The Refugee Story of a
Personal Care Kit
Walk, walk, walk, walk slowly, walk quickly, shuffle your
tired feet, walk, walk, walk. You can see the refugee camp
in the far distance, and you pray for strength to get there.
All you have is your backpack and the clothes you are
wearing. You notice there are long lines as you arrive at
the camp, and you see a Lutheran World Relief banner.
People are smiling as they carry a towel bundle. They
have received a Personal Care Kit with a towel, soap,
toothbrush, nail clipper, and comb. You smell the clean
fragrance of a bar of soap. You receive your Personal Care
Kit and are grateful for the hands that assembled it. You
know God’s family is loving and caring about you today.
We are grateful for the 138 kits donated by members
and friends of Augustana! This simple act is our way to
share God’s grace and love with people who are fleeing
from violence and seeking safety. If you missed this
opportunity, you may support this by giving money for
the shipping to the refugee locations. Shipping for each
kit costs $2.65. Make checks payable to Augustana and
memo: LWR Shipping.

“Thanks, Augustana!”
Dear Augustana Lutheran Church,
Thank you so much! Your support of a 9Health Fair site
helped to reach thousands and thousands of individuals
who benefited from appropriate health care screening.
We very much appreciate your organization’s help in
the coordination of such a successful event at Augustana
Lutheran Church. Your community could not deliver this
service without support from organizations like yours.
We take pride in our partnership and your community is
the beneficiary. We look forward to working with you
for years to come.
Thank you again for all you do to make 9Health Fair a
success.
In the best of health,
James H. Goddard
President & CEO, 9Health Fair
Dear Augustana Early Learning Center and
Augustana Lutheran Church,
Many of the children in our program are in a new
place, with new people who sometimes speak a new
language. And some of the children come from scary and
challenging situations. By simply donating a backpack,
these children are given items that will help them feel
comfortable, confident, and special as they begin a new
school year.
Because of your generosity, we gathered and assembled
443 backpacks and received $5,400 worth of gift cards!
This collection is our largest ever and it could not
have come at a better time. Our programs are growing
exponentially, and we are expecting more refugees
and foster children than ever before. The support you
offer significantly impacts a successful future for our
clients and their families. You have made more than a
contribution; you have impacted a child’s future.
Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains humbly and
gratefully thanks you.
Dear Friends of LFS,
The vulnerable have many faces: a neglected child, a
newly arrived refugee, a young woman facing a crisis
pregnancy, an older adult transitioning in life, a family
that lost everything to a natural disaster, a child in
need of a loving family. Your recent gift, the second
installment of your 2015 Local Outreach program, helps
give hope to many people by providing: a foster family,
support in a new country, a caring counselor, case
management, an adoptive family, and much more.
Thank you for strengthening our ministry to the
vulnerable people in our community. With your gift we
are able to make available services that heal, strengthen,
and provide hope.
In Christ,
Jane Pope Meehan

Dear Augustana Lutheran Church,
Thank you so much for your recent gift to Rainbow
Trail’s Annual Fund. Your gifts are helping us provide
one of the best camping experiences in the country. Our
campers have had wonderful experiences playing and
learning with our staff in God’s creation. Thank you for
your gift of helping provide life-changing weeks for
youth and families.
Thank you again for supporting Rainbow Trail and for
your partnership in this ministry. Your gift helps us offer
people a great place to come and be recharged, prepared
to serve again once back home. Thanks for believing in
the power of this ministry. Please come visit us and see
your gifts at work!
Yours in Christ,

Pastors
People of God, it is almost here;
and ready or not the readings, the
music, the prayers, and sermons of
Advent, all point to signs of God’s
coming, “. . . of days and times
advancing toward us, of hopes and
expectations for a future held in
the promises of God.” (Sundays &
Seasons Year C 2016, Augsburg
Press, p. 23) The beginning of
Advent is Sunday, November 29 continuing for four
Sundays. I often wish this first season of the church year
would last much longer, for we are people who often
dwell in the future.
What does the future hold for us? For a few months
now, presidential hopefuls have been trying to gain
traction with voters outlining their particular hopes and
expectations on the economy, jobs, foreign and domestic
terrorism, immigration, health care and more, in hopes
of being elected in 2016. What does the future hold
for this nation? At Augustana, the Call Committee is
interviewing candidates for the position of senior pastor
with these conversations centered in the expressed hopes
and expectations of the congregation for its future. What
does the future hold for Augustana? And then there
are upcoming holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas
each complete, sometimes even loaded, with hopes and
expectations. The days and the times are advancing
toward us.
The invitation of Advent is to spend time reflecting on
these hopes and expectations in light of a future held
in the promises of God. One writer puts it this way:
“Advent is not a four-week exploration of waiting only
for a baby. Advent is rather an annual time to consider
God’s coming in every way and time possible: in a meal,
by a word, as a light, in the assembly gathered, as a
complete surprise, following a long wait, suddenly, or
as a child.” (Sundays & Seasons Year C 2016, Augsburg
Press, p. 23)
It’s almost that time. It’s almost here—that time to
imagine and re-imagine hopes and expectations for the
future held in the promises of God.

From Pastor Caitlin
During these last two-and-a-half
years of my pastoral call with
Augustana, some of you may
have received an early morning
e-mail from me and now know
I’m an early riser. My brain
likes those pre-dawn hours
best. Recently, on a second cup
of coffee and well into my thoughts for the day, my
husband Rob came walking into the kitchen searching
for his first cup of coffee. He casually asked, “What’s
on your mind, honey?” I answered, “I’m pondering the
merits of hierarchical leadership versus the ‘liberal’
communal ideal.” Ever the funny man, he turned on his
heel to exit and said dryly, “I’m out.” Hilarity, laughter
until tears, ensued. Fun, and funny, times.
All of this is to say that there is a lot on my mind
about leadership and systems—countries, families,
and congregations. Augustana especially. No surprise
there. Pastor Pederson retired a year and a half ago.
Pastor Hytjan is our second interim pastor. We’re a
large church with good people who serve both in lay
leadership and on staff, all of whom want what’s best for
the congregation and some with different ideas of what
that looks like. This makes for lively conversations at
Congregational Council meetings. Sometimes there is
easy agreement and sometimes negotiated compromise.
This is sound leadership. Augustana staff over the last
year and half have been a stabilizing force on behalf of
the congregation during the senior pastor transitions.
I’m grateful for their hard work and commitment to
Augustana.
As I write this ahead for the holiday newsletter, the Bible
text for the October sermon out of Mark’s gospel has
to do with James and John doing an end-run around the
other apostles on their way to Jesus. They are right that
Jesus is the person to turn to in an uncertain time. But
it’s the end-run around their people that was problematic.
Jesus reminds James and John and the other ten apostles
to look around. Reminding them to make sure that they
are communicating with each other; to remember that
they are part of a whole, in service to one another like
Jesus who came to serve. This is a good reminder for us,
too—to continue to look to each other, to continue to talk
to each other, to continue to serve each other as Christ
who came to serve.
To be clear, I believe in leadership. A good leader
makes a difference. As our next senior pastor will most
certainly be identified, called and make a difference. In
the meantime, good people of Augustana, we continue as
co-workers in the gospel, in the here and now. Serving
each other in prayer, worship, education, and visitation
as we gather, invite, hope, and heal per our mission
statement. Serving locally with chili collection and
food justice up through Thanksgiving for Metro Caring.
Serving globally with the purchase of self-sustaining
farms in Advent through ELCA Good Gifts. It is an
honor to serve you and serve with you.
thing in the morning or the last thing before you go to
bed at night.
Mother Teresa talked about how grateful she was to
the people she was helping, the sick and dying in the
slums of Calcutta, because they enabled her to grow and
deepen her spirituality. That is a very different way of
thinking about gratitude—gratitude for what we can give
as opposed to what we receive.
This holiday season, ask yourself, what good is
gratitude? Reflect on your blessings, maintain an attitude
of gratitude, and discover the answer for yourself.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever.

Give Thanks
Giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5:20
Thanksgiving and Christmas are occasions when we
take the time to acknowledge what we are grateful for.
It seems like a good thing to do, but why do we do it?
What good is gratitude?
Over the past decade, psychologists have been studying
gratitude and have identified many social, psychological,
spiritual, and physical benefits from giving thanks. The
most popular gratitude practice is to keep a “gratitude
journal.” Studies have traced a range of impressive
benefits to the simple act of writing down the things
for which we’re grateful. Benefits include better sleep,
fewer symptoms of illness, and more happiness among
adults and children. Another gratitude practice is to
count your blessings on a regular basis, maybe the first
Thank you!
For more than 15 years, Melanie Backes, has been
a faithful accompanist for our children’s and youth
choirs and for about three years was the youth
choir director. We thank her for her wonderful and
sensitive accompaniments along with her unassuming
and gracious spirit. A volunteer position often goes
unnoticed. This gift of accompaniment is rare indeed,
and we want to thank Melanie for a job well done and so
appreciated! Thank you, Melanie!!
We welcome Tim Garrington as our new accompanist
for Choristers, Y Hope, and Sunday School Opening.
Tim is a medical doctor with an undergraduate degree
in music with piano and organ emphasis. Tim has sung
in Augustana’s Chancel and Chamber choirs and is
currently the keyboardist in Stratus Chamber Orchestra.
He and his wife Carol have two children in choir and

Children’s and Family
Ministry
Celebrate – Invite – Mentor –
Serve – Share
During the previous program year, the Children’s
and Family Committee spent a fair amount of
time contemplating our purpose. Using the Great
Commandment (Matthew 22:35–40) and the Great
Commission (Matthew 28:16–20), we determined that
God is calling us to provide these five things:
• Celebrate – participate in and create opportunities for
worship
• Invite – participate in and create opportunities for
fellowship
• Mentor – participate in and create opportunities for
discipleship
• Serve – participate in and create opportunities for
ministry
• Share – participate in and create opportunities for
evangelism
So what exactly does that mean?
It means that we believe that God has called us as a
committee and a community to provide not only our
youth but our families the time and space to show God
our love and thanks for the gifts God has given us
through celebration in various worship experiences. To
create time and space to simply invite people to have
fun together, to get to know one another, and to build
relationships that will help sustain us. We believe we
are called to mentor each other, young and old, learning
from one another. We believe that education is a threeway street: We learn from God, from our elders and from
our children. We uphold the idea that God calls us to
serve, to love, and to care for our neighbors and for the
world that God has created and entrusted to us. Lastly
but not least, we believe that we are commanded by
God to share the good news of Gods amazing love and
forgiveness for all and to all.
So how do we do this?
The Children’s and Family Ministry Committee created
the following purpose statement:
Augustana’s Children’s and Family programs are guided by
the Holy Spirit to invite all, to share the Gospel, to serve God,
to mentor each other, and to celebrate Jesus Christ.
doing, and we realized that while we are providing
opportunities in all five areas, there is work to be done to
create a well-rounded program.
This is where all of you come in . . .
The committee also looked at the various areas youth
participate, which has lead us to our next step—and
this is where all of you come in. We will be sending
out surveys to get feedback from you—we want to hear
what you have to say about our youth program, about
our family activities, and about what works for your
family and what doesn’t. As God’s church in the world
continues to change and evolve, we want to make sure
that we are helping you along on your personal and
familial faith journeys. We want to create programming
that supports and uplifts you and your family rather than
add to the stress and busyness of everyday life, so we
sincerely hope you will take the time to participate in our
surveys. We want to hear from you!
Youth Mentor
You may have heard some rumblings lately about a
youth mentor, and you may be wondering what that is all
about. A youth mentor is a college-age or post collegeage student who has some experience working with
youth. This person will focus on working solely with our
middle school and high school youth. The middle school
and high school years are so intense for students today
that we feel that we need someone here at Augustana
whose sole focus is those students. The youth mentor
will be supervised by me and will lead the Breakfast
Club and the Wednesday night drop-ins and work with
We use this purpose statement to guide us as we plan
events, activities, and learning opportunities for the
youth and families in our community. Each event,
activity or learning opportunity must meet at least one of
our purposes. When that purpose(s) has been identified,
we plan accordingly. We also use the purpose statement
to help us develop a well-rounded program; we strive to
plan events and activities in all five areas.
The Children’s and Family Ministry Committee then
went through our existing programs to see how we were

Second Annual Augustana Chili
Challenge for Metro Caring
The congregation of Augustana and the Augustana Early
Learning Center (AELC) are teaming up for a canned
Chili Challenge in the month of November. The Early
Learning Center will end their canned chili collection on
November 15. They will bring their chili to worship that
morning and challenge the congregation to meet their
collected amount through November 25 (Thanksgiving
Eve).
All chili collected will go to Metro Caring to help
them meet the immediate hunger needs of people in
the Denver Metro area. Metro Caring operates one of
Denver’s largest hunger-relief programs, including
a fresh foods shopping market, teaching garden, and
weekly healthy living and nutrition classes. Situated in
the heart of Denver, Metro Caring distributes between
4,000 to 6,000 pounds of food, baby items, and personal
care products in helping to meet the nutritional and

Please bring cans of chili (meat or vegetarian) beginning
November 8 and place them around the communion
tables in both Christ Chapel and the sanctuary. Canned
chili is a high-protein meal, and one can of chili weighs
about one pound. Let’s be generous, meet the challenge,
and help Metro Caring in their goal of eliminating
hunger in the Denver Metro area.

and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Help provide Thanksgiving dinner
for Warren Village families
Augustana is
again providing
Thanksgiving
Food Baskets for
families of Warren
Village. Warren
Village provides
a safe apartment,
job training, and
child care, for 106
families—single
parents with children
who have been
homeless or close to homeless in our community. This
meal is a very special celebration for these people. Your
donation provides a ham, canned fruits and vegetables,
dinner rolls and a fruit pie. Donate $35 per basket (or
any amount) payable to Augustana Lutheran Church and
footnoted “Warren Village” by Sunday, November 15.
A $500 Action Team Request has been granted from
Thrivent Financial.
Help pack food baskets and tour Warren Village
The food will be delivered to Warren Village, and we
will assemble the food baskets there. Volunteers from
Augustana (this is a great family service opportunity)
will meet Sunday, November 22 at 12:30 p.m. at the
Warren Village office (1300 Gilpin St.), where the food
will be delivered in bulk; we will sort it into 106 meal
baskets. This gives us the opportunity to be closer to the
people we are serving and to take a guided tour of the
facility to see how Warren Village is serving them.
If you would like to ride the church bus from Augustana
to Warren Village, reserve a ride with Augustana’s office
(303-388-4678) and meet at the Fairfax entrance (next
to the breezeway) at noon. The bus will deliver the
volunteers back to Augustana at approximately 2 p.m.

December Adult Forum
Sundays November 29, December 6, 13, 20, 9:15 a.m., Anna Paulson Room
December
Adult Learning for Advent will bring a different speaker each Sunday bringing their
unique faith perspective to the season leading up to the nativity of our Lord. Whether it be
biblical, cultural, or theological, or perhaps a mix of all three, come and be a part of the
conversation as we enter into how other people anticipate ‘God made flesh for the sake of
the world.’
Pastor Caitlin Trussell
Let’s buy farms again this Advent!
As part of our Advent journey toward
the birth of the One who fed the
five thousand, the Global Mission
Committee is again asking Augustana
members to support the ELCA Good
Gifts ministry. As a congregation last
year we helped end hunger and poverty
by supplying farm animals to seven
families around the globe to breed
for food and sale. A “farm” includes
animals, farm implements, and the
educational support needed to ensure success. All of this still for only $715 per farm! Our
collection will begin on November 29 and end just before Christmas on December 20.
Look for updates in the weekly bulletin/e-Pistle. Let’s see how many farms we can buy to
make Christmas an especially joyous event for those who will receive a fresh start in life!
December Monthly Luncheon
Thursday, December 3, 11:30 a.m., Fellowship Hall
The Silver Notes Choir will be our program for our festive December monthly luncheon
on Thursday, December 3. (Please note: This is the first Thursday in December.) Judy
Nyquist and her crew will serve a delicious holiday meal. To help her plan the meal,
please make a reservation no later than Monday, November 30, with Augustana’s office
(303-388-4678). Cost is $8 per person. We welcome visitors, so this is wonderful
opportunity to invite a friend or neighbor to enjoy a holiday treat—holiday music and
good food!

Christmas Eve Broadcast on KOA
Augustana Lutheran Church has a long history of
broadcasting the good news of the Gospel on Denver’s
airwaves. Virtually as long as Denver has had radio
stations, Augustana has had a radio ministry of one
type or another. Weekly broadcasts of services and
sermons began in the 1950s and continued until 1998.
The broadcast of Augustana’s Christmas Eve service has
continued for over 50 consecutive years.
The planned, one-hour broadcast over radio KOA
reaches most of the western United States. In 2001,
we began producing this one-hour program rather than
running a live feed from the service. This was done
to increase the audio quality of the program and
to assure its reliability, as several programs had
been interrupted in previous years due
to technical difficulties related to the
remote broadcast equipment.
Each year Augustana
receives dozens of reports,
acknowledgements, and “thankyou” notes from members and
strangers who hear the broadcast
at home and in the car throughout the
country.
Again this year, Augustana will air a one-hour,
Christmas Eve broadcast at 10 p.m. over radio
station KOA. The broadcast and production costs run
around $1,500. In the past the Augustana Foundation
has helped fund this outreach ministry. Recently, the
congregation has reached out to support this important
ministry, and now is your opportunity to continue to
do so. If you’d like to contribute toward this broadcast,
please make a check payable to Augustana Lutheran
Church and note “KOA Christmas Broadcast.” You can
make your gift in honor or memory of a loved one, and
the acknowledgement will be included in the Christmas
bulletins. Thank you!
Gifts for poinsettias
This Advent and Christmas season you can
help provide poinsettias for Augustana’s
chancel while honoring or remembering
special events or loved ones. Use
the form below to indicate your
preferences. Any amount
is welcome. Make checks
payable to Augustana Lutheran
Church. Gifts received by Sunday,
December 20 will be acknowledged
in Augustana’s Christmas bulletins.
You may also give a gift toward the KOA
Christmas Broadcast in honor or in memory
of a loved one. Thanks!
