I thought the article “ F ord E m b alm ing G eneral A v iatio n ” was excellent. 1 placed it
in my stack o f things to tak e to w ork (Sierra A cadem y o f A eronautics) to copy and
distribute to my im m ediate su p erio r a n d tw o co-w orkers. Because o f m ore pressing
com m itm ents, it stayed in the “ sta c k ” an d went now here until late Ju ly — no w onder
G eneral A viation is going dow n the tu b e if everyone is like me. L ate Ju ly I did d o as I
intended, and the next thing 1 noticed was a copy o f the article o n the P resid e n t’s desk.
My im m ediate superior, Vice P resid en t o f the com pany, th o u g h t it im p o rta n t enough
to pass on.
I ’m very pro u d to be a 99, a n d especially p ro u d to have m em b er’s articles passed on
in this m anner.

W hat a difference!! Since 1 have been a 99 for a b o u t a year now , I have seen a b o u t
equal am ounts o f the old an d new 99 N EW S. T he present fo rm at is q u ite d ifferen t and
interesting — it’s a challenge to try an d find the N orthw est Section an d any news from
the E astern W ashington C h ap te r!! F o r th a t reaso n , I did enjoy th e old layout m uch
better. C onvenience. But I will have to ad m it, this new one is really som ething!!

This is in regard to Jo an K erw in’s sto ry in the A ugust 99 N EW S. I am m aking these
com m ents because I do n o t believe th a t her article tells the w hole sto ry . This is n o t
m eant as a defense o f the oil com panies — L o rd know s they d o n ’t need my help — b u t 1
believe they have been som ew hat un ju stly m aligned over the w hole situ atio n .
R eferring to Avco Lycom ing Flyer d ated F eb ru ary 1971 advising o f the tren d o f the
oil industry to elim inate 80/87 fuel; know ing a b o u t this five years ag o , w hy h a sn ’t
Lycom ing adjusted its engines o r d iscontinued the m an u factu re o f engines requiring
80/87? Furtherm ore, why did th e general flying public w ho were also aw are o f this
trend continue to buy these engines? A fter all the nam e o f th e gam e in a free enterp rise
system such as ours is th at nasty w ord “ p ro fit” an d I d o n ’t believe any co m p an y is
going to continue to m an u fa c tu re a p ro d u c t fo r w hich there is n o d em an d .
Shell Oil C om pany, the last I h e a rd , is still p roducing 80 /8 7 fuel in its facility in
W ood River, IL. A ccording to an article published in Business an d C om m ercial
A viation, S tandard Oil o f C a lifo rn ia was q u o ted as saying th eir co m p an y will pro d u ce
80/87 as long as there is a d em an d a n d p ro fit. M obil Oil C o m p an y says it will contin u e
to produce 80/87 fuel. A s a m a tte r o f interest, this sam e article stated th a t som e experts
in oil production blam e the engine problem s encountered in using 100 LL in 80/87
engines on new m ethods o f refining ra th e r th an in octan e differences. T hey claim th at
the new m ethods o f refining are inexpensive carry-overs o f sim ilar m eth o d s learned
during the refining o f au to m o b ile fuels. T he experts p o in t o u t, q u ite correctly, th a t
w ater cooled a u to engines are m uch less susceptible to problem s caused by refining
m ethods than air cooled a irc ra ft engines.
To wholly blam e the oil com panies is a fallacy w hen in m any cases it is either th e fault
o f the d istrib u to r w ho wishes to reduce the num ber o f grades he is req u ired to carry in
his inventory, or the dealer w ho is lim ited in storage space and finds it m ore p ro fita b le
to elim inate 80/87 and use these facilities fo r je t fuel.
W riting letters may have som e results, b u t 1 believe a m ore effective w ay to get o u r
message across is to , w henever possible, p u rchase your gasoline only fro m facilities th at
o ffer both 80 and 100 octan e even if you hap p en to use 100 o ctan e in y o u r a irc ra ft. I
believe this action w ould speak m uch louder th an letters.

D uring my first m o n th as y o u r P resid en t, I attend ed several
Section meetings. Besides the great enjoym ent I have derived
from m eeting w ith so m any N inety N ines, I have learned many
new things and picked up several new thou g h ts. 1 w ould like to
sh are one o f these with you.
A t the N orthw est Section m eeting in Sunriver, O regon,
G o vern o r G ene N ora Jessen p ro p o sed th a t the C hapters em bark
u p o n an “ A d o p t a C h a p te r” p ro g ram ; th at is, th at each C hapter
should con tact an o th er th a t m ay be floundering, o r have lost
interest, and invite th a t C h a p te r fo r reciprocal m eetings and
activities. In this way we could re-generate interest in the
m em bers o f the C h a p te r to again fu n ctio n w ith direction and
p u rpose and with fresh en th u siasm . W hat a lovely idea. I am
g ratefu l to G ene N o ra fo r this b eau tifu l th o u g h t. I w ould like to
propose to each o f you th a t we expand th a t idea and em bark
u p o n an “ a d o p t a m em b er” them e.
H ow m any tim es have we said “ the sam e m em bers always
a tte n d all o f the functions an d d o all o f the w o rk ? ” L e t’s resolve
to change th at now . If each o f you will select one m em ber w ho is
less active, and “ a d o p t” her, thin k o f w hat we can accom plish.
Pick up the p h o n e an d call y o u r “ a d o p te d ” sister N inety-N ine
a n d invite her to go w ith you to the next C h ap ter m eeting, o r the
next C h ap ter p ro ject, or to jo in you at the next Section M eeting.
W e can d o uble o u r atte n d a n c e an d bring back to active
p articip atio n , m any m em bers w ho have go tten ou t o f the habit o f
a tten d in g . D o n ’t give up! If she tu rn s you dow n once, call again,
a n d if she tu rn s you dow n th e second tim e, call a th ird . If you are
successful, you will e n jo y a feeling o f g reat satisfaction, an d will
have found a new friend.

the nam e has been shortened fro m Flying
A ctivities, the scope has been increased. W e
have becom e so diversified in the types o f
activities in which we p articip ate, it seem ed
logical to have one com m ittee w hich w ould
encom pass not only aw ards, achievem ents,
sem inars, A P T , com m unity service p ro ­
jects, “ fu n ” events such as P o k e r R uns,
Flyins, etc., but w ould also include all
contests and races.
Am delighted to tell you I have inherited
this fun jo b from C h a r F alk en b erg ’s
capable hands. I’d like you to thin k o f me
as the Activities Coordinator, th e o n e to
w hom you can brag o f y o u r p ast achieve­
m ents (as individuals o r collectively), to
w hom you announce plan s fo r fu tu re

pilots, y o u ’re not paying yo u r fair share!
H ow ever, you will, w hether your legislators
in W ashington vote fo r it o r n o t. In an
econom y m ove, the F . A . A . is d iscontinuing
the services o f the F .A .A . A cadem y team s
w hich conduct the Flight In stru cto rs R eva­
lid atio n Clinics. T he clinics will be turned
over to p rivate gro u p s, w ith the a tte n d a n t
fees w hich they require. N ot only will there
be extra fees, b u t we are also losing the
extrem ely high q uality speakers an d the
benefit o f getting the in fo rm a tio n “ from
the h o rse’s m o u th ” .

g roups also o ffe r high q u ality speakers and
in stru ctio n , but the cost m ay well be
p rohibitive for som e. A ccording to the
A .O .P .A ., they will finish o u t 1976 a t $35

$45 each.

T ru e, b u t this boils dow n to the sam e song
the D epartm ent o f T ra n sp o rta tio n has been
singing for the last few years regarding the
C o st A llocation S tudy. S oak th e G eneral
A viation pilot — if they can a ffo rd to fly,
then can a ffo rd an y th in g . T he D .O .T .
c o u ld n ’t get the C ost A llocatio n bill
th ro u g h C ongress, so they figured o u t a
w ay fo r us to pay fo r th e services we receive
to private organizations. T h a t w ay, we can
pay twice. O nce th ro u g h fuel tax an d the
Use T ax levied o n each a irc ra ft being flow n
in G eneral A viation, a n d again th ro u g h
paying p rivate org an izatio n s for providing
the service the F .A .A . is collecting th e tax
to provide. R enters, w ho never see these
bills, are paying these sam e bills th ro u g h
increased rental rates.
If all goes well w ith this “ econom y
m ove” , doubtless they can th in k o f others.
H ow a b o u t elim inating th e F .A .A . Flight
Inspectors? A fter all, we now have exam in­
ers w ho, fo r a fee, can give you yo u r flight
tests. T h en , o f course, they can elim inate
th e F .S .S . except fo r p h o n ed in requests for
w eath er an d filing o f flight plans. (M aybe
they can arran g e w ith th e telephone
co m p an y to pu t charges fo r these services
o n y o u r phone bill?) A ny w ay you look at
it, they are trying to weasel o u t o f the
services provided to G eneral A viation.
F or any governm ent b ranch to w ant to
econom ize, is a laudable g oal, b u t why do
they feel they m ust exercise these econom ies
in areas w hich a ffect G eneral A v iation
only? Unless w e’re back to the old C ost
A llocation again. You see, the m oney
collected from us really needs to be spent to
im prove baggage facilities for the airlines
an d to im prove term in al facilities. A fte r all,
we d o n ’t w ant to com prom ise safety in
those areas, d o we?
If they truly w ant to econom ize, I have a
few suggestions for them : H ow ab o u t
discontinuing the p rinting o f the “ cutsie”
signs they have hanging in F .B .O .s and
Flight Service S tations aro u n d the country?
Y o u ’ve all seen them ; the c a rto o n airplane,
obviously distressed, w ith a little rhym ed
m oral rem inding the pilot o f som ething
they all h ad to know to get th eir private
license. H ow a b o u t elim inating the give­
aw ay o f Flight T raining H an d b o o k s, Flight
In stru cto rs M anuals an d o th e r printed
m aterials fo r w hich, unless y o u ’re in the
right place at the right tim e, you have to
pay a couple dollars?
If they m ust elim inate p ersonnel, why the
co n stru ctio n o f useless tow ers at low traffic
airp o rts? These tow ers all m ust be m anned
at a considerable cost, n o t only in salaries,
b u t fo r training personnel. H ow a b o u t the
N atio n al T ra n sp o rtatio n Safety B oard?
W hy d o they investigate accidents involving
privately ow ned, privately flow n aircraft?
They d o n o t investigate a u to m o bile acci­
d ents, not even those involving taxi-cabs
w hich are operated fo r hire. T h e N .T .S .B .
is properly involved in any com m ercial
tra n sp o rta tio n accident b u t should not have
to m aintain personnel to re-investigate
accidents in p rivate airp lan es w hich are
already being investigated by th e F .A .A .
You can all think o f o th er econom ies that
could be instituted w ithout com prom ising
th e safety o f G eneral A viation. Let your
legislators know w hat they are. Tell them
th a t you are aw are o f this back door
ap p ro a ch to C ost A llocation , an d th at you
object.
By the tim e you read this, it will be too
late to prevent the d um ping o f the
A cadem y team , b u t there is alw ays a chance
to back track an d u n d o the h arm .

In reviewing the c o u rt cases digested in
Ninety-Nines News in recent m o n th s, we
have often seen the U nited S tates g o v ern ­
m ent, or an arm o f it, as a d efen d an t. T here
are m any m ore volum es o f cases, how ever,
where the governm ent is instead the
p lain tiff — the prosecutor. T hese a re the
thousands o f adm inistrative hearings
brought by the Federal A viation A dm in is­
tration before a single adm in istrativ e ju d g e.
Their decisions are seldom m ade public,
although they d o set precedents to be
followed in later cases, and very few o f
them are appealed to a co u rt. It is these
adm inistrative hearings th a t this colum n
will be devoted to in the next tw o issues.
In FAA v. Fichtner (1973) th e pilo t o f a
small com m uter airlines lost his license as
the result o f flying in to icing co n d itio n s on
tw o different occasions. A lth o u g h there
was no emergency either tim e, th e FA A
held that the pilot had violated FA R 135.85
which prohibits flight in to know n or
forecast light or m oderate icing cond itio n s,
and FA R 135.73 which requires th a t flight
conducted IFR m ust be w ith a co-pilot on
board (both parts being applicab le to air
taxi operations.) T he judge stated th a t the
purpose o f the regulations is to p ro m o te
passenger safety, and the p u rp o se o f
im posing sanctions on a pilot in violation
o f the regulations is threefold: (1) rem edial;
(2) as a deterrent to o th er pilots; a n d (3) to
foster com pliance w ith regulations. W hile
these two flights ended safely, the ju d g e
noted that they m ight have ended o th e r­
wise, and he affirm ed the suspension o f the
pilo t’s com m ercial license an d his in stru ­
ment rating, until such tim e as the pilot
re-passed qualifying tests fo r b o th .
FAA v. Gross was a typical situ atio n o f
changing w eather conditions th a t were not
expected, and w hich have caused m any
pilots m uch woe, if not m ore th a n th at.
W hen pilot G ross took o ff from N o rth ­
am pton, M assachusetts, on a flight to
Rochester, New Y ork, he had received a
w eather briefing w hich he interp re ted as
indicating that a V FR flight w as possible.
H e had turned back the previous day,
however, due to bad w eather, a n d had
called for w eather in fo rm atio n several
times on the fateful day in q uestio n before
finally deciding he could m ake it.
Shortly after 10:00 a.m . G ross asked for
assistance from the A lbany tow er, stating
he was having trouble m aintain in g VFR
over the hills north o f A lbany. A fte r ten
m inutes o f discussion, he declared an
emergency, and was cleared to fly th ro u g h
clouds to get “ on to p ” — 12,500 feet.
A fter over an hour o f com m unications, and
with the assistance o f a tw in B onanza, he
was guided dow n through th e clouds to a

landing a t A lbany at a p p ro x im ately 11:57
a .m . T he result was the filing o f a violation
against him by the FA A fo r being in the
clouds w ithout an in stru m en t ratin g , for
careless flying, and fo r violating the basic
w eather m inim um s fo r VFR flight.
G ross defended his actio n s by saying first
th a t he had been given erro n eo u s w eather
in fo rm a tio n , and secondly, as a result o f
th a t in fo rm atio n was “ req u ired to receive
em ergency help because his lim ited experi­
ence in the air did n o t enable him to ju d g e
early enough th at the w eather and cloud
fo rm atio n s were w orse th an the fo rec a sts.”
T he adm inistrative ju d g e w as n o t im pressed
w ith the defense. T he w eather rep o rt
cu rren t a t the tim e G ross to o k o ff stated
there were clouds in layers a t 3000 a n d 7000
feet, an d the ju d g e felt th a t G ross used
p o o r judgem en t in electing to atte m p t the
flight betw een the layers. H e could also
have m ade the tra d itio n a l 180° and
retu rn ed to b etter co n d itio n s once he saw
the w eather starting to d eterio ra te. T h ere­
fore, he was fo u n d to be in violation o f
FA R 91.9 (careless flight) an d FA R 61.3
(n o n -in stru m en t rated in the clouds). The
ju d g e said th a t the “ fact th a t G ross
declared an em ergency an d was instructed
to clim b th ro u g h the clouds an d later
descend th ro u g h the clouds does n o t a ffo rd
him any im m unity from this re g u la tio n .”
H e was cleared o f a v iolation o f FA R
91,105 (basic VFR w eather m inim um s), as
th ere was no w ay o f proving w hether he
was in the clouds or only in haze an d a t a
p ro p e r distance from clouds p rio r to the
tim e he declared an em ergency. T he fact
th a t he was not willfully careless was held

Jo rd a n . Dave was n o t only an o u tstan d in g
perfo rm er, b u t an eloqu en t sp eak er as well.

W ilm ington, 1 m entioned th at the S m ith­
son ian had suggested we ro u n d o u t our
history to 30 years w ith an “ ev en t” along
the course o f the original P o w d er P u ff in
1947. This possibility was discussed at the
A W T A R B oard M eeting in W ilm ington,
an d fu rth er plans were m ade during
co nvention in P hilad elp h ia. R esult: T here
W IL L be an event in 1977.
It will start July 2 in P alm Springs, C A ,
w ith proposed Stops in T ucson, A Z , El
P aso , M idland, an d D allas, T X , Shreve­
p o rt, LA, Jack so n , M S, M onroeville, A L ,
Thomasville, G A , an d end in T am p a,
Florida on July 5. T he flight will be open to
w om en pilots only, with n o age lim it on
airc ra ft. Each leg will be a sep arate contest
in th at we will mix speed, proficiency,
picture hunts, ect., all fo r p oints. The
co n testan t w ho accum ulates the m ost
p oints will be the overall w inner.
M eanw hile, the S m ithsonian will have
issued cachet covers to be carried by
contestan ts, declared July 1977 “ P ow der
P u ff D erby M o n th ” an d the Race as their
“ M ilestone o f F lig h t".
A t convention, this event was endorsed
by the N inety-N ines. C h ap ters concerned
with the W estern S tops have indicated their
willingness to hostess. M arian B anks an d I
have set up m eetings with S tops E ast o f
D allas startin g Septem ber 13.
F or speed racers, these plans seem like
com m itm ent to the R etirem ent H om e.
A W T A R is, how ever, appreciative o f the
ho n o rs bestow ed by the S m ith so n ian . We
will d o o u r honest best to m ake it a flight to
rem em ber, and hope y ’all com e. Race or

A rk an sas, was rededicated o n A ug u st 22,
1976 at 2:00 P .M . This day has g one dow n
in A viation H istory with o u r own C h arter
N inety-N ine Louise T haden present fo r the
cerem onies in her hom e tow n o f B en to n ­
ville.
Louise M cP hetridge T h ad en grew u p in
B entonville in the early days o f av iatio n .
She becam e hooked on av iatio n a fte r her
first $5 b arn sto rm er ride, and th ro u g h
d eterm in atio n and the g o o d fo rtu n e o f
being at the right place at the right tim e,
w as able to be a p art o f this dynam ic new
aviation industry.
Louise set m any a ltitu d e an d en d u ran ce
records during her days in av iatio n . She
w on the first W o m en ’s A ir D erby in 1929
flying a T ravelaire. A m elia E a rh a rt and
B lanche Noyes were am ong the 20 oth er
w om en w ho com peted in this race from
S an ta M onica, C A to C o lu m b u s, O H . In
1936, the first tim e w om en w ere allow ed to
com pete with men in the Bendix T ra n sc o n ­
tinental A ir Race from NY to Los A ngeles,
Louise, w ith B lanche as co-pilot, cam e in
first. They flew a Beech Staggerw ing and
crossed the contin en t in 14 hours an d 15
m inutes.

Staggerw ing and a T ravelaire w ere brought
to the field fo r this occasion and a new
p erm an en t display case filled with her

Staggerwings. The Staggerw ing form ation
flight w as a thrill to the sp ectato rs as well as
the m om ents o f p resentation o f the gold
plaq u e and the painting to L ouise T haden.

In the 1940’s T o n y , A n to in ette E dg ett, was doing reader research fo r th e C urtis
P ublishing C o. She interview ed a D allas b an k er w ho was so im pressed w ith her w riting
ability th a t he suggested she go to w ork for Southern Flight Magazine — now Flight
M agazine. She becam e a s ta ff w riter in H o u sto n under ow ner, G eorge H ad d aw ay . She
m oved to their D allas office an d becam e so h o oked on w riting th a t she has been doing it
ever since.
T ony was b o rn in M oscow , Id a h o . H er F ath e r, M ike, was a geologist w ho w as on the
team th a t discovered th e T ea p o t D om e oil deposit in W yom ing. B ecause o f his
traveling, he put her in M rs. W illiam ’s P re p a rato ry School fo r Y oung Ladies at 8th &
C o o p er in F o rt W o rth . L ater she w ent to high school in Los Angeles an d to o k special
courses at U C L A .
In 1945 she m arried a pilot nam ed H o llan d Page, and in 1952 he gave Cross Country
News to her as a b irth d ay g ift. C ross Country News, a n aviation new spaper, is
published at M eacham Field in F o rt W o rth . T ony is now E d ito r & P ublisher. She has
“ jazzed u p ” th e p u blication in her ow n inim itable style!
T ony has particip ated in th e P o w d er P u ff D erby an d once w on a Texas flight
com petitio n . She holds th e A m elia E arh a rt M edal fo r her activities in prom oting
av iatio n and is the only w riter to receive, 4 tim es, the Sherm an F airchild International
S afety A w ard. She has w on the Felicity Burnelli A w ard, nam ed fo r th e sister o f Vincent
J. Burnelli, fam ous a irc ra ft designer.
T ony was nam ed A viation W o m an o f the Year in th e early sixties, an aw ard by the
W o m a n ’s N atio n al A ero n au tical A ssociation. She has been a m em ber o f th e A viation
W riters A ssn., since 1947, an d in 1962 w as given the to p w riting aw ard from the
A viation Space W riters, an in te rn a tio n a l o rganization.
H er w riting got her in to flying. In 1941 she w rote an essay o n why she w anted to learn
to fly. H er essay w on first place — th e prize was a flying course.
T he vivacious, fun-loving T ony is saluted in the C ongressional R ecord. She is one o f
10 w om en in the U .S . nam ed by C a lifo rn ia C ong. D on H . C lausen in his trib u te on the
flo o r o f the H ouse to “ dynam ic an d dedicated w om en. . .w ho have been aviation
pioneers an d played a lead role in advancing aviatio n , aero n au tics a n d aerospace
pro g ram s an d sciences” .

Her Heart Wore Wings

On Septem ber 2, 1976, the N inety N ines
lost a true an d faithful frien d . Stella
H ardin, from San Diego C h a p te r suc­
cum bed to a ten year battle with cancer. As
a local news item stated , Stella w as a
Registered N urse, but her heart w ore
wings! She learned to fly in 1939, in New
York C ity, joined the N inety Nines in
H awaii in 1950, an d tran sferred to San
Diego in 1958, w here she was C h a p te r
C hairm an from 1964-66.
I just learned an interesting sto ry from
D on H ardin. In 1941, when th e Navy
needed Floyd Bennett Field, and th erefo re
pushed G eneral A viation o u t, Stella and

crip tio n o f her colleague in the air, Bobby
T erry w ho died in A ugust. M rs. T erry was
the first A u stralian w om an to w on her own
plane an d the second to hold a com m ercial
p ilo t’s license, a n d w as one o f the
fo rm atio n w ho flew o u t to m eet A m y
Jo h n so n w hen she landed in Sydney. M rs.
T erry left the records to o th ers. She used
her plane only to fly from her p ro p erty at
Q uirindi to Sydney.
Nancy added th at Bobby T erry was the
second A ustralian to jo in the N inety Nines
in 1936, follow ing M rs. Keith M iller w as a

C a n a d a ’s first licensed lady pilo t, Eileen
V ollick, was unveiled by m em bers o f the
fam ily in front o f H a m ilto n ’s new C ity Hall
on Sunday, Septem ber 19th, 1976. M any
local and provincial d ignitaries were pre­
sent.
Eileen obtained her license in the year
1928 at the J.V . E lliot Flying School
located at nearby G h e n t’s C rossing. The
p laq u e was erected by th e M inistry o f
C u ltu re and R ecreation, H eritage F o u n d a­
tio n B ranch, and was due to th e effo rts of
M rs. D orothy R enwick, M useum C hair­
m an o f the East C an a d a Section o f the 99,

C enter has for several m onths been holding
weekly classes called “ R ainch eck ” . T his is
a course which encom passes all three parts
o f the A ir T raffic C o n tro l System ; Flight
Service, Tow ers, and C enters. Specialists
from all three com e to tell the stu d en ts w hat
their (FA A) function is and how they all fit
together. The classes last fo u r nights and
are held usually at the center train in g room .
Septem ber 13th, the D allas R edbirds
attended as a group and by all c o u n ts, h ad a
blast. The first night, T iner L apsley, local
A PS, gave a lecture on sp in /sta ll accidents
th at are on the increase. We also heard
from Jim Bedgood from the D allas FSS on
w hat was available at your local FSS and
how to get a good w eather briefing. H e also
discussed w hat the FSS specialists needs to
know about you, the pilot, to help him
tailor a briefing to your type a irc ra ft and
y our pilot qualifications. H is pictures o f
w eather and particularly the recent D allas
T o rn ad o were great. His discussion o f how
a n IFR flight plan gets in to th e A T C system
was m ost inform ative. L ots o f q uestions
back and forth. O ne o f th e “ teasers” was
th at each time we went to class we saw the
controllers at w ork and knew th a t one night
we w ould be in there with them .
T uesday or day 2 brought us lectures by
D ennis G rah am , DFW T R A C O N o n the
D FW T ow er, D FW A pproach C o n tro l, and
the DFW T C A . H e discussed th e arrival
and dep artu re routes, the V FR ro u te across
the T C A , and the rad ar used fo r ap p ro a c h
control with the new sophisticated c o m p u ­

com m ents from H ank N ew m an, D irector
o f the Southw est R egion o f the F A A . M r.

C h ap ter 99s, conceived an u n iq u e contest idea in connection with
the n atio n al, state and local B icentennial festivities.

assem bled in kits with id en tificatio n “ clues” prepared by Bill
K ershner, aviation a u th o r an d co n test ju d g e, were sold to eager
c o n testan ts for $25.00. C o n te sta n ts w ere given 30 days in which
to identify the lan d m ark s an d to indicate th e historical
significance o f the p h o to g ra p h .
M om entum developed speedily am o n g th e 99s, contestants,
Bicentennial officials, an d local TV statio n s an d new spapers.

interest. Bill K ershner’s flight m an u als were featured at another
b o o th . Several h ang gliders w ere d em o n strated — as well as a hot
air balloon w hich carried passengers fo r rides to the length o f
m ooring ropes. T he P ip er Flight C en ter exhibit was well attended
a n d also th at o f the G lass In su lato rs o f T ennessee which featured
energy saving devices.
A special 99 exhibit provided a superb historical perspective o f
th e 99s (particularly th e T ennessee C h ap ter) an d prom oted
interest, in fo rm atio n an d enth u siasm dbout the International 99
p ro g ram s to the th o u san d s o f visitors.
Special th an k s were extended to 49'/2ers Leon R idenour, Fred
V reeland, & Ferris T h o m as fo r th eir stau n ch su p p o rt, and to Bill
C hildress, E d ito r & the Knoxville Journal which facilitated

The C aribbean Section is at long last a
reality! For several years three very
frustrated 99s w atched eagerly as w om en
student pilots progressed to w ard s their
licenses only to have them leave the islands
before we reached the m agic n u m b er o f five
to start a Section. Suddenly this spring we
found we had w om en getting their licenses
one after the o th er and had fo u r, then five,
then six 99s. At this point we could see o u r
dreain o f a C aribbean Section a b o u t to
com e true. By the tim e o u r C h a rte r was
approved at the spring B oard M eeting, o ur
m em bership had reached the unbelievable
(to us) num ber o f eleven w ith several m ore
potential licensed pilots an d stu d en ts.
T hough we all presently reside in the
B aham a Islands, we did not w ant to lim it
o u r Section to this country a n d hope we
have laid the ground w ork fo r an ex panding
99 Section th ro u g h o u t the m any islands o f
the C aribbean.
W hile we are a C aribbean Section by
residence, o u r m em bership is truly “ in ter­
n atio n al” with w om en w ho are C an ad ia n ,
B aham ian, A m erican, British and P olish.
O ur gals own six airplanes (three singles
and three twins) and have flying experience
ranging from the new P rivate P ilot to A T P
candidate and all stages in betw een. Flying
activities run the gam ut from sightseeing,
shopping trips to F lorida, P o w d er P u ff
Derby races, M ed-Evac flights, flights fo r
BASRA (B aham as A ir-Sea Rescue A ssocia­
tion — B aham ian all volunteer version o f
the U .S. C oast G uard) to vacatio n and
business trips to nearby islands, N o rth
A m erica and E urope.
T he C arib b ean Section also represents a
wide variety o f careers including fo rm er
an d present airline hostesses, d o c to r, nursean eth etist, com m ercial a rtist, bank execu­
tive, flight in stru cto r, lawyer an d shop
m anager. We feel we have an extrem ely
interesting g ro u p o f 99s and plan to
in tro d u ce you to all o f us in com ing issues
o f the 99 N EW S.
M ost o f us learned to fly in F reep o rt and
feel we have the best o f all possible w orlds
— alm ost co n stan tly beau tifu l flying
w eather an d a relatively uncrow ded and
fully instrum ented a irp o rt. T his, coupled
w ith u npolluted air an d a variety o f islands
to fly to fo r cross-countries, m akes learning
to fly an even m ore m arvelous experience.
M uch o f o u r pilotage includes learning to
“ re a d ” w ater colors an d sighting sandy
beaches — with co u n tin g large fish an d rays
in the shallow s fo r diversion.

credentials as well as having been the

few m ore as tim e goes by, as she reports
th a t she is “ still busy doing hospital
consulting, w riting, teaching, lecturing (38
states) and in general enjoying life despite

Becomes Navy Plot
Sue Mason, a 99 from R ingw ood, OK,
will be one o f fo u r w om en rep o rtin g for
N aval pilot training at Pensacola, FL on
O ct. 12. A fter an eight week N aval O fficer
School, the cadets will begin flight train in g ,
w hich will last alm ost a year. T he w om en
will not be allowed to fly in co m b at (they
are legally barred from this endeavor)
although they may be com m issioned to fly
anything that any other N aval officer can
fly. Sue indicated that she is looking
forw ard to the challenge o f a irc ra ft carrier
o perations and hopes th at this technique
will be part o f the w om en’s train in g .
Sue is a Social Science g ra d u a te o f
O klahom a State U niversity w here she was
also a flight instructor fo r several years. In
fact, her own academ ic progress was
som ew hat delayed as she first to o k and
then taught every flying course offered.
Most recently, in addition to teaching basic
and advanced students, she has been O S U ’s
aerobatic in stru cto r, using a B ellanca
D ecathalon.
Sue had checked out in a taildragger long
before becom ing involved w ith the D ecath­
alon and aerobatic flight. T his was acco m ­
plished when she taxied herself aro u n d a
pasture in South D akota befo re bringing
hom e the 1947 A eronca C h ief she had ju st
purchased from “ a little old m an w ho flew
it only on Sundays.” T he C h ief an d all her
o ther flying experience will now be p u t on
the shelf for a while as Sue sta rts all over
an d learns to “ Fly N avy .”
Sue applied for the N avy p ro g ram tw o
years ago when the first w om en were
accepted into the p rogram . A t th a t tim e,
she was ineligible since she did not yet have
her college degree. She kept her applicatio n
up to date an d was inform ed in July th at
she had been accepted. She has spent the
last tw o m onths in p rep aratio n — w inding
up personal affairs and getting in shape
physically by a daily program o f running
and swimming which the Y M C A helped her
to set-up. Now the years o f an ticip atio n
and weeks o f preparation are building to a
climax and Sue was anxious fo r O cto b er
12th to arrive so she could get on w ith the
business o f “ Flying N avy.”

A num ber o f New E ngland Section
N inety-N ines have been flying as “ subject
p ilo ts” in aircraft belonging to th e M assachusettes In stitu te o f T echnology, Lincoln
L ab o rato ry . W e were invited to p articip ate
in this testing pro g ram to help assess the
utility and acceptability o f a p ro p o sed FA A
collision avoidance system called In te rm it­
tent Positive C o n tro l (IP C ). M any test
flights have already been flow n by p ro fe s­
sional test pilots to verify the co m m an d
logic o f an experim ental version o f IP C .
Full assessm ent o f IP C m ust, how ever,
include flights in a live air traffic en v iro n ­
m ent by typical pilots, i.e., subject p ilots,
u n fam iliar with the system . W e were
p articip atin g , th erefo re, as p a rt o f a large
g ro u p o f “ subject p ilo ts” selected because
o f our wide range an d variety o f experience
an d unfam iliarity , hence o bjectivity to w ard
IP C . O u r range o f responses to th e IP C was
expected to be sim ilar to th a t o f the
u ltim ate IP C users. A nd, we were advised
th a t we all m ay be ‘users’ by 1980.

T he L ake Erie A ir D erby, a proficiency
race sponsored by Lake Erie 99s, w as held
in association with the C leveland N ational
A ir Show over the L ab o r Day w eekend.
T wenty-six planes were lined u p , but one
failed to sta rt (and how d isap p o inting to
C arol G ale, a pilot o f less th an two
m onths). It took only 13 m inutes to get the
o th er 25 o ff on their 234 m ile course
requiring low app ro ach es at th ree u ncon­
trolled fields. First place tro p h y w ent to
Joyce and Mickey Odom o f G rosse P o in t,
M ich, with a score o f .9902. Second was
R ichard M axfield o f A u ro ra , O hio and
R obert Barris, H ighland H ts. w ith a .9871.
T h ird place Ray K oogler and G ary Fitzm artin o f C leveland averaged .9867, while
fo u rth place Lydia Rogers o f Broadview
H ts. and Jan et Squire o f A k ro n settled for

Spanish Peaks Chapter had their an n u al
fly-in brunch on O ctober 17 a t the
M innequa U niversity C lub in P u eb lo ,
C o lo rad o . W illiam M adsen, U .S . A ir F orce
A cadem y, spoke on C o lo rad o A viation
H istory. A side o f beef was raffled o ff with
the proceeds going to upcom ing ch ap te r
aviation education projects.
Oklahoma Chapter co-hosted a C F I
refresher course along with the O k lah o m a
A eronautics C om m ission one w eekend in
O ctober. This was the last o f the free ones
(with the FA A conducting the classes) on
the schedule.
Oklahoma Chapter also assisted w ith the
ann u al Big B rother-L ittle B ro th er Fishing
D erby taking place on the sm all lake at Will
Rogers W orld A irport in S eptem ber. Ruth
Jones and Skip Carter helped supervise the
fishing. International 99s d o n ated coloring
books for prizes. Sue Halpain to o k the 6
w inners with the biggest catches fo r an
airplane ride.
The Tulsa Chapter had a record tu rn o u t
at their July fly-in at F o untain H ead Lodge
on Lake E ufaula. M em bers, 4 9 ‘/ 2er, and
guests were eager to greet Jan Mauritson
and Sue McBride, back from the P P D and
to hear their descriptive rep o rt o f their
exciting experiences.

Blue Ridge 99s again sponso red a “ Fly
for L ife” day, A ugust 22nd, in G reenville,
S.C . Proceeds from this event go to the
A m erican C ancer Society. T hey to p p ed o ff
with $2,800 — not bad for a d a y ’s w ork!
M eyer greeted us, an d we w ere divided into
three g roups, w ith one heading first to the
g iant 727 an d D C-10 sim u lato rs, a n o th e r to
the c o m p u to r reservation center, an d the
th ird to the m aintenance h an g ar. Everyone
had a chance to crash a t least one o f the
sim ulators, an d m any agreed th a t the
m aintenance h an g ar was alm ost m ore
fascinating th an the sim u lato rs. It is one o f
the largest cantilever buildings in the w orld,
an d has ninety fo o t d o o rs w hich open and
close electrically. W e saw m any oth er
m arvels, including th eir c o m p u to r system .

Seattle Chapter asked each m em ber an d
prospective to fly solo to A rlin g to n , even if
they had to rent o r b o rro w an a irp lan e to
accom plish this m ission. H opefully this got
the “ inactives” flying again. They did this
once before an d everyone agreed th at it was
a barrel o f fun. T hey really invaded the
field!

the second W ednesday (Greater Seattle’s
m eeting day) was excellent in Septem ber.

balloon factory in Pontiac. Nancy Hecksel

So on A ugust 24th, a lovely w arm sum m er
night, she took o ff in the b allo o n . It was
one o f the m ost fantastic experiences she
had ever had. E verything th a t you w ould
have ever im agined a b o u t flying in a h o t air
balloon is there. T he ow ner o f th e b allo o n ,
Lynn H arding, even let her w ork the
burners and talked her th rough a landing,
which she “ m anaged better th an som e with
the M ooney.”

think it would be terrific if every chapter
scouted around its own area, setting a goal

busy 99s and ’49'/2ers surely set th e scene at
several airports for the M ontana Big Sky
fem inine flyers.
In May the group ran , drove, o r flew to
Laurel, not to paint the tow n red, ra th e r to
freshen the runw ay num bers with bright
yellow. At the local pizza p a rlo r, luncheon
was provided the w orkers th ro u g h the
Laurel C ham ber o f C om m erce.
In Septem ber som e m o re p ainting was
done on A ugusta airp o rt, w hich is at the
base o f the Rockies and w est o f G reat Falls.

do it. Cape Girardeau Area Chapter is
going to try a rum m age sale, a n d Iowa
Chapter reports that its new sale item ,
C hristm as C ards, is doing very well.
Quad-City Area Chapter had a plane wash
in A ugust and netted their c h ap ter $110.
They w ashed, debugged, an d cleaned the
interiors o f 9 airplanes.

Coastal Bend 99s painted the num bers
a n d centerline at the E d n a, Texas airport
this sum m er. In A ugust they helped
sp o n so r a safety sem inar at W harton,
Texas attended by 60 area pilots.
Dallas Chapter co-sponsored the first
safety sem inar scheduled fo r the Dallas
G A D O area this fall. T his one was a
S tall/S p in P ro g ram put on by ex-99 NEW S
E d ito r Saundra’s 49'/2er, T iner Lapslay,
w h o ’s the new A ccident P revention Special­

The El Paso Chapter has really been busy
w ith projects o f m any kinds lately. T hey

airstrip was so well attended th at they have
been invited back to do it again.
El Paso Chapter held a one week sem inar
on aviation fo r G irl Scouts. Lois Hailey

Shreve talked ab o u t the w eather. O thers
assisted on tours. O n the last day, Sim
Lindley, Joyce Canavan, an d Marilyn
Cragin gave the scouts rides in th eir planes.
Jean Cartier organized the entire sem inar

Last Minute Effort Brings 2nd Prize
Golden Triangle m em bers Jo McCarrell
and Linda H ooker (w ith one d a y ’s notice
an d assisted by som e o f J o ’s neighbors) put
together a float for the local c o u n ty fair
parad e in A rkansas. T heir flo at w on second
prize o u t o f tw enty-five or m ore flo ats. The
m ost stand-out feature was th e 10’xlO ’
airplane (painted 99 blue) m o u n ted o n a
pickup truck, high above the g ro u n d -features, which were in the bed o f the tru ck .
L inda designed it and they p u t it together
with chicken wire and new spaper. It turn ed
out so well, Jo has it stored in her b arn fo r
future use by the chapter.
Nebraska 99s Sponsor Poster Contest
In conjunction w ith “ G eneral A viation
Awareness M o n th ” , Nebraska 99s are
sponsoring an aviation poster co n test for
elem entary school age youngsters. N inetynines in different areas o f the state sp o n so r
local contests. The w inning local posters
are then entered in a statew ide co n test. As a
p art o f the poster project, N e b rask a 99s
provide inform ation ab o u t general aviatio n
to elem entary teachers. Sally Van Zandt is
chairm an o f the aviation poster p ro ject.

Pennies-a-Pound Flights Popular
Fullerton Chapter has a Pennies-aPound event scheduled for N ovem ber 6.
T his seems to be a successful kind of
m oney-raiser. Santa Rosa Chapter recently
had such an event in which they carried 292
passengers on rides an d m ade a p ro fit of
$655.75. T hey were charging 3c a p o u n d .
W hen the Palomar Chapter treasurer
rep o rted a shockingly low balance, em er­
gency m easures were set in m o tio n . Instead
o f an outright assessm ent, each m em ber is
planning a personal p roject to bring in $10.

The Air Force has begun the training o f
the first class o f women in Pilot Training.
They are currently in the Flight Screening
Porgram at Lackland Air Force Base where
they are in academic courses including
flight principles and analysis o f aircraft
systems. From there they will go to San
A ntonio for flight instruction in the T41, a
military version o f the Cessna 172, and then
on to W illiams AFB for a 49-week course in
the T37 and T38 jets.

E ngland, then headed fo r the continent

McCauley, Bay Cities Chapter, is dow n to
seven. A while back she was to take a
rented 182 o n a business cross-country w ith
her associates. The ren ter ju st b efo re her
trip encountered an engine o u t on ta k e -o ff
an d m anaged to “ c ream ” the plane in the
em ergency landing.
A short tim e ago, G ay scheduled to take

O u r son, D avid, w ho was nine years o ld , w ent to H eaven on A ugust 31, 1976. D uring
th e preceding three weeks we fo u n d o u t ju s t how w onderful the 99s are.
D avid was able to die at o u r lake h om e w ith those w ho loved him because we had
su p p o rt from friends like the 99s. They sent cards and m ade p hone calls to express their
love, the flew m edicine to us, sent flow ers, an d one 99 we m et at the P P D cam e and
stayed to share o u r sadness and to give us strength.
W e are h appy now th a t D avid is free o f his cancer. A nd I am p ro u d to be a 99.
