Michael Green – Director, Augustana Center for Teaching and Learning
Shawn Beattie – Educational Technology Services Manager
Carla Tracy – Director, Tredway Library
Moodle is a course management system that faculty at Augustana College use to assist with their teaching. Moodle is also incorporated
into other programs and administrative areas and is used as a main resource for Augustana Center for Teaching and Learning
(ACTL). The ACTL Moodle site is organized into three main programs; New Faculty Programs; Teaching and Learning Resources;
and Teaching Writing: Reading Groups and Workshops
The ACTL Moodle site includes event calendars,
new faculty orientation and teaching circle
programs, teaching and learning resources, and
forums with the goal of improving student learning.
The New Faculty Programs site houses
information specific to new faculty orientation and
Teaching Circle Sessions. It also includes a
Handbook for New Faculty, college technology
information, summaries of workshops and forums.
The Teaching and Learning Resources site is the
most extensive of the three ACTL programs.
Resources are organized by topics pertinent to the
teaching and learning programming and faculty
interest. (i.e., Classroom Assessment, Course Syllabi,
Learning Styles). Power point presentations,
bibliographies, forums, and faculty/presenter
resources recommendations are included.
The Teaching Writing Reading Group meets once a month to
discuss scholarship on the teaching of writing and to share ideas
for putting composition theory into practice. Subjects for study
and discussion have included personal writing vs. academic
writing, the use of response groups and collaborative writing, the
politics of style, feminism and composition, and responding to
student papers. An entree to contemporary composition theory,
the Teaching Writing Reading Group gives Augustana’s writing
faculty the opportunity to learn not just from their own
experiences in the classroom, but to learn as well from the
experiences of their peers and from contemporary research in
composition studies." Readings are placed on the ACTL
Moodle site as preparation for each reading group session.
