ADVERTISING
Magazine space is no-cost to organizations or individuals caring for
animals who need homes. Monthly business sponsorship rates are $300/
150/75/35 for a full-page/half-page/quarter-page/business card ad in color,
and $200/100/50/25 for grayscale ads. A one year subscription is $25.
ADOPTION CRITERIA
Each organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All organizations
require an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic expenses. All will
require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely a utility animal for protection
or hunting. Most will ensure that the animals are spayed or neutered at
the time of adoption; those that don’t will require a spay/neuter contract
and a deposit that will be refunded upon proof of spay or neuter. Most will
want to visit your home and see where the pet will live. Because many
of these animals have not been well treated in the past, extra care is
taken to ensure their safety and happiness in the future.

“Run, Forrest, Run!”
A Story of Special Needs and Special Gifts
By Donna Hartman, Newport Animal Shelter
In December 2007 a couple of would-be car thieves were interrupted by a
neighbor of the intended victim. A young Beagle was in the path of their
truck as they fled. The dog sustained a spinal cord injury that paralyzed the
rear half of his body. The neighbor took the Beagle to the Newport Animal
Shelter. The Beagle was wearing an orange hunting collar that had no
Rabies or other identification tag on it. He was not claimed by anyone
despite extensive efforts to find the owner.
The shelter was filled with homeless dogs and cats, and very were being
adopted or reclaimed. The chances for this little guy were slim. What he
had going for him, though, was a special spark, a lot of determination, and
an obvious zest for life. He had also had the good luck to land in a shelter
with an amazing staff, volunteers, and a Director who is a veterinarian.
Director Carol Hood borrowed a pair of wheels with a harness that had been created years ago for another dog, and the
equipment was adapted to fit the Beagle. Once the wheels were in place, he was off — wheeling around at an amazing speed! “Run,
Forrest, Run!” was the cheer from those present as they shared his enthusiasm.
Forrest worked as the official greeter for the Newport Animal Shelter. He developed quite a following. He also served as Shelter
Ambassador to the nursing home and at several community events. When Forrest visited the nursing home, he would head straight for
the people who were using wheelchairs. Kindred Spirits, he figured.
By Spring 2009, Forrest was quite well-established at the shelter. It’s fair to say that he had the employees and volunteers “wrapped
around his little paw.” As time went on, Forrest got more than his share of treats. Those big brown eyes and other means of persuasion
were too hard for people to resist. Forrest was getting too big for his wheels.
The Rolling Rescue program was fully operational by this time. Forrest was accepted by a no-kill shelter in Florida. From there he went
to a foster home that became a forever home in no time flat. He now receives hydrotherapy and therapeutic massage on a regular
basis. Forrest is the star of two “You Tube” videos titled “Thank You to All of Our Guardian Angels” and “Run, Forrest, Run and Swim
Too.” He has a fancier set of wheels now, but he may not need them much longer since he has gained so much strength.
Forrest continues to have a very loyal following in Newport. People wanted to keep in touch with him, and as a result, Forrest now has
his own column in The Newport Plain Talk. His new family keeps him posted on interesting stories from the Newport area, and most
Sundays, you can read his column to get a Beagle’s perspective on things. There’s always plenty to learn...
