores 2,000th Point of Her Career Senior Viktoria Krell is nearing the end of her Blue Raider career, but the Ludwigsburg, Germany native will be going out in style as just the second player in program history to score 2,000 points in a career. With her eighth point in a 14-point performance against Shawnee State on Feb. 17, Krell reached the 2,000-point mark. The senior is also the program’s all-time leading rebounder with 1,267 boards. Rainey Among the NAIA’s Best Sophomore Ashley Rainey is in the top 10 of four different NAIA statistical categories, including field-goal percentage where she is first at 62.8 percent, points per game (20.9), ranking fourth, total scoring with 674 points which ranks fourth, as well as 4.4 offensive rebounds per game which rank eighth nationally.
