Save a life! Adopt a homeless Pet! Dunkin’s Story Dunkin was found as little kitten behind a Dunkin Donuts near a busy intersection in Sevierville. A Good Samaritan took him home and cared for him but could not afford proper vet care. Young kittens are especially vulnerable to viruses, upper respiratory problems, and eye infections. This is what happened to Dunkin—being inside and well fed saved his life but not his vision. As a result he is totally blind in his left eye and has scarring on his right. He can see well enough to happily function in any home but is at a disadvantage to aggressive behavior from other pets; he just never sees it coming. Where he came from, how he got there, and what happened to his mom? No one knows. Sadly, this happens far too often; pets aren’t spayed or neutered, and they roam, often giving birth in dangerous places. Dunkin is one of the lucky ones. Now this sweet, good-natured boy is ready and waiting for his very own forever home. To learn more about Dunkin call (865) 216-7092. Protect your dog from the summer heat with water, shade, and indoor escape. Avoid hot asphalt, closed cars, and direct exposure to extreme heat. Monthly business rates are $300/150/75/35 for a full-page/half-page/quarter-page/business card ad in color, and $200/100/50/25 for grayscale ads. A one year subscription is $25. ADOPTION CRITERIA Each organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All organizations require an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic expenses. All will require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely a utility animal for protection or hunting. Most will ensure that the animals are spayed or neutered at the time of adoption; underfunded shelters may instead require a spay/neuter contract and a deposit that will be refunded upon proof of spay or neuter. Most will want to visit your home and see where the pet will live. Because many of these animals have not been well treated in the past, extra care is taken to ensure their safety and happiness in the future. She already knows some basic commands like sit, down, and shake. She is also crate-trained and very food motivated. She needs to be an only dog and would do better in a home without young children because of her large size. Also, it would be best if Sadie’s adopters had a fenced yard. Schotzie knows some basic obedience, such as sit and down, and she is house and crate trained. She does need work learning to walk on a leash. Schotzie was in a home with another German Shepherd mix and small dogs and is great with other dogs, as long as she is properly introduced. She would do best with another young, active dog. The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine oncology team is seeking dogs with inoperable mast cell tumors to participate in a clinical trial for the drug masitinib. Mast cell tumors are the most common malignant skin tumors in dogs. While mixed breed dogs are most commonly affected, (865) 940-0688 adoptagoldenknoxville.org Hazel Smittie Boston Terriers, Boxers, English Bulldogs, Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers are overrepresented. Early studies of this drug are very promising. There is no cost to participate. Details at https://vetmed.tennessee.edu/vmc/SmallAnimalHospital/ Oncology/Pages/default.aspx. He is absolutely sweet, handsome, and couldn’t care less about small active dogs. He has the cutest ears that fold forward. Susie is a 7 year old female. She was in a home until she got shocked by an underground fence. She became fearful of the yard and began having accidents. Underground fencing is not a safe solution for Greyhounds. Susie is now in foster care with cats and Greyhounds. She has no trouble playing in the fenced back yard and is no longer having accidents in the house. The woman and her Seeing Eye dog walked the same route nearly every day, so they both knew the way by heart; except on this particular day the woman fell and needed medical care. When help arrived she absolutely refused to get into the ambulance without the assurances from the ambulance team that they would take care of her aging dog who it turned out had cataracts in both eyes and was virtually blind as well. Some things to consider: Do you know what type of pet best suits your lifestyle? Do you travel a lot? How much time can you devote to a pet? Have you read about housetraining, litter boxes, and behavioral problems? Are you aware of the daily care needed by this kind of pet? Can you afford it? What might you expect as your pet ages? Can you commit to living with this pet for its full life span? On average, cats and dogs live about 12 to 15 years; other pets have longer (parrots, horses) or shorter (gerbils, mice, rabbits) life spans. The woman’s loyalty saved the day. The ambulance team had no Helpful Internet resources: obligation to take care of the dog; could have left him there to be https://www.petfinder.com/dogs/bringing-a-dog-home/tips-fordealt with by animal control, in spite of his years of loyal service. first-30-days-dog/ Old and blind, what do you think would have been his chances for http://theshelterpetproject.org/about-pet-adoption/ adoption? http://www.aspca.org/adopt/pet-care-costs Instead the driver took down the name of the dog’s veterinarian and delivered him to her care until other arrangements could be made. https://www.avma.org/public/petcare/pages/caring-for-an-olderpet-FAQs.aspx Far too often elderly pets end up in animal shelters and rescue http://www.aspca.org/adopt/adoption-tips/top-10-reasons-adoptorganizations simply because their companion family doesn’t older-dog want or know how to deal with the problems associated with aging. This need not happen. Before you adopt, weigh how the pet will fit into your life style.
