Here a a few smiles from the latest POVs www.almalaikah.com Page 5 Al Malaikahan - April/May ‘09 Spring Fling Fun Filled Weekend Y ear after year Al Malaikahans make the trek to Laughlin, Nevada for the annual Spring Fling and Ceremonial weekend. This year was the seventh year in a row that the fun filled weekend brought us all together. The Hospitality room was hopping all weekend long as the enthusiastic nobility seemed to make it their “home away from home”. Thursday night’s Midnight Bowling got the weekend “Rolling”. On Friday the ladies held their luncheon and cosmetics demonstration. They enjoyed the food and the relaxed atmosphere. Then several of the ladies moseyed over to the Starview Room to be initiated into the “Hillbillies”. These “flatlanders” will never be the same again. Friday evening we were all treated to a great variety show. Sandy Hackett kept us laughing till our sides hurt and he really played and interacted with the appreciative crowd. We were also entertained by Sandy’s wife, Lisa Dawn Miller. Lisa is the daughter of legendary Motown songwriter Ron Miller (“For Once in My Life” and “Touch Me in the Morning,” among many others). She was very charming and her tribute to her father’s music was at times moving and really rounded out the evening’s entertainment. Saturday started off with a bang. Al Malaikah’s Million Dollar Band entertained in their usual extraordinary manner. Then our ritual cast put on a wonderful First Section. The 2nd Section was lively and everyone seemed to have fun. Just like the Band, the Patrol and Stagecraft did a great job and lived up to their billing as well. Then as not to be out done by their women folk several of the boys were initiated into the Hillbillies. The new nobles and their ladies attended a brief champagne reception with Illustrious Sir Ron Bianchi and First Lady Katie. Things kept moving along at a quick pace as the Saturday evening buffet dinner was presented in the Starview Room. The food was plentiful and excellent in every way. After dinner we made our way over to Don Laughlin’s Show room to take in the Smothers Brothers Show. If you went with high expectations they were certainly fulfilled. The show opened up with a few of their well know routines. As usual Dick questioned Tom’s “fibbing” and reminded him that “No matter how many frequent flyer miles he (Tom) had he still wouldn’t ever be upgraded to pilot”! We were given an entertaining and interesting look back over the past forty years as they shared some family photos with the crowd via two huge video screens. Tom and Dick really are a big part of our “American experience” and their songs and witty banter and quasi arguing are truly timeless. The performance wrapped up with Tom’s alter ego “Yo-Yo Man”. After the show the smiling crowd dispersed back to the casino and the hospitality room. Hopefully everyone made it home safe and sound on Sunday. The whole weekend was a huge success and that is certainly due to the efforts of event Chairman Illustrious Sir Glen Christensen, P.P. It was nice to see Illustrious Sir Ron Bianchi who has really been the catalyst for this annual event get to experience it and enjoy it as our Potentate. Al Malaikahan Ambassador-At-Large Joel Barez also makes sure year after year that the Shrine is treated first class CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEW when we are in Laughlin. BIG HIT R ecent changes in the way the Al Malaikahan is delivered have resulted in not only cost savings, but also better communication. For years, nobles have complained that because of US Post Office bulk mailing procedures, their magazine regularly arrives late - sometimes as much as five weeks after its publication date. More than 500 nobles have expressed their desire to receive the Al Malaikahan via e-mail rather than older fashioned snail mail, which seldom arrives in a timely fashion. The previous issue was the first sent out by e-mail and the response has been extremely favorable. “I’ve been very pleasantly surprised how many nobles have gotten in touch with me to request the electronic Al Malaikahan,” said Second Ceremonial Master Mark Elliott, Editor/Publisher of the magazine. “Everyone seems to like the fact that the information is up-to-date and they really love receiving it in color. It really is a win win for all involved. Hopefully this will be reflected in an increase in the number of nobles who attend events.” “I want to thank all the Nobles who have signed up for the electronic issue of the Al Malaikahan. It is another way to defray unnecessary costs and modernize the way we communicate with the nobility,” Potentate Ron Bianchi said. To have your Al Malaikahan delivered by e-mail on publication date, simply send and Article by Gerald Petievich e-mail to: irondad@almalaikah.com There were not enough registrations for the Potentate’s Alaska Cruise. Therefore with much regret the trip has been CANCELLED. Another Al Malaikah Shriner Helping Our Youth! H i Nobles, Greetings from Southern California Jurisdiction Order of DeMolay; Please allow me as the new Personal Representative of the Grand Master of DeMolay, to give you an update of what’s taking place with our young men and organization in SCJ. Our membership is growing and we’re in the process of opening four new chapters, in Yucaipa, Covina, Long Beach and Culver City. Most Worshipful Adamson has been asking all Masonic Lodges to consider sponsoring a Masonic Youth Group. I would like to remind my Al Malaikah Brothers that Shrine Clubs can also sponsor DeMolay Chapters. If you have a place to meet and a few Shiners’ willing to serve as advisors, I want to talk to you on how to get started. Our jurisdiction is presently going through a major re-structuring process. Effective this September at our Conclave, we’ll be going from 4 districts to 8 small Leagues. This change will allow all active DeMolay to participate equally at all levels of DeMolay and will reduce the driving distances in most cases. Our young men are excited about the upcoming changes and are busy trying to come up with new League names and are looking forward to running for the new Jurisdiction and League positions. If you like to get involved or just give us your thoughts, we would love to hear from you at: (909) 875-4980 or JustDadKey@Roadrunner.com Fraternally, Victor A. P. I .C. U. S hriners Hospitals for Children – Los Angeles (SHC-LA) does not have a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Consequently, a local children’s hospital has been utilized for planned and un-planned patient cases requiring a higher level of care. Unfortunately, SHC-LA has recently been informed that they will no longer be able to transfer patients to this local children’s hospital as they have exceeded 100% of their capacity for inpatient care. This has severely impacted their ability to reduce the current backlog of over 500 surgical cases - some of which will require this PICU support. SHC-LA surgeons have also expressed concern for being able to maintain their surgical proficiency at a non-PICU capable hospital. Due to these issues, the hospital has received approval to build a four bed PICU at SHCLA from our Corporate Headquarters. Construction of a PICU will allow SHC-LA to continue to provide services to patients requiring a higher level of post-surgical care while maintaining superior patient safety. This is in perfect alignment with the Shriners Hospitals for Children vision, mission and strategic plan. A Shriners Hospital for Children -LA PICU will also assist with the retention and recruitment of skillful pediatric orthopaedic surgeons along with the enhancement of present and future capabilities of the hospital. It will allow us to increase the number of complex surgeries performed at SHC-LA without the use of expensive transfers to other pediatric hospitals. Two of the hospital’s multi-bed patient rooms and an isolation room are planned to be renovated into the four bed PICU. The types of cases that will benefit from this onsite PICU care include: spinal fusion surgeries, toe-to-hand transfers and other cases with complications that require intensive monitoring. SHC-LA performs 70 spinal operations per year. Because our post-operative capabilities are limited, our spinal surgeons perform about 12 of these cases at outside pediatric facilities. We also send out approximately four cases per year with postoperative difficulties that we cannot currently manage in-house. In addition, we have been forced to deny care to some children who will need post-operative care because we are unable to provide the sophisticated medical management that is needed. The cost savings of bringing these surgeries in-house will be substantial. The cost to SHC-LA to treat a PICU patient at an outside pediatric facility is over $7,000 per day. On average, this resulted in total charges of over $210,000 per patient! A PICU at SHC-LA would cost only $4,600 per day resulting in a savings to the hospital of over $330,000 annually. The unit will be built according to the State of California Department of Health Services and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) standards specifications and requirements. It will be supported by pediatric intensive care trained nurses, respiratory therapists and intensivist physicians. This specially trained team will provide the care and oversight for the patients of the PICU 24 hours a day. The expected length of stay for these patients in intensive care is anticipated to be between two to three days. Based on approval by local and State of California agencies, the first steps in this process will be to proceed with design and construction bids, apply for permits and then begin construction and other renovation tasks. I have only known the Colonel since 1994. Over that time we had many conversations about Masonry and the Shrine. He always had time to chat with me when I was a new noble. He often made me smile when a “quick” five minute phone call turned into an hour long history lesson. He ALWAYS seemed to want to share his experiences and to help guide with a kind word or even constructive criticism. He truly cared about the Shrine and was a wealth of knowledge. I was always eager to listen to his tales and more than anything I remember how he showed all who took the time to notice how much he loved his fraternity and his lovely wife Sherry. In 2004 the Colonel retired as Editor/Publisher of the Al Malaikahan Newspaper. I knew him as a friend and as a mentor. I knew I would never really be able to fill his shoes, but then again he was a true “ veins full of ink - newspaper man”. I have a profound respect for the effort he gave to his craft and the way he treated me when I first arrived at Al Malaikah all those years ago. Perhaps the words of Brother Benjamin Franklin describe the Colonel’s Al Malaikahan years. “If you would not be forgotten, As soon as you are dead and rotten, Either write things worth reading, Or do things worth writing.” Those of us who knew the Colonel will never forget him. Mark Elliott, Editor/Publisher I t is with great sadness that I must communicate to you the news of the death of Colonel Douglas MacMullen. He had just passed his 89th birthday. Doug and his late wife Sherry met in San Francisco and were married on March 11, 1942. For the next four years, they were frequently separated; Doug had been commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery on December 10,1941 and his services were required overseas in New Guinea, the Philippines, and elsewhere. Speaking long afterward about his wartime experience, he said that he’d been incredibly lucky that he hadn’t been killed, and he hadn’t had to kill anyone else. After the war he returned to the United States and changed his branch to Intelligence. He retired as a Colonel in 1972. Stationed inside and outside the military, his interests and activities covered a wide range. He was a planner and faculty member at the Institute for Military Assistance and at the Army Special Warfare School, a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, London, and a member of the United States Naval Institute. He is a past regional director of the Clan MacMillan Society of North America, past President of the St. Andrews Society, Los Angeles, and past director of the Masonic Press Club of Los Angeles. Doug’s Masonic activities began when he joined Alpha Home Lodge No. 72 in New Orleans during the war. He became a member of Islam (now Asiya) Temple in san Francisco in 1956, AI Malaikah Temple in 1968, and served on the Board of Governors of the Shriners Hospital, LOS Angeles, from 1988 through 1993. He was the editor and publisher of The AI Malaikahan in 1974 and from 1978 to 2004, and is the author of the AI Malaikah retrospective Sentimental Journey, a Historv of the First Hundred Years.
